Episode 54 - Memphis Library Comic Con
Show notes: My wife Nicki Workman takes the stage with comic creators Mike Norton and John Ostrander at the inaugural Memphis Libraries Comic Con during this year's Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 6th. Mike Norton is a former MSCA member and is the creator of BattlePug and co-creator of Gravity for Marvel Comics. He's worked for more comic companies than I have toes and fingers. John Ostrander is a legend in the comics industry having created the modern Suicide Squad (as well as appearing in James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad" movie), co-creating Oracle for DC Comics with his late wife Kim Yale, and writing comics like "Seduction Of The Gun", "The Kents", and "Star Wars: Legacy" and many, many, many more. Thanks to Nicki for moderating the panel and doing the interview with Norton and Uncle John!
Oh, I also include some Mid-South Cartoonists Association event news..."stay tooned!"

Episode 52 - "That Katie Jones"
Show Notes: Katie Jones was born in Memphis, TN and studied at the Memphis College of Art for her BFA in Painting and a Masters of Art in Teaching in Art Education. A majority of her time is spent making classroom examples or lesson plans but at the request of her therapist she is allowing herself to be "Katie the Artist" again in her life. Her childhood was spent growing up between Frayser and Raleigh in North Memphis and would often draw to escape the harsh reality of growing up without a father in her life. After promising her grandmother in 4th grade she would go to the Memphis College of Art she did just that and went on to get a BFA in painting and later on a Masters of Art in Teaching in Art Education to spread the joy and chaos of art to kids in Kindergarten to 12th grade which she has done fully licensed since 2010. Katie was also greatly influenced by the southerwestern artist Ted DeGrazia and Keith Haring. She would often focus on the way people sat or moved with each other than what they were wearing or their faces, and developed her own style of often faceless figures. She is a member of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association, Artists' Link, and is the new social media director for MidSouthCon. She has had her art in art shows around the mid-south including recently had her art featured in the MSCA's "SPAMalittle: Knights Of The Drawing Table" art show at Germantown Community Theatre, and will be part of Playhouse On The Square's 45th Annual Original Art Auction on April 22nd, and the upcoming Memphis Libraries' Comic Con on Free Comic Book Day- Saturday, May 6th.
There's also some MSCA news included such as our next dinner meeting on Tuesday, April 4th at Garibaldi's Pizza from 6-8pm, and Lou Ferrigno's appearance at 901 Comics East on April 4th starting at 4:30pm. Give a listen for more details.

Episode 48 - "Advice From The Couch"
Show notes: For this episode of Drawing Funny I take a trip to our couch to have a comics conversation with my wife and live-in I.T. person- Nicki Workman (with special guest appearance by our cat Jarael). This is a follow up to Episode 47 – “Back To Basics". While on our way home from the MSCA December dinner meet-up this month I told Nicki about a couple recent conversations with some fellow local creators. They had asked for my advice on their art and projects. Well, even though I do a podcast that offers advice on just about every episode (and even multiple times on each of those episodes), after my many failures and less than stellar art career I've been questioning my art expertise when it comes to giving advice. I asked her is she thought I was qualified, and that conversation led to this episode which includes some very good advice by her. Not just on creating art, but some of the business basics of being creative for a living, as well as her life in corporate America, and reasons for continuing her education at this point in her life. Was happy to catch her on break between semesters to get her to share her thoughts. I'm super proud of her being able to juggle a full time day job and work trips while attending grad school online and keeping a 4.0 GPA at the same time. She's in the home stretch for her MBA!
I also have some local MSCA news about upcoming dinner meetings (next one is Tuesday, January 3rd), current and upcoming art shows and plays around town, as well as some news about the first ever MSCA Drink-N-Draw (Wed. 1/18/23) and Sketchy Saturday (1/28/23) at 901 Comics East. I plan on being back before the end of the year, and recording my 50th episode around the first of the year. Happy holidays. Stay warm, stay safe, stay tooned, and keep drawing funny!

