The Muddle of the Mind and How to Claim our True Sense of Self with Willow McIntosh

The Muddle of the Mind and How to Claim our True Sense of Self with Willow McIntosh

As HSPs, one of the greatest challenges we face is managing our energy and our thoughts. This can wreak havoc when it comes to our well-being, productivity, and sense of self-value.

It is often helpful to consider that we are not our minds. Even though our minds can feel so prominent to us as HSPs because of how extensively we are processing.

The nature of who we are does not reside in our minds and thoughts. The truth of who we are is a much deeper experience.

In this episode, we consider the pain associated with the false self we tend to identify with at the cost of our real sense of self. We look at the energetics of this. In other words, the energetic sensations we experience in our bodies, our hearts, and intuitive senses.

We explore how we can learn to gradually shift our awareness back into self-ownership and experience the truth of who we are. A shift that can relieve us of a great deal of difficulty and lead us to a true sense of purpose, belonging, and self.

Willow McIntosh is the founder of Inluminance and creator of the High Sensory Coaching Program. Unique circumstances during Willow’s childhood led to the burying of his authentic self and complete misalignment to the work he was destined for. He began to carve his own path into understanding how people with sensory processing sensitivity can learn to use their genetic traits to their advantage. As an adult this led to a lifelong enquiry and practise into learning powerful energetic alignment techniques to re-engage with the authentic self. Willow believes that all people with the trait have the ability to tap into a unique skill that draws on a deeper sensory perception. Having successfully facilitated the development of seven figure businesses Willow’s practise has taken him all over the world. Understanding the Importance of Our Role Locally and Globally as HSPs with Willow McIntosh

Understanding the Importance of Our Role Locally and Globally as HSPs with Willow McIntosh

The trait of high sensitivity is becoming more and more widely known in the world these days. We are beginning to understand the advantages as well as learning how to manage our challenges.

It is most encouraging to know that the trait is genetic and not caused through trauma or conditioning. It is naturally occurring and designed to give the human race an advantage. Our ability to process more deeply allows us to perceive and understand the world differently. It is understood that initially, nature gave us this ability to be aware of more in our surroundings to give us an evolutionary advantage for our survival.

As we have evolved, so has our ability to utilize these abilities in the world. We are able to see a wider picture of information around us, especially in our own natural area of purpose and competence.

This week we will look at the various areas of life that benefit greatly from our wider perspective such as schooling, the classroom and education, healthcare and wellbeing, and the corporate world of employees and managers. We also take a look at our role in leadership and supporting those in leadership.

The range of our ability provides new ways of seeing things to continue to promote change and evolution. Empowering each of us to recognize our own area of interest and the role we can play at a personal level.

The Importance of Understanding our Value as HSPs with Willow and Julie

The Importance of Understanding our Value as HSPs with Willow and Julie

The notion of value can mean different things. Yet in the context of personal value, it can mean the difference between a life of struggle and one of meaning and abundance. As HSPs, the value we bring to the world is often connected to our ability to process more deeply. In other words, the way in which we see and perceive the world brings a valuable perspective to our respective arenas of interest. For example, if we work with people, the ability to see and feel more gives us a greater capacity to enthuse, guide and lead. If we work as therapists or coaches, our higher sensory awareness gives us a great advantage in perceiving what is in the way of someone’s well-being or potential.

Our perspective is often where our value lies. Yet, for many of us, the sensitivities that make this possible were not recognized as an advantage during our early development and schooling. Therefore we can sometimes find ourselves walking a path that we are told to or believe we should walk because society dictates. The end result often leads us away from being able to recognize and actualize our value. Join us this week as we explore how all of us, as HSPs, can find our value by recognizing the area of life that matters most to us. The benefits of owning self-value are there for us all, bringing the opportunity of a life of purpose, worth, and significance.

Saving HSP Lives and Improving Mental Health with Julie Bjelland

Saving HSP Lives and Improving Mental Health with Julie Bjelland

In a recent survey of 326 HSPs collected over five days between December 17-22, 2022

over 90% of HSPs have had thoughts of suicide. over 18% have attempted suicide almost 33% use alcohol or drugs to numb emotional pain.

We can learn a lot from this survey on how to support and save HSP lives.

Things that were named that make it hard to cope Overwhelming and intense emotions Sensory overload Absorbing the suffering of others and the world Feeling different and misunderstood Not understanding how to support their sensitivity 3 AREAS THAT HELP + RECOMMENDED RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THOSE NEEDS

In the survey, HSPs also identified three main areas that helped them cope, which we can use to help others. Within each of the three areas, I have resources.

Learning About the Trait of High Sensitivity Self-Care the HSP Way Supportive People 1. Learning about their trait of high sensitivity made them feel less alone in how they experienced the world opened up a window to understanding themselves. helped explain why they experienced the world the way they did helped them understand why they always felt different from those around them. It also helped them understand, accept, and honor that their self-care needs look different than most.

These factors improved wellness, self-esteem, self-compassion, and coping ability.

2. Self-Care the HSP Way

HSPs reported that when they started being consistent about specific types of self-care that reduced sensory overload and supported the sensitive nervous system, their mental and physical health improved, offering greater resiliency and coping skills.

3. Supportive People

Those that reported having supportive people around them named it as one of the key factors in improving wellness and mental health.

Immediate Resources

If you know someone who is struggling with thoughts of suicide, let them know they are not alone and that there is immediate help available 24 hours a day.  They can call, text, or chat at 988, and you will be connected to trained counselors in the United States at the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, always available 24 hours a day, free and confidential. Internationally, you can find suicide hotlines in your country at the International Association for Suicide Prevention.

'Our Spiritual Experience as HSPs and the Connection with Purpose' hosted by Willow McIntosh

'Our Spiritual Experience as HSPs and the Connection with Purpose' hosted by Willow McIntosh

Willow shares: The depth of our relationship with the natural world is often a very important part of who we are as HSPs. Yet for many of us religion and spirituality become tricky areas. Usually because we have been having a powerful spiritual relationship with the world around us ever since we were little. Oftentimes we are told or taught as young people that our world view is supposed to fit into a particular genre or existing framework.

From all of my work with HSPs over the years, the connection we have at a deeper level with the world, is a big part of who we are. The part of us that feels into the truth of things. A deeper experience of reality, both within ourselves and the natural world. Feeling safe to explore this part of who we are, brings a great gift with it. It helps us to understand that our deeper experience of the true nature of things is very much aligned with our purpose and place in the world. That in fact the ability we have to commune with nature, ourselves and others at a deep level, is what gives us our ability to serve in a deep and meaningful way.

We are often referred to as the 'Spiritual Leaders', the 'Guardians of the Inner World' and the 'Spiritual Advisors'. Owning and knowing how to utilise this part of who we are is a wonderful act of self love and self acceptance.

Join me this week as I open the discussion around our high sensory experience from a spiritual point of view. An opportunity to begin to normalise a very important part of who we are. A part that can bring great clarity and meaning to the work we are here to do for both ourselves and humanity.

Lifting the Cloud off Climate Change with Alex Arnold

Lifting the Cloud off Climate Change with Alex Arnold

Climate anxiety and eco-grief are on the rise. Yet the terms are so new that you may not even know that’s what you’re experiencing. According to Dr. Stowe, Executive Director of the Harvard Environmental Economics Program, the most important impact we, as individuals, can have on climate change is by increasing "climate conversations." So let's talk about it!

