Cycle Breaker Parents Unite
By Laura Linklater
So often our ability to show our love for our children can be squashed by day-to-day pressures, by challenging behaviour that we’re unsure how to deal with it, and of course, those triggers from our own upbringing and life experiences. You’re in the right place for all you need to enable you to step into your power as a leader in your family and watch your family relationships bloom.

Episode 34 – Sarah Parkes - Our parenting legacy
If this episode inspired you in some way, take a screenshot of you listening on your device and post it to your Instagram Stories, and tag me @cyclebreakerparentsunite.
Today’s guest is Sarah Parkes. Sarah is a mum of 3, a speaker, author & legacy coach. She helps coaches, therapists & healers parent consciously, whilst growing your legacy & impact.
Her vision is for our children to grow up in a world of possibility, where positive legacy creation is the norm. Where feminine and masculine qualities are equally respected and valued.
We talk about:
· Parenting with a thoughtful focus on the legacy you will leave behind (which is often tricky to envisage when you are ‘in the trenches’ with young children)
· Finding our voice to advocate for ourselves when we have children – the emergence of the lioness!
· Being present in the moment whilst also looking to the future
· Dads – and how Cycle Breaker Dads are so wonderful as they buck societal trends. Extra salute to Cycle Breaker Dads
You can find out more about Sarah and the support she offers on her website at https://www.spcoaching.co.uk/ and her Facebook group: howtotalksokidswilllistenuk
The summit is sadly over now, but if you would still like to listen to Sarah’s talk about sibling rivalry (aka stopping them from fighting!), you CAN still sign up hereand £15 of every purchase will go to Leeds Baby Bank for every purchase.

Anupa Roper joins us today. She is a positive body image advocate and author of the incredible children’s book, Sparrowlegs.
Anupa gives us four points to consider when breaking the societal and in many cases, family cycle of body shame or feeling uncomfortable in one’s body.
1. Exploring our own biases – about ourselves and other people’s bodies
2. Considering the language we use when talking about our bodies and other people’s… the children are always listening
3. Take steps to heal our relationship with food
4. Move towards body acceptance (you don’t have to necessarily love every single part of your body – sometimes that is unrealistic in the short term. But working towards acceptance can be a great first step).
You can find out more (including the blog we talked about) at: sparrowlegs.com You can buy her incredible book through her site too.

I am honoured today to interview Nicola Reekie, a PDA parent and expert who offers solution-focused therapist supporting PDA/ ASD parents with their emotional well-being & creating calm.
Conscious parenting and cycle-breaking are significant commitments in themselves… what about when additional needs and behaviours need to be considered?
Today, Nicola and I discuss:
- Neurodivergent parents and neurodivergent children and young people, especially PDA
- Navigating the school and social care systems as a loving advocate for your child (and supporting your own well-being through that process)
- Breaking the cycle if you were a neurodivergent child who didn’t feel seen, accepted for who you are or even understood… giving your child that wonderful gift (and the feelings that come up when we break cycles)
- Some practical tips for PDA parents and how to find out more in Nicola’s ground-breaking learning hub The PDA Space
You can find out more at: www.thepdaspace.com(there’s a great freebie on the first page).

- Children’s innate curiosity and sparkle… and what it’s like to nourish that
- How many adults there are walking around with ‘school wounds’ (people-pleasing, feeling ‘stupid,’ not being heard etc) who are breaking this cycle for their children by being more involved in their kids’ education and feelings around learning and schooling.

17: When you've been triggered
If this episode inspired you in some way, take a screenshot of you listening on your device and post it to your Instagram Stories, and tag me @cyclebreakerparentsunite.
One of my most common questions is: What do I do when I am triggered, but I still have to deal with the kids?
Here are my six steps:
1. Get safe – using whatever techniques you find the most useful. Starting with three deep belly breaths is great
2. Have a card/ sentence that centres you – something like ‘I’ve been triggered. I can get through this. I am safe.’
3. Take a moment for yourself to feel your feelings – a cuppa, a glass of water, a few breaths hiding in the bathroom…
4. LATER: journal or talk to someone about what happened. What may have set you off, and what the root cause might be
5. Using a technique like Ho’oponopono, go through the process of letting go the hurt.. or reducing its power over you
6. If all of the above still isn’t helping you, you absolutely have the right to seek professional support from a therapist.
Coaching will help you move forward with your plans and your life, whilst therapy will provide targeted, slower, deeper insight and release of emotions and memories that are deeply troubling. You deserve support. You are worthy of this gift. Everyone in your family will benefit from you seeking support.

If this episode inspired you in some way, take a screenshot of you listening on your device and post it to your Instagram Stories, and tag me @laura.theafter.
Today, I talk about the value of our time - as parents and as busy human beings - and I share my reasons for signing up to a new (to me) app that provides child- and adult-friendly tapping meditations using EFT. The time vs money vs speed of getting the solution to my family's problem (poor sleep during lockdown) equation is discussed.
I also talk about the teenage years for family's with currently-small children, and why the relationship you have with your teens starts in their toddlerhood, and childhood years.
And finally the nature of 'action.' In this world of extremes, the small actions aren't often given the credit they deserve... drinking water, prioritising self-care time, 5 minutes of reflection at the end of the day. Actions CAN be big - such as signing up for The Turning Point (my 6-month cycle breaker mentor program, seeking therapy for your specific needs, changing your career (the woman I mention by the way is Lou Hynes, corporate escape mentor, and you can check out Podcast Episode 4 with Josh Peck about Work-Life-Balance if you want to think about that more), but the small changes over time really do add up to huge life changes.

