Medicinal Mushrooms with Martin Powell
The term 'Medicinal Mushrooms' likely conjures images of psychedelic experiences. However, almost all mushrooms can have profound effects on our physical bodies and states of wellbeing.
Biochemist and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, Martin Powell, is a leading authority on the medicinal properties of mushrooms. In his eyes, all mushrooms are magic and have to the potential to heal. This week he shares how almost all mushrooms can act as immune system modulators. Indeed, many mushrooms contain compounds that can nurture the gut and the microbiome. Some can even regulate cholesterol.
Martin helps lift the confusion by describing the most common species seen in health food stores. But as Martin emphasises, health should not come in a bottle. His take home advice is eat more mushrooms, but cook them first!

Chefs in Schools with Nicole Pisani
Any conversation about health has to start with childhood. Food choices and nutritional habits formed in childhood dictate our relationship with food. The UK has a school meal programme for children that has come under scrutiny in the past.
Nicole Pisani was a former head chef of a leading London restaurant. She gave up that role to engage in helping future generations of children eat well and develop healthy food habits. She co-founded the charity, 'Chefs in Schools' to inspire change in school food by freely sharing knowledge of what works well, both in kitchens and classrooms, to schools across the country. A central part of the model is also providing education and hands on experience for the children. This encompasses growing, harvesting, preparing and eating food as a holistic approach.
With the motto, 'Better is Possible' Chefs in Schools provides various models from training existing teams to installing head chefs and whole school transformations. Children and their parents/guardians are involved in an ongoing conversation and shared experiences with food. Education is key and school curricula include cooking lessons and learning about food and nutrition.
The Chefs in Schools model is currently in 20 schools in London. The aim is to extend the model beyond London and one day have every school in the UK providing education and great healthy food for our children. The charity provides a charter that anyone can download, sign and implement. Chefs in Schools is a great initiative and really worthy of support!

The Healing Connection to Earth with Dr Laura Koniver MD
Every cell in your body is electric. Direct contact with the earth neutralises the body to the Earth's potential and grounds us. This process is instantaneous and scientifically proven to benefit our health. And yet, human beings can go through decades without ever connecting to the earth.
Laura Koniver MD is a staunch advocate of grounding. This week she joins me to share her valuable knowledge on the many health benefits of grounding. She challenges the medical community's readiness to diagnose using the electrical systems of the body, but refusal to consider it a treatment modality.
Laura also discusses the importance of shielding as well as grounding. We discuss the impact of grounding on physiology and psychology in the modern urban world. Laura also provides easy tips to ground, even in a concrete jungle. She also shares the best way to help our children get grounded.
As Laura points out, we spend our lives trying the get the earth into our bodies through eating, breathing and meditating. But, the easiest way to achieve that is simply by touching the earth.

Yang Sheng, the Chinese Art of Self-Healing with Katie Brindle
If you think that herbs and acupuncture are all that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has to offer, you are very mistaken. The essence of TCM is indeed to 'nourish life' or Yang Sheng. Yang Sheng is the self-care part of TCM and is a self-healing system. The system comprises simple but powerful habits and lifestyle techniques that you can perform yourself. Today's guest, Katie Brindle, calls this gaining 'Mastery over your Health'.
Katie is a fully qualified TCM practitioner. She is passionate about bringing the powerful, yet little known, self-healing properties of Yang Sheng to a western audience. She developed a methodology known as the Hayo'u method, which distils this philosophy into easy and enjoyable steps.
Her method starts with simple, quick techniques to rescue and restore a stressed body and nervous system back to balance. Part of her method uses a ritual known as Gua Sha. This 'press-stroking' with a jade tool not only restores inner wellbeing, but also leads to radiant, youthful looking skin. Little wonder this has taken the beauty industry by storm!
Katie leads us through the layers of TCM to address healing of the mind, body and soul. Viewing herself as a gate keeper to deeper levels of healing, Katie openly shares her knowledge and supports her clients on their way to health, wellness and vitality.

