About The Generalist: "The Generalist is a shared vision from us, Lora and Bradley Eshbach. 👋🏻
Lora comes from the arts, performance, and events world, Bradley from marketing and consulting, both of us spent the last decade in Chicago. With complementary skills as entrepreneurs, organizers, creative thinkers, and strategists, we're hell-bent on building The Generalist into something special.
Alternative forms of retail (think: General Stores, antique malls, flea markets, junk shops, army/navy surplus, basement boutiques) have thrived in Appalachia by blending community, commerce and creative problem solving.
In this tradition, we aim to be way more than a landlord or wholesaler to our talented vendors. We want to be the launching pad for anyone interested in turning their craft or skill into a business in Appalachia. We're obsessed with breaking the barriers entrepreneurs face (big and small) through shared resources, collective buying power, and a community space where anyone with an idea and some curiosity can thrive."

39. Cortney Stewart: An epic Johnson City Facebook group that brings people together
On today’s episode of JCL, I’m talking with Cortney Stewart. By day, Cortney is a real estate agent with Evans & Evans, as well as a wife and mother. Earlier this year, Cortney started a Facebook page that I’m a little obsessed with called Moving to and Living in Johnson City. Cortney started the group as a way to introduce Johnson City to out-of-towners who might consider moving here (and to offer her services as a real estate agent) but the group has taken on a life of its own and now boasts more than 2,000 members.
If you live in Johnson City, if you’re thinking about moving to Johnson City, or if you used to live here but want to keep tabs on how we’re doing, you’re going to want to be in Cortney’s group. It’s really well run and is a bright spot on social media.

34. Jack Rhea: Homegrown All American with a bright future in golf
Today’s show features my chat with Jack Rhea. Jack is a Johnson City native and has made a name for himself as a standout golfer as a junior golfer, then in high school at Science Hill, and has spent the last three years on the nationally recognized ETSU men’s golf team.
Even though his junior year was cut short by a global pandemic, Jack won the individual title at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, where he shot a 63 to help nail down his win. Jack is also getting ready to make his second appearance in the US Amateur Championship, which is being played at Bandon Dunes in Oregon in early August. Two years ago, Jack shot a 69 in the US Amateur at Pebble Beach to earn a spot in the match play event.
If you don’t follow golf, qualifying for the US Amateur is a really big deal, and shooting 69 at Pebble Beach is extraordinary.
In today’s interview we’re talking about how Jack got started playing golf, how he handled the abrupt end of his junior season, what his thoughts are about making a run at turning pro, and we even dive into how he’s been spending his time in quarantine.

Today’s guest is Maggie Wood. Maggie and her husband John are relatively new to Johnson City, but they haven’t wasted any time digging in and making a contribution to our fine city. Maggie is the executive director of A Step Ahead Foundation Tricities, a nonprofit that helps prevent unplanned pregnancies by connecting women with long acting, reversible contraception regardless of their ability to pay.
I learned a lot from my chat with Maggie, including some of the economic and public health consequences of unplanned pregnancy and the barriers that stand between a lot of women and the support they need.
You’ll also want to tune in to hear about how Maggie and her husband discovered Johnson City, and the moment they knew this would be their new home.

32. Jason Flack: Pulling inspiration from comics, cartoons, and the city he calls home
This week my guest is Jason Flack. Jason was born and raised in Johnson City and is a working artist. In today’s episode Jason shares the story of how he discovered his talents at a very early age, and honed his craft by pulling inspiration from the cartoons, comic books, and epic movies of his childhood.
I really enjoyed this chat with Jason, because he’s not a guy who’s afraid to be honest and real. In the interview you’ll hear him talk about the tension around creating art that makes a statement and how that impacts earning a living as an artist. He’s also a passionate advocate for local artists, and isn’t afraid to make his voice heard when he sees an opportunity to advance the works of local artists.
I’ll wrap up by saying Jason is also a very generous guy, and even indulged me when I asked if he’d sketch something on my whiteboard in the studio. Go check out the Johnson City Living instagram account to check that out.

31. Jay Allen: You can be anything you want, so why not be colossal?
Today's guest is Jay Allen.
I’ll let Jay tell you about his background, but I’ll share this with you: Jay was born into basketball royalty as the son of local hoops legend Shane Williams and worked his way into some pretty unbelievable opportunities. In high school, he transferred to the prestigious Christ School in Arden, North Carolina which at one point won five consecutive and which has sent 23 players to Division One schools in recent years (including Jay) and has several players in the NBA.
After graduating from Wofford in 2017, Jay began plotting out his next move and has since started Colossal Brand, which creates original apparel and accessories. But Jay says the message of Colossal Brand is just as important as the merchandise. I’ll let you hear it in his own words.