What I am sharing is non-political, non-judgmental, and not pressuring you to do anything. Quite the opposite. This podcast is for highly sensitive people who feel overwhelmed at the thought of the climate crisis, experience grief, fear, anxiety, hopelessness, and/or other complex emotions. You may also feel stuck and unsure where to start or don't believe that you can make a difference. That’s ok because we hurt where we care.

Acknowledging fear and grief is our starting point. Once we accept our discomfort, we can learn tools to manage it. Once we understand the science of what motivates us, we can gain clarity on what we truly care about and what we do best. And once we meet others with similar interests and values, we can move forward with accountability, support and have fun along the way.

Most importantly, let's give ourselves permission to take a deep breath. Therein lies the source of positive change, for ourselves, for those around us, and for our planet.

I'm Alex, an ICF-accredited (ACC) climate resilience coach with a Master’s in Organizational Psychology. As a coach and someone with High Sensory Sensitivity (HSS), I am here to provide a sanctuary for other sensitive, shy, or introverted women who deeply care about climate change so that they, and the planet, can thrive. Using strengths-based approaches like Positive Psychology and Appreciative Inquiry, I support women who feel stuck, overwhelmed, helpless, guilty or don't know where to start to make a difference. Through powerful questions, deep listening and empathy, I help them discover their strengths, get clarity on what they really want for a meaningful life and sustainable future, and share practical tools so that they can learn to coach themselves and build hope, resilience, and a strong sense of confidence that they too, can make a positive difference - no matter how small. thequietactivists.com

Conscious Living for HSPs Seeking Wellness with Julie and Willow

Conscious Living for HSPs Seeking Wellness with Julie and Willow

Conscious living means paying attention to what supports our mind, body, and soul to help us live fulfilling, healthy lives. As sensitive people, we are exposed to and more affected by stress, environmental concerns, the energy of the people around us, and what we eat!

Overwhelm, anxiety, brain fog, low energy and mood, skin problems, pain, chronic health conditions, etc., can all improve when we make conscious choices about what is right for us and what isn’t.

Sometimes that means we do things out of the box, too, and we want to encourage and support you to pave your own path that works for you.

Mind

Manage stress, set boundaries, and live consciously. What supports you and what doesn’t?

Lowering your stress will have a significant impact on your health.

Body

Food is medicine, and it’s even more true for HSPs! What we put in our body, what is absorbed in our skin (the largest organ), and what we are exposed to daily in our environment can all significantly impact our health and well-being. Are you eating whole, healthy foods?  Processed foods aren’t good for anyone, especially HSPs!  What products are you using on your skin and cleaning with around your home? Are they natural or filled with chemicals that might be hurting you?

-Your body gives you cues about your wellness. With increased insula activation, you are even more conscious of how your body reacts.  Pay attention. Slow down and listen.

Soul

Living in a meaningful way, doing work, hobbies, volunteering, etc. that fulfill you is especially important for HSPs. Spend time every day in nature. It’s a reset button for us and incredibly good for our wellness!

Trust your flow and know that what works for you might be different than others. Spend time with nature every day. Take time to yourself every day. Slow down and pay attention. Pay attention, be conscious, and be intentional. When you eat something, how do you feel after? Set boundaries when you are around people that make you feel icky. Is the energy of your home positive or chaotic? Are there things you can do to improve it? Are you overgiving to others and under-giving to yourself? Honor what makes you feel your best. Surround yourself with people who support your well-being

We’ve covered so many topics supporting your wellness we encourage you to explore the episodes at HSPpodcast.com and join our Sensitive Empowerment Community and see how good it feels to be surrounded by kind-hearted HSPs living consciously.

Self Care Ritual for HSP Empaths with Sara Dessau Lopez

Self Care Ritual for HSP Empaths with Sara Dessau Lopez

During this self-care practice, Sara gently guides us through a series of at-home rituals and sends us healing reiki to help create a clear and clean energetic line. I encourage you to revisit this whenever life gets overwhelming and you desire peace, calm, and focus.

Please add your comments and thank Sara for sharing these beautiful tools with us ❤️

Sara Lopez is an intuitive coach, empath expert, and reiki healer in Vermont, U.S. She is the founder of Empath Magic, a digital community for empaths creating focused transformation.

Sara’s experience with chronic pelvic pain and severe anxiety in her 20’s finally led her on a journey to overcome overwhelm from high sensitivity. When she learned about highly sensitive people and empaths, she finally understood herself better and learned to navigate the world in a new way.

Her journey led her to teaching in the public schools for 14 years and then to doing an intensive apprenticeship with women’s health experts based in New York City. From there, she coached countless women struggling with pelvic pain.  She found something was missing from the women’s health coaching world: the emotional piece. When she began supporting women to focus on emotional healing, she was amazed to watch them find physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental balance and transformation.

Now, she guides empaths to create focused transformation from a place of confidence and calm. She believes empaths are healers of the world’s wounds who deserve to be better understood.  Her work has been published in the Sensitive Empowerment community, Core Spirit, and Period magazine. https://empathmagic.com

Answering HSP Questions with Julie & Wilow

Answering HSP Questions with Julie & Wilow

Julie and Willow answer your HSP Questions!

How can we stay regulated and balanced while we are feeling deep excitement so we can sleep? Can you speak to how perfectionism keeps us trapped from trying out new things and leading our lives with curiosity? I get severe overwhelm when driving, particularly in busy or unfamiliar areas. Also going to places such as airports. I was wondering what advice you might have for such situations When things get really busy for me I can become very drained and tired. My body can become achy and fatigued and also mentally it's like I have brain fog and can't process quickly or focus, and that leads to making mistakes. I know that it's because we are sensing and taking in so much and that we need to rest and practice self-care at such times. I'm wondering if you have any tips in terms of energy when going through busy times when you can't always practice those self-care tips that help preserve energy. How do/did you establish your boundary around what you share publically about your childhood when it comes to emotional neglect, childhood trauma, and parents? How can you find an HSP psychotherapist? I was wondering if you could share any tips you have to deactivate the flight or flight response when it kicks in. And More

think about emotional injury as the same as physical injury in the sense that it involves a time of care and nurturing healing. lovingly acknowledge the emotions, check in with your inner child with self-compassion, like how we might respond to children when they need support—loving, caring, gentle, patient, compassionate. remind yourself that the intensity of the feeling is temporary and won't feel this way forever. accept yourself as a deep feeler, think of the ebb and flow of nature, and accept your flow. stop your to-do list and focus instead on... "what do I need at this moment." Letting go of some responsibilities allows us to focus on our needs. It's ok to say no or change plans. up your self care and also spend a lot of time in nature, in water or near water, and with trees and quiet places. It's HSP medicine for most everything. slow down, let go, and ask for help if needed, prioritize tending to your wellness. cuddle pets, practice mindfulness, stare at the sky and watch the clouds move slowly, listen to the birds, observe tiny plants, leaves, blooms, make time to see the sunrise and sunset. The little things fill up our positivity tank to support the extra stressors. journal to reflect and process, weighted blankets, herbal teas, cuddling pets focus on the basics when exhausted…hydrating, making sure to eat something healthy, take baths, drink warm tea, lay under a weighted blanket, and allow yourself to just be. be kind and patient with yourself and not add additional pressures or expectations. We can turn to nature to remind us that the season of growth will come again, and it's ok to experience some dormancy and internal time as we work through whatever we might be experiencing. Limit news watching and balance it with positivity fill-ups (8 positives to neutralize 1 negative) Put action into helping and look for the helpers doing amazing things from their heart communities and podcasts like this one! connection to kind-hearted HSPs (join our live podcast episodes, events, and monthly Meet and Greets) more tools and support means you’ll be more resilient and balanced, learning conscious living choices that work for HSPs.

