Lore and Legend : Tales From Our Mythic PastApr 21, 2022

Why The Sea Is Salt · With Kirsten Millikin
We’re hearing a story today from Kirsten Millikin, a Scottish storyteller specialising in myths, legends and folktales from Norse and Celtic nations.
Recently Kirsten worked alongside another storyteller to create Traces of HER: A Goddess Story Project, an evening of stories that explore the traces of the divine feminine in myths, legends and folk and fairy tales, and asking what female archetypes have to teach us about solutions to the environmental and social crises that afflict us today. Through folklore, mythology and heritage, Kirstin explores Stories of hope, stories for healing and stories that speak to the human heart.
We’ll explores all of these topics and more with Kirsten soon, but first, Kirsten is going to tell us the Norse story of ‘Why The Sea Is Salt’.
If you want to follow Kirsten’s work, you can follow her and Catriona as performance duo The Hedge Sisters through their page on Facebook. The link is there for you to follow in the episode show notes: https://www.facebook.com/Thehedgesisters

Saints & Witches · With Suzanne & Jake Tumnus
Today on the podcast I’m joined by Suzanne & Jake Tumnus, a bardic storytelling duo who blend stories and music to take you to a place where dragons fly, giants comb their beards and other worldly folk dance with mortals. Singing songs and telling stories from a repertoire of traditional pieces and their own compositions, Suzanne and Jake find their inspiration in the folktales, legends and songs of Britain and the wild hills of South Shropshire. Their show ‘Saints & Witches’, which you are about to hear, tells the stories of five magical women woven together beautifully with music and song, forming a journey through the seasons, a sequence of stories that collapse a year into a day; into a moment, and into the form of a hare.
You can find out more about Suzanne & Jake’s storytelling, events, gigs and projects on their website, Cranesfield Bardic Arts, at http://www.cranesfieldbardicarts.co.uk/ and also through their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SuzanneandJakeTumnus.

Here is Maria Credali telling her version of the story of ‘The Devil In A Nut’.

Carys Nant Carfan · With Tamar Williams
Today we’re talking to storyteller Tamar Williams, who tells the tale of Carys Nant Carfan. Tamar is a bilingual storyteller, telling stories in Welsh and English. She grew up hearing the myths and legends told of in Mabinogion, but only much later was she introduced to the world of storytelling as a contemporary performance art form. In 2013 she won the National Storyteller of the Year competition, launching her into a career as a storyteller. Our conversation explored Tamar’s own journey from theatre and acting into the world of professional storytelling, how the stories she tells have changed and evolved, and the emerging sense of purpose in her role as a storyteller. We also talk about how her work confronts the representation of women in myth and folk stories, and how storytellers can best address the problems that are throw up for modern tellers and audiences in our use of traditional material.

Good Stories for Hard Times - The Modern Decameron
In Boccaccio's 14th century story collection, ‘the Decameron’, a group of friends hunkered down in a villa to wait out the plague. They passed the time by telling stories. Ten characters told a story each over ten days, with one person acting as story monarch for that day. To bring some light to these similarly lurgy-ridden times, medievalist Daisy Black has co-ordinated a modern Decameron of tales. Storytellers old and new from across the world have united to share their tales over a period of ten days.
Ten days of ten stories. A hundred messages of hope and solidarity.
The stories will be uploaded on Facebook and Youtube.

Steel City Tales · With Simon Heywood
Simon Heywood shares the tales of a ghoulish Barghest that stalked Lore & Legend's home city of Sheffield (the UK's 'Steel City'), and a blind fiddler with a puzzling request. Rick interviews Simon about his career as a lecturer and storyteller, and the rich roots of storytelling in local history and folk culture around the world. Plus, hear Yorkshire folk singer Ray Hearne perform the political protest songs of the eighteenth-century Sheffield filecutter and ballad singer Joseph Mather!
