Labeled: The Stories, Rumors & Legends of Tooth & Nail RecordsJan 24, 2019

Garrett Russell - Silent Planet
Garrett Russell of Silent Planet joins us today to tell the story of their terrible Wyoming van accident, how it has impacted his thinking and and how his spiritual beliefs have continued to change and evolve. All leading to the development of their new album SUPERBLOOM which releases November 3. Several tracks are out already and becoming some of their biggest songs to date. We also discuss the nature of being a heavy band in its 2nd decade.

Chris Conley - Saves The Day
Chris Conley is nothing if not original. His ability and willingness to listen to and follow an inner voice led him to an early arrival into the all-ages music scene with great influence. Saves The Day continued to evolve musically and did not get stuck in a certain sound even though commercial success would have wanted just that. After helping set the tone for the scene and being signed to a major label (Dreamworks), Saves The Day delivered their album, In Reverie, which was another evolution of direction & departure from what the radio or even their fans were expecting. This lead to them being quickly abandoned by the label. Nonetheless, it’s Chris’ and my favorite album of theirs. We discuss this and much more including some close ties to my band, so please enjoy this conversation with Chris Conley.

Shane Told - Silverstein
Silverstein is in the club of bands that are true workhorses - continuously active year after year while racking up new achievements. They seem to benefit greatly from being able to self-manage, adapt, engage in long range decision making, while always trying new things. They have played over 2500 shows and have over a million monthly listeners on Spotify.
In this conversation with lead singer Shane Told, we cover the Canadian local scene that they come from, getting on and off Victory Records, and many other reflections from the last 20 years. Shane also has a great podcast of his own, Lead Singer Syndrome, so check that out too.

Chad Gardner - Kings Kaleidoscope
Today we have a convo with Chad Gardner of Kings Kaleidoscope. What's most intriguing about Chad is that he is an incredibly efficient, high-level, high-energy problem solver. He fits a pattern that we see over and over again in this world of kids who come from families with engineering and technical talent and use this to power high level creativity and art. chad's ability to lead creative teams and react and improvise is what leads to the aesthetic and musical excellence that Kings Kaleidoscope is known for.
They are also known for having a rebellious spirit from within the Christian music and worship worlds, pushing boundaries, and an extremely DIY approach to everything.
They have a new self-titled album out today, go listen on Spotify, and also a full US tour starting this week, go to https://kampkaleidoscope.com/ to find your city and get tickets.

Reese Roper - Five Iron Frenzy
Reese Roper is simply a legend. Five Iron Frenzy (FIF) was one of the first Christian bands truly existing in both the Christian and mainstream space. In the late 90s during the ska explosion, they achieved real commercial success, made a bold choice to stay on a small independent label, and were delivering absolutely scorching lyrics that were full of questions and critique - lyrics that challenged the existing cultural structures. Packaging those lyrics in the ska-punk package was a perfect move that paid off deeply to their fan base. FIF is also one of those bands that pioneered and cultivated their followers into super fans by delivering on multiple layers of depth across time and staying true to their principles. They are heroes of the scene and certainly paved the way for the next generation.
They are now releasing an incredibly cool vinyl box set of all their music. You gotta check it out and the promotional video for it. I’ll link it in the notes because it delivers the perfect amount of silliness and humor that you’d expect from FIF. I thought this would be a great chance to talk to Reese and get his reflections on some of the special things they have accomplished plus some of the challenges.
Link to the FIF boxset promotional video

JT Woodruff- Hawthorne Heights
JT Woodruff is one of the most intentional and efficient leaders and operators in the history of the scene. His band Hawthorne Heights has had absolutely huge ups and downs. Ups like their first 2 records going gold and creating one of the most iconic emo songs ever, Ohio Is For Lovers, which has almost 100 million Spotify plays. The downs include a lengthy, costly lawsuit with their label as well as the death of a best friend and bandmate, Casey Calvert, in 2007.
Hawthorne Heights has handled their career incredibly well, racking up over 20 years of successful continuous activity while continuing to innovate, adapt, and grow as people and as a band. JT is one of the most principled people i know, and his values and principles have guided him well across the spectrum from the smallest details of being punk and DIY to large scale business moves like creating the ...Is For Lovers Festival which is becoming wildly successful.