Redefining Masculinity. How the HSP and LGBTQ+ Community Can Influence and Lead us With William Allen. Hosted by Willow McIntosh

Redefining Masculinity. How the HSP and LGBTQ+ Community Can Influence and Lead us With William Allen. Hosted by Willow McIntosh

William writes...“On many occasions, Dr. Elaine Aron has written that Highly Sensitive People were designed by nature to perform an evolutionary function. We are the wise counselors, the cautious advisors, and the thoughtful and empathetic souls who aid the human race.

We are at an important juncture in human history. A form of exploitative and dominance-focused masculinity has been running the planet for millennia. The consequences of this form of masculinity are evidenced in the planet's current state. We as a planet are in a state of imbalance, as we allow this form of distorted masculinity to jeopardize our future.

After getting a degree in Psychology with an eye on doing psychology research, he recalibrated for a career in Information Technology. He found himself in a thirty-year career as an Information Technology manager at Wells Fargo who enjoyed managing highly intelligent, often difficult staff, many of whom were highly sensitive.

As we know it in the West, masculinity is not always inclusive, emotionally expressive, empathetic, intuitive, or nurturing – all qualities that HSPs come by naturally. As a result, HSP men have often been left out of this exclusive club, as have many others identifying as male. This must change not only for men's sake but also for the planet.

It is important to understand that masculinity is by and large a cultural construct and is learned. We can reshape the construct to be less toxic for men, allowing men to become fully human in their ability to be authentic, loving, strong, empathetic, and constructive. Being a male is not the issue. It is about the cloak of masculinity that many men wear, which is hurtful and dangerous. I believe that HSP men and members of the LGBTQ+ community can serve as role models for this new form of masculinity. These two communities share a common goal of recognition and inclusion.”

William Allen is an author with a writer’s heart and researcher’s mind.

He retired early from his corporate job to start his Hypno-coaching and neurofeedback brain training business, BrainPilots, in Bend, Oregon. In late 2016, he began his blog, The Sensitive Man, about his experiences, as a highly sensitive man. The blog became the genesis of his first book, Confessions of a Sensitive Man. His new book, On Being a Sensitive Man, is the follow-up book, which focuses on how to live in the world as a sensitive man.

He feels that HSP males need to take their keen insights and intuition and make them public. He would like to shed more light on highly sensitive males and the much-needed role they need to take in our society.

Do you have guilt or shame around being sensitive? A discussion with Julie and Willow

Do you have guilt or shame around being sensitive? A discussion with Julie and Willow

Guilt and shame tend to be a big problem for HSPs.

For the purposes of this episode, we are going to discuss this in relation to the trait of high sensitivity.

Guilt Culprits: We often try to please people. We don’t want to experience their disappointment. We try to do the right thing. We might feel guilty for setting boundaries, taking alone time, or needing to do things differently.

Shame culprits: Most of us have been told our whole lives that something is wrong with us for being “too sensitive” so we often walk around with shame about who we are.

Guilt and shame are exhausting and drain our energy. If we take alone time to restore but we feel guilty when we do it then we don’t restore. It even zaps us of our energy!

If we feel shame about who we are we have a hard time putting ourselves out into the world and deeply connecting to who we really are and finding our life purpose.

Ways to intentionally let go of guilt and shame

1. Acknowledge, normalize and validate your experiences

2. Learn about your positive gifts within this trait of high sensitivity.

3. Practice self-compassion for the hard feelings as it helps us feel more resilient too

4. Set boundaries. Redirect to internal focus. Remind yourself why you had to set that boundary or say no and remember your inner child’s needs.

5. Know that when we give up our needs we don’t thrive and that’s not good for anyone. Your needs are not less important than other people's needs.

6. Shift your mindset. It’s not possible to “please” anyone. That’s not our job, that’s their job.

7. Surround yourself with people who support you and limit or let go of those that don’t. Know that this community supports you! ❤️

8. Be intentional and give time to consciously shift

9. Seek out support from an HSP Psychotherapist who can be a great source of support to guide us through the deep parts. Check out the HSP Practitioners Directory!

10. Keep practicing! The more you practice the easier it is to release the guilt and shame.

HSPs & Sensory Overload with Julie and Willow

HSPs & Sensory Overload with Julie and Willow

Quick Definition: Sensory overload is when our senses take in more information than our brain can keep up with processing.

In this episode:

Problem: HSPs not living to their fullest potential and the world needs you Purpose: educate and validate that Sensory Overload is a real experience & give you tools & support Offer solutions for you to live your best life (helps teens and children too!)

We take in more data than the majority.  When our brain is overwhelmed by this input, it enters the fight/flight/freeze mode making us want to flee or fight or we might shut down. Once that is activated everything changes!

We release chemicals into the body that can make our heart race, shift how our body uses oxygen and how it functions in general. We might feel unwell and overwhelmed and lose access to our cognitive brain, lose focus and memory, have an emotional reaction/meltdown/anger burst/irritability we might get digestive issues, rashes, headaches, migraines, and other short-term, long-term health issues

Imagine that happening every day and what impact that might have on our health! Sensory overload is really hard sometimes and this is just a portion of our experience.

Solutions:

Acknowledge Normalize Validate Mindset shift You aren’t “too sensitive”, the world is too loud and chaotic. You are born sensitive because the population needs a group of people taking in more data and who have higher levels of awareness. But society is not set up for our sensitivity levels and can often cause sensory overload (think about how loud garden equipment is or loud cars or motorcycles, bus brakes, airplanes, announcements, alarms), etc Practice self-compassion instead of judgment (5 pounds vs 1000) Be alone a couple of hours daily in quiet nature Try this Spend a few days alone in a quiet and peaceful nature setting and discover who you are without sensory overload! It’s life-changing to realize you can feel so much peace and bliss in nature. Plus creativity increases when you aren't in overload! Practice “HSP” Self-care (balance lowers sensitivity challenges) Advocate for your needs Live consciously to lower sensory overload

Exploring Nontraditional Relationships for HSPs with Sarah Mathews, LMFT

Exploring Nontraditional Relationships for HSPs with Sarah Mathews, LMFT

My goal for this conversation with Sarah is that we open minds to the possibility that sometimes what’s been traditionally taught to us might not work for us and that we are free to explore what does! I want to normalize that doing things differently is OK! I want to normalize that doing things that work for us is a good thing!

I spent many years forcing myself into the boxes that were given to me that never quite fit and it’s my mission to help HSPs hear the messages that it’s ok to do something non-traditional.

For example, I think many HSPs want to have separate sleeping spaces or live separately and I’ll share some of my personal experiences with that with the hope to normalize it and show that there are many different ways to be in relationships that can sometimes work better for HSPs. You don’t even have to be in a relationship either! Many HSP Empaths especially find it feels better being single. Our goal is to normalize what feels best to you.

Sarah shares her personal experiences with polyamory and ethical non-monogamous relationships in hopes that we open minds to the fact that there are many different ways to be in relationships.

I personally love the idea of no labels, no boxes, no “shoulds” and creating our own way based on what intuitively feels right for us.

Part of empowerment for me means freedom to live in the way that works for us and acceptance and openness to many different ways of doing things!

