#120 Only Two Options
The wide world of education has been changing through the years. Once upon a time, the issues school-age students faced weren't nearly as formidable as they are today. With the aggressive woke, anti-God, anti-life, anti-American agenda in today's public schools, a Christian family simply must take this educational option off the table. That leaves only two options: private Christian schools and homeschooling.

#119 Cancelling Disney+ and Other Woke Subscriptions
With the not-so-secret news that Disney is going full-blown woke, many people have cancelled their Disney+ subscriptions. This is well and good, but we want to challenge these same families to also cancel their woke public school memberships.

#112 Are You on a School Waiting List?
A large number of families have opted out of public school, which we believe is good. Many parents made a decision to send their kids to private school. But here’s the deal. Private schools rely on brick-and-mortar buildings to provide classroom space. And this is a limited commodity with a very real cap. In other words, private schools can only accept so many new students before they must stop enrollment. The result is that waiting lists at private schools have skyrocketed. When you decide to homeschool, you won't be on a waiting list.

#111 Homeschooling by Force, Fear, or Faith

This is the 3rd in a 4-part series in which we look at questions related to culture. In this episode, we ask what is broken in culture that we can work to restore? IOW, what was good, is now broken and no longer working -- we want it in our life, but something has to change and improve to make things right again, maybe in a whole new paradigm-shifting way? We'll discuss an answer we believe to be true.

#108 The Vaccine Hot Potato
Do you even remember what your opinion on vaccines was prior to COVID? In this show, we take you back to June of 2019 when the New York City school system removed the provision for religious exemption with regard to vaccines. Then we recount the 2020-2021 school year, which was a complete disaster. Schools developed a COVID response plan that included tase masks, social distancing, plastic barriers, and online teaching. All these requirements were totally impractical for the millions of K-12 students still in the system. What do parents want in tough times as well as "normal" times? We attempt to answer this important question.

These are things we also believe are possible for Christians and homeschooling families to add or contribute to the culture of our families, churches, and communities.

#104 It's Not Easy to Climb Smooth Mountains
Americans tend to like things to be quick and easy. This certainly applies to meals (think microwaves, cereal, and "instant" oatmeal). What about homeschooling? #89 Homeschool Rocks
Have you ever seen those rocks in front of public school buildings with a spray-painted message announcing the news of a kid's birthday? That’s all well and good, but we can think of much bigger news to share. We believe that the best news going on in America right now is the homeschooling movement. In other words, "Homeschooling Rocks." And when you think of rocks, do priorities also come to mind? You know, the important things in life. If you don’t already know, let me inform or remind you that homeschooling provides the best answers for the big rocks of life, especially when it comes to the education, socialization, training in righteousness, and overall well-being of your children. IN this show, we share some big rocks that you can prioritize when you homeschool.

#86 Eric Carle and The Very Hungry Caterpillar
On May 23, 2021, Eric Carle passed away after a lifetime of achievements spanning 91 years. He is best known for his illustrated children’s books including Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Carle is quoted as saying that he attempted to “…bridge the gap between the home and school...home represents...warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child…I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases, we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown…” Wow. I couldn't agree more. And what a pro homeschool statement.

#85 The Word in Motion - It's Time to Make Your Move

#80 Mr and Mrs Lastname
I worked in children’s ministries for three decades (the 1990’s, 2000’s, and 2010’s). One of my pet peeves was the trend of introducing the adult leaders as Mr Joseph or Miss Susie. When I was the Commander of AWANA I insisted that all kids address the adult leaders as Mr Smith or Mrs Jones. What do you think? Was this really necessary? Or was I trying to be a fish swimming upstream for no good reason?

#79 Prayer Focus # 7 of 10

#77 What Will It Take?
Many parents stepped out in faith and joined the homeschool movement in the fall of 2020. It wasn’t part of their plan, but drastic changes in the world forced them to be more intentional than ever about the education of their kids. Maybe you seriously considered the possibility of homeschooling last fall but decided to give conventional schools another chance. As this school year unfolded, you became more frustrated with your school’s response to COVID-19. It could also be that some other irritation was on a slow boil, simmering in the background. Our question to you today is this: What will it take? In this episode, we take a look at the issues at stake.

#76 Prayer Focus #6 of 10
This year—in 2021—we want to invite you to join us in a new prayer initiative. Each month we’re going to focus on one specific prayer for the homeschooling community and the movement we represent collectively. Today we’re going to look at the 6th item on our new list of 10: That homeschool resource providers will be able to supply the increased demand.

#75 Why Study the Bible
Apologia just launched a brand new Bible curriculum titled The Word in Motion. Rachael is the author – pretty cool. And one of our sons is the illustrator – doubly cool. This two-volume study is published in partnership with Walk Thru the Bible. What makes this course different from others? But more importantly, why is Bible study so important in the first place?