CBD - Hype or Help with Jade Proudman
CBD is the buzz word of the moment. But does it really help support health and wellbeing or is it commercial hype? Since the discovery of the body's own endocannabinoid system in the late 90's, we now understand the mechanism of action for plant cannabinoids. This lends credence to the beneficial effects reported for CBD being a real thing.
This week, Jade Proudman joins me to share her journey back to a state of health thanks to CBD. Following her positive experience, Jade and her husband launched a company in 2016 to bring safe, legal and effective CBD to a wider audience.
She explains what CBD is and how it is thought to work. We clear up any confusion around CBD as opposed to medical cannabis. She also clarifies the difference between CBD isolates and whole plant extracts. Jade is very active in the CBD world, working together with organisations to establish guidelines that ensure CBD products are safe, effective and ethical.
Her ethos is to provide a wrap around service helping consumers access the right information for their specific needs and providing high quality products. Jade emphasises that CBD is not a cure, and neither is it a medicinal product. Rather, it is an effective and safe supplement to support health and wellbeing.

What a Relief! I have ADHD with Kassandra and Tatiana
An estimated 85% of adult women with ADHD go undiagnosed. ADHD in women often presents differently than in men. Moreover, women suffer significantly more from the emotional effects of the disorder. Getting a diagnosis is the first step in turning a potentially life-wrecking disorder into a life of fulfilment, happiness and success.
This week, my daughter, Kassandra, and I co-host this episode on adult ADHD. Both diagnosed recently, we are at the beginning of our ADHD journey. We discuss the immense relief a diagnosis brings. We describe some of the common and less common symptoms seen particularly in women. We discuss some of the emotional impact of having ADHD and why ADHD often comes along with other disorders. We debunk some myths and talk about the sunny sides of ADHD. Our aim is to raise awareness, especially in women. We hope that sharing our story helps you find out you're not lazy, flakey and stupid, you might just have ADHD. And once you know that, you can start to live a life you love.

Sick and Tired - Fatigue Disorders with Alex Howard
Do you have energy for your day when you get out of bed? Increasing numbers of people are far more tired than they should be. Sadly many of them go on to develop a chronic fatigue disorder like CFS/ME and fibromyalgia. These conditions seriously impact our quality of life and can suck the joy out of living.
Alex Howard had a seven year journey with ME. Taking his recovery into his own hands he learned, explored and tried almost everything. He translated all that he had learned into a book and founded the Optimal Health Clinic to address treating fatigue disorders holistically with an integrative approach. Alex shares his wisdom on the current theories and his personal and professional experience on the causes of fatigue disorders. We discuss the relevance of adrenal fatigue in the context of being a symptom rather than a cause. Alex also shares the myriad of factors that determine treatment options. He emphasis is on understanding that the most recent or most likely candidate for the illness is almost always just the last link in a chain of factors. Each of these factors has to be addressed to achieve success in healing.
Alex emphasises the importance of understanding that this is a journey. The road can be challenging and arduous at times, but there is much that can be achieved with the right treatment and support, emotionally, physically and psychologically. Most importantly, Alex urges people to never be afraid to ask for help.

Out of Body Experiences with Jade Shaw
Is consciousness a creation of and limited to the brain? Phenomena such as Out of Body Experiences (OBEs) would suggest otherwise. Moreover, such experiences are often transformational and can change people lives. Jade Shaw is fascinated by precisely this feature of OBEs and has dedicated her life to exploring, teaching and researching their effects. She relates her own experience that launched her new career and the insights that she gained. Beyond that, she discusses the differences between OBEs, lucid dreaming and near death experiences. Jade shares some compelling evidence that OBEs are an extension of consciousness beyond the boundaries of the body. Furthermore, we discuss how OBEs are a tool for transformation, especially for overcoming limitations and fear. Jade covers some techniques to initiate them and the best way to ensure safe, exciting travels!