Sarah is a marriage and family therapist practicing in Minneapolis, MN and specializes in highly sensitive individuals, relationships, and sexuality. She is bisexual and polyamorous and believes there are many ways to have fulfilling, healthy, and thriving relationships.

Sensitive Leaders are Needed in Many Areas of Life with Julie and Willow

Sensitive Leaders are Needed in Many Areas of Life with Julie and Willow

In this episode, we talk about…

Traditional leadership vs Sensitive leadership
Areas HSPs are needed
Challenges and solutions to HSPs in leadership

From the Sensitive Empowerment Community here were qualities that HSPs named about Traditional Leadership vs Sensitive Leadership…

Traditional Leadership

Alpha
Dominant
Patriarchal
Intimidating
Unhealthy
Instills shame
Often makes people feel smaller
People do things out of fear or shame
Loudest ones valued
Quiet ones lost

Sensitive Leadership

Kind-hearted and supportive
Empathetic, Compassionate
Helps you learn from mistakes without judgment
Puts together great teams, knows the gifts in others, and how to bring out their best
They empower and guide, and instill a desire to want to do better
Believes in the greater mission, can often see the whole picture and bring out passions in others
Good listener
Efficient
Instills confidence
Human-centered, heart-centered helps to nurture and build, rather than just profit
More open-minded and accepting
The glue that holds others together
Increased awareness and perspective
Choose directions for the greater good, rather than doing things the way they always have done

Challenges to become a leader as expressed by HSPs we spoke with…

Fear of imbalance in time and energy
Pressure
High expectations
Too much responsibility

Solutions

Lead in areas you are passionate about
Paradigm shift: do it your way!
Maintain boundaries
Protect your energy & Grounding work
Fierce self-care the HSP way
Mindset shifts
Create structure that works for an HSP
Work smarter and more efficiently (HSPs good at that)
Increase collaboration
Can’t do it all because you care the most, need a talented team for support
Stand shoulder to shoulder with others relaying our ideas
The best leaders aren’t perfect, they’re those who care about, support and mentor, and guide.

The Healing Power of Being an Empath with Dr. Judith Orloff

The Healing Power of Being an Empath with Dr. Judith Orloff

Dr. Judith Orloff shares:

"As a psychiatrist and an empath, I am fascinated by how the phenomenon of empathy works. I feel passionately that empathy is the medicine the world needs right now. Empathy will be the deciding factor between war and peace, between hatred and tolerance. We need to grow larger than our smaller selves and egos to be empathic in our lives. Empathy is the game-changer. It is the trait that will ultimately save the world.

I feel passionately that empathy is the medicine the world needs right now. Empathy will be the deciding factor between war and peace, between hatred and tolerance. Empathy is the game changer. It is the trait that will ultimately save the world.

There is a powerful connection between your emotions, intuition, and empathy. The magic comes when you learn how to tap into each of them to fully access your sensitivities without going on overload or becoming drained.

In this talk Dr. Orloff answers these questions:

As a conventionally trained physician, you are also an empath. What is an empath and what are the neuroscience findings explaining the empath experience? What is the difference between an HSP and an Empath? What are the different types of empaths and the gifts? How can empaths stop absorbing the emotions and physical symptoms of others and develop self-protection techniques so we can enjoy the gifts of sensitivity? Why are empaths misdiagnosed with sensory processing disorder, major depression, and panic attacks? What is the correct diagnosis? What is your greatest vision for the role of empaths in this world, in your lifetime and beyond and how can we as a collective support and continue your important voice in this field?

Judith Orloff, MD is the New York Times best-selling author of The Empath’s Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People. Her latest book Thriving as an Empath offers daily self-care tools for sensitive people along with its companion The Empath’s Empowerment Journal. Dr. Orloff is a psychiatrist, an empath, and is on the UCLA Psychiatric Clinical Faculty. She synthesizes the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition, energy, and spirituality. Dr. Orloff also specializes in treating highly sensitive, empathic people in her private practice. Dr. Orloff’s work has been featured on The Today Show, CNN, Oprah Magazine, the New York Times. Dr. Orloff has spoken at Google-LA and has a popular TEDX talk. Her other books are Emotional Freedom and Guide to Intuitive Healing. Feel to Heal: Regulate your Emotions through the Power of Music with Ada & Nathan

Join us for a generative discussion on how we can leverage the power of music in our everyday lives to help us feel, heal, and thrive. This special session will include an immersive sound bath meditation to experience the power of sound healing in practice.

As highly sensitive people, we feel the world more acutely than others. And yet, we live in a culture that fears emotion. Often, we deny, repress, and hide our emotions, feeling like there is something wrong with us when we experience anger, anxiety, frustration, insecurity, overwhelm, and more. Left unexpressed, our emotions can accumulate into dis-ease, physically, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually. But the truth is, we must feel in order to heal. Music is a powerfully under-utilized resource to help us regulate and process our emotions so that we can increase our resilience for uncomfortable feelings and life stressors, release pent up and painful emotional energy, and ultimately calm our nervous systems to regain internal balance. Join us to experience it for yourself!

We want all HSP's to know that this powerful resource of music and sound healing can be used regularly to help them cultivate emotional resilience and nervous system regulation in their lives. AND that it can help us to tap more deeply into our superpowers for empathy, intuition, and creativity so that we can share our gifts more fully with the world.

Ada Ketchie and Nathan Getzin are alchemists of the human heart, helping people cultivate greater mindfulness, healing, and self-actualization through the ineffable power of music. As co-founders of Wakes they use their expertise as musicians, storytellers, yoga teachers, healers, and coaches to create experiences that offer radical transformation of mind, body and spirit. As a multi-passionate mama, musician, artist, and pattern-shifter I like to use my creativity in a variety of ways to inspire healing and the Inner Journey. I know I look human but let’s be totally honest…I’m actually made of wildflowers, courage, teardrops, and starlight.

I’m HSP intuitive and tend to have a little extra Vata energy swirling around. My nervous system demands I go at a gentle pace and sometimes I’m annoyed having to ground my airy-faerie butt.

As a narcissism abuse survivor I’ve had to do a lot of healing around people-pleasing and co-dependence. I used to believe there wasn’t anything “more sparkles” couldn’t solve until one loss after another knocked the sparkles out of me and pushed me down a dark corridor. I lost my boobs, my ovaries, my health, my mom and my dog all in very short succession. The gift in that gritty loss journey was a realization that I am valuable and worthy “As Is”…no sparkles needed.

My creations are for people wanting to dwell more deeply with their divine sunshine rays and infuse self-love into their lives. I hope you find something here that helps you feel refreshed and inspires the inner journey.

The Power of Nutrition and Functional Medicine for Supporting HSPs with Anxiety and Depression with Anastasia Smith

Have you ever wondered how what you eat can impact brain structure and function? Are you curious to know what, if any role diet plays in mood? Research shows that factors such as our blood sugar levels, nutrient deficiencies, and gut microbiome imbalances can all play pivotal roles in our experience of mental health. Join us to learn about the nutrients that are essential to keeping the brain and the nervous system happy, as well as how to balance neurotransmitters. You'll also learn how to stabilize blood sugar levels to prevent symptoms of anxiety and low mood, as well as covering the fascinating link between the gut and the brain and what to eat to optimize digestion.

