Emma Fetherman: Listening To and Learning From Youth
I decided to ask for the perspective of younger folks in my spiritual community, and Emma Fetherman was glad to oblige. She is in her college years, and I was appreciative of several nuggets of wisdom she offered. This conversation proved to me that great things (and great conversations) happen when we show up for younger people with open ears and real questions. Listen in!

Why Sabbath?
Why Sabbath?
This April riff may become a series. Why should we stop, rest, or sabbath? Whatever you might call it or know it to be, I have found it is one of the most rewarding and (currently) difficult habits to form. "Easy everywhere" technology as described by Andy Crouch actually runs huge interference on the practice of stopping. We need lots of motivation to overcome what is coming against our rest.
Today's episode is all about 10 reasons I think you should stop and seriously consider stopping what you are doing for 24 hours a week. I hope you find it helpful. Let's get our rest on!
Consider some of the resources I mention in this episode...
Wayne Muller's Sabbath
John Mark Comer's The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry
and Rich Villodas' The Deeply Formed Life
and The BEMA Podcast
...for more Sabbath inspiration.

Why Counseling?
Why Counseling?
A spring riff on why we need counseling at times in our life based on a very helpful quote my wife and I were talking about recently: "We go to counseling to understand issues and wounds so that we can repent and forgive" Mark Priday, Counselor.

Wendi Gorelik, Part 2: How To Keep Moving Forward When We Are All Homesick for Heaven
Here’s part two of a conversation I really enjoyed with Wendi Gorelik. She is a great friend and sister in Christ. She is devoted to making the world a more equitable place, and she loves teaching. She keeps Women's History Month 2022 going with a deep dive into her roles as a woman, mom, wife, and teacher in higher education. "It's through the pain and challenges that we've been able to find joy and healing." Mirna Cervantes is simply a beautiful soul who works tirelessly as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Los Angeles. She is also a mom, a professional, and a devoted follower of Jesus. Mirna is a great friend and the top recommendation of for Women's History Month 2022. She and her husband have kept doing the hard work of counseling and looking at their wounds. Eric Golden: Respect and Detaching from Unconscious Reasons We Do Things (Black History Month)
This conversation with Eric Golden, facilitator and Social-Emotional coach, was a gem. He is a black man, a father, and a professional facilitator, among his many roles. He shares so many compelling ideas about respecting our children as we raise them, control, boundaries, and how to do the hard work of deconstructing stories and roles we were born into. I hope you value this podcast as much as I enjoyed recording it... whew!

Dimitri Clarke Interviews Michael Lovett: Hearing Impaired, but Loving Listening
Dimitri has been a source of great joy in my life as I have woken up to how my brothers and sisters of color feel as they move through an unfair world. We served on the Denver Diversity Exploration Team for a couple of years, where we began enjoying fellowship in which we can discuss nearly anything. Dimitri set this time up, though, to interview me... about being hearing impaired and how that has affected my life. I so enjoyed "flipping the script" and letting her lead for an episode. We realized how wonderful it is when we express mutual curiosity. Listen in!

They have two children (Danielle and Tim), and a brand-new granddaughter, Elsa. He has worked as a counselor for over 30 years and is an adjunct professor at the University of Denver. Joe Hose: From Prisons to Skate Parks
Joe Hose: From Prisons to Skate Parks
Joe Hose is a Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Follower of Jesus, Leader of Professional Learning with the Federal Government, and Leader/Founder of the Colorado Skateboard Society. He entered education in 2010 following the 2008 housing crash, and found himself in prison... as an educator. After working day to day in a prison, he got to move to Colorado in 2015 to work in "secondary law enforcement" and that's where he and I connected over many early coffees about all things coaching and learning. He covers a lot of ground in his story and offers a great deal of vulnerability. He's a fellow coach, professional learning nerd, and a man who knows his life purpose (he actually carried his life purpose, written, in his pocket during a recent long tough stretch at work). His story is compelling and I hope you are as "stoked" to receive it as I was.