Mayday Parade - Derek Sanders
Mayday Parade is an incredibly well-balanced group of guys. Balanced in a way that equates to functioning well as a healthy team in a high output, low drama, great to be around way. Mayday has been able to remain extremely hard-working and consistent for over 15 years in a landscape full of ups & downs and unhealthiness. They have achieved long-term success and have helped write the map on how things are done properly in this scene. Most importantly, they have built up and now benefit from an unimaginably dedicated and supportive fanbase. Join me as I catch up with Derek Sanders and discuss all of this plus much more!

Jason Dunn of Hawk Nelson: Erased
Jason Dunn started Hawk Nelson in 2000 with his pals northeast of Ontario where they were like thousands of other aspiring garage bands who just loved to make noise until a connection with Trevor McNevan towed them in to ride the wave of pop punk right into the height of Tooth & Nail's dominance. In the decade that followed they enjoyed great success, became a business with a full team and commercial momentum of their own until the commercial trends began to shift leaving Jason to feel an internal dissonance that he didn't know how to resolve...

Brandon Ebel- Zoom In/Zoom Out
The mind of Brandon Ebel is quite a unique thing. He has an ability to rapidly shift his perspectives to analyze things at multiple levels, and has a strong bias toward action and a incredible eye for talent of all kinds. He seems to be all over the place but a better description might be that he has a laser focus and intensity that is consistent on a different horizon that perhaps only he understands. His special abilities to adapt and find consistency in extremely dynamic environments like the music industry have had a profound influence on many people over many years and seems very likely to continue.

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Beer Bongs & Jesus
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus hit the national stage right in the pocket of time where the mainstream was taking notice of what our scene was up to. This was partially due to the unique character of Ronnie Winter, who was able to break in and ride that wave and create opportunity for himself in a way that maybe only he could.
Their debut album “Don’t You Fake It” released in the summer of 2006 on Virgin Records and was certified gold by November of that same year.
That meteoric rise brought along with it all that you could imagine of both positive and negative experiences. In this conversation, Ronnie does a great job of both seeing all the forces at play and owning his own part in it all.

Invent Animate: The Path Of Trey Celaya
Trey Celaya has traveled an interesting path to find himself in the unique position of being a member of 2 metal-core bands that are both in their stride. He is the drummer of Fit For A King and he is also one of the primary writers and guitarist/producer of Invent Animate, whose newest album Heavener is enjoying break-out success. This conversation explores some of the deeper parts of where his music and creativity live in the musical sphere and how this influences his process. Follow Invent Animate on Spotify

Ryan Leitru of For Today - Altar Calls and Pit Calls
For Today is a particularly interesting band because they were one of the most outspoken Christian bands ever, but, instead of trying to carefully walk the line between Christian and secular, they just went hard musically AND lyrically. They were able to penetrate deeply into the secular market finding great success in many opportunities like Warped Tour. They were able to achieve longevity, earn a decent living and create brutal music that is still popular and relevant today.

If you need a screen printer, Ryan's brother Brandon, owns a screen printing shop in Cincinnati, Ohio called Independent Print Shop.

Zach Riner - Sent By Ravens
Sent By Ravens lived together in a trailer in South Carolina and built a reputation for a killer live show. They got signed to Tooth & Nail and headed straight to Seattle to record their debut album with Aaron Sprinkle. That record released in 2010 with a swan song follow-up album in 2012. Although their time in the scene was short, they left a real mark with genuine music that still connects with many people today

Capital Lights - Remember The Days
Capital Lights came along in the peak of Tooth & Nail’s power and influence. Oddly, in this period there there are many bands who seemed to have everything going for them and were musically outstanding, yet their full potential was never realized. Bryson Phillips is a a truly gifted singer and songwriter that has been praised by both Brandon Ebel & Aaron Sprinkle over the years. I have had no personal experience with him though, so I really enjoyed getting to hear his perspective of the time he spent in the scene. I’m sure you will too!

Spoken - Walking the Line
Matt Baird of Spoken has been walking the line between club shows and church shows since the late 90's. He’s seen it all and remained steady with both his interests and convictions since day one. I have a ton of respect for creators that can find a way to do what they love long-term, but it’s quite rare. Over the years. I’ve met so many Spoken fans that tell me how much and why they love Spoken. Despite having very similar journeys, i have spent very little time around Matt Baird and Spoken. It has been over a decade since I’ve seen them and was really glad to have the chance for this exchange with Matt.

Josh Porter - The Fear Of God
Josh Porter is one of the most interesting frontmen from our scene and is of a particular type whose spirit of rebellion resonates across many mediums, one of which being Showbread’s music. Their legendary set at Furnace Fest last year seemed to be a testament to how deeply connected their fans were.
This podcast spends a lot of time analyzing the musical, relational and professional choices that bands make. We are often asked why we don’t get into people’s faith more on the podcast, given that it’s such a central theme. Certain people just have a more inherent energy toward the spiritual things, and Josh Porter is one of those people. In this case, he has a new book called Death To Deconstruction, and it seemed like an ideal opportunity to give more perspective into how Josh’s mind works.

