Finding softness during times of stress
When short-term stressors become long-term stressors our brains and bodies go into a chronic state of sympathetic nervous system activation also known as fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. This becomes our new homeostasis and getting out of this can become quite uncomfortable because this state becomes so familiar and almost comfortable for many of us. Sometimes we may not even realize it because it has become our normal.

Stress is a normal human reaction that happens to everyone. Without it, we ultimately would not be able to survive in our environment. It allows us to detect danger and perform the appropriate response to save ourselves. But what happens when it goes too long? Our evolutionary adaptation has not caught up to the stressors of modern civilization. This can have a profound effect on us physically and mentally.

Say no to the "self-help" movement
New year, new beginnings, new health goals, new resolutions...no thank-you!
Dr. Rachelle and I decided to start 2022, stirring things up a little. How can two people who have literally dedicated a combined 30 years to "natural health" not believe in self-help?
It's pretty simple because we have seen it all. What starts as a big goal for improvement typically ends with feelings of failure. The message that if we "just do these 5 things," we will achieve (fill in the blank) is not only BS but harmful. It allows for no room for pauses, setbacks, reality checks, shifting values...basically the growth of any sort.
Many times the actual "failure" or loss of motivation in these plans is the precious gift of all. If we are not mired in guilt, shame and disappointment, we can begin to align ourselves with our true heart desires that revealed themselves from the failure. We can build an individualized, accessible plan to get us there.
Don't get us wrong, the evolution of self is a beautiful thing to strive for. When approached with the truth it comes with ease, struggle, challenges, and wins. What it does not include is: a 5 step one size fit all approach.

Food freedom over the holidays
I love fruit cake, and I wait all year for it to come back on the shelves.
But wait a second, isn't it filled with sugar, fat, carbs, and a million calories per slice? You bet it is, and I enjoy every bite of it.
As Naturopathic doctors, @drviinberg and I believe in the power of healthy eating AND the importance of pleasure, connection, and joy that food can bring.
This episode discusses the delicate balance we take on when advocating healthy food choices AND avoiding diet flare-ups for the patients we treat.

Meet Elisa Kurylowicz: A beautiful fall from greatness and the rise to self-love

Elisa Kurylowicz is a former member of the Canadian Freestyle Ski Team. She is 2 x National Champion in Moguls, a World Cup Gold medalist and was ranked in the Grand Prix Top 5 in the world 3 years in a row. After missing the Olympic Games in 2006, Elisa fell into a deep depression. She quit skiing, gained 85lbs in 1 year, abused her body and mind, was in an abusive relationship and was over $30,000 in debt. She then hit rock bottom in 2010 where she sat for over a year.
Then one day, she woke up and realized that she had a choice in life. From that day forward, she shifted her perspective on the world and began her journey to self-love and self-appreciation. She has made it her mission to help others find this within themselves.

Part six: Mindset matters

If you have not listened to any of this series yet, my recommendation is you start here! In this sixth and final episode, I discuss why mindset is the most important aspect of how you show up for yourself and others during this time of crisis.
I explain how the pandemic with it's a global and personal impact requires a similar process to that of any other grieving experience. I emphasize the need to ask for and give yourself permission to receive any and all the support you need.
I check in to ensure that your internal dialogue has not translated into a message that you are not doing enough, behaving wrong and/or should be having a different experience than you are. I ask that you accept yourself and others as an act of love.
I call on the two big mindset anchors of intention and compassion as tools to assist you as you navigate your thoughts, feelings and choices
And finally, my biggest message is that you have my support, love and care. Please do not do this alone!
Part five: Move your body

Let's get physical, physical, I want to get physical, let's get into physical... Okay, all cheese aside, in episode five, I discuss why daily movement is a non-negotiable requirement during this time.
Now that we are well into week five, most of us have and/or are feeling a lot of anxiety, depression, sleep disruption, body tension, aches and pains. I explain why this is the natural physical reaction when faced with high levels of prolonged stress combined with a more sedentary lifestyle.
I share with you the natural remedy to these symptoms and offer advice around how to implement more movement into your life during the pandemic.
I inspire and motivate you to find ways to increase your physical activity that will ultimately provide you with the much-needed benefits we are all craving right now.
Part four: Nutrition choices