About Anastasia:

Anastasia is the founder of Whole Mind Health and is a Registered Nutritionist that specializes in nutrition and its role in mental health and neuroscience. She is passionate about empowering people with the tools to take their mental health into their own hands and has been working for the past 5 years with clients suffering from a wide range of psychiatric conditions, such as depression, generalized anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Anastasia believes that HSP and those suffering from anxiety and depression are often the 'canaries in the coal mine', being the first to highlight the mismatch between our biology and our toxic modern environment through symptoms of poor mental health. Honor Your Intuition and Use it as Your Guide with Julie and Willow

Honor Your Intuition and Use it as Your Guide with Julie and Willow

Your body gives you intake within your intuition every day.

It gives you extra important information,  helps with making decisions, knowing what’s right for you, if you can trust someone, and gives you cues about what you need for your health and well-being.

What body cues do you observe when something isn't quite right?

What does your intuition feel like when something is right for you?

In what ways does your intuition help you?

Intuitive healing energy can be powerful in HSPs. Believe in healing and stay open to receiving it.

We have an extra level of conscious awareness and stronger intuition, giving us additional information and a deeper understanding.

4 main types of intuition

Clairsentience: most common, involves feelings: physical feelings, emotional feelings, or energetic feelings. intuitive hits, pick up on other people's energies and emotions, feeling other people's energies and emotions as if they were their own. Claircognizance: thoughts that seem to just drop into your head. Suddenly, you just know, like an intuition "download" Clairaudience: sounds like someone talking in your mind, calm and clear. Clairvoyance: It can look like a flash of a mental image or scene and is often symbolic or metaphorical.

How to strengthen and tap into your intuition

Quiet the mind, focus on the breath, and listen to and scan your body every day.
Balance the sensitive nervous system, giving yourself daily alone time, time in nature, meditation, mindfulness, and slowing down
Protect your energy and separate your energy from others (Grounding/Shielding)
Practice boundaries around anyone that lowers your vibration.
Consciously spend time in positive spaces with higher vibrational energy. Be around others who support your gifts
Tune into the body. Are you sending loving energy to your body? Are you talking to your body with self-love? Are you taking care of your physical body with love? Are you moving your body in healthy ways? These are all conscious ways to open even more to our intuition.
Listen to your body If your body is tired, rest. If your body needs something, pay attention, and prioritize that need.

We don't help the world by taking on its pain.

Separate, ground, and protect your energy.
Develop tools for what you need.
Be compassionate and loving with yourself.
Send positive energy into your body every day.
Trust and value your intuition.

We can remember and honor the Black leaders before us and we can also honor the new and upcoming leaders during Black History Month.  Black HSP's can struggle more than others with the inner dialogue of who we should be in the world and deeply feel the turmoil and injustice in the world.  Both of our generation and generations before us.   We all want to find our own path and can be faced with family or authorities telling us who we should be, cannot be or will never be.   I want to have a conversation with other Black HSP's who struggle with choosing to become the leader they are meant to be or settling into the identity that others put upon you.  We are all whole and complete as we are and have the power to heal old wounds and beliefs to become the leader we were meant to be within and without.

Holistic Health Practitioner and Health Strategy Coach LMT, CES, FMS Bio: Michael is on a mission to teach the world that we are all capable of intrinsic healing and transformation both mentally and physically. If we start with foundational health, we can build upon this foundation to create the empowered life we want to live. Michael overcame, healed, and transformed from having Tourette syndrome, severe asthma, ADHD, obesity, and an eating addiction and now helps others embody health to become empowered to live a life of joy, peace and success. He is a US Marine, a Holistic Health Practitioner, and Health Strategy Coach. https://michaelacoles.com/

HSPs and The Polyvagal Theory of Stress with Sukie Baxter

HSPs and The Polyvagal Theory of Stress with Sukie Baxter

Understanding the Polyvagal Theory of stress and how stress impacts your biology as an HSP. We'll dig into the concept of nervous system regulation and how HSPs can use it to turn their sensitivity into a superpower.
Here are some questions answered in this event:
1. What is Polyvagal Theory and how might it help HSPs to understand it?
2. How might regulating the nervous system lower the challenges of sensitivity?
3. How can HSPs leverage Polyvagal Theory to enable their unique creative genius to thrive?
Also we had some discussion on the marginalized experience of the LGBTQ community and the black community and how those communities experience the impact of the lack of safety are also important to understand when we work toward moving humanity forward. Sukie shares..."I would like to help HSPs understand that they are not broken or damaged and empower them with tools they can use to thrive as an HSP in a chaotic world that doesn't always value the inherent skills and abilities that we bring to the table. One of my favorite quotes ever is "It's not a measure of health to be well adjusted in a profoundly sick society." I firmly believe that it is by empowering each person to live from their own place of truth rather than conform to a contrived cultural norm that we will ultimately heal as a society."
Sukie Baxter is the founder of Whole Body Revolution where she helps ambitious high performers and creative geniuses to activate their full human potential and achieve an extraordinary physical and mental edge. Confidence a Discussion with Julie and Willow

Confidence a Discussion with Julie and Willow

I’ve noticed that so often something gets in the way of HSPs believing and accessing Confidence. Many of us have received messages our whole life that something is wrong with us for being so sensitive. Or maybe we have been so overwhelmed by the challenges of our sensitive nervous system that we are in survival mode, instead of truly living our life with purpose. Not having confidence can show up in the following ways not exploring your needs not advocating for your needs saying yes when you want to say no not moving forward if something isn’t perfect or being stuck in fear  of failure not doing something you want because you are pleasing others instead not believing you are worthy or good enough not living a life that honors and aligns with your values not starting or growing the business your calling wants of you All of this means your light won’t shine on others.  Let’s have a discussion about confidence. What is stopping you from what you want? What would you need to do to find it and let go of what’s holding you back from accessing the most beautiful parts of yourself and your inner gifts? I’ve been hearing a lot of HSPs be held back from the worry of judgment from others or being different or listening to others' expectations of you, or even self-judgment and fear of failure. Why is that? What would it take for you to let go of that? Worrying about what people think of us can zap our energy, taking away precious energy that could be used for creativity, growing, and embracing our life. Can we instead live in a space that honors our needs in the world? Can we stop thinking we need to fit in and be perfect and embrace our uniqueness? Can we commit to a more conscious way of living? Can we stay aware of which tools we need to use and develop to get out of survival mode and thrive? Can we practice self-compassion when we don’t get it all right? What could happen if you just decided to love and honor your sensitivity and embrace your uniqueness and do that thing you really want to do even if it’s not perfect. What could happen if you believe in your value? Please share these episodes to help other HSPs. Leave comments or voicemails, and explore all episodes at HSPpodcast.com. "The material that you both shared in this gem-packed presentation took me to my Growth Journal where I wrote as fast as I could, filling 5 big pages trying to capture your keen insights."

"I too was taking notes like crazy during the podcast, and I'm planning on listening all the way through again this evening. Just "simple" nuggets like Julie's, "I am confident BECAUSE I have tools, self-compassion..." and Jenni's "Feeling like you belong gives you confidence".... have given me so much to reflect upon. It was truly a powerful discussion and so affirming! Thank you again, Julie and Willow!"

"Oh my goodness! This all confirmed my own thoughts, feelings, experiences, and healing process. Such validation that I am indeed on the right track with how to be of highest service. I am indeed listening to that deep intuition AND embracing my unique abilities as a coach and especially as a hypnotherapist to help others to do the same! Bravo Julie Bjelland and Willow McIntosh for another uplifting event."

