From walking is boring to walking is awesome
Walking doesn't have to be a chore.
Yes, it's 'good for you', and often suggested as a exercise to improve mental and physical health, and it's benefits are supported by research, especially in conjunction with medication and/or therapy.
But when something is good for you, it can become associated with guilt if you're not doing it.
I share with you one of the reasons why I appreciate the power of walking and one of the strategies I used, and still use to reinforce my daily walk habit.

Creating Connection through Speed Networking
Speed networking can sound scary. It's loud and quick and not for the fient hearted. To help you create connections that matter, here are some strategies to stand out and not get lost in the crowd. Here are a couple of quick take aways. 1. Check the font on your business cards, both the contrast and the font. Hint - give it to someone over 50 to read. 2. The people who stood out talked about the pleasure they find in being part of someone’s life and helping them within their speciality. 3. The importance of differentiating yourself when there are umpteen finance/mortgage brokers, or any multiple businesses. The people who stood out were able to articulate what they did differently, and what clients they particularly loved working with. 4. Ensure your name is on any information you give to others. 5. Take advantage of the opportunity to practice your elevator pitch over and over. You find out whether it sounds boring to your ears and because you talk to so many people you get to change it up as you go. I think I had it about right by the end. 6. The difference it makes when you tailor your pitch to the person in front of you (the hint that going second in the pairing helps you do this). I think this is what my pitch ended up sounding like at the end, note to self- next time take better notes! I’m passionate about reducing isolation and increasing connection. This is translated into supporting parents by working with them and their kids to help with anxiety, sleep problems, emotional and behavioural difficulties and school refusal. Also with parent education. And then in a non-clinical way helping mental health professionals reduce their isolation so they can keep doing great work to help others (or at least everything I said was some variation on that). This no mans land is valuable territory, where close attention can clarify what really matters to you, and what just isn't working at home and/or work. Paying attention is the key to the change you want to happen
Learning how to pay attention to your thoughts, feelings and experiences in a mindful way is the key to all the changes you wish to make.
Many of us engage in activities that take us away from paying attention or noticing.
Things like binge watching, gaming, reading, gambling, drinking, scrolling, eating.
Any behaviour that takes us away from what you are feeling, thinking, experiencing may be helpful or not.
There are two facts here:
• Increasing your awareness can be difficult and painful.
• Reducing your awareness can be isolating and life shrinking.
With the first one – it’s a caution that increased awareness needs to be monitored. So before diving into any mindfulness based program engage someone experienced who can act as a guide (like me ;) ).
For most people, it’s worth it, because among the downsides to NOT increasing awareness is numbness, disconnection, denial, and a small life.
To ease into it we're going to start with the practice of savouring. Choosing something you love and giving it your full attention. Have yourself a tiny little experience.
The first bite of something. Your morning coffee, A flower, the wind, a piece of music.
1. Do just this one thing.
2. Use your senses to fully experience this moment.
You can record it in a journal or keep it as a visual memory.
One reminder to engage in savouring, is if you feel the urge to take a take a photo of something, savour it first.

Why is it so hard to change my habits?
Why is it so hard to change my habits?
One of the main reasons it's so hard to change your habits is the amount of myths circulating about habit change.
The five myths this video busts about habit change are:
1. It takes 21 days to make a habit. Nope. It can take up to a year to create a new habit. Depends on the habit and on your individual circumstances
2. You are getting rid of your old habits. Nope You don’t get rid of old patterns of behaviour, they’re there under the surface. waiting to be reactivated, particularly when you are under stress. What you are doing is creating new habits, with different neural pathways. Over time they will strengthen and become your go to neural track - they will become a stronger habit and pattern of behaviour than your old one.
3. You just need more motivation. Nope. Motivation is not enough to sustain change. It can kickstart momentum and provide you with a part of your reason for change, but it's not the how.
4. Failing means you aren't capable of meeting the goal, or you are lacking in motivation. Nope Failure, or relapse is a normal part of the behaviour change cycle.
5. If you tell myself often enough that you can do it you will. Nope. Positive affirmations can do more harm than good. An affirmation is a statement of truth. If what you are saying out loud does not match how you think or feel about yourself, this can create increased inner turmoil and disconnection from your authentic self, making it harder to create and sustain a new healthy lifestyle.
So if motivation and giving yourself pep talks doesn't work, what does? Starting from a base of awareness and acceptance. Knowing where you are and what you are currently experiencing allows you to recenter, connect and keep going.