Tim Priestley: "Our roles are a divine way to help us grow"
Tim Priestley: "Our roles are a divine way to help us grow"
Season 10 (and Year 2!) of Man in Many Roles Podcast kicks off with a beautiful interview with my longtime friend and brother in Christ, Tim Priestley. He is candid and clear about how he makes sense of his roles, and how our roles deepen our spirituality as we pick up and lay down roles. He shares vulnerably about his divorce after 18 years of marriage and how he had to stop going to "Hope Island" habitually in order to grow.
Tim mentions a couple of resources and books that help him:
Fathered by God, by John Eldredge
Grist for the Mill, by Ram Dass
Everything Belongs, by Richard Rohr
Sacred Marriage: What if God Wants To Make Us Holy More than to Make us Happy?, by Gary Thomas

Seeking Sages | Episode 50!
Seeking Sages | Episode 50!
Wow! This is episode 50. I hope you enjoy thinking about Chapter 8 of John Eldredge's Fathered by God with me as I riff on what inspires me about the stage of a person's life called Sage, according to Eldredge. This book was very influential in my parenting and actually led to this podcast in many ways! We all want a sage and I'm inspired to endeavor to become one.
God, protect us from folly and dismissal as we enter our late 60s and beyond. Father, please protect us from the ill effects of success and safety. Help us to engage solitude, stillness, and silence so that we become sages--men and women who live out of a deep communion with you.
Also, I reference silence, solitude, and stillness. I think those 3 S-words will help us become the sages God intends as well as avoid unhealthy success and safety.
Let's keep living well as one soul in many roles!

Or I bet you have friends who are boy-like in their thinking. And let's be real.. smartphones are kinda like cocaine in their addictiveness. We need great ideas and strategies to manage those time and energy-sucking screens. This episode with help you live well with boys and your easily distracted loved ones and raise them with sanity.

Doing Things Right vs. Doing Right Things
Doing Things Right vs. Doing Right Things
Based on the feedback I've been getting and self-reflection, in this episode, I riff on the beliefs, attitudes, and habits of doing things right versus doing the right things.. oof... This work takes courage, and I'm not there yet, but I am glad to have you join me on this one as I try to share personally and preach to myself. I believe there is plenty in this episode to grow in and think about.

We're All Husbands and Wives
We're All Husbands and Wives
So glad to have you join me for a Fall Riff on the role of Lover. Lovers are those who appreciate beauty, who offer agape love to a special other, and who allow themselves to be loved with agape love by another. Yes, this role is about romance, but so much more than romance is wrapped up in the lover role. When we dare to love another, especially in a commitment like marriage, we all receive and offer love, affection, care, concern. We all lead and submit and follow. We are have varying proportions of the masculine and the feminine in our God-given and custom-crafted souls. I hope you enjoy and experience this podcast as thought-provoking and reflective.
I explore how Paul operated as a mother among his converts, and how men and women live in both husband and wife roles when in a committed relationship--dating, friendship, and of course, marriage.

Investing 101: It's Not About Money
Investing 101: It's Not About Money
In this first fall 2021 riff, I share about the way we all are investing, whether we have a financial adviser, stocks, ETFs, mutual funds or a retirement account or not.
We all trust others with valuable things and we all hope that we get a return of some sort on that which we have entrusted. We also invest in ourselves, too. It's about making sound investments and being patient as the valuable things we have invested do work in the vest pocket of the one in whom or in which we've in"vest"ed.

To Be a Son | Late Summer Riff
To Be a Son | Late Summer Riff
I decided to riff on the role of son/ daughter/ child; a role that is at times a source of great pride and gratitude, and at other times, makes me feel accused of dereliction of duty. When you think about it, there are many more podcasts about how to be a dad than how to be a son. Why is that? Well, hopefully, this episode stimulates your thinking, heart, and actions toward all that is good, true and beautiful about being a son, daughter, or child of God.

Vision for the Future and Muddy Windshields
Vision for the Future and Muddy Windshields
What does this episode's title stir in you? I wasn't initially excited to riff on this topic, but as I thought and prayed about it, this seemed more and more worthy of consideration: What is the mud on your windshield? What is messing up your vision, hope, and/or desire for the future? How do you clear the mud to see your vision more clearly? Listen, enjoy, subscribe, and share... That's what this podcast is about!
The quote at the beginning of this episode can be found here: https://wildatheart.org/daily-reading/we-can-only-hope-what-we-desire
Randy Alcorn's book, Heaven is a highly recommended read and I refer to it in the podcast.