#74 COVID Baby Boom or Bust?
When our country locked down in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many jokingly quipped that people will either get fat and lazy, get in the best shape of their lives, or get pregnant. When January 2021 rolled around, the world anxiously awaited the news. Was there about to be a baby boom? Our 3rd grandchild was born late January – a clear and undeniable COVID baby. Sadly, the overall US and world statistics showed a baby bust. Is this good or bad news? What does this say about our culture? What should the homeschooling community think and do about this trend?

The homeschool market doubled from 2019 to 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic was largely the reason for this significant demographic shift. Will all the newbies be one and done? In this episode, we paint four possible scenarios. We even go out on a limb and make a bold prediction.

We'll provide some ideas from our experience.

#49 The Routine, Rhythm, and Flow of the Day
You may have heard homeschooling referred to as a lifestyle. That’s great, but maybe right now you’re just trying to figure out how to have structure, order, or some kind of routine to each day. #47 The Tidal Wave of Homeschooling is Here
When the shelter-at-home orders were put in place in March of 2020, millions of families suddenly found themselves in a mandatory trial run of homeschooling. As the weeks turned into months and a new school year approached, a large number of these families decided to stay the course and continue educating their kids at home. Curriculum providers, like Apologia, found themselves struggling to supply the increased demand for resources. Homeschooling was already the most significant educational movement of the last 50 years. Now a coronavirus pandemic ushered in a tidal wave of new homeschooling families. Are you riding the wave or treading water, lost and adrift at sea?

By now a couple has one or two kids and is facing that big question about whether to stop having babies or go for one more. Very few are looking at having as many blessings as God would bring into their family, and probably because that is too RADICAL of a thought. In this show we give our testimony about how we ended up with 7 arrows in our quiver.

#42 Butterfly Gardens
Our family loves butterflies. We have had a butterfly bush in our yard for 15+ years, and it definite attracts the butterflies. Several years ago, Rachael planted some milkweed, and eventually raised some Monarch butterflies. That was such an exciting project, that we turned a whole section of our front yard into a bonifide butterfly garden complete with milkweed, butterfly bushes, and more. Now every August and September, Rachael leads our family on a wonderful adventure of raising butterflies from eggs to caterpillars to chrysalises to butterflies. It’s a glorious journey from start to finish. And it’s a great way to start each new homeschool year. In this episode, Rachael shares some details so that you can do the same.

#39 Devo - Hypocrisy v. Integrity
This is a short 6-minute devotional based on Matthew 23:27.

#38 Radically Intentional Parenting, part 4 of 12, DISCIPLINE
Parenting is not for the faint of heart. It’s hard work. It’s so hard that some parents essentially throw in the towel and let it happen to them rather than taking the bull by the horns and being proactive and intentional. It may seem easier, but trust us. You really don’t want to be a random, whatever kind of parent. In this episode, we talk about Discipline. What practical advise would you give to a parent who wants to break their child’s will without breaking their spirit. How can we get to their heart and not just their behavior? What does it look like to be intentional on this matter of discipline?

#37 Feel the Freedom
Homeschooling is often viewed as for the few, a minority, the called. Many homeschooling parents are an independent lot, comfortable with blazing new trails or taking the path less traveled. In the past few months, every family in America (and the world for that matter) have experienced what I call a mandatory trial run of homeschooling. Now everyone can say they did this at least once in their lives. Stories are surfacing reporting anywhere from 22 to 60% of parents plan to continue this fall. Is this because they enjoyed a new found quality of life, improved academic results, or the freedom to call the shots? Rachael, what would you say about the idea of “feeling the freedom?”

#36 Radically Intentional Parenting, part 3 of 12, Meal Times
Welcome to part 3 in a series titles RADICALLY INTENTIONAL PARENTING. Today we want to talk about Family Meal Times. In Deut 6, parents are told to teach their kids to love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. Then it gives four times to do this teaching. When you rise up, when you lie down, when you walk along the way, and when you sit down. I’m thinking some good “sit down” opportunities are meal times. Why is it important to be intentional about this aspect of family life?

#35 Let's Really Talk Homeschool
In March and April, millions of parents faced a mandatory trial run of homeschooling. Literally every family in America was forced to figure out school-at-home, parent-directed education, and homeschooling in one way or another. I’m sure parents learned quite a bit during this time. Some realized just how hard their kid’s teachers worked. Others discovered how inefficient the brick and mortar education model really is. And still others got to know their kids in a whole new way – maybe even liked having the whole family together all day. We found ourselves listening to many of these families and answering their questions about how to make this an adventure that is positive, good, productive, and exciting. Today, let’s take a close look at homeschooling and dive into some details. In other words, Let’s Really Talk Homeschool.

#34 Radically Intentional Parenting, part 2 of 12, Family Worship
Parenting is not for the faint of heart. It’s hard work. It’s so hard that some parents essentially throw in the towel and let it happen to them rather than taking the bull by the horns and being proactive and intentional. We’ve all seen the results of this kind of random, que sera, whatever parenting. In this episode, we talk about church, devotions, and family worship. Why is it important to be intentional about this aspect of family life?