Bonus Episode: MSCA Membership Info - Join Now For Free!
Show notes: So, just what is the MSCA..? The Mid-South Cartoonists Association (MSCA) is a non-profit organization of professional cartoonists, aspiring cartoonists, and cartooning enthusiasts. In 2022 the MSCA has celebrated 35 years of drawing funny in the Mid-South, and our podcast just entered it's 3rd season. For the MSCA it all started way back in the spring of 1987 when a small group of professional cartoonists came together to form The Memphis Cartoonists Group. The name didn’t stick and by the third meeting and first official newsletter the name became The Mid-South Cartoonist Association (with ‘Cartoonist’ becoming plural in 2000). Many founding members worked from home so the MSCA was created to bring together cartooning professionals, and invite aspiring professionals and cartooning fans of all backgrounds, ages and skill levels to join in on the fun of cartooning. Our members have worked for newspapers, magazines, ad agencies, and comic book publishers such as Marvel, DC Comics, Image, and Dark Horse, as well as self-publishing their own creator-owned projects and teaching others. The group has promoted the art of cartooning by putting its creativity and time behind various cartooning classes, conventions, charity fundraisers, art shows, anthology comics/zines, drawing nights (and mornings), art trips, web comics, a podcast, as well as having appeared on TV, radio, other podcasts, and in various print media. Our aim is to help more cartoonists, writers, and animators to reach their goals no matter how young or old, published or just starting out. Whether you enjoy simply reading cartoons, dig drawing magazine cartoons or comic books, like to mentor or want to learn, or even if you just need to find an artist or writer to collaborate with, please come check us out. If you love cartoons, are drawn to comics, or just draw funny then the MSCA is for you...and it's free to join us. Either join our mailing list, interact with us on social media, message us on Facebook, or stop by any MSCA event. It's pretty simple and doesn't cost you anything. If you'd like to join us in person, we meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm at Garibaldi's Pizza near the U of M. MSCA monthly meet-ups are free and open to the public- just bring a few bucks if you'd like to order off the menu. And be sure to introduce yourself. If you have kids interested in getting into cartooning please bring them out. If you are a kid, please have a parent attend with you. If you're not sure about meeting a group of sketchy strangers all by yourself then feel free to bring along a friend. We love to have folks bring whatever art they've been working on and encourage others to talk toons, draw on jam pieces, or do napkin doodles with us!

Episode 47 - "Back To Basics"
Show notes: Well, I'm back to basics with this episode of Drawing Funny. This is a bit of a follow up for Episode 40 – “Where Do I Begin?”. After a couple conversations with some new comic creators, I wanted to share some more thoughts on creating comics with you. Trust me, they're very basic, but knowing the basics of creating comic books is something I feel can be often overlooked by those new to writing, drawing, printing, and promoting comics (and themselves). I also have some local MSCA news about upcoming dinner meetings (next one is Tuesday, December 6th), current art shows, and plays around town, as well as some very sad Bat-news about the passing of Kevin Conroy- the iconic voice of Batman for 30yrs. Plus I send out some congrats to Joe Stuber on his Comic Book Central podcast's 9th Anniversary! I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving. Stay safe, stay tooned, and keep drawing funny!

Show notes: This is a bonus episode with a quick message from our illustrated MSCA president, Kevin L. Williams to remind everyone of our November 1st dinner meeting this Tuesday night from 6-8pm at Garibaldi's Pizza (near the UofM). Plus Kev shares some info on our upcoming "Spamalittle: Knights of the Drawing Table" art show at Germantown Community Theatre in March (MSCA member Jim Palmer is starring in GCT's current play "An Inspector Calls"), and some other plans that be a brewing for the group as we finish out our 35th anniversary year in 2022 and move into 2023. Have any thoughts on what you'd like to see happen with the MSCA in the future..? Then be sure to come out to the dinner meeting, join our mailing list, and/or interact with us on social media.
Hope you have a safe and happy Halloween weekend, and that we get to see you this Tuesday night at Garibaldi's.

Episode 43 - "Sour Grapes"
Show notes: In this episode I share some local upcoming event news, plus I sit down to talk toons and discuss some Sour Grapes with cartoonist Tim Jones. Tim is the creator/artist/writer of the widely popular, self-syndicated comic strip, “SOUR GRAPES”. He created SOUR GRAPES back in 2013. It's a weekly strip about “Aesop”, a miserable-flying dog; his pet cloud, ‘Ominous’ and odd family- all living in a problematic and troubled world. In 2014, the strip found its way into print starting in two newspapers in Rhode Island, where he lives with his family. Soon after, the comic strip continued its success and started to appear in more and more newspapers. Today, SOUR GRAPES continues to grow in popularity and can now be seen in multiple newspapers across the country. Tim has been a cartoonist and freelance illustrator for over 25 years and he is a member of the National Cartoonist Society and Mid-South Cartoonists Association. He also teaches cartooning and speaks at local schools and libraries. Tim has created several compilation SOUR GRAPES books and story-coloring books. He appears at various events, Comic-Cons and book signings. His next upcoming events are in July at Plastic City Comic Con in Fitchburg, MA and Terrificon at Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. Thanks to Tim for taking time out to come on the show. Hope to run into him in person at some point. Happy birthday/anniversary to Comics and Collectibles, 901 Comics (Midtown), Metropolis, and my wife Nicki Workman!