How to Apologize, Part 2
How to Apologize, Part 2
Life presented a great lesson for us all in my home recently as I worked with my son to help him understand how to apologize. Then I realized there was something in the experience for all of us. I hope you find the episode as stimulating and helpful as I did when I was writing about it. I think Jesus' teaching on how to apologize, love and walk with an offender is amazing.

Summer Riffs 5: Talk Is Cheap, but Communicating is Precious and Powerful
This is the 40th Episode of the Man in Many Roles Podcast! Thank you for tuning in. This week, for some reason, I felt compelled to complete this sentence: Talk is cheap, but... Well, this summer riff is what resulted. I hope that this brief riff inspired a bit more thoughtfulness in you and me about what and how and to whom we are communicating.

Summer Riffs 4: How to Take Better Vacations: Gratitude, Consideration, Flexibility
Vacations can be disasters or they can be adventures with tough times sprinkled in. What they won’t ever be is flawless. Here’s a way to avoid idolizing a perfect vacation and embrace each one as slower practice of three disciplines: gratitude, consideration, and flexibility. We need them for life… who’d a thunk that you could grow life skills prepping for vacations, going on them, and reflecting on them?

Summer Riffs 3: How to Relate and Converse Well with Anyone: Six Verbs
On a beautiful night on my patio I watched a thunderstorm and decided to record a few ideas about to to live well in relationships, engage anyone, and have a good conversation. Here are six actions to consider. NOTE: much of what I’m sharing is based on Cognitive Coaching training I’ve received over the years. I paraphrase what I have enjoyed implementing over the years, and credit is due to the authors of Cognitive Coaching, Art Costa and Robert Garmston. Their book, Cognitive Coaching and the associated training continues to be powerful in my life. For more: www.cognitivecoaching.com

Umm... How do we celebrate Juneteenth? Part 2
In this second part of the "How do we celebrate Juneteeth?" series, we turn to think about how we might interact with the Juneteenth holiday as Christians. Also, and more importantly, what about the other 364 days a year? How do we build an inclusive community of ethnically diverse members? What are some Dos and Don'ts?

Umm.. How do we celebrate Juneteenth? Part 1
Umm.. How do we celebrate Juneteenth? Part 1
How will you celebrate Juneteenth? As we enter the weekend of Independence Day, we look back at what feels like a last-minute announcement from the White House in June of 2021: We have a new national holiday. What does the Juneteenth holiday mean to black people and how might we celebrate it? Well, no one knows, and it's not like all black folks view the holiday the same way... so let's start there. And here are some ideas shared among some of my dear friends, Carlos & Dimitri Clarke, and Tony Chukes, all of us are part of the Denver Church of Christ and have been for decades. It was only a few years ago, however, that I was invited to actually swap stories about race and what it's been like for them to live as black in America. I have been so honored to receive their stories and simply let those stories be true. Join me and listen, enjoy, subscribe, and share.
Carlos refers to Forced into Glory: Abraham Lincoln’s White Dream, by Lerone Bennet, Jr. ISBN 10: 0874850029

Summer Riffs 2: Jesus is the Most Inclusive Guy You've Ever Met
Summer Riffs 2: Jesus is the Most Inclusive Guy You've Ever Met
In my second summer riff, and on the heels of a new national holiday, I got to thinking, writing, and riffing on inclusivity from Jesus' point of view. At first, it seems counterintuitive to think Jesus is being inclusive when he says, "I am the way, the truth and the life" I've been following Jesus the best I can for about 30 years in earnest, and I think Jesus deserves some more consideration for what he claimed about himself. Despite how controversial the above quote is, I'm not sure it qualifies Jesus as an exclusive person given the totality of his story, his actions and his other claims about himself. I think that Jesus would be more accepting of his critics and many 21st century zealots and popular folks than they would be of Him.
So I hope the riff on inclusivity is stiimulating to your thinking and living well in all your roles. Please comment or audio record your response to this podcast at anchor.fm/maninmanyroles.