Ryan Kirby/Fit For A King - Times Like This
Fit For a King is one of the most successful bands in the modern era of Solid State Records since their signing in 2012. They have worked incredibly hard to build the band’s following in both the physical & digital realms. They come from a long history of shared values & sounds with other Solid State bands and have integrated well into the larger metalcore scene. They continue to build a presence in the even wider space of metal in the digital space. Ryan Kirby is the lead vocalist, lyric writer and co-manager of the band, and I think you will find this conversation to an illuminating perspective into his mindset and why it all works so well

Secret & Whisper + Cry Of The Afflicted Members = In The Arena
James Johnson of COTA and Ryan Loerke of SAW join the show to discuss and give perspective on a pocket of talent in the western Canadian music scene that made its way into the Tooth & Nail/Solid State culture. Jimmy Ryan and Chad Johnson recruited these bands who both had exciting but short careers near the peak of the label’s success. In this episode we cover the scene they came from, how their careers unfolded and what ended them.
James and Ryan are now launching a new band, In The Arena, along with SAW member Jason Ciolli, and COTA members Garrett Packer and Nik Wagener. They have new music releasing this week that you can find through the links below.

Tyson Motsenbocker - Oh, No
If you have been paying any attention to Tooth & Nail over the last several years, you can tell that they have a special regard for Tyson Motsenbocker. Tyson seems to always have been able to make great connections with other artists with both his personality and his songwriting. He’s great as a solo performer and on another level when he has a full band. I always enjoy hanging with him. I do love his new record, Milk Teeth, and we start this episode with an amazing story that caused us to postpone the original recording of this episode.

TDWP - Color Decay w/ Mike Hranica
Mike Hranica has been the frontman of The Devil Wears Prada since its inception in 2005. The band has has been continuously active, stable, and popular for the last 17 years. They have just released their 8th full length record, Color Decay, and are making huge waves with it. Becoming The Archetype - Breaking The Silence
Jason Wisdom himself falls into a certain archetype. A Tooth & Nail kid with a uniquely-wired mind who was inspired by bands like MXPX and Zao - and the range of possibilities for mixing various styles, genres, and mediums of expression that is permitted in the underground scene. Becoming the Archetype began in 2005 and released records until 2012. They are now back in full force after a decade-long hiatus with a new concept record entitled Children of The Great Extinction.
Please join us as we discuss the entire history of the band from its humble origins to the recently-released 6th full-length release on Solid State.

Salt Creek
Today we’re talking to Nathan Richardson of Salt Creek. Nathan started promoting shows as a teenager in Nebraska, he started his own merchandise company, and he has continued to make connections while growing his DIY skills. It seems that Nathan has real gratitude, curiosity, motivation, and finds joy in all that he throws himself into. Salt Creek is a newer Tooth & Nail band who put out a great record last year called Out of The Sky. They will be on the last leg of Labeled Fest in Texas playing with Emery, Norma Jean, Aaron Gillespie, and Oh, Sleeper. Grab your tickets now!

DEAD ALIVE: The Restorative Spirit of Furnace Fest
Furnace Fest means so much to so many different people. From the bands who performed, to the fans who attended. All voices in the Labeled community have truly gathered around this Festival in a deeply meaningful way.
Today we're talking to Jason Zeimet, founder of UnoriginalVinyl, frequent collaborators on physical media projects with Solid State & Tooth & Nail, and former T&N/SS Director of A&R Chad Johnson about a timeless, totally unique project.
In this intimate, vulnerable chat, the guys detail the process of creating DEAD ALIVE, a limited edition, hardcover, foil stamped, 200-page coffee-table book they have created that captures the electrifying photographic history and "direct-from-the-fan & band" accounts of the most uniquely-spirited music gathering in the last 20+ years.
There is a very limited amount of these books available so you'll want to make sure you head to Unoriginal Vinyl at 12 EST on Wednesday, 8/17 to grab a copy before they're gone: https://unoriginal-vinyl.myshopify.com/
32 EXTREMELY limited edition “alternate cover” exclusive vinyl versions of the three UOV Furnace Fest 2021 releases will also be put up with the book, in partnership with Solid State Records.

