The Community Round Table--Monde Donaldson with the BBB helps you avoid scams & has IRS tips to choosing the best person/company to do your taxes
Vice President of Better Business Bureau Educational Foundation
www.bbb.org/article/news-releases/18436-top-tricks-used-to-scam-older-adults
No matter your age, no one is immune to scams. In the most recent 2020 BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report, romance scams continued to be the riskiest scams for ages 55 through 64, and travel/vacation/timeshare scams were again the riskiest for ages 65+. Regardless of the type of scam, BBB recommends the following precautions to avoid becoming a victim.
Tips to spot a potential scam
Watch out for phone fraud. The Federal Trade Commission reports that fraudulent telemarketers often direct their calls at older adults. Scammers will claim to be with a government agent or pose as an bank employee. They may sound friendly and courteous or aggressive and threatening. They may even have a caller ID to match their claims.
However, caller IDs can be easily spoofed and government agencies DON’T make unsolicited calls. It is vital to cultivate a healthy distrust for unsolicited callers and avoid sharing personal information. Never feel pressured to act. When in doubt, hang up the phone and call the official source to verify unexpected or unusual claims. You can also reduce the number of unsolicited calls by registering your phone number with the National Do-Not-Call registry at 1-888-382-1222 or Donotcall.gov.
Know the red flags. Most scammers use common tactics to get your money or personal information. Keep an eye out for the following too-good-to-be-true claims:
“Free,” “low cost,” or “buy one, get one” deal
Request for unusual payment types (i.e. prepaid debit cards or wired funds)
Claims that you only pay postage or administrative fees
Pressure to act now and/or aggressive tones
Deals that must be secured with a credit card or bank account information
Sure-fire investment opportunities
Charities that send 100% of your donation directly to the victims
Only hire trustworthy, licensed contractors.
Strange phone call? Might be an emergency scam:
Watch out for Medicare fraud:
Do your research before making an investment:Think before you click.
Be on guard for “sweetheart” swindles.
Reach out to someone you trust.
Take time to research your purchases.
Guard your personal information carefully. For More Information
www.bbb.org/article/news-releases/21492-bbb-tip-how-to-choose-a-tax-preparer-us
This year, United States taxpayers must file their income tax forms before the April 18, 2023 deadline. For many people, major life changes, business ownership, or simply a lack of knowledge about the ever-changing tax laws make finding a trustworthy tax preparer a good idea. That said, not all tax preparers have the same level of experience and training. Here are tips for finding someone you can trust with your finances and sensitive personal information.
Which type of tax preparer is right for you?
First, it’s important to understand the different types of tax preparers and their qualifications. Only enrolled agents, certified public accounts, and attorneys may represent their clients to the IRS on matters such as audits, collection issues, and appeals.
Enrolled Agent (EA):
Certified Public Accountants (CPA):
Attorneys:
Non-Credentialed tax preparers:
Most tax preparers are legitimate and competent, but keep in mind that without a national license requirement, they may be working off of their own personal research and experience. Because of this, it is important you conduct a thorough interview with the tax preparer before you hire them.
How to choose the right tax preparer:
When it comes to choosing the right kind of tax preparer for you personally, much will depend on the complexity of your tax situation. After you’ve decided what qualifications your tax preparer needs, the following tips will help you choose someone who is trustworthy and competent:
Review the tax preparer’s credentials.
Be wary of spectacular promises.

251 NOW with Kelly Finley--Picking the right pediatrician for your family! Meet Carey McDade Hancock, MD...
Victory Pediatrics
Dr. Carey McDade Hancock
Owner/Pediatrician
1. I am a local Mobilian who wanted to be an example to others. I was raised in a single family home and was the first of my family to attend college and professional school. My message to young people: Don’t let your circumstances dictate your future. You decide (with the help of God) your future.
2. Promote children’s health through a “VIP experience” (we have a stethoscope in our logo). No one likes to feel like just another number, especially when it comes to your children’s health and needs. You want to know that you’re receiving great care with a family vibe to the atmosphere.
3. Victory- refers to 1 Cor 15:57- But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. In everything, I’ve had to trust in God to lead me, guide me, teach me, comfort me, etc. He gave me victory, and I want to extend that victory to my patients and families in the way of delivering the best healthcare, that my patients and families feel victorious in their health.

The Community Round Table--Behind The Scenes with Darwin Singleton! We talk, we laugh, we reminisce about our time as co anchors and Darwin's radio/TV journey to Mobile & being Mr. Mardi Gras!
