How to Deconstruct the Ego

If you bring all your attention fully present into this moment, what is your actual experience of the moment? And who or what is aware of the experience? When no thoughts are present in the moment, what is here? You may answer, "I am here. I am aware." But who or what exactly is that 'I' which is aware? Is it aware of itself? During self-enquiry like this it is very common for the conceptual self (ego) to experience confusion or fear. That is because a shift in identity is taking place, from identification with an imaginary self-image, to identification with the True self (pure consciousness). This confusion or fear doesn't need to be fixed or elimated. By simply resting the attention as the witness of the experience it dissolves and quietens by itself with time. There is in fact no ego to be dissolved. There are only thoughts and unconscious patternings and conditionings acting out. By simply resting the attention as that which is aware and witnessing the present moment, higher consciousness infuses the system and old unconscious structures and imprints unwind and release naturally and effortlessly. It must be noted that the aim is not to reach an end point where the ego has dissolved, but to discover in this moment right now the Truth of who you are beyond the egoic / conceptual self: pure, naked Awareness. What Happens When You Open to Stillness

When you sit in presence and open to the stillness that's here in this moment you may experience a feeling of peace. However, sooner or later, unprocessed emotions and energies that have been lurking under the surface will bubble up to the surface of your experience. This is a good thing! It means that your meditation practice is working. Higher consciousness draws out the unconscious beliefs and conditionings from your system on the level of the mind, physical and also energetic body. This healing and integration process can be an uncomfortable experience, and the discomfort is usually accompanied by a pull to disassociate from the experience. However, this is the moment when you must remain deeply anchored in Being. Don't move. Remain fully present as the witness of the experience, totally and completely allowing the body to feel whatever it feels. When applied with absolute dedication this practice will bring about profound transformation on the level of form and a deep sense of lasting peace and joy.

How to Heal Past Emotions Held in the Body

Our bodies hold unprocessed emotions from painful past experiences that we weren't able to fully process in the moment. These unprocessed emotions are stored in the body as blocked energies and can feel like uncomfortable sensations, such as tightness, contractions and heaviness. If you meditate and practice presence, your system will begin to process these old emotions by bringing them up to the surface so that they can be consciously felt and release. At this point many people give up their practice, thinking that they're doing their meditation wrong. Remember: if you feel discomfort in your meditation then it's working! Follow this simple 5 step formula to heal the past emotions held in your body: 1. Totally disidentify from the story of 'me' and rest your attention as the witness of the experience. Observe any thoughts that appear but do not give any interest in their content. 2. Adopt an attitude of pure positivity. I'm grateful for this experience! 3. Gently enquire into where the emotion / sensation is felt in the body. 4. Consciously allow your body to totally and completely feel the sensation. Surrender FULLY to it. 5. Be unconditional with the process. Don't wait for the emotion to disappear, just hold it in pure unconditional love for as long as it remains and use the experience to deepen into presence. Whenever you recognise that the system is triggered, very gently bring all your attention fully present into this moment. Become aware of your body breathing, observe your thoughts, and notice the background stillness. Rest your attention as the witness of the moment and don't give interest to any thought that appears, simply remain still as the neutral witness. Then, with an impersonal attitude of gently curiosity enquire into the experience of the body.
How does the body feel right now? What emotions are present? Then take away the labels and look at what the actual sensation in the body feels like. Is it a tightness? A contraction? A heaviness? Where exactly in the body is this sensation? Bring your attention so close to the sensation that you're no longer observing it as an outsider, but one with it, feeling it from within. Totally and completely surrender to the sensation and fully allow the body to feel however it feels, without any agenda to change it, fix it, heal it or get rid of it. This unconditional love and acceptance is the paradoxical key for healing and integration of the emotion.