Ghoti Hook - Twenty Years From Never
Ghoti Hook is a legendary Tooth & Nail band who were among the early explorers and pioneers of our scene. Their special focus and ability to have fun and entertain themselves translated directly into audiences everywhere. They were also incredibly hard workers and innovators who stayed true to their unique DNA through their final epic, beautiful and sad show at Cornerstone ’02. This episode features Joel, Adam and Jaime recounting their days in the band from their early beginnings to the ultimate demise.

idle threat - Not So Blurred Visions
Ernie and his band members in idle threat seem to have arrived at a very interesting time in Tooth & Nail/Solid State history. There is currently a resurgence of interest in raw, aggressive music that incorporates intimate, spacious, and emotional elements. idle threat has done a masterful job of absorbing the important feels of the last 30 years from grunge to emo while finding & pushing new boundaries & complexities.

Valleyheart - Heal My Head & More
his conversation with Kevin Klein from Valleyheart is a great look at how a modern artist sees the landscape today, and in what ways some things always stay the same in the midst of constant change. The one trend that continues to grow is the amount of control artists have over more and more layers of their art form, and why having clear vision and identifying constraints seems to matter more than ever. Valleyheart has a brand new Tooth & Nail album called Heal My Head out now, and its a terrific listen.

The Ongoing Concept - Brothers In Arms
The Ongoing Concept is one of the most DIY bands in the Tooth & Nail/Solid State catalog, and they have achieved many innovative things like building their own instruments from scratch. The journey they have been on has been shaped by those that came before, but is a long quest for the artist to have as much creative control as possible. That desire to control everything has disadvantages too and this all makes for a very interesting conversation with band leader Dawson Scholz.

The Return Of Watashi Wa
In this episode, we get the chance to to talk about a bunch of people in the Labeled universe through the perspective of Seth Roberts whose band Watashi Wa is back and doing big things. Watashi Wa has a new album out on Tooth & Nail on which Seth has pulled together some awesome collaborations. Not only do they have a new record coming out, but they are also on the west coast leg of LABELED FEST for which Seth is working on the the art team to do all the tour visuals and design work. Matt has known Seth since the first Tooth & Nail Tour in 2004, and Seth has always been a great connector of people in every environment he is in. That has led him to a rich set of experiences. We loved getting to discuss that with him and I know you will too.

Caught In The Middle - Side Walk Slam/Run Kid Run
Discovered directly by Brandon Ebel at Cornerstone, this set of individuals successfully navigated a mid-career identity change at the same time the whole industry was navigating major genre transitions. This conversation with David & Neil gives us a window into a fascinating time in our scene through the perspective of what may seem like perpetual outsiders but who truly have a special amount of gratitude that wound up fueling a long and fruitful career.

Lee Humerian -Tooth & Nail Kid in Ukraine
Lee Humerian was the drummer for Phinehas for nearly a decade. He is a very classic stereotype of a Tooth & Nail kid who followed his passion for music, energy and mission for God. Lee was drawn from music into full-time missions landing him in Ukraine in 2014. He and his family have made a home and life there during the escalating conflict over the last few years. I felt this was a great opportunity to get the perspective of someone from our world on a world that seems so foreign and unimaginable to me. This conversation is both fascinating, powerful & heartbreaking, and I’m glad you introduce you to a special person like Lee. I hope you get as much from this episode as I did.

Wolves at The Gate: Eulogies and Building Longevity
Steve and Ben from Wolves At The Gate have been at this game for a long time, and their band is continually gaining momentum, skill, fans, press coverage & relationships. With the release of their 5th album, Eulogies, they are seeing the compounding rewards of those efforts. The band has been able to maintain a clear vision and knows exactly who they are. Their sound and approach to ministry have been unwavering, yet their music progresses. They remain DIY and hands-on in their organization. They seem to have made the transition from a new & upcoming Solid State band to what you would call a veteran, influential Solid State act. In this episode, we discuss some of the changes they have seen in the the business & technology and also the evolution of their process

BONUS: Haste The Day’s Manager POV - Mark Lafay
Mark Lafay was is a big part of the Haste The Day story as you heard in the recent Jimmy Ryan and Stephen Keech HTD episodes. We really needed to speak with Mark as well to further color the stories and see what we might have missed. This is a very fun conversation, and a must listen if you enjoyed the last 2 HTD episodes

HTD Part II Stephen Keech- Walking into Dream Come True
This episode is a continuation of the previous Haste The Day chapter with Jimmy Ryan, who was not a Tooth & Nail kid but found his way into the scene. Jimmy helped build a legendary Solid State band and then walked away from his dream. This left a giant hole which provided the opportunity for a Tooth & Nail kid if there ever was one, the multi-talented Stephen Keech, to walk into to a fairytale dream-come-true scenario and knock it out of the park - taking Haste The Day to an even higher level of success.