Summer Riffs: Six Dimensions of Happiness, Joy, Pleasure, and Leisure
Less structure, more spontenaity in the Summer! I decided to nerd out a bit and riff about Happiness, Joy, Pleasure, and Leisure through 6 dimensions or lenses:
proximity to self
durability over time
agency
validity (truth)
mercy (goodness)
and beauty

Richard (Uncle Dicky, Tío Ricardo) McCloskey: A Self in Many Roles
This episode kicks off June on the eve of my Uncle Richard T. McCloskey's 71st birthday. It also kicks off the Uncle side of the Auntie/Uncle Project, in which my uncles and father will speak about how to live well in many roles.
Listen in as my Tío Ricardo and I talk about his interesting life as a Self in many roles. He has been a railroad worker, computer programmer, Trappist monk, and High School Spanish teacher. He inspired me to learn Spanish and was certainly a deep influence on my life, career in education, and my eagerness to just try. So wonderful to ask more about the people you have loved and admired, and that just what I got to do. I hope my children and their children enjoy this time I had with my Uncle Dicky. He has diverse and unique life experience to share. If we heed his experience and advice, I think we will live better as a lone (not lonely) self in many roles.

Mary Fran McCloskey Soulis: The Auntie Project
Mary Fran Soulis is in her later 70s, the oldest daughter of 7 siblings, and my oldest auntie or uncle on the McCloskey side. She has striven to live well with a love of the written word, a love for light, and practice of gratitude. Enjoy some great advice from one who has been many places, and read LOTS of poetry. She also practices what she is sharing. I loved this conversation, and I hope you enjoy it, share it, and subscribe to the podcast. References from the podcast and Auntie Mary Fran’s show notes: 1) Kim Langley, Send My Roots Rain: A Companion on the Grief Journey This includes the poem "Otherwise" by Jane Kenyon. It includes many other beautiful poems. 2) Mary Oliver, Why I Wake Early, with the poem of the same name. That poem can also be found in Devotions, a self-selected series of Oliver's own poems. 3) Hafiz (as translated by Daniel Ladinsky), I Heard God Laughing: Poems of Hope and Joy. 4)Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet. "Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms or like books written in a very foreign tongue... The point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer." 5) James Baldwin, Unknown Source, "It is necessary while in darkness to know that somewhere there is light, that in oneself, waiting to be found, there is light."

Sue McCloskey Reddick: The Auntie Project
Aunt Sue was the first of the aunties and uncles I asked to record with me. I sent a communication to all my fraternal and maternal aunts for a series of May podcasts in celebration of Mother's Day. Auntie Sue responded to the invitation to share some of her life experiences and wisdom because she loves me, even though she wasn't entirely sure what I was up to. I'm very glad she did because now we all benefit, and this recording will remain for years! She is a self, sister, widow, mother, and grandmother in many roles. Listen in for wisdom and how to lead your family and relationships well.

She shares just weeks from her 50th wedding anniversary. Speed, BMoe, & Tony: Three Men of God in Many Difficult Roles
Darryl Speed ("Speed"), Brian Moore ("BMoe"), and Tony Turner are three lifelong Jesus followers who have a lot of experience, pain, and things to share about how to live in a church that is mostly white and doesn't always feel like home, but more like a Bed and Breakfast. Their sincerity and stories are inspiring, and their desire for spaces to talk about race and racialized experiences run deep. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as Phil and I did. Let's all commit to welcoming the disruptive stories as individual souls in many roles. When we do so, we expand the territory of God's kingdom with each conversation that we have.

Lisa Johnson: Mutuality in Self, Follower, and Leader Roles (Women's History Month)
Lisa Johnson is a woman, a disciple of Jesus, a wife and mother, and ministers in Portland, Oregon with her husband, Steve Johnson. The concept and biblical truth of mutuality became clear to her several years ago in the wake of a diagnosis of terminal cancer. She finishes our Women's History Month in fine fashion as we consider many things: what a "suitable helper" from Genesis 1 really is, how hierarchy stems from sin, how to focus on our gifts in a spiritual community, and how God originally intended men and women to relate to each other, and so much more. Mutuality applies to gender relationships, race/ethnic and class relationships and was modeled most clearly by Lisa's favorite man, Jesus Christ. We hope this episode offers a hopeful vision that makes sense and inspires us all to live well as we relate to men and women in many roles. Subscribe, enjoy, and share! Women's History Month on the podcast continues this week: My one and only sister joins me for an honest conversation about what it's like to be a woman in many roles, sharing stories that I missed while I was a teenager (she is five years younger than I), and the roots of her impressive career as a corporate executive, "Teammate for Life", and hard working mom. I'm proud of her, and I felt the hour we spent recording our conversation was a gift and a real treat for both of us. Listen in and share it with a friend!

