Let’s Get Candid with our Season 10 Premiere Artist: R-Mean

Let’s Get Candid with our Season 10 Premiere Artist: R-Mean

As his streams, views and likes climb with every drop and his hit list of features turns from big timers like Wiz Khalifa, French Montana, Quavo and YG into legendary icons like Nas and Wu-Tang Clan, this Armenian, LA-born, Amsterdam-raised artist raps as the voice of his people. After graduating UCLA, finishing Pharmacy school and starting 9-5 work as a pharmacist, R-Mean met a major fork in the road; when his right hand man and business partner Alex Kodo sat him down and asked him to decide if he was ready to risk everything for music. They gave up everything, their cars, apartments, nights out, personal wants, and invested every resource to start grinding out gold. From the early buzz of his first project Broken Water, to the next level waves of his tracks “Lost Angels” feat. The Game to Wu- Tang Clan recruiting him to appear on their 2017 album. The Saga Continues to then performing weekly on B-Real TV after attracting the attention of Cypress Hill's B- Real, R-Mean consistently leveled up. In 2020 he teamed up with Berner for the fiery joint project. The Warning powered by "On God” feat. Dave East and "Kings" feat. Wiz Khalifa & B- Real, meanwhile packing out shows and tours across the US and Canada, performing on festival stages like Rolling Loud [MIA, NY, and LA] while amassing a loyal following. BIO He then linked up with legendary producer Scott Storch [Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Megan Thee Stallion], reaching critical mass with their track “King James” feat. Jeremih hitting 4.3 million Spotify streams and getting licensed by ESPN, while R-Mean's latest single, “Yalla Habibi” feat. French Montana, has already claimed 1.6 million YouTube views, 1M Spotify streams and charted at #61 on the Urban Radio Charts in April 2022. After his tribute hit "Letter to the King", dedicated to his childhood hero Nas, R-Mean received a FaceTime call from the legend himself and the rest is history. Sharing stages and collaborating on the unreleased single "Candle of the Devil,” Nas has blessed R-Mean with a life changing verse, but more importantly his support. Receiving praise from Huffington Post, XXL, HotNewHipHop, and many more. R-Mean stays busy racking up tens of millions of streams and views, collaborating with some heavy hitters on his newly released Storch produced full-length debut, M.E.A.N., [Pentagon Records). But that is not all. The philanthropic side of R-Mean has earned the support of Cardi B, Post Malone and the late DMX just to name a few for his powerful movement “Open Wounds",which started from a song with the same title. R-Mean sold tens of thousands of t-shirts emblazoned with the phrase "Our Wounds Are Still Open" to raise awareness of the Armenian Genocide of 1.5 million people and decided to establish a non-profit to continue giving back to his community as well as open his own merchandise storefront, recording studio and art gallery "The Pentagon LA” to create a space for worldwide artists like himself - committed to building legacy in honor of Hip Hop forefathers like Nipsey Hussle and 2pac,who lived and died for the voice of their people. This is the legacy of R-Mean. A true testament to following your dream, believing in yourself and not stopping regardless of the hurdles, R- Mean is about to show the world that HE is the ONE!