The Fire of Truth
Many times the mind tries to figure out how to 'do' spiritual awakening. However awakening is not something that can be done. It is the opposite of doing. It is a total and absolute surrender to the Divine. In this surrender the ego structures crack open and unprocessed emotions and energies bubble up to be processed. Still there is nothing to do. All that is required is to remain fully present in the now and allow Grace to transmute darkness into light, unconsciousness into consciousness. Did you ever argue with reality only to look back later in life and see that that occurance was the best thing that happened? There is a greater intelligence supporting, navigating and guiding our life. When this is understood there is a desire and willingness to surrender one's life to that divine intelligence, and it is with that surrender that peace is found. Most people are conditioned to habitually navigate life by perceiving reality through a filter of a conceptual self. This self attempts to control reality in order to minimize suffering and maximize the enhancement of its own sense of conceptual worth (either positive or negative), and this is done by manipulations, strategies, unconscious patternings and coping mechanisms. When the attention is focused in this delusional way it leads to suffering. By becoming aware of the conceptual self and the ways in which it affects one's behaviors it is possible to free oneself from this grip of egoic suffering and discover lasting freedom and peace. The fastest and most effective way to end this suffering is to give up all interest in material forms and experiences and give ALL one's interest to the unseen Divine pure consciousness. This consciousness is not a concept, idea or belief system. It is known through direct experience by the felt sense and in order to know it one must learn how to shift the focus of one's attention. This is done by stopping all effort to DO anything and becoming very still, then enquiring into what is here and aware of being aware in the present moment? That which is aware is not a thought, image, feeling or experience. It never moves or changes. It is eternal, unseen and beyond time and space. When you give all your attention to this, your whole system opens up to allow the Divine itself to penetrate through your being and infuse every aspect of your life with peace and unconditional Love. Awakening to one's true nature as pure consciousness marks the beginning of a profound healing and integration process. This process involves the release of outdated beliefs and conditionings, as well as unprocessed emotions that are held in the system. When one opens to higher consciousness, anything in the system which is not in alignment with that will bubble up to be processed and released. This is a good thing! It is important to be vigilant with one's practice in order not to fall into the trap of identifying with a mental agenda to perfect the human form. This agenda can appear as a desire to heal or release emotions, energies or contractions from the body and a subtle waiting to reach a point in the future when the process is complete. However, any kind of agenda prevents the healing and integration process from happening because agendas are a form of conceptual identification which block the flow of divine intelligence. The magic ingredient for the most powerful healing to take place effortlessly is total and complete surrender. This means disidentification from all forms, concepts and experiences and the embodiment of a state of pure Being, absolute allowing. This is unconditional love, and ultimately this is what you are.

How To Heal Unprocessed Emotions and Energies Held in The Body

The process can be summed up in 3 simple steps: 1. Bring your attention fully present into the now. 2. Disidentify from the conceptual self. Enquire, 'who or what am I?' This will lead to the recognition that 'I' am Awareness, (not the body, mind or any experience). Don't give attention to or identify with any thought. 3. Consciously feel the sensations in the body, without any agenda, and without labelling the experience or attaching any story to it. Totally and completely accept the experience as it is. Life on the external plane is challenging. Whether one recognizes one's true nature beyond the conditioned mind or not, it is inevitable that challenges will appear, whether in the form of relationships, finances, health, natural disasters or something else.
If when the challenges appear you struggle and fight against them mentally this creates resistance, which produces negative emotions in the system and leads to suffering. If however, you adopt an attitude of pure positivity, the challenges that life brings can serve as gateways to deepening into presence and bringing you closer to the divine itself.

Free to be YOU
Whenever fear-based thoughts arise in the mind notice them, but don't feed them with your attention. Giving attention to them energizes them and they multiply. Don't try to get rid of them or change them either. Simply notice them, as a neutral witness. Then slowly shift your attention from focusing on the thoughts to simply resting as that which is aware. Notice the stillness, the underlying presence, the breath moving through your body, the aliveness in your body. Keep your attention focused in this way no matter what.
With time you will notice a gradual reduction in the number of fear-based thoughts and a new type of thought arising. This new expression of thought will be a direct expression of pure consciousness and thus its content will be aligned with your True nature. These thoughts will be expressions of love, appreciation and gratitude. This expression of consciousness will also infuse your words and actions and your expression in form will become your most authentic expression, free from fear, conditionings and inauthentic masks.

Stay as the Witness
The nature of the world of forms is dualistic. Life is smooth sailing and then challenges arise. Emotions go high and then they go low. Life situations go up and then they go down. Happiness isn't found by becoming a master at manipulating and controlling the external realm of forms in order to maintain an impossible everlasting high.
True lasting happiness can only be found by discovering the formlessness which lies beyond the forms. The underlying alive presence of eternal beingness. You can access it right now in this moment by becoming still and resting your attention as that which is aware.
That which is not an experience. That which never moves or changes. The only thing that is everlasting and constant; pure awareness.

Give Up Interest in the Mind
The content of one's mind is primarily dependent upon conditionings and patternings, which are imprinted onto the system at an early age. Regardless of whether the thought patterns that develop and continuously play like a record are positive or negative, they feel familiar to the experiencer. This sense of familiarity can bring with it a distorted sense of comfort and security. In order to transcend identification with the mind one must have the willingness to leave behind this familiarity and surrender into the unknown.
With the recognition that there is an aware witness always present, which can observe thoughts without being identified with their content, a sense of freedom arises. This freedom is the discovery of the True self; that which is always here, unmoving, unchanging and unaffected by any thought or experience. Its very nature is peace.
In order to directly experience this peace as your True nature, enquire into who or what witnesses thoughts and then focus your attention constantly and consistently on and as that spacious awareness.

