We still face many of the same environmental issues as we did on that first Earth Day when founder, Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin Senator at the time, was inspired to make a difference after the devastation of the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, a beautiful coastal town here in Southern California not too far from where I grew up and where I now live.

As a Yoga Therapist and the founder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program, Anissa Hudak works with women who have been sexually traumatized to help them heal their PTSD and other trauma related issues with yoga therapy.
Yoga has been a meaningful part of my life throughout the years. I have personally experienced many benefits. Anissa's brand of yoga is unique and truly needed. She came to this work in a very personal way as a 2x rape survivor. I share my own personal story of trauma from being date raped that I've never shared publically. It was healing to tell Anissa my story and hear her feedback about how very common it is and how there are many different types of rape.

I thought it would be nice to end the year on a positive note, few things are more positive than gratitude so we're revisiting one of my most popular episodes. It's one of my favorites too because gratitude is a cornerstone of my well-being. It's the most significant thing that has helped me in my spiritual journey and personal development. As I relisten to it, I forgot about the interesting scientific-based research I uncovered! Scores of studies show a strong link between gratitude and your health and an increase in happiness. Although we don't need studies, we can feel it!
2021 was another challenging year for many but there are plenty of silver linings if you look for them. What we focus on expands. In this episode, I dive into some of the rather fascinating data and how you can easily reap the benefits and bring more of what you want into your life with a simple gratitude practice.

This is one of the most important and meaningful conversations that I've had on Clean Beauty Scene podcast. Black women and mothers experience health crises at rates 2 - 3 times that of other races. St. Louis based NBC-Health and Wellness Coach Marquita Ell, founder of Ell's Wellness, has been on a mission to heal since 2007. She was drawn to a deepened understanding of how family history and lifestyle choices impact overall health after her grandmother's death. In this episode, she shares helpful advice on how to prioritize managing your stress as it enhances every aspect of your health.
Marquita gives us powerful insights into how the race and gender-related complexities of Black womanhood are continuing to plague communities. We discuss the unique experiences of Black people and marginalized groups who are at a disadvantage within the healthcare system, the enormous problem of separation of culture and what we need to do to dismantle the systems. As Marquita explains, more people who are unaffected need to care enough to want change and take action.
The way Marquita explained how recognizing that it's about the system is seriously the most helpful and clear description that I have ever heard. When we don't take it personally or make it about us we can see the issue through a clear lens. Marquita's message really landed with me, I bet it will for you too.

This is an interview I have wanted to bring you for a long time. In August 2019 my best friend got the diagnosis every woman fears. Breast cancer. True to her character she handled her diagnosis and treatment with courage and took advocacy over her recovery. I’m happy to report that she is now cancer free and thriving.
Many of the things she learned during her journey including questions she wished she asked her doctors years prior to her diagnosis will shed light on subjects that are not commonly talked about when it comes to breast cancer prevention.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is obviously a good time to have this discussion but as I say every year, awareness is great but prevention is the key. What you'll learn by hearing Tresa's story is inspiring but will also help you when it comes to your own prevention. There are things to look out for and be aware of as well as surprising questions to consider asking your doctor during your yearly mammogram appointment. Tresa also sheds light on certain things your doctor likely doesn’t discuss with you about breast cancer prevention including whether or not you should have a breast ultrasound in addition to your yearly mammogram.

52. My Struggle With Postpartum Anxiety & Breastfeeding & How I Finally Got My Baby To Sleep Through The Night
Postpartum issues and breastfeeding difficulties are more common than you might think. Motherhood is the most precious blessing and privilege but being a new mom is more difficult than anyone can describe. It turns your world upside down... in wonderful ways but also presents challenges. I had an incredibly difficult breastfeeding experience and dealt with postpartum anxiety that shook me. The fourth trimester is real. In this episode, I share my very personal story. It's emotional reliving that time in my life. My boys are now 15 and 19. I'm going through a tough time really missing when they were little, if you have teenage or grown children I'm sure you can relate. I hope hearing my story helps someone. I also share how after a sleepless year I finally got my newborn sleeping through the night.

You are likely aware that certain chemicals used to manufacture various types of plastic are harmful for the environment and your health. They also mess with your metabolism. Even companies that don’t typically manufacture “green” products have been offering BPA and phthalate free items for some time but there are also other chemicals in plastics that are just as important to stay away from.

47. How To Choose Safe Sunscreen: What To Use & What To Avoid
I love the smell of Coppertone… brings back fond memories of my childhood. Oooh and baby oil… my girlfriends and I would slather that stuff all over our bodies in hopes of achieving that deep dark California tan. If we only knew! Not only were we damaging our skin but that pleasant smell of Coppertone is a highly toxic synthetic fragrance which is just one of the harmful ingredients you'll find in conventional sunscreen.
I'm often asked which clean sunscreen I recommend. Fortunately, there are several excellent nontoxic sunscreen options that work well without being a gooey mess or leaving a white film on your skin. This week I’m sharing my favorite brands including the sunscreen that my kids like.
You'll also hear which ingredients you do NOT want in your sunscreen. Even several mainstream western doctors now admit that the chemicals found in most brands are dangerous. They are also horrible for marine life. They are killing the coral reefs! When you choose clean sunscreen you take a step toward protecting your health and protecting the environment.

Most of us fear growing older and what it does to our health but it doesn't have to be something to fear. Your health and longevity is largely in your control. Your lifestyle dictates at least 75% of your health, looks and longevity. Five regions around the world, known as Blue Zones prove this. People living in Blue Zones are not only living to see their 100th birthday, but they are thriving in their twilight years. That's the objective - not just living a long life but feeling good and being happy while enjoying a beautiful quality of life. These areas have extremely low rates of heart disease, cancer, dementia, and other illness. In Costa Rica there lives a 107-year-old woman who cuts her grass-- using a machete!
It's more than diet and exercise, as I always preach, it's all about your lifestyle! On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans held demonstrations across the country rallying for a healthy, sustainable environment. We still face many of the same environmental issues as we did on that first Earth Day when founder, Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin Senator at the time, was inspired to make a difference after the devastation of the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, a beautiful coastal town here in Southern California not too far from where I grew up and where I now live.
Connect with your inner flower child and take action by implementing the tips that resonate with you. Every eco step you take is another step to a healthier environment. These tips also help your health immensely because many things we do for our planet also reduce your toxic load. The EPA ranks indoor air pollution as one of the top 5 environmental health risks.