Marne Gulley: Mother & Leader in Many Roles (Women's History Month)
I'm thrilled to have Marne Gulley, the first female fan of the podcast (as far as I know), on the show today. Today's show continues our March Women's History Month series. Marne is a beautiful soul. Having always had a heart to adopt has led Marne to adopt three children, including Andre, who's two years old at the time of this recording (and part of why she originally tuned into the Man in Many Roles podcast). She has much to say on issues of racial equity, but I appreciate more how she LIVES well as an equity champion, mother, and professional. I have created professional development with her, laughed very hard, and even shed a few tears as we have done hard work together since 2015. I hope you enjoy listening in to my conversation with a woman who is my friend, and who loves God and her children as she speaks about balance, presence, and the value of a village. BJ Foster: Self, Daughter, Follower, & Leader in Many Roles (Women's History Month)
BJ Foster: Self, Daughter, Follower, & Leader in Many Roles (Women's History Month)
This podcast is a perfect bridge between our Black History Month episodes and Women's History Month. BJ Foster is a Broadway actor, Women's Ministry Leader, Jesus follower, and now an author, who happens to be a black woman in America. Her book, Rebound: Staging a Spiritual Comeback (https://amzn.to/3aoLmMS) just released in January of 2021. She has worked very hard to unpack why she felt so outside of her integrity, and it has helped her live well in her many roles. She and I talk freely about how nothing is wasted, tearing down and building up, what it is to live as a black women's minister in a mostly white church, and all along the way, she is dropping nuggets of wisdom. Listen to find out how to redeem hard times for goodness, truth, and beauty; how to shift from survival to showing up wholehearted and holy; and how suffering is like croutons. She has done the painful work of introspection, silence, stillness, and solitude with God and is now living better than ever. We all have access to transformation, and must work to live well as a man or woman (or a black women's ministry leader) in all our roles! I am truly enjoying creating this podcast for you, even though I would do it if it were only for me!

Nii Codjoe: Self, Son, Leader in Many Roles (Black History Month)
Our Black History Month series concludes (but don’t worry, we’ll keep bringing diverse voices to the show) with Nii Codjoe. Nii is a favorite new friend from 2020, an entrepreneur, a son of a college professor from Ghana, and a joy to talk with anytime I get the chance. I hope you enjoy his take on learning, being a black man in America, and his brilliance.

Bill Delacruz: Self and Leader in Many Roles (Black History Month)
Bill is a former Denver Public Schools colleague, a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion leader, and a professional whom I admire, and he is a man in many roles. He has done and continues to do the work of self-reflecting so that he might honor, be authentic, and work against biases and systemic racism. I love every chance I get to talk to him. His book, Finding The Origination Point, came out in 2019. I highly recommend it if you care to do something personally meaningful to fight bias and systemic racism. The work begins in each and every one of us.

Aaron Burden: Self, Son, Lover, Husband, Dad (Black History Month)
Aaron Burden is a follower of Jesus, son, brother, husband to his wife of 16 years, and parent to a son and daughter. He pastors youth in the church his wife grew up in. He is also a black man in America. Listen in as he talks about sunrise, the recharge that a hobby offers, and all that comes against goodness, truth, and beauty in his life. He talks about how he's changed from 2019 to the present, and what he would share with his fellow church members who are not people of color. He is a godly artist, and a great guy to talk to, and God has allowed him to capture insane beauty.

Wade Cook: Self, Husband, Leader in Many Roles (Black History Month)
Wade Cook: Self, Husband, Leader in Many Roles (Black History Month)
Welcome to the first Man in Many Roles Podcast Black History Month installment of 2021. Wade Cook is the first black elder appointed by the Denver Church of Christ, and while we don't directly address race and ethnicity, we do go deeply into HOW to honor people. one by one. Wade is hilarious, magnetic, and loves talking to people. We unpack how to relate to people well as men in many roles. Watch out, there are a LOT of nuggets to live by that Wade offers and that surface organically in this episode. This episode for me was like a little slice of heaven, where I predict we will freely notice and enjoy the beauty of each other's presence and character.
MLK's desire was that we would be judged on the content of our character. Let's consider how we are showing up for and judging others based on knowing their character. Our loved ones, folks we lead, and anyone we meet is secretly hoping we do just this. This podcast offers some practicals on just how to honor each and every person we meet.