Show notes: In this solo episode I discuss the Little House Art Project art classes and Antonio Johnson (ADJ Design) and I teaching there in Southaven recently. Antonio was showing them how to use the art program Clip Studio Paint, and I showed the students how to draw sketchcards.
"Little House Art Project began as an idea born of an art program for special needs children- but, why stop with artistically gifted, special needs teen? Many teens yearn for art instruction. Little House Art Project is an opportunity for all teens to learn more about fundamentals of art. Studies in light sources, painting still life, and more will be explored in this series of classes."
I also share some event and Kickstarter news, talk about my latest Nosferatu sketchcards, and do some "Playing It Forward" when I mention the podcasts Supergirl Radio and Making Comics - two podcasts I listen to on a regular basis. I recommend checking them out, and thank them for either having me and Nicki on their show, or giving Drawing Funny a shout-out.
Plus I recap some of Nicki's and my experiences during Free Comic Book Day 2022 around Memphis. (You can listen to our thoughts and interviews in Episode 41 – “FCBD Multitude Of Madness”.)
Stay well, stay tooned, and keep drawing funny!

Episode 41 - "FCBD Multitude Of Madness"
Show notes: In this episode Nicki and I hit the road to celebrate Free Comic Book Day 2022 around Memphis. We stop at Comics & Collectibles, The Cellar, and 901 Comics East and get our free comics, pick up our hold box comics, do some additional shopping, and chat with friends. We talk toons with local comic creators Dale Martin, Brad & Skoot Starnes, Matt Bowers, Gabe DeRanzo, and Janet & Martheus Antone Wade about their current and upcoming projects such as The Dragon Templar, Fathom, Memphis, Stoned Ninja, Shinobi: Ninja Princess and Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa comics. (Sorry for some of the poor audio quality.) We also caught Doctor Strange And The Multiverse Of Madness and give some non-spoiler thoughts on this latest Marvel movie. Free Comic Book Day happens on the first Saturday in May each year. Be sure to contact your local comic shop (or library) to see if they participate in FCBD. Stay well, stay tooned, and keep drawing funny!

Episode 40 – “Where Do I Begin?"
Show notes: I'm solo again for this 40th episode. Lately I've seen a lot of comics creators online ask, "Where do I begin?" Well, "Just start making comics." seems like the most honest answer, but I know that there's a lot more to that question. I don't have all the answers, but I do share my my comics origin story and thoughts on creating comics. I offer up some advice, resources, cautionary tales, and more about making comics and getting them out there to readers. Lots of ways to make comics these days, and lots of ways to read comics, too. I've seen the pros and cons of doing cons. I don't offer any real advice on breaking into comics, because like writer/editor/publisher Mark Waid has said, "Breaking into comics is like breaking out of jail: once you find a way, that way is closed forever." It's different for everyone. I do however encourage making comics- and hope the info shared in this episode will help you not only avoid the pitfalls I did creating my own comics, but also enjoy similar positive experiences like I did. Looking back they far outweighed the negative. If you have any questions I didn't cover feel free to stop by one of the MSCA monthly dinner meetings at the U of M Garibaldi's Pizza (1st Tuesday of the month, 7pm), or drop me a line. If you'd like to share your experiences creating comics I'd love to have you on the show. Stay well, stay tooned, and keep drawing funny, good buddy!

Episode 39 - "Why So Anxious..?"
Show notes: In this solo episode I have some MSCA member/meeting news, more updates on upcoming conventions/events such as Free Comic Book Day and the Memphis Comic Expo(DonnieCon), as well as some memories of mine and Nicki's Saturday in midtown Memphis visiting The Art Center, attending MidTown Con at Black Lodge, seeing a photo exhibit at Crosstown Arts, discovering the Memphis Listening Lab at Crosstown Concourse, and shopping at The Cellar and Comics & Collectibles. Plus I talk about Antonio Johnson's Clip Studio Paint demo at the April MSCA dinner meet-up, and me sliding by 901 Comics, Goner Records, and Burke's Bookstore in the Cooper-Young neighborhood. Also feature the Little House Art Project and their current Autism Awareness art show with the Southaven Arts Council (which runs through April at the Southaven Library), the DeSoto Camera Club's latest photo display at the Hernando Library, plus other mid-south art happenings. The back-half of the episode is about a Facebook post I shared about "high functioning anxiety". I discuss my anxiety/depression/health issues. If you want to skip that part of the show, the local art/event news is at the front ("Anxiety" section begins at 40min 50sec). If you are dealing with any mental or physical issues I hope that you listen to the whole episode and that my sharing what's going on in my head and hands these days helps you. Definitely therapeutic for me to talk out loud about it. Please don't keep whatever you're going through to yourself.- talk to someone and/or seek help(988). Stay well, stay tooned, and keep drawing funny!