Singer/Producer/Songwriter: El Hashem

Singer/Producer/Songwriter: El Hashem

Born in Kuwait to Lebanese parents, el Hashem has lived in Toronto, Canada. Influenced by his aunts, who are considered in the Middle East an iconic trailblazing super stars of women in music in the golden era, el Hashem has loved to sing since he was a child. A successful career in LGBTQAS+ media and community leadership dominated his time, and it was not until recently that el Hashem took the leap to pursue one of his life passions, singing. The journey started in early 2021 with a number of cover songs both in English and Arabic languages, that were received very warmly, and resulted in more than 150,000 streams on Spotify. A music video of one of the songs covers played a number of video and film festivals in Europe and NYC and won a number of awards, featuring the unique love story of two Arabic guys in love on a music video.
Since then he wrote, recorded, and released two singles and an EP. Upcoming plans include a full album in 2023 that el Hashem best describes as a personal and collective celebration of life, good vibes, inspiration, and feeling good, that will serve to empower the listeners on a struggling day. The album will again be a mix of Western and Middle Eastern vibes that el Hashem loves to connect together. El Hashem’s popularity is growing steadily around the world. From close to home in Toronto, and North America, to the Middle East, Indonesia, Philippines, Uganda, Nigeria, South America, and more, fans are coming to his social media from all over to enjoy his original songs, his fun videos covering popular songs that he does to entertain his friends (he personally prefers that to “fans”), and his sharing of his love of food, dogs, and life. His friendly, down to earth real vibe, and happy smile, seem to be reason for his growing popularity. When he started, el Hashem was concerned about a number of barriers to break as a Lebanese Canadian, gay artist, who is starting on the journey of writing and recording songs after a successful career in media publishing and as a talk show host. To be welcomed and enjoyed by listeners from different cultures, and in spite of the distances, is an exciting, and unexpected step, in his song journey. His recent 2022 Holiday Season videos singing much loved Christmas songs seemed to be spreading seasonal joy to listeners and getting a ton of love. That is how el Hashem sees songs and his role as an artist, to bring people together, to bridge cultures, to create a moment of joy or a powerful emotion.

“Get Back” Singer/Songwriter/Multi-Instrumentalist Dylan Jakobsen

“Get Back” Singer/Songwriter/Multi-Instrumentalist Dylan Jakobsen

He's already been named "One to Watch” by Taste of Country, The Boot & Sounds Like Nashville. Stepping off the highs of a pre-pandemic 108-stop radio tour and an extensive, high-energy touring schedule spanning 45 states and 3 continents, the Washington native settled into his home studio just outside of Nashville, TN to begin recording what would become his next album. From artist to songwriter and multi-instrumentalist to producer, Jakobsen has always been one to do things his own way and into his new album Set Fire to the Night, he continues to prove himself as the outside thinker he strives to be. Set Fire to the Night is a bounding step into the climate of todays society, but with a positive outlook on the present times and how you have the power to remain in control of your own tomorrows. It's a theme you'll find engrained throughout the entirety of it's track listing. Between the opening jangly guitars of “Beautiful” and the silver lining, state of mind lyrics found in “Don't Ya Think?” there's a radiating energy that shines through. Songs like “Get Back” and “Six” only prove to solidify the country-rockers stadium-like qualities and rhythmic flow that all comes to a cusp with the closing track “Into the Light”