How to network when you are socially awkward
Did you know that you are part of a network, whether you want to be or not?
Yep, a network is a group of people who are connected to each other. Whether that be directly or indirectly. For example your closest friend is part of your network and so is there cousin who comes out with you from time to time.
Your teachers, your boss, your LinkedIn connections, the people in your team. Anyone you communicate with on a regular or irregular basis AND anyone they communicate with AND anyone they can communicate with.
Some people are close connections, and some more distant. And others in your network you can only access through someone else.
There are undoubtable benefits to having a good network. Including better mental health through increased connections. Also more job or referral opportunities, more opportunities for growth and protection against burnout. And conversely small networks can contribute to increased loneliness and isolation and insular perspectives.
But what if you’re socially awkward?

How your Mental health gets in the way of forming connections
Poor mental health, such as chronic anxiety and/or depression can grossly interfere with your ability to connect with and trust yourself, and connect with others. In this episode I touch on some signs that this might be happening to you. If you have been experiencing poor mental health for a long time, seek help sooner rather than later. Everyone's mental health journey is different. Some people experience brief period of poor mental health, for others it is a life time commitment to manage. How to control your work (over) load
Do you remember the rush of starting your first job, or a new job?
Excitement, nerves, anticipation, energy, enthusiasm. Wanting to do your best and make a good impression. Perhaps a bit of Imposter Syndrome standing beside you giving you encouraging words like – “Are you sure you’re up to it?”
You expect in those early times for the work to take longer, as you are on a learning curve. So working outside normal hours is OK because you are learning and it will get quicker and easier. Stepping in and covering when someone is sick to answer the phones or attend to reception is OK because you are part of a team now, and there’s no money to pay a casual receptionist. Skipping breaks to finish a report is OK because there’s a deadline and that’s important.
It’s so easy when you start something new, want to make a good impression, or are working extra hard due to Imposter Syndrome to say ‘that’s OK’ or YES – “I can do that”. Then all these OKs add up to work (over) load. You don't have enough time, you are doing too much, you are doing irrelevant work
Or, if you are a solo practitioner the process is similar, except in this case you are telling yourself it’s ok to work outside the hours you have set for yourself. And that it’s OK for you to do everything.
Until it's not.

Are you vulnerable to being bullied?
Hands up if you thought that becoming a mental health professional meant you were entering a field where mental health would be important. Where perhaps your workplace, professional organisations and peers would understand and facilitate environments where mental health was prioritised?
Me too.
I worked for many years in various Government departments before becoming a psychologist. There were definitely signs of nepotism and frustrations with the type of work and other work places stressors - which weren’t healthy, but personally I don’t think I experienced any bullying or vitriol. (a little bit of sexual harassment - but that’s another story).
And I certainly didn’t think that the Mental Health Industry would be worse!
One of the problems we have as psychologists is a lack of power and the shame and stigma of bullying. So, join me as we dive in to look at possible sources of bullying within the Mental Health Industry. -

How to make Imposter Syndrome your best business buddy.
I can almost guarantee if you are listening to this you have experienced Imposter Syndrome. When I first graduated I had this big time! And when I became a mother, and when I first went to Uni. It keeps popping up! It describes the feeling when you are in a situation where you are ‘expected’ to know things and to be able to perform at a particular level when you are not feeling ready for it.
It’s that voice that says - you are not good enough.
But with an attitude of openness and curiosity, your Imposter Syndrome can be your best business ally and help you prevent burnout.
Listen to what it is telling you and use that feedback to step into your doubt and fear in a productive and sustainable way.