Jim Eager, Part 1: Son, Husband/Lover, Dad in Many Roles
Jim Eager, Part 1: Son, Husband/Lover, Dad in Many Roles
I loved having this totally honest conversation with my old buddy Jim Eager, the only man I've ever written a song for. (If I find it, I will post it) I am glad to bring this conversation to you, PG-13 language and all. Jim and I were part of the same spiritual community over a decade ago, shared so much fun, and then the hardest of times hit and he was left stunned, and scrambling to raise his three kids as a single dad after his marriage ended. He found my podcast a few months ago (with a nudge from God in my opinion), enjoyed it, implemented some things, then sent me a message about the impact of the podcast. That was a couple of months ago, and we finally sat down and recorded a conversation via Google Meet. He sat on his patio in the Florida rain, and I listened eagerly from the basement office. Jim paints a beautiful picture of falling in love after divorce, setting proactive boundaries, and the benefit of spiritual community even when separated from it. He is father to six children in a blended family that is apparently always after the bag of Salt and Vinegar chips. He loves his wife, who keeps him in check and vice versa. Jim is real, and reflects on the power of his mother, good conversation and how his spiritual roots still serve him and his loved ones well. He painted pictures as he spoke and I just loved catching up with him based on the fact that my creativity impacted him for the better. He is an artist and stage craftsman, and I hope you find him as interesting as I do. NOTE: this podcast unlike others features more adult language than my usual podcasts. I LOVE creating this podcast for you, even though I would do it if it were only for me!

Phil Salvador: Husband, Dad, Leader in Many Roles
Phil Salvador: Husband, Dad, Leader in Many Roles
Whether you are a dad, or not, this podcast has some real gems for us a souls in many roles. Phil Salvador is a dad in many roles, just out of a master's program, new fatherhood, married, and former school leader. We both work in Denver as educators, but the content at manyroles.com took our friendship to another level. He loves following Christ and shares vulnerably about his favorite roles and the accusations he fights daily with community, prayer, self-reflection, and practicing presence. Dads, or soon-to-be dads, tune in and share with your buddies. Dads, I mentioned 3 needs of our sons' and daughter's hearts, based on Wild at Heart by John Eldredge (https://amzn.to/3qcz6pf). The summary is here: http://bit.ly/3owUJAd. A Personal Celebration & A Leadership Love
A Personal Celebration & A Leadership Love
Based on my Jan 5, 2021 blog on manyroles.com, and with celebration in my heart on some recent personal success, I offer this podcast on loving in a rare way that every leader and every follower would benefit from--Bold Love.
This is just a short celebration and a bit of riffing on loving like the world and loving like a true hero would love. The contrast is stunning, challenging and hopefully inspiring. We can practice bold love the next time we are tempted to give in to revenge or resignation, and focus more on reconciliation and renewal.

Chris Mendez Johnson: Brother, Husband/Lover, Self, & Leader in Many Roles
Chris Mendez Johnson: Brother, Husband/Lover, Self, & Leader in Many Roles
Season 2, Episode 1 kicks off the new year with a new focus on conversations with men in many roles. I start with a conversation with Chris Mendez Johnson. He is an old friend of mine with whom I've shared wonderful conversations, fireside chats, and spiritual fellowship. We are both married fathers of two boys, and because he moved away a few years ago, I'm very glad to share our many roles conversation because we stumbled onto some great nuggets as we caught up. He found Season 1 and my Twitter feed rather randomly, so we decided to catch up and record our time together. I hope Chris becomes regular on the show. He leads a small group of Christians in a spiritual community in Wyoming. This conversation focuses primarily on the self role, the husband/lover role, and we touch on other roles too. The Many Roles Matrix is a reflective tool we refer to in the podcast, and it's free to download here: https://bit.ly/3f7ZXOO

Heaven Hopes: Love and Joy
Heaven Hopes: Love and Joy
As 2020 winds down, I recorded this on the evening of Christmas Eve after telling my sons (again) the story of Jesus' birth, but Hope, Joy, Love and Peace is just as relevant in June as it is in December. Based on the four Advent foci of Hope, Love, Peace and Joy, I decided to share a few items from my Heaven Hopes List, which I add to three times per week, thanks to my trusty iPhone alarm that goes off at 8pm. The whole list is based on a hope of Heaven--a new and fully restored heaven and earth--which Jesus said he was working towards. He said, "See, I am making all things new" (Revelation 21:5)
Hope, Love, Joy and Peace are four things we need to spend more time reflecting on, hoping for, and talking about with our loved ones. As we do, we will live better in all our roles.