Episode 38 - "Ain't Nobody Got Time For That!"
Show notes: In this solo episode I have some MSCA member news, updates on upcoming conventions and events, as well as info on our president Kevin L. Williams being interviewed recently about the Mid-South Cartoonists Association's 35th anniversary for WMC TV5's "Bluff City Life". I also discuss some I CREATE COMIC BOOKS Facebook group threads and share my opinions on impostor syndrome, social/anti-social media, being social in person, making time for positive things, and editing out toxic people and situations that are in our lives.
BIG NEWS- after meeting virtually on Zoom for the last two years due to the pandemic, we were happy to return to in-person meetings at Garibaldi's Pizza this month...and we'll be back on the first Tuesday in April! We had a great turn out- about a dozen members or so. Zoom meetings were great to keep in touch, but it was awesome to see and talk to everyone in person and not through a computer screen. Stay well, stay tooned, and hope to see you in person at Garibaldi's on April 5th..!

Episode 36 - "Business As Usual"
Show Notes: In this episode my fellow Mid-South Cartoonists Association members Kevin L. Williams, Greg Cravens and I pay respect and share stories about our friend and cartoonist Sam Ray who passed away in December, 2021. I've been wanting to get together with some of the local cartooning gang to record a tribute to Sam, and in spite of some technical difficulties we were able to record for a bit during the MSCA monthly zoom call this week (thanks to some quick thinking by Kev.) Another left-hander, Sam was a great cartoonist/writer & created his “Business As Usual” comic strips which were published in The Commercial Appeal, The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, Boy’s Life, Reader’s Digest, Barron’s, Woman’s World, Forbes, and our first MSCA comic anthology. He was also a writer on the "Hagar The Horrible" comic strip for 6 years. Sam was a soft-spoken artist who was always willing to talk toons and swap stories with other cartoonists at our meetings and events. He was part of the MSCA since it's creation in the late '80s, and will be greatly missed.
2022 represents the MSCA’s 35th year of “drawing funny” and I got a recorded state of the association address from MSCA prez Kevin. He mentions some club history and discusses his future plans for our milestone anniversary year. One of which is the upcoming group art show “’Murica”, which will be presented February 17 – 27, 2022, at Germantown Community Theater alongside the comedy play, “The Complete History of America (Abridged).” This art show shares a variation of art styles and techniques from different members Terence Washington, Jim Palmer, Dale Martin, Greg Cravens, Kevin Williams, and Lin Workman (me). Episode 35 - "The Dragon Templar"
Show Notes: "RELEASE THE DRAGON!" MSCA member Dale Martin has released a new ongoing comic series with local writer Brad Starnes: THE DRAGON TEMPLAR!
Set in the depths of the Middle Ages, during the era of the Crusades, this medieval adventure comic follows a band of Knights Templar, Rome's agents on the ground as the Universal Church tries to lay claim to the Holy Land. The band of knights deploy their talents for war protecting Rome's interests and traveling pilgrims alike … all the while harboring in their midst a power they can’t fully understand!
“The Dragon Templar” is an ongoing series by Dale Martin and Brad Starnes. Issues feature 12 black & “white” pages (interiors are on ivory paper) with full-color covers. First issue is available now at 901 Comics (Memphis and Cordova), The Cellar Tabletop Games & Comics (Bartlett), as well as Chicago Comics and Quimby’s (Chicago), with more outlets to come! Also available direct from the creators at www.dragontemplar.com. Dale Martin is a Memphis-based artist/writer/publisher best known for his Watusi the Talking Dog comics (both in print and online). He’s handcrafted comics featuring his original creations since the 1980s and doesn’t see any reason to stop now! He’s also the editor and a contributing artist to our MSCA zine– The Good, The Bad, And The Sketchy. Brad Starnes was first published in the 901 Comics Anthology (with his brother, artist Skoot Starnes), and has written comics in a variety of genres since then.