Anyone else giving themselves a free pass for more donuts, wine, coffee and chips? I know I have been! I also understand that it is time to shift away from these patterns and turn towards true self-care. In part four of this series, I help you identify how your choices around food may be reflective of how you are processing (or not) the impact the pandemic is having on your life. I get firm (with love) about how using food to avoid, distract and escape from having to feel and deal with the realities of this situation will only cause further suffering. I ask you to move from dissociated eating and create space for mindful nourishment that brings with it aspects of pleasure, joy and connection through food. I leave you with a simple yet highly effective plan that uses mealtime as anchors to create a positive rippling effect with all the choices we make throughout the day.
Part three: Managing Stress

In episode 3 of this series, I tackle how our stress reaction is inevitably influencing the lifestyle choices we are making at this time. I explain the typical pattern of the nervous system when faced with fear and help identify if you are experiencing fight, flight or freeze tendencies.

l share my belief that setbacks in treatment are normal and to be expected. The big work is when we address the behaviour, learn from the experience and make different choices from this newfound wisdom. The true failure is if you give up, throw in the towel and never try again.

Q: Why is my PMS getting worse with age?
This episode is dedicated to the 35+-year-old women who are suffering from increased breast tenderness, significant mood changes, constant bloating, random hot flashes and so much more.
Girlfriends, this is called perimenopause. It is a stage of life and a normal biological ageing process, yet many of us experience such significant symptoms that our quality of life has been impacted, nothing about it feels normal!
As we age, our body starts to realize that the egg supply is getting lower. The response is an increase in estrogen to mature those remaining follicles before we hit menopause. In essence, we become estrogen dominant and for many, the body responds with all those yucky prepubescent symptoms, especially worse during the PMS window. The body is trying to cope with a new hormonal environment where the estrogen is higher and those worsening symptoms tell me that the body is not able to adapt to the changes.
In this episode, I discuss the possible reasons this may be happening and offer up some simple and highly effective lifestyle changes to stay ahead of these disruptive hormones.

On mindset: being in the middle
Does this sound like you?
You are starting something new perhaps a course, job change or fitness program. You are excited, highly motivated and focused. It is very easy to do what needs to be done. Life is a little brighter and the days move with certain ease with this newfound purpose.
Then at some point in the process, it starts to get harder and less exciting. The days feel like a grind and the motivation much harder.
You start to question your why and feel overwhelmed with the work required to keep going. This is because being in between the start and completion of a goal is difficult and boring. We often sabotage, abandon or shift focus losing all the beautiful gifts and lessons that are part of the journey.
In this episode, I shed light on this normal tendency and offer a teaching to sit with this discomfort and allow the process to unfold without expectations.
On mindset: what's your true intention?
What motivates you to start a new goal or make changes in your life? So often we take on something new and big before ever questioning why or what are deeper motives are.
Most of us have a misguided belief that once we get the body, the recognition, the money (fill in the blank) we will be accepted and finally find peace and freedom. We subconsciously set our goals based on old wounds that ultimately create more suffering instead of healing.

The opposite is true when we have misaligned values, our days will be filled with a series of choices that are based on the things we should do or things that we have deemed important because of external influences. It is very difficult to sustain behaviour when it is based on external instead of internal choice.

I can't tell you the number of people I see in practice who think having multiple loose and messy stools per day or going to the bathroom once a week is absolutely normal. It is not normal, in fact, it is unhealthy and a message that there are imbalances in your body.

Okay, we all get it. Exercise is good for us.
If we know this then why don’t we access it as part of our self-care routine especially when we are feeling blue?
Of course, we don’t! Because we are tired and down and going to the gym or out for a run is the last thing we want to do. Hence this vicious cycle, of needing to move our body but not being able to jump over these feelings (both mental and physical) to get the job done. We choose the donut instead of the yoga class that gives us short term relief but ultimately just perpetuates the negative state.