Can You Say YES to this Moment?

Bring your attention fully present into this moment and ask yourself, "can I say YES to whatever is here right now?" Yes to whatever emotions are present in this moment, yes to your life circumstances in this moment, even a yes to any resistance that's here. A total and complete yes to it all. If you can fully say yes to what's here, it is possible to experience peace in this moment.
Even if this moment is filled with challenges, rather than relating to your experience in a negative way, if you enquire, "what can I learn from this situation?" the challenges too can become gifts to be thankful for, because ultimately every situation contains opportunity for growth. Surrendering to what is doesn't mean that you no longer need to take action in life. Rather, the action that you take is no longer reactive or ego-driven, but informed by the deeper wisdom of life, which is accessed through the surrendered state of being.

Meeting Emotions Underlying Addictions
Very often what underlies addictive behaviors is unprocessed past emotion. In order to avoid feeling the pain of this trapped emotion, comfort is sought in experiences and substances. This coping mechanism can bring about a temporary sense of relief, but aside from not being a sustainable solution, it can have negative repercussions in many different areas of life, damaging health, relationships and ultimately keeping us from our natural state of happiness and well-being. By becoming consciously aware of the body's experience when an addictive behavioral impulse arises, it is possible to gently open to the uncomfortable emotion and by staying present with it and feeling it from a position of non-identification, these emotions can release and integrate. As a result of this practice, many unhealthy behaviors and addictive patterns fall away, resulting in more harmony, peace and happiness in all areas of life.

Say 100% Yes to What Is
Bring your attention fully present into this moment and ask yourself, "can I say YES to whatever is here right now?" Yes to whatever emotions are present in this moment, yes to your life circumstances in this moment, even a yes to any resistance that's here. A total and complete yes to it all. If you can fully say yes to what's here, it is possible to experience peace in this moment.
Even if this moment is filled with challenges, rather than relating to your experience in a negative way, if you enquire, "what can I learn from this situation?" the challenges too can become gifts to be thankful for, because ultimately every situation contains opportunity for growth.
Surrendering to what is doesn't mean that you no longer need to take action in life. Rather, the action that you take is no longer reactive or ego-driven, but informed by the deeper wisdom of life, which is accessed through the surrendered state of being.

The Willingness to Surrender
In order to know your true self through direct experience you must have the willingness to give up the mind's ideas about how life should be and what should be happening in life. This means giving up control, giving up interest in thoughts and having the willingness to deeply feel whatever wants and needs to be felt in the body.
With this total and complete surrender to the Divine itself there is no longer a conceptual 'me' directing 'my' life, there is only a deeper me (Awareness), which is aware of how life is unfolding. From here there is no resistance, and without resistance there is no suffering, only deep, unending peace.

The Three Levels of Awakening
The awakening of consciousness takes place on three levels: the mind, the body and the heart. The mind begins to awaken when deep questions arise and are reflected upon, such as, 'who am I?' 'what is the meaning of life?' 'what happens after I die?' 'does God exist?' Through the practice of self-enquiry the mind becomes conscious of itself and the veil of the separate self falls away to reveal the True self (pure awareness).
As higher consciousness begins to penetrate through the system, unprocessed emotions and energies that are held in the body bubble up to be integrated, and a longing from deep within the heart reveals its yearning to merge fully with the Divine. Each person will experience their own unique awakening journey and there is no right or wrong way for awakening to happen. Also, these levels of awakening can happen suddenly, slowly, separately or together.

Most of us grew up in a society which conditioned us to believe that our happiness was dependent on external circumstances, whether it's relationships, money, status, materialism or success. Those that discover that these things can only bring temporary fulfillment often begin a search for something deeper. A search for the Divine.
Lasting happiness is accessible to all of us in every moment. This happiness is derived not from things or circumstances, but from the joy of Being. When we stop all seeking, searching, resisting and efforting and become totally and completely present in this moment right now, a vast ocean of peace opens up to us. A peace that is unchanging, unmoving and eternal. As we become anchored in this presence, we can still have preferences and desires, and enjoy the beauty of the world of forms, but the difference is that we are no longer attached to those things or seeking happiness and fulfillment in them.

When the mind personalizes thoughts and feelings it creates problems. These problems all center around a conceptual self, which we refer to as 'I'. When we investigate the nature of this 'I' we discover that it cannot actually be found and does not actually exist, aside from in our own imagination. With this seeing comes the recognition that who I am is not that concept of myself, but that which is aware of the concept. This is pure awareness. It never changes, never moves, never dies. It just is. Nothing belongs to awareness, nothing affects it, nothing harms it and nothing can destroy it (you).
When your perspective shifts from identifying as the conceptual 'I' to understanding that 'I' am awareness, then you are instantly free from suffering. Feelings don't need to be changed or fixed, they are simply witnessed. Thoughts don't need to be changed or eliminated, they are simply witnessed. And the attention rests problem free as 'I awareness', simply witnessing the magnificent phenomena that is life.