This is a common talked about reason for hopping on to a social media platform - but lets expand that a little bit….. Other important intentional reasons for networking include:You want to learn from other people’s experiences and wisdom (paid/unpaid - coaching/mentoring/workshops). You want to meet people you can sell to You want to meet people who know people or work with people you can sell to You are looking for opportunities to collaborate, talk, podcast, event You have opportunities to collaborate, talk, podcast, event you would like to share with others You are lonely and want to meet people with like minded values and goals to share the ups and downs of your journey You love the process of connecting and hearing about others stories.
So decide which one of these will be your your MAIN focus. Decide on this before hopping on your social media networking platform.

2. Do I need to deepen and explore the connections I have. For example if you look at your existing social network are there people in there who could possibly fit one of these reasons you are hopping on social networks. If there are, is there a reason you are not exploring this connection further?

Simplify your online world in five steps
You know networking is important, and that connection is important to help avoid burnout and set yourself up for a successful and sustainable career. So you reach out and friend and follow others, and they reach out and follow you and before you know it you are connected to all these people you don't actually know. And you aren't connecting with the people you want to connect with. So what do you do? Here are five steps.
INTENT
Be very clear on your purpose for networking, then you can curate and grow your network intentionally.
AUDIT
Look at your list of contacts - LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram.
Do they fit into your reason/purpose for networking? Do these people fit your values? Do they engage in ethical behaviour? Do you trust them? Are they people you would (or think you would) enjoy having a cup of coffee with? Have you liked any dealings you have had with them in the past? Do you think they might be ‘using’ you? Do you feel energised when interacting with them?INTROSPECTION
Look at the quality of YOUR interactions with others.. If you don’t want to have someone as part of your network anymore - unfollow, change your notifications, leave groups, don’t react to anything they post - they will stop showing up in your feed. If they are toxic - then delete, unfriend etc.CONFIDENCE IN CONNECTION
If you do want them in your network, and, want to strengthen the connection look at what YOU can share/offer.
It can be a perspective, an insight, a question, an opinion, a challenge, a story/experience, gratitude, an idea, the ability to share someones ideas/work with someone else - to be a link in the network.
PLANNING AND PATIENCE
Look ahead. what would you love to be doing? Who would you love to work with? what area would you love to work in? (this calls for knowing yourself, your values, your goals - allowing yourself to dream and connect in with the authentic you_

How labels in the Mental Health Profession are an obstacle to connection, and what you can do about it
Whether you are a psych, psychiatrist, mental health nurse, mental health social worker, mental health OT, counsellor, or are working in a different capacity in the mental health field, we share something in common. An inbuilt desire to help others improve their mental health.
Not many people know how it feels to sit in acceptance with another human being. To encourage people to share with your their deepest thoughts, the ones that keep them up at night, that stop them forming relationships and loving others, from loving themselves.
And then through the deepest caring and understanding help them lead better, more fulfilling lives.
You and me, we are part of an exclusive club.
Now I don’t know about you but ever since I graduated I’ve had a love/hate relationship with my label. The result of which is division, judgement, ego driven decisions made by professional bodies; and as peers we get engaged in justification discussions, energy zapping (Maybe you’re noticing an internal dialogue about this with yourself as you are listening/reading).
Labels have their purpose but….
when we talk in the short hand of labels, there is the risk of losing the nuances and humanity and we top seeing each other as people first.
MY TIPS
Commit yourself to
seeing the MHP as a person first seeing their abilities understanding your abilities and speaking to those making referrals to the most appropriate MHP you know that can help with a presenting problem. noticing and compartmentalising the it’s not fair talk (like I needed/need to do)Some journal prompts / guiding questions
What skills do you need in your referral network.
What do I do well?
What do I need help with - who may be able to help me with this?
What next?
Declutter - ask yourself if groups you are in / connections you have are showing appropriate levels of acceptance and tolerance. How even a short Digital Detox can help you tap into what is important to you and clarify your needs.
When I started as a new solo private mental health practitioner – it was drilled into me that I had to be visible on social media. Maybe you’ve heard the same thing. However, what is the opportunity cost here?
To mark the start of the New Year I planned a 3 day digital detox. I was so excited and committed that I wrote up the 7 Step Digital Detox Program. The first step of which is to do some digital decluttering. Just like in real life, it didn't go perfectly....
This is what I journalled on the first day. “It’s 7.49. I’ve been up for about 60-90 minutes and I already feel like my left arms has been chopped off. I’m missing that thrill, excitement of being online, see what everyone is up to”. But then, as what tends to happen when you allow ourself (maybe even force yourself) to experience some quietness, other insights and clarification happen. "I am more than my productivity".

