A large number of families have opted out of public school, which we believe is good. Many parents made a decision to send their kids to private school. But here’s the deal. Private schools rely on brick-and-mortar buildings to provide classroom space. And this is a limited commodity with a very real cap. In other words, private schools can only accept so many new students before they must stop enrollment. The result is that waiting lists at private schools have skyrocketed. When you decide to homeschool, you won't be on a waiting list.

On May 23, 2021, Eric Carle passed away after a lifetime of achievements spanning 91 years. He is best known for his illustrated children’s books including Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Carle is quoted as saying that he attempted to “…bridge the gap between the home and school...home represents...warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child…I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases, we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown…” Wow. I couldn't agree more. And what a pro homeschool statement.

I worked in children’s ministries for three decades (the 1990’s, 2000’s, and 2010’s). One of my pet peeves was the trend of introducing the adult leaders as Mr Joseph or Miss Susie. Do you feel your grip loosening? Do you let them decide these things on their own? Are their any dangers? We offer two main suggestions.

The homeschool market doubled from 2019 to 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic was largely the reason for this significant demographic shift. Will all the newbies be one and done? Will the homeschool population remain flat? Or will there be another surge of new families that decide enough is enough and make the jump to home education? In this episode, we paint four possible scenarios. We even go out on a limb and make a bold prediction. 

Most reports agree that the homeschool community grew from 3 million to 6 million this last August. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic was largely the catalyst causing families to decide to give homeschooling a try last fall. We want to share two important messages to everyone today. 1) You can do this. And 2) It’s good, really good for your kids.

When the shelter-at-home orders were put in place in March of 2020, millions of families suddenly found themselves in a mandatory trial run of homeschooling. Our family loves butterflies. We have had a butterfly bush in our yard for 15+ years, and it definite attracts the butterflies. Several years ago, Rachael planted some milkweed, and eventually raised some Monarch butterflies. That was such an exciting project, that we turned a whole section of our front yard into a bonifide butterfly garden complete with milkweed, butterfly bushes, and more. Now every August and September, Rachael leads our family on a wonderful adventure of raising butterflies from eggs to caterpillars to chrysalises to butterflies. It’s so hard that some parents essentially throw in the towel and let it happen to them rather than taking the bull by the horns and being proactive and intentional. It may seem easier, but trust us. You really don’t want to be a random, whatever kind of parent. In this episode, we talk about Discipline. We found ourselves listening to many of these families and answering their questions about how to make this an adventure that is positive, good, productive, and exciting. We want you to be affirmed, encouraged, challenged, and inspired. So hang on folks. This could be interesting. 

Chris Davis passed away in October 2019. He was very instrumental in our own homeschooling journey in so many ways. In this episode, we share some of the ways that Chris and his ministry (The Elijah Company) shaped the start and continuation of our homeschooling adventure.

It really is easy to mess up in the frenzy of it all. Once upon a time, we envisioned our kids getting on a little yellow school bus and going away for 6-7 luxurious hours each week day.  Yet these buses pick up kids at early morning hours when the sun hasn’t even come up yet.