Today’s guest is a newcomer to Johnson City, but he’s connected with a Johnson City icon.
Tyler Deaver is the new head golf professional at the Johnson City Country Club. If you’re new to the area or don’t know much about the country club, the club was established in 1913 and the golf course was designed by one of golf’s legendary course designers, A.W. Tillinghast.
If you’ve ever played a round of golf at the country club, you can almost feel what it was like to play the course generations ago. There’s a lot of history on those 18 holes.
In the interview, Tyler talks about how he chose golf as a career and why he dropped everything when the job at the Johnson City Country Club came open.

28. Lindsey Mitchell: How solving a common problem for families led to a blossoming business
Our guest on the Johnson City Living podcast today is Lindsey Mitchell, founder of Mayfair Market and The Table at Mayfair Market.
Lindsey and her husband Patrick (along with their four young kids) recently moved BACK to Johnson City after spending a few years in Savannah. Before they moved to Savannah, Lindsey started a business from home called The Table, which provided delicious ready-when-you-are meals to help lighten the “oh no, what are we going to have for dinner?” burden for busy families. The Table grew like wildfire and now that the Mitchells are back in Johnson City, she’s picking right back up where she left off, but with enhanced offerings and expanding into home goods and gift items.
You’re going to want to see the stuff she’s making!
In the episode, Lindsey shares about where she got the idea for The Table in the first place; the challenge that led her to start creating physical products, and what it was like making meals for hundreds of people in her home kitchen.

25. Tina Wilson: Creating beautiful images and irresistible environments
Today’s interview is one we recorded live and in person in the Market Street Media studios in downtown Johnson City. And I’m glad we got to record it in person because it ended up being a really lovely conversation.
My guest for today’s episode is Tina Wilson. Tina Wilson is the owner of Tina Wilson Photography and Reclaimed Inspired Goods. In our conversation, we talk about Tina’s early days in photography, traveling around the country shooting 40-60 family portraits a day, to building her own premium lifestyle photography business, to creating a home goods retail store and design studio in downtown Johnson City.
One thing I appreciated about this conversation is that Tina was willing to share the highs...and the lows...of the journey to where she is today. Tina is a great example of what can happen when you combine a big vision with a lot of hard work AND faith that everything will work out.

24. Mary Ellen Miller: Ten tips for work-at-home success
I’m interrupting our normal cycle to bring you a quick interview I did this week with Mary Ellen Miller. Mary Ellen is an experienced communications and public relations executive with experience not only in handling and responding to crises but also with another topic many of us are learning about for the first time, which is being effective while working at home.
If you find yourself trying to juggle your work duties while also caring for kids, aging parents, pets, or neighbors...or just yourself...I think the recommendations Mary Ellen shares in today’s episode will be helpful.
We’ll be back on schedule with our next new episode on Wednesday. Thanks as always for listening.

23. Andy Dietrich: How to work together to get more done
Here at the world headquarters of Johnson City Living we’re charging forward with our episodes. I know you’re not spending as much time in the car, but I want you to have new stuff at your fingertips for that extra walk around the neighborhood or yard project you’re working on.
Today’s guest is Andy Dietrich. Andy is one of the owners of Champion Chevrolet Cadillac on the Bristol Highway in Johnson City. In the episode, Andy talks about how he got started in the car business as a kid picking up cigarette butts in the parking lot, to working as a mechanic’s helper, and then as a salesman during his summer breaks in college.
In recent years, Andy and a handful of other business leaders in the area have taken on the idea that as a region, we’re stronger working together than as individual cities. If the spread of coronavirus and out attempts to stay safe have taught us anything, it’s that we’re more connected than we realize and we’ve got to take care of each other. I think Andy’s message really resonates during a time like this.

Today we’re talking with Valentina Escobar Gonzalez, founder of Beyond Engagement Social Media Solutions.
Valentina is a native of Miami and in our conversation she talks about what brought her to Johnson City, and how she launched her business after moving here.
I’ll tell you, after hearing Valentina’s story, I have a lot of respect for what she’s accomplished. She moved here not knowing a soul, and through a ton of hard work and a lot of hours networking at community events, she’s now a well known local expert on how businesses can use social media to their advantage.
In our interview, she talks about launching a business in a city where you don’t know anyone, boundaries with social media, and why she’s taking intense ballroom dancing lessons to benefit a local nonprofit.