How do you connect with other mental health professionals? Five steps.
As a (solo private) mental health practitioner I know how easy it is to feel isolated. For many years I worked for a government organisation, and for better or worse, there was always someone you could have a quick chat with. It’s one of the reasons I worked for headspace for a while – so that I knew there would be people around I could touch base with.
This podcast shows you how you don’t need to work for an organisation to create your own connection network.
To develop a network of people you can trust, to prolong your career and avoid burnout, to stay in your lane and create your own splash, I recommend these five steps.
1. Listen to what YOU need for support, for your career (authenticity)
2. Think about the people you want to be supported by. Don’t be quick to jump into a connection, but listen to the tone. State clearly your opinion and see what happens.
3. The online world is quite small. Keep your eyes and ears open.
4. Own what you can provide/offer to a relationship. Be proud of your gifts and don’t be easily swayed by others.
5. Create and take advantages of opportunities.
In an ironic twist you may not have seen coming, I invite you to step away from social media and switch off to connect first with yourself.
If true connection is having someone who understands and gets the real you. You need to ensure you allow the real you to shine through.

How to create a journaling habit.
Have you ever felt lost?
Like me, have you felt that somewhere along the way you took a wrong turn, veered of the path, or just became bamboozled with what life threw at you?
It can feel like a battle to create your own space in a world that is often driven by consumerism, material success and 'progress'.

One way of reconnecting with your authentic self is through writing, or journaling. If you have never tried tapping into the thoughts and emotions inside you in this way, I encourage you to give it a go.

Creating Christmas Calm through managing expectations
What happens when you step back and simply observe all the expectations and it feels to have them? Look at them again. Where have they come from? Are they necessary, important, do they enhance Christmas time?
You can see the ‘shoulds’ and ‘have tos’ for what they really are; they aren’t rules by which you have to live by, they aren’t absolute truths, they are just thoughts your mind is holding on to. By seeing this you can you can choose to let go of expectations that have no meaning or satisfaction for you. And knowing this you can choose.
Making your own choices
You can choose to participate in activities leading up to Christmas that you value. That bring joy to your heart and that of your family. You can choose activities that focus on kindness, gratitude, togetherness. You don’t need to be religious to tap into the good will that exists at this time of the year, where most people are actually actively trying to make other people happy.
There is a lot of freedom that comes with being an adult and having so many choices to make. We might feel the heavy weight of expectations, but when we lose that weight it is not just freeing, it also exposes us and makes it vulnerable. I think that is one reason why treading your own path at Christmas, in line with your values and not others expectations, is so difficult, but for you, it might be the path to your Christmas calm, connection and confidence.

Why you need to get rid of your books
Each year leading up to Christmas when we ask ourselves what we want for Christmas, I find this an inspiring time to actually look at what I have. We know that if you are looking to increase the happiness in your life that putting time and energy into experiences rather than things is the way to go.
However, things have a way of accumulating. Whether you have bought them with good intentions or whether they have come to you as gifts or through other means. And before you know it even things you love can just become part of ‘stuff everywhere’!
Curating your stuff can be a great way of reconnecting with what is important to you and creating an uplifting environment.
Let’s start by looking at books.
Growing up we had a set of World Book encyclopedias. I loved them. You could open up at any page and learn something new about the world. Looking at them gave me a sense of wonder and thirst for knowledge. I probably loved my fantasy books (Enid Blyton anyone?) where I went into worlds where anything and everything was possible.
It’s the promise contained in books that I love.
As I grew older my relationship with books became a bit more complicated. Books I had to read – school novels, reference books. Books I thought I should read – parenting books, self-help books. And instead of being always about pleasure books also became a mirror reminding me of things I didn’t understand, couldn’t learn or highlighted my inadequacies.
Do you love all your books? Do you smile when you see them, refer to them regularly and rejoice in their wisdom?
OR
Are their books on your bookshelf that taunt you with reminders about your failures? Cookbooks full of recipes you haven’t tried. Self-help books with exercises you haven’t completed. Novels you haven’t read. Parenting books that seem to mock you. Reference books you don’t use (or are way out of date).

