Chabad is a 'home away from home'
Chabad Cal Poly is a club on campus whose motto is to be a “Home away from home” for Jewish students on campus.
Rabbi Chaim Hillel started the club in 2009, with the purpose of creating a club that services students and the local community. Chabad Cal Poly puts on shabbat dinners, booths at the university union plaza, hosts barbeques and more.

'Her Campus' Promotes Cal Poly's Art Culture
On Saturday, March 5, Her Campus Cal Poly hosted their annual craft sale. The sale was from 12 to 3 PM in the backyard of a house on Hope Street.

A Glimpse into the REC's Early Morning Spin Class
At 6:45 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Cal Poly Recreation Center, studio one spin room, fills up with 34 eager students, staff, and locals ready for a ride. Barb LeMoine, the spin instructor for the Breakaway Spin class, finds her early morning classes so special.

CSA Lion Dance Club
The Cal Poly Chinese Student Association or CSA Lion Dance team has been one of the longest continuously student run organizations on campus, being active for over fifty years. LDT routinely performs for local schools, businesses, and events such as Illuminate dance and Culturefest.

Black Student Union hosts 'The Vibe' poetry slam
Cal Poly’s Black Student Union hosted their first annual “The Vibe” Open Mic and Poetry Slam on February 25th as a culmination of Black History Month. The BSU put on the event with the help of the Black Faculty and Staff Association, the Black Academic Excellence Center, and the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion.

On-campus Ice Cream Drive-Thru on Fridays
The Cal Poly Creamery is home to an ice cream drive-thru. Students and community members can stop by from 12-4 p.m. on Fridays to purchase a pint of ice cream, a scoop and/or cheese.

Women for Fisheries
Central Coast Women for Fisheries, or CCWF, is a non-profit organization in Morro Bay founded in 2006 by women within the commercial fishing industry, including female fishermen, boat captains, and the wives of fishermen.

'FAST" Jewelry Making Event
A Cal Poly club brought in local jewelry makers to help students learn this craft. This club, Fashion and Student Trends, known as FAST, held this jewelry making workshop on Feb. 22.

Frankie and Witch Fingers Concert
From the moment the music began blaring through the speakers, the crowd was radiating with energy at SLO Brew Rock on the night of February 5. Pancho and the Wizards, a local band from San Luis Obispo, was the first of three bands to take the stage for a show characterized by heavy, fast-paced and energized psych rock. The band began their first song, and the crowd moved away from the center of the floor, as it became the designated mosh pit.

Cal Poly Bowling Class
Mustang Lanes, located in the University Union, is the only bowling alley in the city of San Luis Obispo. It’s also home to a bowling class offered by the Kinesiology Department that Cal Poly students can take for one unit of course credit. Several sections of KINE 109 are offered each quarter and meet twice a week for fifty minutes at a time.

'Food for Thought' forum

New Tennis Pavilion
On Saturday, Feb. 18, Cal Poly announced the beginning of construction for the Comerford Tennis Pavilion at a groundbreaking event. The Comerford Tennis Pavilion is a new tennis complex with locker rooms for the athletes, outdoor seating for spectators, and a nutrition hub.

Mental health of engineering students
Mental health — it can be hard to maintain for many college students when dealing with a full-time schedule. Yet, it’s proving to be a silent, ever-growing issue, especially within one of the most rigorous programs at Cal Poly: the College of Engineering.

“We had auditions the very first week of school,” said psychology third-year Grace Schweitzer. “We had Tuesday night info meeting of the first week, Thursday night of the first week was auditions and starting that Monday, we started rehearsing.”

The rise of comedy in San Luis Obispo
San Luis Obispo is becoming a hub for standup comedians. With bigger name comedians such as Trevor Wallace and Bert Kreischer performing, as well as locals and students tapping in, the scene has taken off in the area.

SLO CAL Open happens in Pismo Beach
The World Surf League’s SLO CAL open returned to Pismo beach in January for a week-long competition open to the public. This was the first edition of this year’s SLO CAL open, with the second competition returning to Morro Bay from Feb. 23-26. Surfers from all around the world came to compete in the men and women’s junior and qualifying series categories.

39% of students are experiencing food insecurity
In 2022, 39% of the Cal Poly community experienced low or very low food security, according to data collected by the American College Health Association.

Cal Poly’s Greek honors society, Order of Omega, has started recruitment for the 2023 class. Order of Omega joins together members of all Greek life fraternity and sorority chapters at Cal Poly and works to build leadership, scholarship, and service among its members.
