Jump CutMay 28, 2023

Episode 85: The Sorcerer's Apprentice - Slim Jim Brain
"My heart is not made of obsidian." We pull out a classic this episode with The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010), featuring Nicholas Cage, Secrets by OneRepublic, and a severe lack of melancholy. Tune in to find out who's wrong this week.

Episode 84: Warm Bodies - The Baby Announcement
"It's no Joker, but it's pretty good." Warm Bodies (2013) takes the stage this week on Jump Cut. In this episode, Leander discovers a love for libraries and comic books, while Hashem changes the Jump Cut movie-picking-meta.

Episode 83: Perfect Blue - I Think You Hate What I'm Saying
"We're better commentators than friends." This episode, we catch up! The itinerary for this episode includes a check in with the boys, followed by an engaging (and 'content warning'ed) discussion on Perfect Blue (1997), our guest's recommendation from last time. Catch the conversation on this light-hearted anime flick in this episode of Jump Cut.

Episode 82: Belle - An Idol Movie Review
"It's a song about the internet." "Did we both say a song?" Welcome to Jump Cut everyone, where today, we bring a resident Anime Expert TM to the scene! Joining us today is George, to talk about Belle (2021) and how it really is just Beauty and the Beast, but anime. We discuss anime tropes, what makes them cool, and how this movie makes the internet look the coolest.

Episode 81: The Intern - I Pick Movies All The Time
"I am an advocate of women's rights and women's wrongs." Anne Hathaway rises to power in The Intern (2015) and we get INTO it. If you're looking for a discussion on growing old and watching your friends die -- I mean, unexpected friendships later in life, this is the podcast to catch.

Episode 80: Jump Cut Review - Jordine's Day Off
"Hashem's in his Scorsese arc." This episode, we have some fun! Jordine joins the episode for a review and celebration of Jump Cut so far. She hosts her own talk show with Green Goblin and the Green Knight -- I mean Hashem and Leander, with some hard hitting questions about Jump Cut's humble beginnings, and quizzes them on their podcast and co-host knowledge. This episode was a great time so please enjoy (and play along if you want!).

Episode 79: Old Boy - A Jaw-Dropping Opening
"Nintendo isn't the government of Japan." We review another banger of a recommendation from Leander this week: Old Boy (2003). Before we get into the nitty-gritty of it though, we take some time away from our hard-hitting journalism to check in on what's been up in the boys' lives lately. Hashem gives a shout out to the gym rats out there and Leander rejects the title of 'tech bro'. In all seriousness, we have some really insightful discussions on the thesis statement of Old Boy, so pop a squat and have a listen.

Episode 78: About Time - It's a Movie
"The woke mind virus got to us." It's about time we got back to a regular posting schedule! Haha! This week, Hashem and Leander get into some seriously involved discussions about autonomy in time travel movies, the lost potential of this film, and their own ideas of how "About Time" (2013) could've easily been fixed.

Episode 77: In Bruges - It's Like Free XP
"That's so anime." This week we find out that everything is not what it seems. We watched In Bruges (2008). Hashem and Leander get into some absolutely artistic and scholarly discussion about the nuances of imprecise dialogue, religion's absolute ideals of morality, and even get a little meta talking about how movie ratings and reviews are formed. It's a wild one and the boys spit FIRE this episode, so don't miss out.

Episode 76: No Country for Old Men - Death and all his Friends
"Do you classify a genre by its style or substance?" Welcome back to Jump Cut, and boy do we have a banger this week! Today we're talking No Country for Old Men (2007) and how death exists in that movie. We ignore everything about the movie and focus on the philosophy, as real film bros do. Leander shows his true colors by simping for a sociopath. Tune in to see us slowly become a true crime podcast!

Episode 75: The Wonder - Religion, Here We Go
"The meat and potatoes of the stew are already there." Happy holidays everybody! We missed all of them during our accidental (second) break! This episode was recorded about a month ago and Hashem is still sick, so send cough syrup his way. In this episode, we go sicko mode (bless you) on The Wonder (2022) talking about our love for Florence Pugh, Leander's disdain for The Lighthouse, and Hashem's disdain for Leander. Happy new year.