Tysen Knight is Pop Urban Artist. He is most popularly known for his street art based on Buddha's teachings and pop art sense. Tysen is inspired by the works of famous street artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. His art style also reflects the styles of Fine Artist Pablo Picasso and Pop Artist Andy Warhol.
Tysen was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and grew up in New Jersey, where he finished high school. He decided to skip the idea of going to college and obtained his barbers' license instead and worked with some of the region's top athletes. He moved to California to pursue his passion in the arts and currently resides in the Palm Springs,California.
As a teenager, Tysen communicated his artwork through graffiti on walls and vacant buildings. He was hugely inspired by Andy Warhol.
From an early age, Knight got hands-on drawing cartoons and airbrushing them on jeans for $25. He also created business logos.
Tysen’s documentary, The Art Of Hustle: Street Art Documentary, was a success that motivated him to become a regular gallery contributor, from being a street artist. It won the ''Best Feature Film" Award 2018 at the Oregon Documentary Film Festival.
The production of the documentary, The Art Of Hustle, began in October 2016. Tysen worked sixty hours a week at a barbershop, and when he got days off on Sundays and Mondays, he filmed the documentary for nine months straight.
Knight directed the documentary to deliver the inspirational story about all the endeavors and dedication required to achieve goals and dreams and also shed a positive light on street art and graffiti.
Knight was responsible for a project, "Street Bench Art Pilot" conceived by the Palm Springs Public Arts Commission, the City Council Downtown Subcommittee, and Main Street Palm Springs, which involved decorating the benches throughout downtown
Palm Springs. He created a series of benches with the theme, "Urban Desert Palms and Icons" on Palm Canyon Drive between Arenas Road and Museum Way. The icons included Garland, Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Frida Kahlo, and Lucille Ball.
Knight launched his latest collection of paintings and drawings on October 23, 2019, at
www.RobertJamesGallery.com. The works are part of his new Masterpiece Mash-Up Series where he re-imagines paintings from artists such as Pablo Picasso, Leonardo DaVinci, and Grant Wood. The collection debuted in NYC (Time Square) in the last quarter of 2019.
Knight has worked with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity to build homes for the less fortunate. He has also been involved in activities like preparing meals alongside Midnight Mission for the homeless and mentoring young ‘troubled’ kids to pursue arts at no cost.
Knight partnered with The Palm Springs Unified School District and the BAM (Boys Art Mentorship) program in California and utilized his brand of street art to inspire and mentor at-risk youth. During this mentorship program, Tysen engaged students with an interactive program and taught them how to express themselves artistically, which has in return seen the drop-out rate of men of color in these programs reduced.
Tysen Knight won the award for the category, Best Feature Film, at Oregon Documentary Film Festival, in 2018, for his documentary, The Art Of Hustle: Street Art Documentary. He also won the ''Best Director'' Award 2019 at the Marina Del Rey Film Festival for his second film The Art Of Hustle: Homeless Street Artist Documentary.
Tysen also won the artist “Spotlight” award at Red Dot Miami (Art Basel Weekend)
Tysen is also Artist Educator-in- Residence for the Palm Springs Art Museum: Jan 23- I February 9, 2020 (Sheffer/Scheffler Arts Education Space). We are grateful to have him as a guest on Black Canvas

Rhythm and Punk Superstar Artist: Jack The Underdog

Rhythm and Punk Superstar Artist: Jack The Underdog

WHO IS JACK THE UNDERDOG? In just over half a decade, Jack The Underdog has reinvented the pop-punk genre. He fuses pop-punk styles with electronic and hip-hop elements to create a totally original sound, dubbed “R&P” (rhythm and punk). Inspired by social justice, Jack The Underdog writes music for the misfits. Jack understands the battles of feeling unheard, and he aims to be a voice for the marginalized and misunderstood, hoping they can find some solace in his melodies. Jack The Underdog began his career as Jack Ohmes (old miss), writing songs in his hometown of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Music has always been in his bones - beginning at a young age, Jack took piano lessons, played in the school orchestra, picked up other instrument lessons, and attended School of Rock, where he was coached on performance and songwriting. Just a few years later, he formed a band with his high school peers called Painting Stars. As he began to emerge as Jack The Underdog, Jack's music led him to Nashville as he continued his music education at Belmont University. Jack majored in songwriting and music business and minored in social justice. Within his first few months in Nashville, Jack and his band, Painting Stars, were given the opportunity to open for the punk rock group The Story So Far. Jack The Underdog’s songs, “Dolly,” “Hard To Read,” “Sleepless,” and “Writing My Future” have been featured on popular Minnesota radio stations. His song “Dolly” gained popularity on the social platform Tik Tok as it was being used by popular content creators. With the release of “Wastin’ Away” in March of 2022, Jack The Underdog established himself in the pop-punk genre. He continues to represent the underdogs, finding ways to aid people however he can. Inspired by his mother’s battle with cancer, Jack donated all of the proceeds generated by one of his songs to Gilda’s Club, a support community for those living with cancer. Jack also works full-time at a non-profit that works to prevent sexual violence across the state of Tennessee. Jack The Underdog’s most recent release was his 7 song project, ‘Acoustic Variants.’ His progressive attitude and hard-hitting lyrics will undoubtedly catapult him all the way to the top. Jack will continue to release music through 2023, most recently collaborating with artists such as Kellin Quinn of Sleeping With Sirens and more.