Episode 34 – “The Show Must Go On...Later” MSCA Art Show Update
Show notes: "The Show Must Go On...Later" In this solo episode we have an update and details on the upcoming MSCA art show at the Germantown Community Theatre. Bad news, it and the play "The Complete History Of America (abridged)" have been pushed back until February due to COVID. Good news- that means any interested Mid-South Cartoonists Association members still have a couple extra weeks to get their art in. The show will be hung the first week of next month and available for viewing February 17-27, 2022. This is one of our 35th anniversary events, and we're working on a couple more. If you have any ideas for ways for us to celebrate, or would like to be on this podcast please contact me at podcast (at) drawingfunny (dot) com. I'd love to hear from you.
Some sad news to share, as I was finishing up this episode I learned that Mid-South Cartoonists Association founding member Sam Ray died back in December, 2021. Sam was a great cartoonist/writer & created his “Business As Usual” comic strips which were published in The Commercial Appeal, The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, Boy’s Life, Reader’s Digest, Barron’s, Woman’s World, Forbes, and the first MSCA anthology comic book. He was also a ghost-writer on the "Hagar The Horrible" strip for six years, illustrated the book “Sane Investing For The Non-Financial”, and self-published a collection of his Business As Usual cartoons. He was incredibly laid back & known to offer friendly advice with soft-spoken words to his fellow cartoonists at many an MSCA dinner meeting- usually while drawing a funny chicken, duck or penguin. Sam and his talent will be missed.

Episode 33- "Priced To Sell- Or Sit..?
Show notes: "How much is that art in the window?" In this solo episode I discuss pricing and selling- or not selling my art, and what some folks have thought about the prices I charge and if my work is worth the cost. I've talked before about how I got into drawing funny for a living and how I've set up at conventions and art shows, but really haven't mentioned why I charge what I do for my sketchcards, sketchcovers, paintings, prints, tees and more. I also talk a bit more on how I create my own art, where I've sold it over the years, and what expenses I've experienced. Plus if you've wondered what exactly is a sketchcard and/or a sketchcover, wanted to know how to get into doing them, or how much they pay- I talk about that as well. I don't have all the answers by a long shot, but if you're struggling with what to charge for your work maybe this will help you understand art pricing and some possible avenues for selling and buying art. If you have any ideas or stories on selling art and/or how you price things, please give me a yell at podcast (at) drawingfunny (dot) com. I'd love to hear from you.
Shameless plug alert: I have several of my hand drawn sketchcards and a few sketchcovers available for sale at a comic shop here in Memphis- The Cellar. There are both official artist returns cards from companies like Topps, Breygent, Cryptozoic, and RRParks Cards and personal sketch cards drawn on my own custom blanks- with more to come after the holidays. If you’re interested in buying any of these please contact the shop. I don’t do commission work so this is the only way to currently purchase/collect any of my art from me. Oh, and if you stop by The Cellar in person be sure to snag some free Drawing Funny podcast and MSCA swag. Lots of buttons and stickers are available while they last, plus they make great stocking stuffers!

Episode 31 - "What A Tool(s)"
Show Notes: If you're wondering about the title for this episode, the Memphis and Southaven area near me are getting some new Whataburger locations, so I thought I'd play off that and discuss what tools and materials I use for producing my art. I'll be discussing my early days of airbrushing in malls in the '80s, literally cutting and pasting art, starting off on working digital, creating early webcomics in the '90s, my sculpting experiences, how I got into using markers, and some other ways I like to get the job done. Plus I send out some congrats to fellow podperson Joe Stuber for Comic Book Central's 400th episode/8th anniversary, and give you some info on former guest Sal Abbinanti's new Kickstarter campaign for his "Atomika" omnibus.
BTW: If after listening to this episode and still have art questions or have suggestions on what types of tools and materials you use, or would like to come on the show to discuss your techniques and/or just talk toons, please give me a shout. I'm happy to give you any answers I can, or hear about how you create your art. Show Notes: I started off working on one episode, but once I added the MSCA news elements it became a bit longer than I wanted, so I decided to do a shorter one just focusing on current and upcoming events here. In this episode I've got info on murals, meetings, plays, art shows, appearances, anniversaries, and more happening around the M-town...as well as Nicki and me playing tourists close to home for my birthday. (BTW- I share a birthday with Cookie Monster- happy birthday, Cookie!) For more info, links, and pics please check out the MSCA website at www.midsouthcartoonists.org. Episode 29 – “Strange And Unusual”
Show Notes: This episode is our 1 year anniversary show, and man what a strange trip and unusual year the first season has been- pandemic, snowpocalypse, layoffs, new job, new equipment, learning curves, and lots of comic conversations! For the first episode of our second season I share some MSCA member news, what art projects I've been working on recently, some of the podcasts I listen to, and my thoughts on self-publishing and some of the comics industry publisher news I've heard about on the interwebs. Lots of "The Ghost With The Most" on this episode in celebration of mine and Nicki's 10th wedding anniversary this month. I proposed to Nicki at the Phoenix Comic Con's art show way back when I was emceeing their art show as Beetlejuice...and she said, "Yes."...well, technically she shook her head but that counts- I had witnesses! Episode 28 - "Play It Forward"
Show Notes: This episode is about "paying it forward" and some of the posts I recently ran across in the "I CREATE COMIC BOOKS" Facebook group and my responses to them. I've gotten a lot of help from others over the years, and I hope that this podcast helps anyone wanting to learn more about creating comics, and the business of promoting them. I also talk a bit about what I've been up to art-wise (mostly drawing sketchcards), and touch on some of my art-anxiety, drawing-depression, professional-jealousy, and impostor-syndrome experiences.
Stay safe, stay tooned- and please share with others..!
BTW: If you'd like to be a part of the show or have your comics project, event, or podcast featured on a future episode please give me a yell. You can contact me at: podcast(at)drawingfunny(dot)com