14. The 5 love languages - how to best help your child to hear and feel your love
If this episode inspired you in some way, take a screenshot of you listening on your device and post it to your Instagram Stories, and tag me @laura.theafter.
Healing + skills = the parent you always wanted to be
Gary Chapman's famous book The Five Love Languages presents the concept that there are 5 ways we can express - and also feel - love.
1. Words of affirmation
2. Acts of service
3. Receiving gifts
4. Quality time
5. Physical touch
I talk about them today and share how I have noticed this within my own home. Have you seen similar dynamics in your family?
You can now join my free mini-course, 'The 7-day Connection Builder' to explore the love languages in your family and identify how your child best feels love - and just enjoy connecting with them in a range of ways over the 7 days of the videos (of course, you can binge them or watch and then take longer over each love language - it's your choice!)
If you would like more free training, head on over to the Facebook group Cycle Breaker Parents Unite for more interviews, how-to guides, free training (Friday afternoons) and a community of like-minded parents... and of course learn how to work with me if you want to go deeper and break your cycle with my full support.

13. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
If this episode inspired you in some way, take a screenshot of you listening on your device and post it to your Instagram Stories, and tag me @laura.theafter.
Healing + skills = the parent you always wanted to be
The skills part of this equation is often expressed by the question: ‘how do I get my kids to…?’
Today I explain the ACEs model, which looks at Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and how they affect children and the adults they become.
I explain what ACEs are; some limitations of the model and - most important of all - how YOU HAVE CONTROL OVER YOUR OWN LIFE.
You have the power to seek healing, to learn skills and to break your cycles so you don't pass on intergenerational trauma. The ACEs model and media/ fiction sensationalisation can lead people to feel they are 'damaged' and 'hopeless.' Please know, you have more power than you know and ACEs are not a life sentence.
Learn more about ACEs here in this free 50-minute training delivered by the UK government (aimed at young children professionals, but accessible by everyone).
Dr Jessica Taylor is the psychologist I discussed – her work is incredible and will hugely benefit all cycle breaker parents.

If this episode inspired you in some way, take a screenshot of you listening on your device and post it to your Instagram Stories, and tag me @cyclebreakerparentsunite
In Part 2 of my interview series with hypnotherapist and holistic healer, Aoife Griffin, we delve into an all-too-common misconception people have - and something we have heard a thousand times from people who know they need support, and yet don't feel they deserve it:
"It's too late" or "I'm too old"
We blow this out of the water and share the great news and positive message that it is NEVER too late... and the ripples of your own bravery in healing will spread throughout your family unit, your wider community and ultimately the world. There is never a time when you don't deserve love and to feel good about yourself, calm and whole.

7. We all have trauma
In Part 1 of my interview series with hypnotherapist and holistic healer, Aoife Griffin, we look at the word 'trauma.'
Many people have the misconception that trauma must be brought about from having truly horrific Marvel-comic-origin-story worthy experiences. But simply put, it's not.
We demystify trauma a little here and share part of our own personal experiences and stories from clients.

6. When a family pet dies
Today's special guest is Carrie Kearns, Companion Animal Bereavement Counsellor.
If this episode inspired you in some way, take a screenshot of you listening on your device and post it to your Instagram Stories, and tag me @cyclebreakerparentsunite
Losing a furry (or winged, or scaled...) family member is hard emotionally. It can be difficult to know how to best support your child/ren as they go through their grieving process. And particularly tough for parents who were never able to grieve their own losses as children.
In this episode you’ll hear:
- The importance of age-appropriate honesty - explain what happened in a way they can clearly understand but which doesn’t frighten them
- Why you need to use the words such as dead, died, death, euthanasia. Communicate the permanence of what happened - if there is any doubt as to whether the pet will return or not then the child will cling to that hope.
- Don’t be ashamed to show your emotions, but also try not to offload onto the child so they feel they have to push their feelings aside to support you. Allow your child to see the effect the loss has on you but also see how you cope, because they may model their behaviour on yours.
- Be prepared for questions and brutal honesty from your child. They say it as it is, and they ask the same questions over and over in the hope that the answer will change. If you are clear and stay to the same response they find it easier to process and move forwards.

1. Step into your power
Stepping into the parenting role you wish to have – and away from the style of parenting you are unhappy with – requires so much more than following a sequence of prompts from a book.
We need to first give ourselves the permission to step fully into who WE are and allow ourselves to discover and live our authentic selves. This is why so many courses and books that focus on behaviour change alone don’t hit the mark. Because the mark is inside us and only we have the power to change the way we live to become in alignment with the person we truly are.
In this podcast, I talk about
1. Why we as modern adults, let alone parents, are cut off from our authentic voice
2. Why it is so important to reclaim our power as humans before we can make long-lasting deep changes in our relationships
3. Permission to be you