Connect with your calm through a guided visualisation (for kids and adults).

Time for Back to Basics
This week I've been exploring back to basic principles of self-care
One of the things COVID-19 has done is strip us of our regular structure, and therefore our cues for eating and exercising.
We are at home nearly all the time, we have food around us constantly, there is very little incidental exercise able to happen, which means everything we do must be done with full intent or awareness.
And as we are living in a state of fairly constant stress and anxiety, actually doing the basics is harder than what it seems.
So, what does back to basics mean?
FOOD: First is back to basics food. Increasing whole foods like brown rice oats anything that grows on a tree or in the ground i.e. fruit and vegetables. Drinking water.
MOVEMENT: Then it’s back to basics movement. Walking a couple of times a day, standing instead of sitting, stretching,.
HABITS: Back to basics eating habits. This includes sitting down to eat, sitting at the table to eat, using crockery and cutlery, tuning in to hungry cues.
Below are 11 principles to keep in mind in your back to basics journey.
1. Acceptance. My jeans won’t fit, my back aches, I’m not walking as much as I used to, I feel sluggish.
2. Accountability. Stating to yourself, or publicly what you are working on and would like to do.
3. Support - having someone taking the journey with you.
4. Cuing our behaviour. When I sit down in front of the tv – that is my cue to pick up my crotcheting (not sit and eat pistacchios)
5. Using the ‘When I do this, then I will do that’ strategy. Eg. When I drink this hot water, then I will have my coffee.
6. Doing things mindfully. Sitting at the table to eat.
7. Being prepared. Ending the day with a clean kitchen bench.
8. Mindset. Use simple words – Today I’m going to try to…..
9. Self-compassion. This is not a place for perfection or comparison this is a place of self compassion. We will be doing the best we can with what’s been going on.
10. Goal setting. Little baby goals. And goals that encourage you to do something rather than not do something. Today I’m going to drink one cup of hot water. I’m going to eat one vegetable. Start, not stop goals.
11. Boundaries. Put your little fences in place to keep the cows out.
This is particularly important if you’re living without the people who are questioning what you’re doing. This back to basics is for you and you decide where you put your boundary fence. I am cooking one meal tonight and this is what I want to cook and eat. Or I’m not buying any more junk food come into the house.

Why Covid-19 is causing you anxiety, and what to do about it.
Some initial research into the first month of COVID-19 found mental health difficulties were at least twice as prevalent as in non-pandemic circumstances.
For some people the restrictions around COVID-19 are a blip in their lives, for others the impact is significant and ongoing. And, as to be expected, the people most impacted are the most vulnerable in society.
The need for practical, positive, flexible self-care to manage this ongoing anxiety and stress is clear.

How to move from judgement to acceptance in three steps.

Are scattered self-care options working for you? 5 questions you can ask yourself to create intentional self-care
In the rush to support each other with recommending self-care strategies, it can lead to a scattergun approach.
What you may find more helpful is an intentional self-care approach.
Practicing tuning in and checking in with yourself is at the centre of an intentional self-care approach.
Self-care is about taking responsibility for your mental and physical health. Your self-care needs will vary depending on your life stage; your family and personal demands; your physical and mental health; and other factors unique to you. And is best not left to chance.
Creating structure around immediate, short-medium term and long-term health is important.
My Intentional Self-Care Program is divided into 5 modules: Physical, Emotional, Cognitive, Meaning and Connection.
In this episode I take you through 5 questions you can use in your daily check in that will help you identify what self-care strategies are the best for you today.

Are you expecting too much of yourself?
As a mother you carry around a bundle of expectations in a 'normal' life. Today I revisited my resource on taking the first step from overwhelm to calm to assess it's value for right now. I found that it basically all still applies. There are a few more expectations added on, and some losses to examine. I have therefore added a new journal prompt to look at the losses.
When you take the time to examine the usefulness of the expectations you carry, you are looking after your cognitive self-care. Cognitive self-care is one of the give areas of self-care addressed in Your Roadmap to Personal Wellbeing Program for no BS* Mums. The other four being Physical Self-Care, Emotional Wellbeing, Connection and Meaning.