Being a Highly Sensitive Person While Black with Sydney James

Being a Highly Sensitive Person While Black with Sydney James

From Sydney, "Being a Highly Sensitive Person has its own unique set of challenges and beautiful moments. When we factor in the added worldview of being a person of color, it changes the way in which we identify and relate to our sensitivities and sometimes we may not give ourselves permission to show up authentically. Join the discussion in identifying what may be hindering you from acceptance of your sensitive trait and tips on navigating the world as a highly sensitive person while black.

I want my HSP audience to receive the message that they don't have to align with the narrative that sensitivity means weakness and can embrace that side of themselves if it's there."

Sydney promotes healing, nurturing an authentic self-image and strengthening relationships in all that she does. Deep Dive Discussions with Julie-Ask me anything!

Deep Dive Discussions with Julie-Ask me anything!

Answering live HSPquestions! Some of the Questions Covered...

Why is it easier to relax when I'm in my own space and on my own?
How can we understand where we end and the cultural expectations begin? Do I want something or does society tell me that I should want something?
Can you talk about the HSP experience of shyness or introverts and social interactions?
Can you explain more about how proprioceptors calm you?
Do the self-care routines you talk about work for chronic stress recovery as well as just daily maintenance, or is there more you need to do to heal your nervous system if you've been under chronic stress for a long time (several years)?
Do you believe that HSPs tend to be more co-dependent than others to moderate stress?
Do you find a correlation between PTSD & HSP whereby a person born as an HSP suffers traumatic events and copes/or not with them differently than the other 80%?
You've mentioned that HSPs should ideally get a minimum of 2 hours of daily processing time plus one day off per week. Can you please talk about what kinds of activities would be considered "processing" activities?
I’m wondering as in your podcast some time ago, you talked about the effect inner work has had on your wellbeing. Could you talk about what kind of inner work you have been through?
You talked about how HSPs can often be in a hypervigilant place on a daily basis... I wonder if you can speak to what the origins of this is, how do we become aware and once we become aware what are some ways to manage that hypervigilant state?

How to Protect Your Energy with Julie and Willow

How to Protect Your Energy with Julie and Willow

Protecting our energy is incredibly important, and yet, many of us have not been taught this essential skill.  How do we protect ourselves when we have to be around difficult people or negative energy?  HSP Empaths particularly are more challenged by being around negative energy.

Are you an HSP Empath? Those that score 38 or higher on my Sensitivity Quiz might be.

We are also more gifted in reading the language of energy which gives us an incredible amount of information, most people miss.  It's essential to know how to harness it, separate it, and protect it or we can be overwhelmed and overcome by it, absorbing everyone's energy, making it difficult to know where ours ends, and another begins.

In this episode, Willow and I discuss:

The language of Energy Where HSP Empaths fall on the spectrum of sensitivity Grounding techniques that are essential for HSP Empaths The value of being able to connect to Energy Importance of self-care and boundaries for wellness When someone has a hole in their bucket Importance of separating and protecting  your energy and how we do it Connecting to your flow How to read what feels right and what doesn't What you are responsible for and what is not your job description Understanding your value and growing self-love Changing old narratives and reframing Embracing empowerment And More!

Discover Your Calling: An Inspiring Mastermind with Willow McIntosh

Discover Your Calling: An Inspiring Mastermind with Willow McIntosh

Wow, this was a powerful event that moved me and several of us to tears. Willow has an extraordinary gift of facilitating a connection of HSPs to their gifts!

You are invited to a mastermind with Willow McIntosh showing you how to turn your high sensitivity into high sensory intelligence for service, business and soul fulfillment!

Until we witness for ourselves what it is like to see the world as a deep sensory experience, it is very difficult to bring our purpose into action.

What is the process?

It is a facilitation designed to bring you into ownership with your high sensory intelligence and alignment with your purpose.

There will be a presentation about the process with a live facilitation included with the sole focus of empowering you into the recognition of who you are and you are here to serve.

The process itself is a guided facilitation using a unique process of deep inquiry based on years of research and experience.

It includes:

01. A direct experience of your unique cognitive reality

The way in which you see the world through the eyes of high sensory intelligence is unique. It is accurately designed to support the very way in which you are here to serve. This process enables you to witness it for yourself (often for the first time) allowing you to take full ownership.

02. The journey of your life holds the key to your transformation

As a high sensory lightworker, life will have been challenging you in a particular area. By seeing this in an entirely new light you will be able to reframe it in such a way that it will reveal your area of expertise. Furthermore, you will get a powerful insight into who your ideal clients are.

03. The cause in your life that is most important to you.

Ever since you were a child there will have been a calling that you hold most dear. Everything pivots around the discovery of this from a place of deep acknowledgment. Once this is seen with higher awareness the meaning of your life will take on a whole new perspective.

What are the outcomes this is intended to give you?

A direct experience of your gifts & purpose A new relationship to your own past A clear strategy for career and business Clarity on who you are born to serve How to benefit from your gifts financially An empowering sense of coming home to yourself, your purpose and meaning in life.

Teaching a Grounding Technique & Answering Questions

Teaching a Grounding Technique & Answering Questions

We started out with a beautiful grounding technique followed by answering questions from HSPs!

“Tips for staying calm no matter what the outcome of the US election!”☺️

“I am amazed at how little I know about my own emotions. I am now using emotions wheels to help me identify emotions when they occur. I thought (assumed!) that I knew what emotions were when they occurred. Thanks to you I am listening and learning so much.”

“What is the connection with Sensitives and overeating for comfort? Especially as I get older I’d like to be good to my body with healthful eating.”

"I'm new to this community and so excited to be here. I have recently started working in non profit work as a mental health counselor, love the work, but means back-to-back clients, never-ending paperwork, and being on the short road to burnout! I want to accrue enough hours to get licensed so this job is where I'll likely stay for the next 2 years but I end the day feeling so wired and tired, anxious, flushed, my sleep's suffering... As a fellow therapist, any advice for newbie therapists? Thanks!"

"What are your favorite resources for HSPs who are also empaths?"

"My dog is having seizures, how do you recommend I handle this situation emotionally at the time he is having his seizures?"

"Is being skeptical a trait of being HSP? I find especially more lately that I am very skeptical of people & their motives?"

"I had some friendship trauma in my teens and early 20s which made me feel afraid to develop new friendships for years….I want to be open and honest about my past traumas when appropriate, but I have a fear of judgment around friendships. Do you have any advice on how I could share my experience of friendships in an empowered way?"

How to Avoid and Heal From Toxic Relationships, with Julie and Willow

How to Avoid and Heal From Toxic Relationships, with Julie and Willow

HSPs tend to be over-givers and toxic people tend to be over-takers. This dynamic has been played out for many of us either in our families, friendships, romantic relationships, or even with work colleagues.

Types of toxic relationships included in this discussion:

Family Romantic Friendships Work

Relationship stages

Honeymoon stage (6 months-brain on drugs)
Conflict stage (seek therapy early!)
Deeper love

Here are some pieces discussed:

Do internal growth and empowerment work
(A big Red flag can be we are not healthy, balanced ourselves) this is first priority
Be comfortable to be yourself and feel good around them, you feel accepted for who you are, they can compromise and be understanding.