About Darwin Singleton:
2023 marks Darwin's 43rd year of either anchoring or reporting television news. Darwin now wakes up the Gulf Coast as co-anchor of NBC15 Today, teaming up with longtime friend and co-anchor Kelly Foster. Darwin will still offer up on-site reporting, as well as the occasional feature segment that has made him a fixture in the Mobile/Pensacola television community since 1987!
Darwin was born in Hazard, Kentucky in the Appalachian Mountains.
He worked in local radio in high school and community college before transferring to the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He then worked in radio in Lexington until 1980, switching to television news.
Darwin served as South Kentucky Bureau reporter and, later, police beat reporter for CBS affiliate WKYT-TV in Lexington. He became weekend anchor in his hometown of Hazard for the CBS affiliate WYMT-TV.
In 1987, tired of the snow and cold of winter, Darwin headed south to the Gulf, landing at the local CBS affiliate in Mobile. Late in 1999, Darwin accepted a position at WPMI NBC15 News as a feature reporter with his popular "Here's Darwin!" reports. In 2014 Darwin made the transition to the a.m. anchor desk, giving him another opportunity to communicate with his loyal viewers.
“When I first came to Mobile, my intention was to stay a couple of years and move on,” he says. “Well, that was 30 years ago! Mobile has shown me amazing support over the past three decades. And I’m proud to see how the city and region has progressed. We’re just now hitting our stride, and it’s a great time to be in Mobile!”
Darwin owns a century-old home in Midtown Mobile, in the city's Old Dauphin Way Historic District. He’s a huge support of Mobile’s vibrant downtown. And here at NBC15, Darwin’s passion for Carnival has earned him the nickname of Mobile's Mr. Mardi Gras!
Have a story you'd like to share with Darwin email him: dsingleton@mynbc15.com

The exhibition features thirty-five costumes worn by men and women and invites viewers to discover the turbulence of the Edwardian era and the cultural impact of the First World War. About the History Museum of Mobile:
The History Museum of Mobile is where Mobile’s story begins! Three sites - the History Museum of Mobile, Colonial Fort Condé, and the Phoenix Fire Museum - bring Mobile’s past to life for tens of thousands of visitors each year.
Start your visit at the History Museum of Mobile, where over 20,000 square feet of exhibit space interpret Mobile’s history from pre-Colonial contact to the modern Port City. Don’t miss the new children’s discovery room, where families can explore a French ship, play real African drums, try on colonial clothing, practice basket weaving, and more! Special exhibitions are always changing, so be sure to check the schedule. Your admission also covers Colonial Fort Condé, a partial reconstruction of the 1723 fort built when the French founded Mobile. And don’t miss the Phoenix Fire Museum, where horse-drawn steam engines and antique ladder trucks bring to life Mobile’s proud history of volunteer firefighting.
In March of 2020, the History Museum of Mobile announced a partnership with the Mobile County Commission, the City of Mobile, the Alabama Historical Commission, and community leaders in Africatown to create a landmark exhibition at the under-construction Africatown Heritage House. The nationally anticipated Clotilda: The Exhibition will tell the story of the people aboard the last slave ship to the United States. The pieces of the Clotilda that have been recovered from the shipwreck will be on display in the exhibition, on loan from the Alabama Historical Commission. The exhibition has been curated, developed, and designed in conjunction with the local community and the wider descendent community, and in consultation with experts around the country. When it opens, History Museum of Mobile will operate the Africatown Heritage House as a fourth site.
The History Museum of Mobile is the five-time recipient of the “Best Museum” Nappie, Mobile Bay’s people’s choice award. In 2021, the museum received two awards for innovative programming: the Main Street Mobile’s Chairman’s Certificate and Visit Mobile’s MOBie. The History Museum of Mobile is proud to co-host the 2024 American Association of State and Local History conference. 251 NOW with Kelly Finley--100 Things To Do In Mobile Before You Die
Author: Jodie Cain Smith
Mobile, Alabama, is proud to be the birthplace of Mardi Gras, but carnival season is just one reason Mobile is a destination city. And 100 Things to Do in Mobile Before You Die is your expert guide to getting around past the Battleship, the cannon, and all of the city’s unique landmarks.