Dad: *Special Holiday Edition* Joseph's Affirmation
Dad: *Special Holiday Edition* Joseph's Affirmation
Today's podcast is my reading of a short story I wrote 11 years ago shortly before my son, Ian, was born. It is part reflection, part imagination, part worship of God as a Father.
If you are a Dad you know the killer pressure to come through when the pressure is on. Joseph, the father of Jesus felt that pressure. His fiance popped up pregnant, he had to work through that, then he had to talk a long journey to another town while she was ready to give birth. Then no place to stay. Then God came through. Enjoy the story.
Here's a favorite song of mine, "The Squalor and the Saviour" by Josh Gauton that I love to listen to every December: https://youtu.be/1E3JYZEwF5Y

How to Promote Peace this Holiday Season
How to Promote Peace this Holiday Season
Based on a recent blog post, I'm riffing on a decision I made to bring more peace in my life and relationships, based on an advent bible study plan I'm reading with my wife and sons this holiday season. I will make another podcast or two about the other decisions in the coming weeks. Bible.com and their YouVersion app is a major tool in my roles as a parent, husband, and follower of Jesus. The Advent plan is picked is here: https://www.bible.com/reading-plans/22462-bibleproject-advent-reflections

Start Now on Next Year's Goals
Start Now on Next Year's Goals
Based on two blogs at manyroles.com, this podcast is an encouragement to enter a season of reflection to prepare for the new year rather than participate in hurried and harried life in late 2020 (or whenever you listen to this episode). There's never a bad time to reflect, remember that:
your heart matters,
questions are good, and
desires and hopes are life
We will live well in our many roles to the degree we reflect on our roles in the past year to get ready for the next.

Ways to Thrive in a Pandemic-Affected Holiday Season
Ways to Thrive in a Pandemic-Affected Holiday Season
How do we do more than just survive this strange holiday season?
What are some ideas to consider to make life more fun, meaningful and joyful?
How do I teach my kids to give to others a bit more even as they are just "done" with the changes in their lives this year.
Oh yes, and how can I use my phone to grow in gratitude without downloading another app?
These questions will be addressed in this podcast, and I hope to inspire you to implement some joyful practices to thrive in the remainder of 2020.

The Many Roles Matrix
The Many Roles Matrix
Are you willing to use this strange season in late 2020 (or whenever you read this) to reflect and do some deep inner work?
I drafted a Many Roles Matrix you can download for journaling, a conversation, simple reflection, or prayer. This podcast walks through how I used it and how it might benefit you as one soul in many roles.
How would it affect you to be more mindful and grounded at the next holiday function, tomorrow at work, in your parenting in your marriage, or in your current relationship? This matrix is just a starting point, and I attempted to address some of these questions in my first Man in Many Roles podcast that introduces the roles as I understand them in my life.
Good questions are like tools, thus the beautiful photo on this blog. Good questions dig deeply if they are asked with genuine curiosity, and if you engage questions deeply on your own, they provide a solitary opportunity to know your identity more deeply, just like the fascination we feel when we are young, dig up the ground and find a world of wonder below the grass.

Jobhunting as Courage in All Roles
Jobhunting as Courage in All Roles
This episode connects the suffering that is job hunting as a man in many roles with our courage, or heart life. Whether you are a man, or love a man who is jobhunting, this episode has vulnerable sharing, advice, some reflections on 2020, and hopefully empathy for all of us who are suffering from a lack of something, be it a job, a relationship... anything that matters to us that we lack. Life is risk. And we risk for what is important to us. We require courage to acquire important and valuable things. And heaps of perseverance. See the associated blog on Jobhunting as Courage at manyroles.com for more info and inspiration.

Prepisode: Introduction to the Man in Many Roles Podcast
This episode has been years in the making, and represents a leap into the vulnerable act of creation of art that is important to me and connected to my life and desire. Thank you for tuning in, and I hope the podcast's exploration of manhood in all its facets with prove helpful to men and anyone who loves a boy or man. In this "Prepisode" (Why am I so jazzed I made up that word?) I articulate who I am and what I hope to offer as it relates to the seven distinct but overlapping roles we play and live out as men.