Recognizing Red Flags in Toxic Relationships

They might be very self-absorbed, not attentive, and have a sense of entitlement, and require excessive admiration
They put you down,  you don’t feel good about yourself when with them
Monopolize conversations or look down on people
Ignore your needs
Take advantage of others to get what they want
Not willing to compromise or recognize the needs and feelings of others
Become impatient or angry when they don't get what they want or receive special treatment
Have significant problems in their relationships and easily feel slighted
React with rage or contempt and try to belittle the other person to make themselves appear superior
Have difficulty regulating emotions and behavior

A few questions answered

If you can't cut out the toxic person and need to negotiate, how to protect your energies as an HSP? I’ve had to create some really strong boundaries with a parent, but I struggle with guilt and feel judged.  Any tips for working with the guilt and “shoulds”? I go in waves of feeling empowered or feeling “bad” or selfish? Someone wanted us to cover how to balance not overgiving and how to avoid toxic people. “I want to be open to friendships and relationships but have trouble knowing if someone is genuine and a good person. I used to be too trusting and now I’ve gone to the other spectrum of not trusting anyone because I’ve been so hurt in the past.”

Please share this episode and review the podcast to help us help more HSPs!

What was modeled in our childhood can impact how we view relationships and perceive what is ok and what isn’t.

Ask Julie!

Ask Julie!

Today we celebrate our 100th Episode on World HSP Day! Yay!  I'm answering HSP questions!

Here are the questions HSPs asked from my Sensitive Empowerment Community!

I would like to understand the difference between the two terms Processing time vs Restorative time a little better. how to help ourselves when we experience feelings of disappointment. In the brain training course, we learn that when we are in fight/flight mode and this reaches a certain point of overwhelm with emotions and stress that we can get stuck in our emotional brain and can't access the logical brain at that point. Would this be the same for physical symptoms that are triggered? Is the brain training course for HSPs suitable for teenagers around 16-17 years or is it mainly a program for adults? Why is it so hard to deal with making a mistake? Even when it’s not my mistake & the mistake of a loved one, I feel so responsible. I'm new here and in Week 3 of Brain Training for HSP's. My question is: what can I say to myself when I have a poor night(s) of sleep (mainly due to peri-menopause) and I need to go to work and do my best to get through the day..? :) Thank you! Do you have any grounding or shielding exercises that you recommend to help HSPs during these intense times? I want to stay informed but COVID, wildfires, US election, racism, etc can all be overwhelming. The amount of stuff going on is hard to process. Thank you! What is the proper use of alcohol for HSPs? Less? None? Hi Julie you recommend 1-2 hrs of alone, unstructured time per day but I am wondering if that has to be consecutive. I tend to prioritize sleep but that leaves me little time for much else. I was wondering, where and what is triggered in HSP's regarding an aversion by some of us to scary movies and or violence and also where or what is triggered in us that makes us more empathetic?

I do live events in my Sensitive Empowerment Community every week and I'm there every day offering support.   Hope you join our beautiful HSP family!

Our Challenges Shape Our Purpose with Julie & Willow

Our Challenges Shape Our Purpose with Julie & Willow

Current times are challenging. Several months into a pandemic with no known end in sight, dividing families, economic crisis, racial unrest, political divide, climate crisis, etc. Families are struggling. It’s easy for fear to take over in all this uncertainty and when you combine the intensity of emotion we experience as HSPs it can be overwhelming. In survival mode, we just try to get through the day but there is something different about those listening right now. You are taking a step toward empowerment by choosing to listen to this podcast. Those of you attending live have taken several steps to join our Sensitive Empowerment Community and that’s taking intentional action toward change and that is exciting! You are open to a shift away from inaction to action and a shift in mindset. Consider this...

When you lift heavy weights it tears down muscle tissue. But when you feed your body the right nutrition afterward, the muscles repair themselves and become even stronger than before. If we think of challenges in the same way we might be torn down from them but with the right care and balance, we can be even stronger. Just as a muscle is stronger after the repair, so are we!

You might have noticed that in our own stories and in the HSP guests we’ve had that most of the HSPs rising up into their potential, helping others in some way, started out of a challenge. How can we become stronger in this current challenge?

Learn about trait Understand that self-care for HSPs is different than the majority Learn how to honor and advocate for your needs Spend time with other HSPs, like in our Sensitive Empowerment Community to normalize and validate your experience Learn tools created for HSPs to balance your sensitive nervous system Grow self-compassion and self-love Take intentional action to move toward change Find meaning and do what fulfills you Know your value Live consciously instead of unconsciously

Know that your purpose can be found within this challenge. What calls out to you? Are you listening? Let’s discuss it!

What is Joy for an HSP? with Willow and Julie

What is Joy for an HSP? with Willow and Julie

Joy! What does it look and feel like to be truly happy as an HSP? What is it exactly we are striving for? Are we often comparing our happiness to what it looks like in non HSPs? The pursuit of happiness is a huge topic in itself and is often referred to as being only attained through the acceptance that we can’t be happy all the time! However it goes deeper and research indicates that happiness means the pursuit of meaning, service and authentic social relationships. Whilst there is certainly a need for meaning, service and authentic relationships for us, how should we be pursuing this as HSPs? What do these things really look like for us? What do we value as most important in our lives as HSPs that perhaps is not being acknowledged when we compare to the happiness of non HSPs? Are we truly recognising and honouring our needs? Are we being honest about what truly makes us feel a sense of contentment, achievement and happiness? Where might we be over processing or over complicating what happiness really means to us? Join us this week as we consider the importance of recognizing whether we are on the right path in the pursuit of our own individual happiness as an HSP.

Feedback about the course:

“Julie draws on her own unique experiences as well as her many years of professional knowledge and expertise to bring together the practical tools, tips and techniques HSPs need to thrive in their online business.  Julie Bjelland is the real deal and her authenticity and genuine desire to help HSPs prosper and succeed certainly shines through in course content and presentation.  The course offers very valuable and necessary information, effectively integrating what HSPs need to build strength and resiliency for themselves and for the growth of their business.

There is so much to be learnt and shared with the world and with the right tools and support, HSPs are in the perfect position to do this.  Participating in this self-paced program will put many things in perspective and provide a solid platform to continuously adapt, evolve and ultimately thrive in your business.

Thank you, Julie for all the encouragement, compassion, inspiration and direction you offer in this well designed and well-rounded course for HSPs."   -Andrea Weber, Founder of Expansive Happiness

Using Our Emotions To Find Peace in Times of Stress with Luciana Garcia

Using Our Emotions To Find Peace in Times of Stress with Luciana Garcia

Loved the power of this conversation so much!  Enjoy the meditation she does at the end too!

Emotional integration ( the mindfulness of feeling) is a unique technique that everyone can learn to create a healthy and positive relationship with their emotions especially for those of us that are highly sensitive people.

Lucia shares: "I would love to talk about the importance of normalizing feeling our emotions, and how to do that. For us HSP we feel so much, that it's easy to get overwhelmed and shut down. Emotional Integration and meditation have transformed the lives of many people and I would love to talk about how it offers a new tool and hope for those that need it."

Luciana Garcia is an ordained Buddhist priest and emotional mastery coach, who teaches other women how to master their emotions by using the unique technique of emotional integration (the mindfulness of emotions). Using this method, she has dropped 80 lbs and overcame premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). She has a Degree in Mind/Body Transformational Psychology and is an ordained Acharya from the Mahajrya Buddhist Tradition. She has been featured in KFoxtv Channel 14 and leads the #itstimetofeel moment, where she encourages women to see their emotions as their super power to build the relationships, families, and businesses of their dreams. www.theemotionalmasterycoach.com

HSPs Ask Julie Questions

Here are the questions submitted from my Sensitive Empowerment community.