#33 High School - Thinking Out of the Box
When you homeschool, your kids may be in 3rd grade math, 4th grade science, and 5th grade writing. The point is, assigning a grade level isn’t that helpful. But what about high school? Should your student automatically graduate when they are 17 or 18 years old? What about taking a Gap Year? And what is this thing called a Super Senior Year? Hear the stories of how each of our kids had a very different high school experience, and you just might start thinking out of the box too.

#32 DEVO - Can You Rejoice During the Coronavirus Crisis?
Here's a timely devotional in light of the coronavirus pandemic and based on Philippians 4:4-13

#31 Radically Intentional Parenting, part 1 of 12 - Introduction
Parenting is not for the faint of heart. It’s hard work. It’s so hard that some parents essentially throw in the towel and let it happen to them rather than taking the bull by the horns and being proactive and intentional. We’ve all seen the results of this kind of random parenting. But starting a discussion about intentional parenting can be like pressing some hot buttons. So another title for today’s show could be Hot Button Parenting. That’s your heads up. But remember that everything we discuss is meant to help you as parents. We want you to be affirmed, encouraged, challenged, and inspired. So hang on folks. This could be interesting.

#29 When Should You Expect Kids to Read?
Most kids start school around age 5 or 6 years old. And the first big accomplishment that parents and teachers are tracking is when the student can read. The pressure is on big time from day one. Will their kindergartener or first grader succeed or fail in this area? How will parents react if their little one struggles? What about the child? How much pressure do they end up feeling? We have seven children. We’ve been there. We look forward to setting you free with wisdom, data, experience, and perspective.

We invite you to listen and learn.

After the presentation, you can listen to an original song from the perspective of one of Jesus’s siblings called “This Brother of Mine” — written and composed by Anne MacCallum. The show will close with a gospel message.

#23 The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Christmas is often called the most wonderful time of the year. And for good reason. I hope you and your family have been able to slow down some and take in the true and full meaning of the Advent season. In order to help, today’s podcast is a Christmas devotional. Enjoy.

We hope you have plans to enjoy this holiday season, remember and ponder the incarnation of Jesus Christ, and make some good memories with loved ones. Today, we want to share one of our favorite Thanksgiving family traditions. We actually start this one November 1st and keep it going every day up to Thanksgiving Day.

#19 Top Mistakes Homeschoolers Make
Homeschooling is hard and scary. You certainly don’t want to mess up your kids worse than they already are and prove to all your critics that you can’t do this. It really is easy to mess up in the frenzy of it all. We want to help you succeed and avoid making these common mistakes, so listen and take note of six top mistakes that homeschooling families often make.

#18 Early Morning Bus Rides
Once upon a time, we envisioned our kids getting on a little yellow school bus and going away for 6-7 luxurious hours each week day. Yet these buses pick up kids at early morning hours when the sun hasn’t even come up yet. Our society is already sleep deprived, so would you really put your innocent 4, 5, or 6 year old on one of these vehicles at six-something in the morning? What better opportunity does homeschooling provide?

#17 Devo - Praise Him in the Storm
This show includes a devotional based on Lamentations 2:21-23 and 3:22-23.

#16 Don't Stop at High School, part 2
Why is it that so many families stop homeschooling when their kids get to high school? Is it because they don’t think homeschooling in high school is serious enough? Is it because they want their kids to get a “real” diploma? What’s going on here? How valuable would you rate a homeschool diploma? Davis and Rachael certainly have their answer to this question. This episode is part 2.

#15 Don't Stop at High School, part 1

This episode is part 1 of 2.

LTH #014 - Pets in School
Has it ever struck you as odd that pets are not allowed in school? I guess it makes sense in many regards. But what kid wouldn’t love to have their pet sitting on the floor next to their desk while they do their writing assignment or take their math test. What do you think? Should homeschooling families be intentional about letting their family pet be an integral part of their students study time? In this episode, we talk about why we believe pets should be allowed to go to school…at least to homeschool.

LTH #013 - Benefits of Having the Same Teacher Each Year
Who was your favorite teacher? We all have one. We think it’s a shame that students can’t have their favorite teacher for more than one year. As far as we know, homeschooling is the only way that allows for this benefit. In this show, we talk about why it is so good for your kids to have the same teacher each year.

LTH #012 - Devotional, Rooted in Christ
This is a short, five-minute devotional based on Ephesians 3:17-18.

LTH #005 - Encourage
In this episode, we encourage homeschooling families to persevere. Please don't quit. At least keep at it for 3 or 4 years. Statistics show that you just might make it if you can get through through those first few tough years of figuring it out.

LTH #004 - Affirm
In this episode, we AFFIRM your decision to homeschool. There will be plenty of people (family, friends, and strangers) who will not support your decision to take this path less traveled. But Davis and Rachael will not be on that list. They firmly support your decision to homeschool.