19. Ashley Cavender: Healthy, hearty meals for EVERYONE at One Acre Cafe
Did you know there’s a restaurant in Johnson City where the menu changes daily, featuring entrees like Cuban Mojo Pork and Black Pepper Chicken Breast...sandwiches like Pimiento Grilled Cheese or Roasted Beef with Onion Jam and White Cheddar?
Did you know this restaurant is located right in the heart of West Walnut Street, close to downtown, ETSU, the VA, and the Medical Center?
And did you know this restaurant will feed anyone and everyone regardless of their ability to pay?
That restaurant is One Acre Cafe and today I’m joined by Ashley Cavender, the cafe’s volunteer and development coordinator to talk about what it’s like working at a volunteer-run, pay-as-you-can restaurant. I think you’re going to like this talk with Ashley Cavender.

18. Kat Latham: How to serve a family of customers and a city in need
Today’s guest on the Johnson City Living podcast is Kat Latham.
In 2014, Kat and her husband Eric opened Johnson City Brewing Company in downtown Johnson City. At the time, they were the only brewery in Johnson City, and of course in the years since, brewing in downtown has flourished as others have followed the path that Kat and Eric paved.
Also, there’s something really important I need to tell you about today’s show. I ended up cutting about a third of the episode after we finished our interview. I hated to lose that part, because that section speaks a lot to who Kat is, but Kat asked me to cut it and it was the right thing to do, which also speaks a lot to who Kat is.
The part I had to cut was about a career change Kat made about a year ago.
When Kat was growing up, her dad was a firefighter at Dulles airport in Virginia. Because of his schedule, he was very involved in Kat’s childhood...he was the guy who comes on the field trips, the guy who’s around to help with homework, and the guy who can pitch in with after-school activities. Kat grew up seeing that you can be a good citizen, good provider and a good parent at the same time.
Sadly, Kat’s dad passed away about a year and half ago. But she described how even though he wasn’t a Johnson City firefighter, the Johnson City fire department sent 4 members of their honor guard to stand watch over her father at his funeral service AND the Dulles fire department sent 2 members of their honor guard all the way down here to Johnson City to do the same.
Kat was moved by what she calls this special fraternity of firefighters and how no matter what, they show up for people in need, and she began to toss around the idea of becoming a firefighter herself.
Flash forward to today, and Kat has followed in her father’s footsteps and is a firefighter. Kat works for the Johnson City Fire Department. She says her job with the fire department gives her all the opportunities she saw with her father...she can help support her family, give back to her community, and be around for her kids activities.
Because of the fire department often sees people in times of their deepest need, they have a policy that communications about that work need to go through the chain of command. And like a good employee, Kat didn’t want to do anything to break the fire department’s chain of command.
That’s why I cut our entire conversation about Kat’s experience becoming a firefighter. You’ll have to take my word that it’s a really good story.

In this episode we're talking with Chef Nathan Brand, owner of Timber! in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Nathan opened Timber! in 2019 after running a successful, experimental pop-up cafe inside Dos Gatos Coffee Bar called The Orchard Mason.
In the interview, Nathan shares:
- how his food career started in a food court ice cream shop
- what it's like making 12 drinks in 15 minutes at a barista competition
- why he opened a family-friendly, neighborhood restaurant instead of a high-end fine dining concept
And make sure you stay to the end, when I put Nathan through a lightning round to see what drinks he'd pair with items from places like Five Guys, Waffle House, and the frozen foods aisle.

12. Kristina Dulaney: Caring for Johnson City moms dealing with childbirth-related mental health issues
If you’re a mom, considering becoming a mom, are married to or in a relationship with someone who may eventually become a mom...I hope you find today’s conversation helpful.
Today I’m talking with Kristina Dulaney. Kristina is a registered nurse, a mom, and founder of a Johnson City nonprofit called Cherished Mom. Cherished Mom provides education and support to moms, partners, spouses and caregivers around issues of perinatal mental health.
Now if I just ran right past you with some of those words, don’t worry. I had to Google some of it, too. Perinatal just means related to, or along with, pregnancy and childbirth.
Kristina has deep, first-hand experience with perinatal mental health issues, and in today’s show she’s sharing her story of the issues she experienced following the births of both of her children, and in particular, her descent into postpartum psychosis.
Perinatal mental health is a huge issue, and in the interview Kristina shares a staggering statistic with me about how pervasive mental health issues are for new moms.
I think we can all learn a lot from Kristina’s story.
And finally, before we start, just a word of caution. While there’s nothing graphic in this episode, the last thing I would want to do is re-traumatize anyone who has experienced postpartum anxiety, depression, bipolar or psychosis in the past. If there’s a possibility today’s show might re-awaken some hard things for you, let’s just agree to meet again for our next episode.