What are some effective ways I can practice to try to quiet or tune out the words that others have said to me so that I can focus on taking care of myself?

I often find that I am responding to what's going on outside of me, and in particular, what others are thinking about me, instead of responding to what is going on inside of me. In doing so, I lose touch with myself and don't get my needs met a lot of the time.

Although EHS (electromagnetic sensitivity) has very physical symptoms, I'm wondering about the emotional connection, have you noticed these types of physical-emotional connections, and do people benefit if they are able to work through these things as well as the physical symptoms?

I know many HSPs suffer from chronic illnesses, and I'm wondering if there are any particular kinds of illnesses we tend to suffer from more than others?

I’m trying to figure out “healthy helping” and could use some insight on this. Most recommendations of putting your oxygen mask on first etc make sense but I think my deeply caring side struggles so much with thinking others are suffering.

I think us HSPs are natural helpers and so others often come to us for support. But how to balance being there for others with our own needs for rest, self-care, etc. and not to get overwhelmed?

I suffer a great deal with injustice to humanity. It paralyzes me. It could be at any level and it affects me. There are times I can't listen or read the news because it hurts so much. I know what happens out there is greater than myself and there is so much one can do, but if it wouldn't bother me so much maybe I could do things about it. That's one of my goals now that I joined this group, to focus and be creative about it. But, I would like to know if you have some suggestions to manage those strong feelings about injustice.

I love to learn, I am always learning something and it is a great joy for me, but I could be in the middle of learning something (and writing at the same time) and I get so happy about what I am learning that I have to stop and process it for a while before returning to what I was learning/writing/developing ideas, etc, but in that process, I interrupt ideas and let them go, which disappoints me, need suggestions.

I would like some advice on how to believe more in myself. Especially when it comes to my creative work. There always seems to be part of me that panics when I think about showing my art, my stories, etc. Where I see other writers and think "they are so much better than me", how to collect braveness in my personal creativity. For writing and painting. There I wobble so much more and find myself burying myself in anxiety, "not good enough", etc. Any suggestions?

I would be really curious to hear any suggestions or ideas you may have about how to slow down to get the rest you need when life does not slow down with you.

I’m wondering about how to set boundaries with friends. I really need social time but I get exhausted. I love sharing and talking with friends about our experiences and inner lives but some of my friends tell very detailed stories and I just can’t listen for that long. I know I need to say something but I’m not sure what to say or how it might look.

Honoring Authenticity and Diversity with Julie and Willow

Honoring Authenticity and Diversity with Julie and Willow

Discussing honoring sensitivity, LGBTQ equality, equal rights, educating ourselves about how to heal systemic racism and how we can support black, indigenous people of color  (BIPOC)

So important for us to be ourselves in the world and not only accept differences but to embrace differences
Let’s start celebrating the beauty of all of our differences.  Why would we want to be the same? It is in the differences that make us valuable and beautiful in the world.
I share my own story of hiding who I was as I tried to be in the role of being "perfect" and lost who I was and how both my personal life and my business thrived when I stepped into my own authenticity.
Lots of work to be done for equality: we still have to consider safety and acceptance as a consideration for where we live.

Our ancestors who lived in tribes honored the sensitive in the group because of our natural gifts. We were the highly valued and respected healers, guides, and leaders of the tribe because of our unique gifts. This high sensitivity trait evolved for the particular survival of the population because of our unique gifts and their importance to the world.

Somewhere along the way, society got too busy and started giving us messages that who we are and how we experience the world is different and wrong in some way. I say it’s time to change that message back into a place of honoring who we are and embracing diversity in general.

Why is there such a push to have everyone be the same? Differences are needed and beautiful and valuable.  With differences comes important perspective, creativity, details, and information!  It’s time to embrace and honor differences!

Let’s be the change the world needs and cherish authenticity and a loving acceptance of everyone.  Let’s honor the sensitive. Let’s embrace the fluidity and spectrum of sexuality and gender.  Let’s cherish Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.  I truly believe it is HSPs that care so deeply for others that can be part of the change.

Let’s open to, embrace, honor, and celebrate the superpowers of the sensitive and the beauty of diversity.

Here are some of the questions we covered in today's event.

I would like to understand more about being HSP and being empathic.  Are they one in the same or are there differences between the two?    I was wondering if you have any suggestions on how to handle the fear of "disappointing/hurting" someone when you say no or need to correct them on something? I’m wondering how many HSP’s also struggle with addiction in some sort of way. Any tips or support would be appreciated. Are there any major efforts out there to educate parents, doctors, teachers, human resources, and the general public about the trait of HSP's and what to look for? What a positive game-changer it could be for so many HSP's if this trait was common knowledge. I'm curious if there is a link between being HSP and being introverted? Where I am, things are opening up and I'm expected to soon work in the office. How can we manage the fear of venturing out when it seems much safer and calmer at home, especially if it does not seem necessary?  One of my biggest struggles with being an HSP is how to communicate effectively when I am in a heated situation, for example, when someone is angry or screaming. I tend to freeze and lose my ability to speak and then feel irate later. I want to be able to address the situation calmly and in my power but am often so flooded with strong emotion I can not speak. I have the same question, except I don't freeze, I fight. And can't stop until everything I have ever thought comes out. When a fight starts, how can we calm down sooner?  How to deal with when I just am doing nothing but tears start to fall uncontrollably. for example, over the weekend I saw protestors holding signs to support police officers and I felt this tingling sensation and an overwhelming of hotness and tears starting to form (is this “flooding”?) but I was able to hold them back by taking deep breaths and not focusing or looking at the people (I was in the car with my family). Any thoughts on this would be helpful. Thanks. When talking to a spouse about HSP, what do you think are the top 2-3 things to focus on in discussion?  I'd like to avoid making him feel like he needs to change. I think he is feeling criticized when I explain my needs. It's such a huge concept, being HSP, so I would love to know a couple of big things to focus on and a couple of big things to avoid (like common mistakes)? Hoping this makes sense. I just don't know where to start, but I think he is willing to listen.

The World Needs You to Thrive: Be Healthy, Balanced, and Productive with Julie and Willow

The World Needs You to Thrive: Be Healthy, Balanced, and Productive with Julie and Willow

HSPs have the capability of making a huge difference in the world. In fact, we need more HSPs to step into heart-centered leadership roles and makers of positive change.  Your heart and your gifts are needed. But if we don’t know how to take care of ourselves in the right ways we are doing a disservice to the world by not showing up thriving. Most of what we have been taught about self-care doesn’t work for us. Learning how to practice the right types of self-care and learn to take care of your sensitive nervous system is the key to thriving as an HSP and helping your gifts emerge to help the world. If a healer/leader/educator/parent is wilting and in survival mode, how much can they help another? HSPs need to do things differently. Getting it right, means you can have enough energy to take care of you, your family, your community, and even the world.

Self-care is NOT selfish.

NOT practicing the right type of self-care eventually hurts everyone.

Take turns at the front lines

Rest in between with self-compassion

Take control over what you can control

Understand what you cannot control

Slow down and listen internally the messages are there

Get inspired by others and learn tools

Be kind to yourself! Loving-kindness toward self is healing and gives you energy and vibrancy

When you are thriving you...

have more energy
use your gifts to contribute to the world
can be your best self
love life
follow your ambitions
understand, love & accept yourself
feel confident & secure
know your value
live in balance
have a positive, fulfilling life of joy authentically
