Episode 15 - PRIORITIZING PRINCIPLES THE PRINCIPAL'S PERSPECTIVE WITH HENRY TURNER

Every kid, every day. Sound familiar?

Across the country, many, if not most, schools ascribe to some variation of this educational principle.

Kids are at the heart of our work as educators. And though we are united in our intention to encourage and enhance learning for ALL students, efforts to establish equitable learning environments have been piecemeal at best, and more often, have exacerbated division.

Dr. Henry Turner, parent, principal, anti-racist educator, and unabashed student advocate, is not one to shy away from stirring things up. Impassioned and committed to empowering voice and agency, Henry challenges us to be better educators, better parents, and better humans by focusing our perspectives through others’ lenses, reminding us that learning -- no matter our age -- includes vulnerability, discomfort, and empathy.

Episode 7 - MAKING SENSE OF SEL + CRT TO TEACH WHOLE CHILDREN

Episode 7 - MAKING SENSE OF SEL + CRT TO TEACH WHOLE CHILDREN

We live in the age of ubiquitous information, and right now at least, it seems that we’re witnessing, experiencing, and processing unprecedented amounts of highly charged events and emotions.

How can we help our children make sense of things when we aren’t even sure ourselves? What are appropriate response mechanisms and outlets? How can we keep our eyes on the proverbial prize when the promise of it keeps moving further away?

As parents, we know our kids look to us -- for comfort, for safety, for hope. As educators, our kids look to us for structure, for answers. In this episode, we discuss the importance of modeling mindfulness and prioritizing social-emotional health. We acknowledge that emotions are integral to our human experience, drive our mindset and mindstate, and are crucial to learner-centered environments.

Episode 5 - UNPACKING THE NOW: OUR SECOND WAVE OF EMOTIONS

Episode 5 - UNPACKING THE NOW: OUR SECOND WAVE OF EMOTIONS

The 2019/20 school year is coming to a close and the CDC has released reopening guidelines for schools that make one thing clear:
Schools will not look the way we want this fall.
In this episode, we give ourselves permission to grieve as we feel this second wave of emotions. By exploring our own emotions and unpacking our visceral reactions, we realize that auditing our “nows” and “hows” are necessary to move forward. And, as often is the case, reflection clarifies intention. Pulling from sound instructional design, we talk about the importance of focusing on outcomes to slice through the clutter and simplify intent. This brings us an opportunity to invite a “guest” to the table and pour a glass to talk pedagogy and space.

Note: This episode is the second in a “back to school” series where we share ideas on starting a new school year with so many uncertainties.