Telomeres Tell Tales with Elissa Epel PhD
Are you living a telomere-friendly lifestyle? Telomere length is a measure of longevity and predisposition for degenerative disease. The good news is that we can help protect our telomeres by the way we choose to live our lives. In this week's episode, Elissa Epel, co author of 'The Telomere Effect', shares her groundbreaking research on the effects of stress and psychology on telomere length. She describes what is detrimental to our telomeres, but also all the positive things we can do to protect and, indeed, lengthen them. We talk about the importance of maternal physical and psychological health and the role it plays in the telomere length of the offspring. A topic that has huge socioeconomic and psychosocial implications. Elissa lets us in on her current research on various methods to harness the power of positive stress, such as Wim Hoff breathing techniques. The Spiritual Nature of Healing with Igor Kufayev
Western medicine views disease and illness as a dysfunction of the the component parts and systems that make up our physiology. Eastern traditions take a different view and include the expression of creative intelligence or consciousness in the manifestation of disease. Igor Kufayev is a teacher of Advaita Trantra and, in this first of two conversations, he takes us on an in-depth journey to try and understand the roles of different levels in health and disease. These levels comprise the gross or physical level, the subtle or neuronal flow and the causal or karmic level. He elegantly describes the role of the causal, karmic level in creating disease. He shares his wisdom on karma, and how there are also different currents of karma that act on us in ways we can and cannot control. He discusses the importance of self responsibility and living consciously and how we can direct certain karmic currents in this way. He discusses the importance of understanding the source and treatment of disease. In a rather controversial stance, he challenges the desire to always intervene or seek miracle cures as a potential bypass and missed opportunity to bring about transformation. In this fascinating and deep look at the spiritual nature of health, we can truly appreciate that good health is not simply a matter of caring for the body and mind, but rather a matter of the expression of consciousness.

The Brain's Immune System, Alzheimer's and Inflammation with Professor Hugh Perry
Your immune system and your brain communicate. We now know that the brain also has it's own immune system in the form of microglia cells. Professor Hugh Perry has studied microglia cells since the 1980's. In this fact filled episode, he eloquently describes the microglia cells, how they move from a resting to activated state and their role and function as the immune cells of the brain. Using Alzheimer's disease as an example, he discusses the role of microglia and the attempts to modulate these cells for therapeutic value. He also details how the immune system communicates with the brain in health and disease. The role of systemic inflammation in developing Alzheimer's is also a topic and what we can do to support our microglia and brain health.

Elder not Older with Tatiana Kassessinoff PhD
Why do we no longer respect and value our elders? Today's youth obsessed culture has forced us to pursue youthfulness at all costs and deny ageing. In this week's solo episode, I challenge this paradigm and explore our perceptions that ageing is a slow path to disease, decrepitude and dementia. I explore how ageing has it's positive aspects and that elders have a valuable role to play in society. The responsibility lies in our hands to learn how our minds and bodies can be cared for to maximise our chances of living healthy for longer. By remaining healthy, active and fully engaged in life, we can shift the profile of ageing and change the perspectives of the older adult into that of an elder. Only by educating ourselves can we take back control of our healthcare and learn to age gracefully, but vibrantly.

The Future of Healthcare - Social Prescribing with Dr Michael Dixon LVO OBE
The incidence of chronic disease is rising rapidly. Simultaneously, the costs of healthcare are also rising and are not sustainable. In addition, the medical outcomes for many conditions are less than satisfactory. Something is clearly not working. Fortunately, a paradigm shift in the approach to healthcare is taking place as the UK government has announced a program of Universal Social Prescribing within the National Health Service. Instrumental in this program is my guest, Dr Michael Dixon, the National Clinical Lead for Social Prescription (NHS England). In this episode he describes the need for a medicine that is more than pills and procedures. He describes how social prescription takes a holistic view of patients and supports them in making lifestyle changes, solving life challenges and integration into social networks. Initial results have shown great promise in improving the physical, emotional and mental health of patients while saving costs. Michael strongly believes that social prescribing is the way forward for medicine that not only takes care of the patient, but may help build better and stronger communities. It is a huge step in changing a disease care system into a healthcare system.

