Happy medal Monday everyone! I had an idea, looking at this box of medals, to dig in there and show you guys some of my favorites.

My all time favorite medal is from the 2009 LA marathon, because they say you never fortget your first.

Seriously it is my favorite because one I love LA

As you can see I cut the ribbon off because I didn’t care about it and didn’t know I was gonna collect the ribbons.

But here it is, this is what set the seed, this was what got me started on the 40 plus marathons to this date

153. 2023 Boston Marathon Race Review and Race Recap

153. 2023 Boston Marathon Race Review and Race Recap

Welcome to a special episode of the Marathon Running Podcast, where we recap and review the 127th Boston Marathon or the 2023 Boston Marathon.

This year's race marked the 10th anniversary of the tragic bombing that shook the marathon world in 2013. In honor of the anniversary, a ceremony was held on Saturday, where the families of the victims and survivors came together to lay wreaths at the memorial sites near the finish line.

The Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world and one of the most prestigious races, known for its challenging course, enthusiastic spectators, and rich history. The marathon route is a point-to-point course, starting in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and finishing in Boston's Copley Square.

The Boston Marathon has seen many iconic moments in its history, including Kathrine Switzer becoming the first woman to officially run the race in 1967, and the tragedy of the bombing in 2013.

To commemorate the anniversary, the docuseries "American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing" was released. The three-part series details the tragic events of the 2013 marathon and the hunt for the Tsarnaev brothers.

The professional field for the 2023 Boston Marathon included many top runners, such as Eliud Kipchoge, the world record holder. With Kipchoge in the field, the men's race was one of the fastest in Boston Marathon history.

However, 2022 winner Evans Chebet surged ahead in the Newton hills to repeat as champion. Hellen Obiri, a late entry in the elite women's field and running only her second marathon, finished strong to win the women's race.

The men's and women's wheelchair races were also fiercely competitive, with Switzerland's Marcel Hug winning his sixth men's wheelchair crown and Manuela Schar of Switzerland finishing first in the women's wheelchair race.

Overall, the 2023 Boston Marathon was a thrilling event with many memorable moments. It showcased the resilience and determination of the running community and honored the victims and survivors of the 2013 tragedy.

152. "Run Faster Marathons: The Proven Path to PR" and 10 running rules to live by

In this episode we to Chris Knighton, Coach of Knighton Run club and learn all about his amazing book for runners “Run Faster Marathons: The Proven Path to PR.”  (We will also hop into the chapter that tells us 10 running rules to live by.)

The title pretty much sums it up, and is also the reason why we invited Chris onto our show.Chris had sent us a copy of his book and we fell in love with it. It is precise enough for a good read and now we have Chris come onto our show and talk to us as we go through the chapters of his book. Super fun.

In this episode we are going to do a race recap of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. This marathon is special as there is so much meaning and history to it. In April of 1995, two men destroyed the Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City filling 168 people, 10 of which were children. This marathon exists to keep the memories of those victims alive and remind us that we can overcome hard things when we come together.

One highlight of this marathon included an expo with a panel of legends (Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Dick Beardsley, and others) who were there to answer questions of the running community.

In this episode we also got to interview race director Kari Watkins.

In this episode we talk about two very important topics: 1. MARATHON BLUES and 2. POST MARATHON RECOVERY.

The marathon blues, also known as post race depression, is a sentiment that a lot of runners experience after the race. We will give you a proper definition, and will talk to you about the symptoms, causes, and how to handle these feelings.

When it comes to post marathon recovery, we see much advice on the internet about how much time to take off after your marathon, but very little information as to why those numbers are prescribed. So we look at some studies that will give us an idea how to translate the results of the studies into what is best for us runners as an individual. We will also talk about what things to do and what things not to do to speed up our recovery.

51. Turning your miles into more (money) with Gene Gurkoff

In this episode we spoke about using our logged miles to do something good. All of us have running watches or some sort of device that enables us to track out progress. Well, there are a few option, and you don’t have to pick one. There are many ways to log your miles.
One option is to sign up with achievements, where you can log miles. Once you reach 10,000 points, you can get yourself a gift card or donate your miles to charity. Very simple, and here is a link:
tinyurl.com/yheruj5s That is something really rewarding.
And if you wanna do even more, you can do so. There’s a company that allows you to log your miles with them, automatically, and those miles will earn $ for a good case. So we decided to interview Gene Gurkoff. Gene Gurkoff is the Founder of Charity Miles, a free iPhone/Android app that enables people to earn money for charity when they walk, run or bike. He explains the history of the company as well as how all this works. Gene himself has run 35 marathons and 6 Ironman triathlons to raise money for Parkinson's research in honor of his grandfather who has the disease.