Bakersfield Native Music Artist: Andres Aparicio

Bakersfield Native Music Artist: Andres Aparicio

Hailing from Bakersfield, CA(home to iconic country music star, Buck Owens and the Nu-METAL pioneers in Korn) Andrés' persistent touring schedule and ability to frequently self release quality music will earn him a street named after him in no time. Although The Fall of Troy and Hail the Sun have been nice enough to let him open up their shows, Andrés has had trouble being embraced by the progressive post-hardcore community due to his embarrassingly cheesy lyrics and obvious musical show tune influences. Andrés' social media bio reads "I ain't nothin but a jazz hound baby."

Cory Heliker aka XSavotage is a alternative hiphop artist born in Anchorage, Alaska. He spent most of his life in California and he is currently based in Long Beach. His music is a reflection of his life - generally a rollercoaster - with strong dark undertones, deep emotions, yet sometimes comical lyrics, and raw instrument driven beats. Long before XSavotage was recording he was inspired by the greats such as Nas, Tupac, Biggy, Mac Dre, Bone Thugs, and less known artist like Atmosphere. Now, as he has tried to perfect his own genuine style, X rarely listened to any other artists while writing his latest project. He currently has 2 albums released and 8 singles - I has an album releasing next year beginning January, February, and March 1st with singles, and the album release May 4th (my birthday). This album details the events of a toxic relationship that lead to a suicide attempt. X Savotage hopes to use this album to break through to his fans and start talking about hard subjects - also to show his fans that we can get better. Until the release of the album, X will be performing select songs as often as possible around LA. Go follow and stream his music on all major platforms.

Singer/Songwriter/Producer: Tanner Carlson

Singer/Songwriter/Producer: Tanner Carlson

Tanner got his start in music singing and playing guitar in church. From there he went on to record covers to upload to his YouTube channel, which started gaining him his first traction.

Tanner’s debut EP titled Perkins Point came out in the summer following his junior year of high school. Tanner sat in his room all summer mixing the songs he had been writing over the course of the year, although he had no previous experience with a DAW.

Over the course of Tanner’s senior year of high school, he began working more on the craft of production. This resulted in his second EP titled Boulder Lake being filled with more of a pop influenced sound. The track “friends” gained traction from being included on a Top Songs of 2019 playlist that received over a million views on TikTok.

Tanner’s third EP titled The Springs came out after his first year attending Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. This EP is a chronological story through Tanner’s freshman year. Tracks such as “last year” and “without one” are known to be favorites among fans as they represent the melancholy of some freshman years.

Tanner’s highly anticipated fourth EP titled Stuck released on August 20, 2021. After releasing music for over three years, Tanner was excited for the buzz that was starting to come around him as an artist. The title track “stuck” is about Tanner’s long distance relationship during quarantine and how they were stuck apart from each other.

Tanner’s fifth EP titled Diamonds released in early 2022. The title track “diamonds” started racking up streams due to a few big playlists such as “I see red” and “Pop Chillout.” A fan favorite of this project was “need you around” which focuses on the start of a relationship and how everything feels brand new.

Tanner’s sixth EP titled Too Long came out a few months after Diamonds on April 8, 2022. This project included more of a dance vibe with 808s and programmed drums.

After graduating as an audio engineer at Belmont University, Tanner released his seventh EP titled Over You. This project came out on his twenty-second birthday on June 27, 2022.

Tanner now works as a singer on the Tootsie’s circuit in downtown Nashville. He brings energetic live performances with a three-channel loop pedal of both covers and originals. Tanner also produces, mixes, and masters songs for clients including Donny Van Slee, bambitherockstar, Zack McFarland, Sarah Mae Chilton, and many more! He is looking forward to his eighth and final EP entitled Lost In California coming out November 18, 2022.

Tanner’s plan for 2023 is to release a song every other week. This would result in 26 singles being released over the course of the year. He is vigorously working to amass a collection of songs that will be used in this process.