Modern life is more challenging than ever before. He shares his insights into the implications of resilience for effective complementary therapies and the practitioners themselves. Addressing Addiction with Lucy and Alex da Silva
What is addiction really? In this episode Lucy and Alex da Silva join me to discuss their own views in this subject based on personal experience and that of their clients. An addiction therapist and life coach, Lucy and Alex share their insights into the emotional nature of addiction. We discuss to what extent trauma and the inability to process negative emotion lie at the heart of addictive behaviour. Is addiction even a thing, or simply a human mechanism to change the way we feel that can become chronic and imbedded as patterns of behaviour. Recovery is possible and Lucy and Alex highlight the merits of the twelve step programme and their own support in terms of the therapy and coaching they offer. Addiction is not a moral weakness, but rather the inability to deal with the emotional landscape. Luckily, help is available.

Vedic meditation is the world's most ancient form of this practice, and Jillian Lavender co-director of the London (and New York) Meditation Centre joins me today to share her wisdom and expertise. A meditation teacher since 2003, Jillian explains the specific aspects of Vedic meditation and how it differs from other forms. Epilepsy and the Ketogenic Diet with Emma Williams MBE
Epilepsy affects at least 300,000 people in the UK - just over 60,000 of these people are children under the age of 16 (Epilepsy Society). Emma Williams MBE is the founder and CEO of Matthew's Friends, a non profit organisation she set up to help families of adults and children with epilepsy follow medical ketogenic diets. Following her own experience with her son, Matthew, she is a staunch advocate and activist to allow those affected by epilepsy have access to this diet and potentially alleviate their symptoms. She discusses the principles of the diet and the evidence that it can help. We talk about the types of patients that the diet can help, why it should be medically supervised and its application in adults. Emma also describes the Matthew's Friends organisation including the training programmes offered to health professionals. Emma's aim is to allow everybody access to the diet who could benefit from it, train professionals to implement the diet, and to further research into which other conditions could be helped.

Gender Identity with Michelle Bridgman
An increasing number of people are experiencing a gender identity that does not wholly correlate with the gender they were assigned at birth. This has led to the field of Gender Identity in psychotherapy and new ways to support people suffering from gender dysphoria or being very unhappy with their assigned gender. This is a complicated subject that is eloquently addressed by this week's guest, Michelle Bridgman. Shelley is a psychotherapist, a professional speaker and author. She is in the process of completing her doctorate in psychotherapy and is a regular communicator on gender identity issues in the media. In this episode we discuss the 'gender spectrum' the problems that arise for some people and the role of therapy in the various areas of need that people experience in dealing with this issue. In this candid and inspirational conversation, Shelley describes how `gender is just a space suit we walk around in' and that learning to know and be who we really are is at the root of all happiness. Shelley aims to encourage well trained and talented therapists to help guide people to a place where there understand their beliefs and discover who they want to be and which expression of gender identity is right for them. Shelley hopes that people will become empowered to be who they really are and thus act as agents for change in creating a more tolerant world accepting of diversity.

The Role of the Mind in Infertility with Andrea Yearsley
Around 1 in 7 couples may have difficulty conceiving. This is approximately 3.5 million people in the UK (NHS). Andrea Yearsley specialises in helping women maximise their fertility, help them have a baby naturally or with IVF, and help women carry babies to full term. After eight years of experiencing the infertility journey herself, Andrea was lucky to have two beautiful daughters, but knew there was a better way to navigate this journey. A successful TV producer for 15 years, she retrained as a Rapid Transformational Therapist with Marisa Peer. She set up Pebble Fertility and has been helping women get pregnant ever since. She describes the role of mindset in fertility and how the impact of failed IVF attempts can seriously impact future attempts. We discuss the role of stress on hormonal balance and how this can affect fertility. Sometimes mental blocks or limiting beliefs can prevent fertility and Andrea discusses some examples and how her method can identify, turn around and rewire the mind with new beliefs that support fertility. Andrea's compassionate yet pragmatic approach is clearly a boon to her clients and she is now extending her reach with an online community to help and advise women during this challenging time.