HTD Part I- Jimmy Ryan Building and Moving On
Jimmy Ryan, the original lead singer of Haste The Day, is in a rare category. His band was a breakout hit in the pinnacle of the Tooth & Nail/Solid State golden age, but Jimmy was NOT a Tooth & Nail kid. The rest of his band certainly were as they were youth group kids from a nice Indianapolis suburb when they joined forces with Jimmy. He was considerably older than them and, for better or worse, became the "tour dad.” Jimmy may not have grown up as a Tooth & Nail kid, but he was a perfect fit to continue the tradition of Solid State bands who would bring the intensity to the mission of mosh and ministry; he even ended up working at the label for a season!

FSF: The Moon is Down 20 YEAR! w Chad, Steve, and Nick
The Moon is Down is one of the most influential albums in the entire Tooth & Nail catalog. Of course it is a fan favorite, but this one also checks the box in a big way as a named influence by countless artists, drummers, guitarists, song arrangers, and vocalists. Many of whom cite this album as helping them expand their minds to new possibilities and causing them to have creative breakthroughs. This conversation covers primarily the lead up to, capture, and impact of this classic album but also some great stories and interaction between the members and Matt. We loved making this episode and are honored to have had the opportunity.

Ivoryline, Swept Away
Ivoryline is one of those bands that accomplished a lot in a short time but due to the circumstances of reality did not have a career that was able to reach its full maturity. Their fairly short run gives us all that feeling of slight tragedy but also leaves us with a nostalgic feeling of what might have been or still could be. Ivoryline did 2 amazing records with Aaron Sprinkle, had rock radio hits, got on some great tours around the world, and just as quickly lost momentum as the scene, economy, and people's tastes began to change. At the request of many fans, Vocalist Jeremy Gray and Matt take some time to discuss this iconic band from inception to the end.

Labeled: Deep Dive - Underoath: Episode 0: What If We Are All Wrong
The Labeled Universe is expanding! In addition to this Stories, Rumors, and Legends feed, we’re introducing A new labeled podcast called Deep Dives!
This introductory episode looks at coming off of “Erase Me”, the band was filled with conflict over sonic direction and personal issues. Underoath found themselves at a crossroads and were forced to dig deep and reflect on their history within the DIY punk & hardcore scene and the passion they felt at the inception of the band. With that focus, the band made the bold decision to not have any outside input from producers and set off on their own creative silo.

Doug Van Pelt: Enthusiast and founder of HM Magazine
Doug Van Pelt has been focused on our music scene well before it ever existed. He was drawn to heavy music and then Christian music since he was a kid in the 70's. It’s safe to say that he has witnessed the entire phenomenon. What’s more, he literally made it his business to pay attention and share it with others. Doug is very entrepreneurial and began his own publication, HM, in the 80's. Doug is a phenomenal writer and journalist, but not a music “critic” so much as an enthusiast. He is
deeply analytical and a passionate fan. He sees special moments, people, groups, & stories and has spent his life trying to share the special experiences, meaning & beauty he finds in the heavy music & spiritual communities. Doug has observed and covered this movement expertly for the last 40 years.

The Fire Itself: Sean of Phinehas & the Gamer Generation
It used to be that you could tell the reaction to an album by things like first week sales or reviews in major publications, but in 2021 it's a lot different. You can still feel the energy around an important release like this one, but the buzz comes from places like “reaction videos” from prominent YouTubers and other new media. It's a little bit of a different landscape, but there is still just an air about some records that indicates something special, some type of credibility, and The Fire Itself definitely seems to be one of those records.
Sean from Phinehas has a sharp and unique mind that comes from what could be called the gamer generation or a millennial, but he shares qualities with emerging and younger generations in a way that is relevant to his approach to art, creativity, and engineering. Sean & I talk about his background and how he was and still is a gamer and how that has helped him with networking & forming relationships. We also talk about how music has evolved and how people consume it evolved, especially around the time of MySpace and digital music. Of course, we extensively discuss The Fire Itself album that is getting a tremendous amount of attention, the song-writing process and how Sean’s list-writing becomes songs.