5 ways to improve connection with your daughter.
If you have a daughter and want to help strengthen your bond with her, reduce her sense of isolation and help protect her mental health, here are five ways that can help.
Flexibility - of ways to communicate, when and where to communicate. Be open to situations that arise.
Time - take the time to be there, to tell them you love them, to look them in the eye when they are coming and going.
Acceptance - let go of your expectations and work with what is.
Curiosity - cultivate curiosity and wonder. Allow the space to watch them develop and grow.
Forgiveness - of them and of yourself for what was done and not done. Start each day anew.

Moving from vulnerability back to self-trust
Trusting people with your authentic self, starts with knowing and accepting your inner self. When you face situations that lead to self-doubt it can be easy to lose sight of who you truely are. In this episode I talk a bit about what it was like for me to recover from one of the (many) vulnerabilities I faced. Are the 'shoulds' ruling your life?
How many times a day do you hear this word come out of your mouth? I ‘should’ go to the gym, I ‘should’ got for a walk, I ‘should’ call my friend, I ‘should’ clean the house, I ‘should’ do the grocery shopping, I ‘should’ stay back at work and finish that report, I ‘cant’ go out I have too much to do, ‘I shouldn’t feel like this. The list goes on.
So, what’s wrong with saying ‘should’. I’ll give you a hint.
How do you feel when you say ‘should’?
If you’re like most people it probably creates a heavy feeling. It’s a burden, a chore, another expectation, something else to add to you to do list. It can create guilt and shame. The more you use these rigid words the more disappointed, angry, depressed or guilty you are likely to feel.

Step back and get a different perspective
It's easy to get caught up in the little details of our life and not see the whole picture. If you want a practical example of perspective, do a jigsaw puzzle, (or even a wasgij puzzle for an extra challenge). Notice what happens when you stop doing the puzzle and take a break - you will often find things are clearer when you go back to it. Or ever had someone come along and know straight way where a piece can go that you've been trying to fit somewhere for ages? That's the difference perspective can make!
Using perspective is part of cognitive self-care, and like connectedness, cognitive self-care is one of the key pillars to your wellbeing. Perspective allows you to see what is going on in your life with clarity - what are you really thinking and feeling? What truly matters? How can you be seen, heard and valued?

How to superboost your self care.
Self-care is looking after your mental and physical health. How can you make the most of the time you set aside for self-care?
Recently I attended a clay workshop - which ticked not just the connection box, but other self-care boxes. The following are some of the boxes it ticked.
Connection ticks
1. I met new people - connecting with peers
2. I met I knew from online and had never met before - strengthening online connections
3. I worked with clay - connecting with nature.
4. strengthened my connection with my profession - as it was a professional workshop
Cognitive mental health ticks
1. I learnt something new
2. I stepped out of my comfort zone in terms of driving to a different location and cohosting a new workshop
Meaning mental health tick
1. Being involved in an activity that helped bring people together
Physical mental health tick
1. Using my body (through the medium of clay) to relax

It's Ok if your Mother's Group doesn't work out. Day 11/90
Were you in a Mother's Group? How did it go? Maybe like some people you're still friends with those mum's 5, 10 or 20+ years out. Or maybe you're like me and just never felt like you belonged.
When you're sleep deprived, don't know what you're really doing, suffering post natal depression, maybe your child isn't doing what all the other babies are doing, it can be really hard to feel like you belong. It's not always enough to bond over the shared difficulties of having a new baby. There are so many differences - your relationship with your spouse, family traditions, personalities and values.
And sometimes those differences mean this belonging, it just isn't going to come, and that's OK.
Keep looking for another group - for me I found it in the Australian Breastfeeding Association. Because there philosophy matched with some of key values.
And don't forget this was all before social media, so it was much harder to find niche groups.
Belonging is a journey, it can take a lot of twists and turns to find your home.