Experience Emotions Without Suffering

Next time you experience what you would call a 'negative' emotion try this practice: Take a moment to pause, notice your breath and bring all your attention fully present into this moment. Become aware of sense perceptions, such as sounds, smells etc, and then notice the thoughts that are appearing in your mind. Don't try to stop or change the thoughts but just for this moment don't give any interest in whatever they're saying. Let go of the idea that anything needs to be fixed right now.
Then acknowledge the emotion that is present, and after acknowledging it take away its label. Notice that you didn't choose this experience, it is simply appearing by itself and let go of any personalization, resistance or attachment to the emotion. So you are simply observing it neutrally. You are the spacious, formless awareness in which the emotion is temporarily appearing. Let your attention rest as the untouched witness of the experience.
From here slowly and gently bring your attention more deeply into the body and adopt an attitude of open curiosity. Ask questions like, 'where is this emotion felt in my body? What is the actual sensation that's there?' Allow your attention to gently open to, include and consciously feel the sensations. Even if it feels uncomfortable stay with it and remind your body that you're safe and everything is ok right now. If resistance is present, acknowledge and allow that too.
If you notice that your attention gets pulled out of the body and back into streams of thought, the moment that you become aware of it simply notice and start the practice again. Don't beat yourself up about it if that happens, you're learning and this takes practice.

Can you be comfortable in not knowing and not having any answers right now? Can you even let go of all the answers that you believe you do have? ... answers to things like who you are and who other people are, and what the meaning of life is. Can you rest your attention fully present here in this moment without projecting your mind into past or future or any concept, and simply be in the mysterious unknown of the now?
In this moment you know the experiences which are appearing now (sense perceptions, emotions, sensations, thoughts etc), but these appearances will sooner or later disappear. But what is it that is knowing the experiences? That which knows / perceives never appears or disappears, and nor does it ever change. In fact it is the only thing that is ever truly stable. The discovery of your True self as this eternal, unchanging, unmoving awareness is what brings about the end of the sense of separation, and ultimately the end of suffering.

Relating Positively to Every Experience
It's possible to eliminate all problems from one's life by changing one's attitude towards life experiences. When you see that within each problem lies (often hidden) an opportunity to grow in some way, then problems transform into challenges containing hidden gifts and they are welcomed with joy and gratitude. This doesn't mean no longer having preferences and desires, which are natural and healthy aspects of the human experience. But what it does mean is that if your preferences and desires do not manifest, there is no longer suffering. There is instead the capacity to embrace every experience with gentle, unconditional love.

How to "Not Effort" in Spiritual Practice: Wales Retreat 2022
The experience of 'efforting' in one's spiritual practice is born from the conceptual self's ideas that something needs to be done in this moment. Such mental agendas often include stopping thoughts, being more present, getting enlightened etc. These ideas are in fact mere thoughts themselves and in order to let go of 'efforting', one must go beyond the level of thought.
Whenever there's a recognition that 'efforting' is happening, the key is to enquire in that moment, 'what story is the mind telling right now, about how I need to be doing, getting or becoming something?' and from there draw the attention back into that which aware of the thought and curiously enquire into the nature of that which is aware.
Pure awareness is beyond thoughts and concepts and therefore beyond agendas. It doesn't need to get, become or change anything, it simply IS. This pure awareness is the essence of who you are. When the attention continuously rests as pure awareness and there is no identification with any thought or mental concept it is possible to remain open, free and effortless in every single moment, regardless of any external or internal experience.

Welcoming Uncomfortable Emotions: Wales Retreat 2022
Uncomfortable emotions in and of themselves don't cause suffering. What causes suffering is the way that the mind interprets the sensations in the body and tells a story about them, which centers around a conceptual self.
For example, a contraction may appear in the belly area. From the higher perspective of the True self, consciousness, this is a neutral experience. It just is. It has no inherent meaning. The nature of consciousness is unconditional love so there is simply awareness of the sensation and no agenda to change it or get rid of it.
However, if the mind translates the sensation in the belly into a story, such as, "I have no worth because this sensation is appearing", an instant enemy has been born and all attention and effort must then be directed towards eliminating this enemy (the sensation in the belly) because it is painful to believe the story about its meaning. This inner war creates a sense of separation and suffering.
By seeing the story that the mind has created, recognizing that it is not the truth and welcoming all emotions with unconditional love, instant peace is possible.