Get tips on where to try the best seafood classics such as flaming oysters, fried crab claws, and West Indies Salad. Tap into an extensive park system offering playgrounds, splash pads, kayaking, fishing, and more, and an art scene to rival cities of any size. This “City of Six Flags” celebrates our diverse culture with historic neighborhoods, unique shopping, art galleries, museums, live music and theater, and one-of-a-kind sporting events—pole vaulting on Dauphin Street, anyone?
Written by a born-and-bred Mobile author and founder of the Mobile Literary Festival, 100 Things to Do in Mobile Before You Die is your guide to the best Mobile has to offer, from family fun at the Exploreum, to invigorating solo escapes on Mobile Bay, and everything in between. Strap on those walking shoes, grab a cold beverage, and devour every delectable morsel found in Mob-Town.
About the Author
Award-winning author and Mobile Literary Festival founder Jodie Cain Smith spent her childhood exploring the shores of Mobile Bay. She is a graduate of the University of South Alabama and Northern Michigan University because earning a degree on both the southern and northern border happened by chance and a bit of study. She is the author of two novels, The Woods at Barlow Bend and Bayou Cresting: The Wanting Women of Huet Pointe. Her short works have appeared in The Petigru Review, Pieces Anthology, and Chicken Soup for the Military Spouse's Soul. When not writing, Jodie hangs out with her long-suffering husband and the most precious little boy ever created. Seriously, the kid is amazing, and the husband puts up with a lot.
TALKING POINTS FROM THE BOOK:
Between the warm climate and wide range of activities, Mobile is a favorite of snow birds seeking sun-drenched recreation, water sports, diverse dining experiences, and relaxing landscapes.
Mobile is a seafood lover’s paradise. Not only can you find fabulous seafood restaurants and markets in nearly every part of Mobile, but the seafood caught, sold, and served here originated in the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta—America’s Amazon—as a major spawning area for several delectable species. You can’t get fresher than that.
Many seafood dishes were invented here. Fried blue crab claws (“Crab claws” to us locals) and West Indies Salad were created here. The Flaming Oysters at Bluegill on the Causeway is a Mobile original, and the absolute best way to enjoy oysters. Garlic butter and melted parmesan atop a flame-grilled oyster? Yes, please.
Mobile is for outdoorsy folks. Outdoor recreation is plentiful here. Bike trails, kayaking, disc golf, fishing, hiking, crabbing, and floundering are just a few of the outdoor activities Mobile has to offer. Add to that the beautiful park system Mobile has, and you’ll never want to spend a day indoors.
If you want to irritate any true-blue Mobilian, tell them the first Mardi Gras in the United States took place in New Orleans. It did not. Mobile is the birthplace of Mardi Gras. As Ginger Woechen’s gorgeous cruise terminal mural declares, we are born to celebrate.
We take our trees seriously here, specifically the live oaks. They are a city-wide treasure. We take comfort strolling beneath the canopies of oak branches found throughout midtown. We fight like the dickens if someone tries to remove one. We even name them. My favorite is the Duffie Oak on Caroline. Originally named the Seven Sisters for the seven long, thick branches reaching out in all directions, the Duffie Oak is the oldest living landmark in Mobile at over 700 years old, and it’s perfect for climbing.
Langan Park, formerly Municipal Park, is Mobile’s Centr

Mission:
The mission of this event is to raise as much money as we can each year that can be disbursed to
Local patients, while they are in treatment and funds are not available for personal needs. We
provide funds that are used for mortgage payments, rents, utilities, groceries, gas cards, co-
payments, insurance premiums, tests not covered by insurance, medications, genetics testing when
applicable and other various and sundry expenses that arise.
Goal:
Our goal is to create a family friendly event that the community can look forward to each year and feel
like they are making a difference here, in our neighborhoods. This
is a grassroots effort to put money into the hands and households of the actual patients who are
suffering and who need help on a very urgent and personal level.
*Shout out to our top SPONSORS!
They are the reason this mission is so successful each year, we are so very grateful to:
Hope Brown - Roberts Brothers, she has been a cheerleader for this mission since day one and is our
presenting sponsor this year!
Southern Cancer Center has supported this mission every year and we are very grateful for the work
they do.
Myriad has partnered with us several times over the years! They help provide genetics testing to
patients who are at risk.
Hologic has also partnered with us in our mission and they also provide testing to those who may be
at risk or carry the gene that causes breast cancer.
All In Credit Union contacted us and Torian Davis, their marketing manager, who, himself had a loved
one who beat breast cancer has been very supportive and pledged to be involved on a yearly basis
going forward.