Episode 74: The Muppet Movie - Fun for the Whole Family
"The Muppet Movie is probably one of the peak of recent cinema entertainment in the last 20 years." Welcome back to another episode where our hosts aren't sick! Today we talk some avant-garde cinema; The Muppet Movie (2011), and how it's the greatest comedies of our generation. Leander and Hashem discuss adult animation, why Big Mouth sucks now, the fall of the Simpsons, and why Futurama is the GOAT. Tune in with us, and don't forget the cough syrup!

Episode 73: The Lighthouse - A Movie with no Thesis Statement
"You and the homies, sitting around, talking about the Lighthouse, the gayest movie to ever exist." On this weeks episode, we get some real head butting, as Leander and Hashem talk The Lighthouse (2019), a movie about everything, and nothing. We go through what online reviews can do to a movie, does the movie even have meaning, or maybe, it's all us going insane on an island together. Does a movie really need a cohesive plot? Who knows, cause we sure don't!

Episode 72: Halloween Double Feature 2022 - I'd Spit In Their Drink
"There are parents, if you really wanna get your rocks off." For the third official Halloween Double Feature, we get some spooky picks in with Werewolf By Night (2022) and The Fear Street Trilogy (2021). In our jump-scariest episode yet, Hashem and Leander find a common ground in discussing how new media pays homage to the films that (some) horror fans hold so dearly today. Happy Halloween!

Episode 71: The Green Knight - Haley Joel Osment
"He's a right piece of shit." Hashem and Leander dive deep into their this fetch quest for the meaning behind The Green Knight (2021). They tried stringing along Hashem's dad and Jordine, but it didn't go very well, so it's now your job to come along for the ride and make up for it. The boys navigate the three-way venn diagram of "time passing", "death's inevitability", and "nature overcoming all". In the end, they realize that the real message was the friends they made along the way.

Episode 70: Paprika - I'm An American Now
"Goku's kamehameha doesn't look the same." Jump Cut is back for another anime movie. Pop in for our review and analysis of Paprika (2006). What is it, exactly, that ye olde anime could teach us today? The best use of your 24 frames per second? The superiority of subbed over dubbed? We take the time to learn some of those lessons while navigating through Leander's mind games. Our hosts are especially qualified to teach a crash course on animation, so take an hour-ish out of your day and join.

Episode 69: The Man from U.N.C.L.E - The Guys from J.U.M.P C.U.T
"He's the stereotypical Alpha." Slide into the world of spies with us as we review The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015). Our mission details include notes on Hugh Grant, Ed Helms, and where Leander's loyalties lie. That can't be good. All this and more on another episode of Jump Cut (sponsored by Blue Moon Paper).

Episode 68: Prey - Monsters in Period Pieces
"If it bleeds, we can kill it." This week, Leander (Predator) hunts down Hashem (Prey) for his dream of monster movie period pieces, while reviewing Prey (2022), not Predator (1987). We talk about why old action movies suck. And why new action movies suck. This movie doesn't suck. The Predator movies do suck. We also talk about Bullet Train as a little treat. Bullet Train doesn't suck.

Episode 67: RRR - How Dare You Have An Opinion
"It happened, I was there." Finally! What we call an "international movie" now spans beyond anime. This week, we talk about RRR (2022). Have a listen to this episode for discussions on broken water fountains, criticism of the British empire, and some hot (or not-so-hot) takes on Oklahoma! Yes, I do mean the Broadway show! It has nothing to do with the movie RRR!

Episode 66: The Little Prince - Paul Rudd Being Paul Rudd
"John in the corner, writing the Bible." Welcome back to Jump Cut (a week late), where we've finally gotten back to our regularly schedule programming with The Little Prince (2015). We talk about this ridiculously star studded cast, Hashem's appreciation of the french language, and Leander's limited ability for object permanence.

Episode 65: Ron's Gone Wrong - Red Scare Propaganda
"Where does he land on the political compass, that's what I wanna know about Barney." Hashem and Leander discuss the socioeconomic implications of the B-Bots in the textbook example film of capitalistic theory, Ron's Gone Wrong (2021). Recorded live in-studio for this episode, along with a special bonus discussion on Stranger Things season 4, and why nothing makes Hashem smile anymore.

Episode 64: Everything, Everywhere, All at Once - The Netflix Sausage Extruder
"Beat the dead horse until it's dead even more." We're staying on trend this week with a discussion on Everything, Everywhere, All At Once (2022) with every guest, everywhere, all at once! The boys bring Jordine and Noelle to share their thoughts on the film, as well as absurdism, optimistic nihilism, and the "throw googly eyes on it" philosophy. It's a four-person party this episode, so listen in on the FUN.