Aaron Sprinkle - The Creative Alpha in the Room
Aaron Sprinkle and his brother Jesse began playing in the band Poor Old Lu 30 years ago in 1991. Poor Old Lu broke up in 1996, but Aaron was already well on his way to building an absolutely legendary career of influence on our scene. He’s been a guest on this pod before where we covered the early days of Tooth & Nail, but today we will cover his entire career as a producer. Aaron is also a top-tier songwriter and artist who has never spent any significant time touring and building his individual career. As such, he has been able to engage hands-on with many extremely talented artists over & over again for more than 20 years in a way that would never be possible by pursuing a single band full-time. It’s common for bands to report that he is really was an additional member creatively in that he composed, produced, recorded, sang on, played on, and in a variety of other ways shaped some of the most important music in our scene. After all this time, Aaron is now focusing more on his individual career and interacting with fans, something he has never really done until now.

JB Brubaker of ABR, The Scene’s Biggest Export
August Burns Red is a creation born of our scene, and by all accounts one of the most successful outputs of the whole culture. ABR has sold over a million records in North America alone, has 2 Grammy nominations, and has played over 2000 in shows in 45 countries while having no member changes in the last 18 years. It's astonishing to see what can come out of a very small group of people with shared interests that begin by goofing off together but made steady progress over many years refining their machine and discovering their purpose. The groundwork laid by first and second generation bands was dirty and often dangerous to navigate personally and professionally. ABR was just the right group of individuals that came at just the right time to avoid the common traps, failure modes and gatekeepers by always focusing on the task at hand and by taking our culture's values & aesthetics much farther & wider than any of us or them could have imagined. Huge props to Brent and the whole band, but on this episode I wanted to focus on JB. I’ve learned a lot from him and plan to continue to do so as ABR continues to innovate and deliver at an incredibly high level.

Josh Kemble - The Dogwood Way
Josh Kemble is someone who instantly strikes me as having two of my favorite qualities, mindfulness and authenticity. Combined, they give the experience of being present in a conversation while able to tie in multiple layers of meaning. It's almost as if Josh is aware of the experience he is creating in others, and that's key in crafting music or art that is going to connect with people.
From the stories I've heard over the year and the way they are discussed, and from a few conversations I've had with Josh, it's obvious that Dogwood was a very self- aware and principled band whose micro-culture navigated the emergence of the San Diego pop punk scene of the late 90’s, and then was able to become part of the canon of important artists in our scene.

Matt Pryor of The Get Up Kids: Pioneer in a Parallel Universe
In 1995, The Get Up Kids began exploring their surroundings and expanding their horizons in much the way that early Tooth & Nail and Solid State artists did. In the midwest emo scene, they were sharing the stages with bands of seemingly all genres, while making friends in many other states. They didn’t ask permission for what they did, and no one stopped them from blazing new pathways that would connect the regional underground scenes together and really open up the all-ages movement.
Matt Pryor, TGUK frontman, currently hosts a Vagrant Records podcast series celebrating 25 years of Vagrant releases. This conversation with Matt gives us a great opportunity to look at the Christian piece of the all-ages scene through the eyes of a personality similar to many on this show, but also with an outsider’s perspective.

Uncle Mark
Mark Salomon is a legend and forefather of the Tooth & Nail scene. He was pioneering new artistic and cultural territory while being iconic, professional and a showman
all at the same time.
He has been massively influential from The Crucified and Stavesacre to Neon Horse and his podcast, Never Was, and his reputation for having solid personal relationships across decades with so many other legends.
What a rock singer, a podcaster, and great relationships all have in common is the ability to connect & communicate ideas from your mind though your voice. Everyone loves Mark's voice regardless of what he is doing. If it is his voice expressing his mind, it just works.

Steve Kleisath- Bizzaro
Welcome back to labeled, the stories rumors and legends of tooth and nail records, I’m your host Matt carter and today’s episode features the not only legendary but iconic drummer Steve Kleisath from Strong arm, Shai Halud, further seeems forever, and the darling fire.
He is a legend because he had tremendous influence on records that were tremendously influential and his style inspired many.
He is iconic because he comes in a package that’s different than you might expect. He plays left handed on a reverse setup drum kit and plays quirky parts that seem to come from another dimension. This on top of the fact that Steve has become an a expert at many things including poker and holding world record video game scores. He clearly has a special mind that accesses information and makes decisions in a uniqe way that has had a big impact.
I’ve never spoken to Steve and was very happy to have the opportunity to explore his mind a bit and I think you will enjoy that too.
Strong-arm - council of perfection,
slick shoes - rusty,
stretch arm strong - all we’ve lost,