In this episode, I share my story about what used to motivate me to exercise and how my relationship with movement has dramatically shifted since challenging unhealthy belief systems.

I challenge you to let go of the "shoulds" and underlying negative thoughts so that you can set your intentions for movement based on your heart’s desire. I ask you to choose to exercise from a place of worthiness and full acceptance so that you can fully experience the joy and self-care that comes from movement.

But wait...before you skip this episode let me share with you that smoothies literally changed my nutrition game and therefore deserve this amount of air time.
I want to eat nourishing foods but spending hours preparing is not a value for me. I am more of a fly by the seat of your pants kind of gal when it comes to our meals. That being said, I do aim to eat well and with equal ratios of protein, fat, carbs and lots of fruits and veggies.
One thing that has been a huge lifesaver for me (and my family) is our daily smoothies. They are nutritionally dense, super tasty, kid-friendly and the best part… effortlessly easy.

On nutrition: better than choice
In this episode, I ask you to create more space around your expectations for nutrition.
So many people think that the only way to eat well is to come up with perfect meal plans and spend hours on the weekend meal prepping. Unless you actually love to do this, I argue that you give yourself a break and stop expecting this from yourself.
Any lifestyle choice that comes from a place of "should" lacks sustainability and ultimately results in resentment, boredom and follow through. We end up with "all or nothing" syndrome, if we can't do it all then we do nothing. Hence the vicious cycle of eating well and then not.
I offer the "better than choice" nutrition philosophy that gives you health without all that extra pressure. With this approach, you learn to trust your body and yourself to eat well in any given situation. You are free to spend your time doing the things you love while also enjoying the benefits of healthy food choices.

On nutrition: why I always have chips in the house
Is your strategy to eat healthy based on avoidance of "bad" foods? Do you keep "junk" foods out of the house as a way to eat better?
If yes, you are giving food way to much power and I don't think this is your best approach to eating well. Cravings just don't go away because the food is not around. In fact, often this denial has us wanting more and the avoidance ultimately results in binging on these forbidden foods.
In this episode, I argue that having junk food in the house is positive and necessary for the following reasons:
a) you can satiate the craving with what you really want, therefore letting it go
b) you can eat it in moderation knowing it is their tomorrow
c) you can get curious about if you even want or like it
d) it teaches our children to regulate food

After close to 2 decades supporting people as both a nutritionist and naturopathic doctor what I know to be true is that there is nothing sexy, edgy or trendy when it comes to healthy eating.

On stress: when good enough is enough
Why are we so hard on ourselves? If you know the answer to this question, please do share. I struggle with this in my own life and see the theme of "not enough" show up time and time again in patient care.
Dear ones, sometimes you are not supposed to feel great, vital or relaxed. There are seasons in our lives when feeling shitting is exactly what one would expect given everything that is going on. So why do we continue to judge and shame ourselves because we are not doing enough?
In this episode, I ask you to set realistic goals that are supportive and attainable given the situation you are in. I invite you to challenge all or nothing thinking especially during particularly stressful times so that you can find the room to make choices that may not be perfect or even ideal but are still benefiting you in small ways.

I just really, really want you to feel the difference getting out of bed earlier makes to your morning routine and ultimately less stress you feel throughout the whole day. I offer suggestions, resources and do a little hand waving (although you can't see that) to get you to embrace the benefits of this simple (not easy) daily habit.
I also discuss how getting in tune with your own personal values can have a huge impact on the stress you feel in your life. Let's face it there are a lot of things that we have to do: going to the dentist, getting a mammogram, attending work meetings.... but there may be some things that you can let go of. I share an example in my life and get super real around my own judgements and pressures and how I challenged these beliefs to create space for the things that bring me more joy!
On stress: don't tell me to relax
In this episode, I will affirm that what you are experiencing is indeed a maladaptive stress response and despite not having a medical diagnosis is a real syndrome that can impact all aspects of your health.
I will also share with you my experience when the volume on my nervous system is stuck at high and how telling me to relax or breath in this state is the worse possible advice you can give me!