Episode 63: The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil - I Guess I'm A Beta
"I wanna see guys being bros, I wanna see boys being men." Hashem and Leander officially level up in this episode while discussing The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil (2019). They use their newfound knowledge to talk about the role of violence in storytelling, the west's expectations of foreign films, and the validity of the Jump Cut seal of approval.

Episode 62: Triangle - I Feel Persecuted Right Now
"I do not like looking at the fucking hallways!" In this episode of Jump Cut, Hashem is wrong loudly and Leander holds back tears while he defends a mild critique of Triangle (2009). Beginning to end this entire episode is a hand-to-hand fist fight, so grab some popcorn and place your bets on who throws who off a ladder in this podcast cage match.

Episode 61: The Nice Guys - My Bluetooth Player
"Fuck you. Fuck you fuck you fuck you." In this episode, we share our takes on 70s porn music, the role of kids as a moral compass, and some now-outdated Elon Musk news in this review of The Nice Guys (2016). Hell yeah!

Episode 60: Ghost in the Shell - Are Robots Lifeforms?
"Scarlet Johansson can play me in the remake." Welcome back to Jump Cut, and we're back to talking theory and philosophy! This week, we talk Ghost in the Shell (1995), and actively try to avoid talking about the live action remake. We get introspective, what makes a lifeform, and come to the conclusion that maybe nukes are bad? We also address how versatile Scarlet Johansson is as an actress, and what makes adaptations worthwhile!

Episode 59: Little Women - I Think You Hate Women
"Girls are impressed by the amount of games you play." "I don't care about kids being kids." "I have taxes to pay." 3 quotes here because this episode is a DOOZY. Hashem and Leander go head to head again, reviewing Little Women (2019). It's a fight for the ages! Spoiler alert: one of our co-hosts has prejudice against kids, women, and happiness. Listen to find out which one. Suspense!

Episode 58: Interstellar - Love in Space
"Yeah, this move is pretty good!" Welcome back everyone! Today we're reviewing Leander's (favourite?) movie pick, Interstellar (2014). We're finally bringing some polish to the podcast, and taking notes! And boy is this the movie to do it for. We talk propaganda, why the moon landing is fake, and what makes humans survive. Starting this episode, we'll be branching into psychology, and exploring what every character's motivations mean! And who best to do it than us at Jump Cut!

Episode 57: Knives Out - Who has done this?
"There has been a murda at the manor!" Here we are again, reviewing another good movie, Knives Out (2019). We're back into gamer talk, what is a whodunit, and why The Office season 1 won't age well (Sorry Leander). This episode marks our departure from adlibing, we're finally going to clean up our act! Expect more notes, more nuance, and more hot takes!

Episode 56: Birdman - Van Gogh Sucked
"I've never surfed before but it felt like surfing." The prequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming! Michael Keaton graces our screens as Birdman. Or anything but Birdman? But then again, Birdman. We also review The Batman. Jury's still out on if the boys are getting cancelled once again, but you'll have to listen and draw your own conclusions!

Episode 55: Night at the Museum - In The Land Before TIme
"This movie is not as good as Hocus Pocus." Editor Jordine is to thank for another banger pick: Night at the Museum (2006). In this episode, the boys follow the dinosaur footsteps into the museum of natural history. There, they discover a dislike for kids adventure movies, seek out a semblance of a plot, and travel through the space between Ricky Gervais' PG-13 and R-rated characters.

Episode 54: Spider-Man Saga Part 2 - Mean International Night-Monkey
"No Jump Cut until you eat your video games." Thwip! Thwip! We're back for part 2 of our Spider-Man Saga review. We got deep into the world of Marvel's Spider-Man movies (2017-2021), but not before spending 1/3 of this episode (and trust me, it's a long one) figuring out how to turn Jump Cut into a video game podcast. We're still determining when the re-brand will happen. Thwip thwip, see you next time!

Episode 53: Spider-Man Saga Part 1 - #NotMySpiderMan
"If you can't handle me at my worst, you don't deserve me at my best." The terrible trio is back! Leander (gaslight), Hashem (gatekeep), and Jordine (girlboss) are back in action, reviewing every live action Spider-Man movie at our disposal. Except we argued a lot while we did it, so this will be a two-parter. This first half includes Spider-Man 1-3, and The Amazing Spider-Man 1-2. Next episode, we'll finish off with the MCU Spider-Man movies. Hopefully our friendships are stronger than that of Harry Osborn and Peter Parker, and we'll be able to come back after this whole Spider-Man fiasco with our regularly scheduled programming.