Show Notes: This episode Nicki and I catch up with one of our favorite writers, and humans- John Ostrander. We met "Uncle John" several years back at MidSouthCon and immediately became friends. He's a legendary comics creator who's worked for Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse, Image, Valiant, as well as First Comics- which was his first comics gig. He's been a playwright, director, actor- and almost a priest..! Just before Covid struck he filmed a cameo scene as Dr. Fitzgibbon for the upcoming "The Suicide Squad" movie by James Gunn, which will be released in theaters and HBO Max on August 6, 2021.

Episode 25 - "Heroineburgh"
Show Notes: "HEROINEBURGH" is a live-action episodic video series and a comic book series (and created in that order). The stories are about a universe of superpowered females in a fantastical version of Pittsburgh. It's adventure, drama, comedy and romance, all in the finest spandex and capes, and the comic book art is classic Bronze Age- with some modern computer coloring. The videos are available for download from their website- Heroineburgh.com, and the comics are on sale in over 150 stores nationwide and at their many comic con and comic shop appearances. In this episode I talk with the mysterious Mr. H about the world of HEROINEBURGH, creating comics and shooting video in the Steel City, plus swap some stories about his connection to the Memphis music scene. So hop on the bus, Gus- and make a new plan to take a trip to Heroineburgh...by way of Memphis.

Show Notes: This episode is one of my shorter ones, and for this mini-sode my cats Jarael and Lena decided to visit me in the Batcave while I worked. I recently got in a new mic and wanted to give it a test drive. I figured while I was recording I could share some MSCA news and let you know what Nicki and I have been up to lately. Thanks to Peter Rios for the shout-out on his "The Daily Rios" podcast. He mentions my show on TDR Ep. 503 during his conversation with Dave Dwonch, as well as playing my "Drawing Funny" promo spot- thanks, Peter! Winston Gambro is a graphic designer by day, and comic creator by night. He’s created the comedy webtoon "Gumshoe City", which has detective Meatball Matthews journeying out of his element when his best friend disappears and leaves behind a dead body; his online cyberpunk mystery "Overflow", that has Ava Lee, a private detective attempting to prove her brother didn't commit a war crime and possibly stop the end of the world; and his anthology comic series "Rex Radley: Boy Adventurer", an all ages book that was inspired by every awesome cartoon made to sell toys (and was successfully backed by two Kickstarter campaigns). Episode 21 - "Con Survival Guide"
Show Notes: Since many folks are heading to cons again or are gearing up to, I thought I'd share some thoughts on setting up at and/or attending conventions. I've been doing it off and on since the early '90s, as an attendee, artist guest, volunteer, con staff, organizer- at one time doing a con a month or every other month..! I've stopped setting up as an artist/guest or putting on shows, but still love attending cons. There's lots more I could have put into this episode, but figured this one was long enough at 45min. Plus, I remembered a few extras after I had edited it..D'oh! So, maybe I'll do a follow up episode after attending a few post-pandemic events. If you'd like more info on conventions and portfolio reviews, or see some of the cons and events I've attended be sure to check out my LinWorkman.com art blog and HaveGeekWillTravel.com travel blog (lots of posts in the archives). I recorded an interview with Marvin Wynn, writer of "The Edge" comic, and we discussed cons in that episode. I'm working on editing and uploading it. If you've got advice or tips on surviving a con shoot me an email- podcast (at) drawingfunny (dot) com. Looking at bringing some show/event organizers on the show to see what info/advice they can share on the subject. Until then, stay tooned!