Congolese-American actor, artist, singer, and songwriter: Cedric Kasongo

Congolese-American actor, artist, singer, and songwriter: Cedric Kasongo

Cedric Kasongo also known as Flex3r is a Congolese-American actor, artist, singer, and songwriter. Cedric began his journey as a musician at a very young age, much like his acting career. Growing up singing in his church choir, Cedric was a primed talented singer who could sing very a diverse vocal range from Soprano to Bass. Cedric grew up in Zambia after his family escaped DR Congo during a war at just 1 year of age. His family spent the next 12 years living in a refugees camp in the northwestern province of Zambia.

Cedric and his family relocated to the US in 2010, just before the turn of the year. Cedric began his life in the US in his new hometown of Baton Rouge, home to some of the most talented musicians in the industry such as Boosie, Kevin Gates, and NBA Youngboy. Just an hour away, you have New Orleans, a city that's home to legends such as Lil Wayne, Mia X, and Master P. It's no surprise that music was the first part of the American culture that attracted Cedric. He eventually began his music journey in the US after meeting a friend named YungEmma, an aspiring music producer at the time and now one of the most primed music videographers in the industry.

After making countless hip-hop beats, YungEmma often made sure his friends heard it. With guidance from YungEmma, Cedric picked up an interest in Music Production and began making beats as well. After he amassed hundreds of beats that landed in his phone from YungEmma, Cedric had no choice but to attempt becoming a songwriter. With no formal education in songwriting, Cedric began writing freely in a way that made sense to him by just "following the rhythm of the beat" as he described.

In 2018, Cedric improved his songwriting skills and realized he had a serious talent in the art of music. He recorded and released his first five songs on all music platforms. The busy life of college made it difficult to stay consistent with his music, but there was plenty of time to listen to music and the list of never-ending beats from YungEmma. After some time, Cedric decided to take down all the five songs he initially released. Asked why? "I realized the songs were sh..t, I decided to take those trash down, work on my craft then start releasing songs when I'm good enough to release them," he explained. From 2018 to 2022, Cedric spent the next four years working on his music, learning the arts of production, songwriting, mixing, and mastering.

After continuously surprising himself, Cedric marked down his calendar and aimed to start publishing music again, beginning in 2022. That would start with "Long Gone" which he published on his birthday, February 28th, 2022. A song inspired by a dream he once had of him performing on stage in a white suit at the Grammy Awards. Where this journey takes him is just a question we can all ask, but there's no doubt he's talented enough to "change people's lives through music," something he describes as his ultimate goal in writing songs. You can find some of the most recent releases on all platforms, as he promised to release at least one song every month for the rest of the year 2022. Find him on social media such as Instagram and Facebook, and go subscribe to his youtube channel for more access to what goes on behind the scenes.

Singer/Songwriter: Donny Van Slee aka Dr. Don

Singer/Songwriter: Donny Van Slee aka Dr. Don

Raised off the west coast of Florida, singer/songwriter Donny Van Slee AKA Dr. Don realized at a young age that music was more than just a passion – it was his life’s art. While attending college, Van Slee would play in local venues like Tropical Grill, The Florida Cracker, Market 48, and Monte McGill’s, where he would entertain the townspeople and tourists alike.
In 2018, Donny left his hometown to study at Palmer College of Chiropractic, located in Daytona Beach, Florida where he continued to perform live every weekend. Donny finally discovered Nashville, TN while road tripping from Florida to Colorado to start a chiropractic internship.

After hours of emails and phone calls, the “World-Famous Tootsies Orchid Lounge” decided to grant him an audition. So, while Donny was driving back from Colorado to Florida to graduate Chiropractor school, he auditioned and they hired him after performing his first song, “Good Direction” by Billy Currington.

He left Nashville the next morning, drove to Florida to receive his doctorate, kissed mom and dad goodbye, and drove back to Nashville. One year later, he is a front-man for multiple bands, performing every weekend on main stages and rooftops.

When not on stage, Dr. Don is seeing patients, writing songs, or recording with his buddy Tanner Carlson who he met while performing downtown on lower broadway. Tanner has produced ‘Path of Love,” “Today,” “In the Bucket with All the Stickers on It,” and “Spencer’s Song.”