Episode 52: Toy Story Saga - I Miss The Old Me
"It's just copaganda, that's all I'm saying." This week, we bring Leander into the zeitgeist and talk Toy Story 1-4 (1995-2019) among other Pixar movies. We outline the difference between family and kids movies, what makes Pixar so great (repeatability, baby), and consider checking ourselves into Leaguehab.

Episode 51: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - Touch Grass
"We're in season 2. Shit matters now." This week, a couple of sick boys review a Ben Stiller classic: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013). If you're in the market for some adventures and daydreams, this is the episode for you. Let your mind drift off into the sweet sound of hot takes, preachy messages, and forced romantic subplots.

Episode 50: Arcane - The Riot Cinematic Universe
"Why does it have to be the League show?." Please welcome special guest, Noelle, as we celebrate our 50th episode by not talking about a movie at all! Arcane was just too good. It got everybody to listen to Imagine Dragons again! Also, at the time of releasing this episode, Leander has completed his third rewatch of Arcane, and Hashem's roped all four of us {Leander, Hashem, guest Noelle, editor Jordine) into his new Discord server solely for playing League of Legends together. We are all officially...degenerates.

Episode 49: Whiplash - How To Find MissingNo

Episode 48: Police Story - Feed Me That Slop, Daddy Bezos
"They call me a musical omnivore." Welcome to Jump Cut! This week, we review the video game Metroid Dread, talk about Taylor Swift's new releases, and discuss Leander's taste in music. Oh wait, I'm getting a note from the higher ups. Oh right, we also talk about the Jackie Chan classic: Police Story (1985). Skip to 22:18 to get to the movie review.

Episode 47: The Matrix - Ready To Be Woke?
"Pepe doesn't have to be a white supremacist but now he is." Get ready to be blue pilled, baby! We also talk Celeste, Persona, and how all media is derivative. We get political this episode.

Episode 46: Halloween Double Feature 2021 - Leander Gets Cancelled
"I watched this movie with my cat." Happy Halloween to all you ghouls and gamers out there! This episode, we talk about pet role models. And nobody's a better role model than Thackery Binx from Hocus Pocus (1993). We get into discussions about sexual awakenings galore thanks to Sarah Jessica Parker, Sidney Prescott, and...Shaggy... once we move onto the next movie in our Halloween double feature, Scream (1996). Stay tuned to the end for a spooky story from our beloved co-host Hashem. Thanks for listening!

Episode 45: Treasure Planet - Bullying Nerds is Okay
"I didn't know I craved space pirate movies." We're on the hunt for Treasure Planet. Treasure Island? Treasure Planet (2002). We traverse through the vast sea of stars and discover that the treasure might have just been the friends we found along the way. I guess. We also come upon plans for a mutiny, track down the soundtrack for every edgy teen, and unearth a conversation about whether or not the One Piece is real.

Episode 44: Fargo - ASMR Special
"Should we be talking about our beneficiaries?" Turn up the volume for some mouth noises because we explore the world of ASMR in this episode's intro. After that, we discuss the movie Fargo (1996), look into the mannerisms of those from mini soda (yeah? Oh, yeah?), and get into our thoughts on Steve Buscemi's face.

Episode 43: Ocean's Eleven - Payoff In The Last 30 Minutes
"I think I'm a nitpicky bitch." This episode, we take you back to 2001, when George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon (Ben Affleck), and [REDACTED] teamed up for the heist of the decade in Ocean's Eleven. We talk about the Bechdel test, the modern lens, and eating as a character choice.

Episode 42: Space Jam: A New Legacy - Consumer Before Critic
"LeBron dropped the ball, which is funny because he plays basketball." We watch a fresh movie this week! Make sure to check out Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021) before walking into the Looneyverse, because it's...a lot. On your left, we're about to pass the White Walkers, so keep an eye out. Up ahead on the right, you'll see the Flintstones making their way to the big game. And towering above us right now is The Iron Giant! Watch out!

Episode 41: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - It's All About Ratios
This week, we watch Jordine's redemption pick: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).