Show Notes: I did another interview with my live-in tech support person- my wife, Nicki Workman. We talked about what it's like to live with an artist like me- the pros and cons, and being a spouse of a pro at cons. During our conversation she shared some of her experiences of dealing with me and other artists/creators, her thoughts on making a marriage work (so far so good for us!), as well as dropping some useful business knowledge for artists and those who live and/or work with one. Nicki's other Drawing Funny episodes are Episode 17 – “I.T. Phone Home”, Episode 9 – “Nicki’s Mouse Report” and a Flashback Friday interview at the 2018 DonnieCon on Episode 4 – “Drawn Of The Dead”. I also discuss some of the promotions I've done in the past, and try to share what to do (or not do) when promoting yourself and/or project. Don't die from exposure or get arrested for exposing yourself to others- learn from my mistakes and learn how to judge what's good or bad exposure for you.

Episode 18 - "Little Deaths" With David Doub
Show Notes: On this episode I talk to Little Deaths creator and Texas transplant - David Doub. David is the founder of Dusk Comics. His numerous publications include Dusk, Miss Tilney, Forever, Mystery Masque, and the upcoming Little Deaths. According to the interwebs, "La petite mort" (the little death), is an expression which means "the brief loss or weakening of consciousness" and in modern usage refers specifically to "the sensation of post orgasm as likened to death." The term "la petite mort" does not always apply to sexual experiences. It can also be used to describe a weakening or loss of consciousness, specifically in sleep, or when some undesired thing has happened to a person and has affected them so much that "a part of them dies inside." The Little Deaths we’ll be investigating today is a 30 page full color historical fantasy adventure comic, written by David Doub and featuring art by Andrew Herman and Paul Maitland. It's based on the French historical figure Julie d’Aubigny (also known as known as Mademoiselle Maupin or La Maupin) who lived A LOT from (1670–1707). She was a duelist, popular opera singer, and apparently was not only known to dress like a man, but could kick the crap out of them in duels, too. The Kickstarter campaign for this project will launch Monday, March 15th, 2021 and will have with a spectacular cast of guest artists for special perks.

Show Notes: Greetings, listeners! While doing a test flight on Zoom to try and work out some issues I've been having, I hit the record button and did an interview with my live-in tech support person- my wife, Nicki Workman. We talk toons, tech, podcasts, her experiences with backing crowdfunding as a fan, her comics origin stories, her going back to school while working from home- and how we met thanks to Darth Vader and Star Wars. I also mention some Mid-South Cartoonists Association news and give you the details for our first "Drawing Funny" contest (listen to win MSCA Zines, Samurai tee by me, and some MSCA and Drawing Funny swag). We discuss his early work at gaming companies and with Action Lab Comics, and his current Kickstarter for his graphic novel- "Athena Voltaire and the Terror on the Orient Express".
There were some technical difficulties getting this episode together, and there's slight occasional buzzing here and there- but lots of great info and advice from Steve on self-publishing comics and running successful Kickstarter campaigns. Thanks for listening- hope you enjoy!
From Steve's Kickstarter campaign page:
An all-new 120 page graphic novel starring globetrotting aviatrix Athena Voltaire!
"Athena Voltaire and the Terror on the Orient Express" finds the heroine reconnecting with an old friend during a personal trip on the famed train line. When an old foe sets a plan in motion, the voyage turns deadly, as Athena must find the source of horrific slayings that are terrorizing the passengers! Obviously, someone has to do something...
Planned for issues 9–12 of the Action Lab Athena Voltaire ongoing series.

Episode 14 - "The Hostage" with Sal Abbinanti
Show Notes: I talk toons and kickstarting art projects with Sal "Uncle Sal" Abbinanti. We discuss his early work in advertising, self-publishing comics, representing other artists, and his first ever Kickstarter for his first ever graphic novel- "The Hostage".
From his Kickstarter campaign page:
By day, Sal Abbinanti is the art rep for comic book superstars Alex Ross and Bill Sienkiewicz, but by night he, too, is an artist. For more than two decades, the Chicago native has been obsessed with creating a graphic novel inspired by a visit he made to Brazil when he was in his early 20’s. Now, Abbinanti is launching a Kickstarter campaign for his dream project, a 115-page full-color original graphic novel set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro titled THE HOSTAGE.
“When I was 25, I spent six months living in Rio de Janeiro,” said Abbinanti. “I was a starry eyed, full of shit college kid who went there for a Brazilian vacation of samba, nightlife, and beaches. To see the level of poverty, suffering, and death in Rio de Janeiro was eye opening. I will never forget it. THE HOSTAGE is my tribute to the amazing country and especially to the kids living in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.”
Loosely inspired by the culture and religions of Brazil like the Umbanda and the Candomblé, Abbinanti has been building the world of THE HOSTAGE in his studio for over 10 years—sketching characters, panels, and scripting pages. Abbinanti’s unique art style and vibrant color choices create a spellbinding effect. THE HOSTAGE tells the story of a group of street kids who are abandoned by society. Dying every day from poverty and gang violence, the kids join together and summon a mystical spirit—THE HOSTAGE—who will protect them and avenge the deaths of their friends.
THE HOSTAGE Kickstarter campaign includes limited edition lithographs from Alex Ross, Bill Sienkiewicz, Jeffrey Alan Love, Sanjulián, Geof Darrow, and Eric Powell, as well as tiers with original sketch cards, postcards, and bookmarks by Abbinanti.
The crowdfunding campaign is live now and concludes on February 25th, with pledge tiers ranging from a digital edition available in both English and Portuguese (translated by Kelsey Trotta), to The Complete HOSTAGE Package, which includes an 11x17 original drawing by Sal Abbinanti and a complete set of lithographs by all guest artists.

Episode 13 - "Luck Of The Draw"
Show Notes: Had a some recording issues during the MSCA Zoom call on Groundhog's Day, so this time I'm solo again- and unfortunately not $1,000,000,000 richer. I announce the details for our first "Drawing Funny" contest (listen to win MSCA Zines, Samurai tee by me, and some MSCA and Drawing Funny swag), give a few art tips, and I discuss some of what I've learned from my days of self-publishing comics. Regrets, yeah- I've had a few, and few enough to mention here on this episode. There's also info on a couple of upcoming guests for this coming week and their projects- artist/writer/art-rep/Captain Marvel Sal "Uncle Sal" Abbinanti, and writer/letterer/man on the move Dave Dwonch. Links to their Kickstater campaigns are below. I hope you're staying safe, staying warm, and staying tooned!

Show Notes: This episode I've got a few reviews and reading recommendations for you- "WINK" by Rob Harrell, "The Impending Blindness Of Billie Scott" by Zoe Thorogood, and the NCSFEST are my recommendations- but I also review "Hit-Girl In HOLLYWOOD" by Kevin Smith (and don't really recommend it so much). I also have some MSCA news, say goodbye to some local Memphis talents- George Hunt, Anthony Biggers, and Chris Jarman, and say good riddance to 2020. Episode 11 - "Batman VS Superking"
Show Notes: We're gonna start this new year with a trip back to the past in this "Flashback Friday" episode. Originally recorded for the Rogues Radio Podcast at the 2018 Memphis Comic Expo (AKA "DonnieCon"). I talk with the Bluff City Batman (James Fyke), wrestling historian and author Mark James, and wrestling legend Jerry "The King" Lawler. We discuss Memphis wrasslin', comics, art, food, heart-attacks, and Batmobiles. Lots of Memphis memories are recalled. Unfortunately, Jerry's friend Jim Blake (who you hear mentioned in this episode) passed away October 1, 2020- he was 75 years old. Jim was a local business owner and heavily involved in underground music and art in the 60's, 70's and into the 80's. He was an avid comic book fan and could be seen at local comic shops and conventions. R.I.P., Jim.

Episode 10 - "PROcrastination"
Show Notes: This is the Mid-South Cartoonists Association's December Monthly Zoom Meeting- well, most of it. We talk toons, discuss what's happening around the M-town, swap ideas on self-promotion/increasing eyes on our artwork, and how to make money with it and commissions during a time with no (or few) in person conventions. The monthly video calls happen on the first Tuesday of each month, and honestly with everything that's been keeping me busy since this one was recorded it now qualifies as a "Flashback Friday" episode..! You can find website and social media links for many of our MSCA members on the group's Members Directory page and the "Winter" zine issue is now available for purchase in local Memphis area comic shops. Happy Holidays- stay safe, stay warm, and stay tooned!

Episode 8 - "The Janimal"
Show Notes: The Janimal is a Jersey tomato roasting in the Arizona sun. A graduate of the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University (NJ), he now resides in Northern Arizona with his family and two cats. He has exhibited at comic conventions from Phoenix Fan Fusion to New York Comic Con and serves as the acting president of the Northern Arizona Cartoonist Association (NAZCA). His fun and cartoony style has a great retro feel and translates easily to the drawing demo classes that have been a staple at Verde Valley libraries and LibCons over the past five years.
His work can be seen on Facebook (The Janimal Draws), Instagram (@thejanimaldraws) and Twitter (@janimaltweets).
