EP30: Sananda Maitreya, Part 1

EP30: Sananda Maitreya, Part 1

Tomorrow’s episode features Sananda Maitreya and is somewhat of a scoop. I produced his first album ‘The Hardline According To…’ in the late 80’s, and his impact was shockingly huge and immediate. He sang like a soul angel, he moved like a combination of James Brown and Otis Redding, and his charisma was off the scale. But most importantly, his supreme songwriting and performance talent was undeniable. He sold 14million albums and conquered the world… and then…

This is my first in depth discussion with him for 30 years  – we hadn’t spoken at all during that time except the occasional letter. Our reconnection and love for each other was immediate and heartwarming. We had so much to talk about that we decided this should be spread over two episodes.

Ladies and gentlemen, buckle up – it’s the magnificent artist now known as Sananda Maitreya…

Peter’s fantastic work as part of Joy Division and then New Order is well known, and he now tours the world as Peter Hook and The Light. He has appeared on my BEF love shows, and he is always memorable (and usually hilarious).

EP27: Sarah Jane Morris

EP27: Sarah Jane Morris

My good friend Sarah Jane Morris is a singer with an astonishing vocal range. She is probably best known for her stellar recordings with Jimi Somerville in The Communards, but her 40-year career is so much more diverse than that…

Over the decades she has developed a loyal and loving international audience (particularly in Italy), and her rich contralto voice goes from strength to strength. She has performed with a diverse range of groups, from rock to soul to African blues, with classical orchestras, a one-hundred cello ensemble, with acoustic guitars and jazz big bands. Her voice, her versatility, and her emotional intelligence - the absolute authenticity of feeling which she conveys - make her a world-class, treasured and highly compelling performer.

Her guest appearances on various live and recorded BEF projects have been exceptional, and Martyn produced her 1992 album Heaven. She is a committed socialist and activist, and, like Martyn, was a member of Red Wedge supporting the Labour Party in the mid 80’s

Ladies and Gentlemen – I give you great Sarah Jane Morris…

Nile Rodgers has written, produced, and performed on albums that have sold more than 500 million units and 75 million singles worldwide. He is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a three-time Grammy Award-winner, and the chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame., Rolling Stone wrote in 2014 that "the full scope of Nile Rodgers' career is still hard to fathom".

And Nile’s talent matches his personality – outgoing and exceptional. He’s a humanitarian, one of the good guys, and his creativity, bravery and positivity are shining examples for us all to follow. I have no more words – just listen to THE MAN…

Martyn has known Arthur Baker for many years, sometimes competing for similar productions but always remaining good friends. He is an American record producer and DJ best known for his work with hip hop artists like Afrika Bambaataa and Planet Patrol, and his work with New Order. His love of dance music and his creativity merged to form the ‘Arthur Baker’ sound – the origins of which heavily featured Roland drum machines and rhythms influenced by early electronic music pioneers like Kraftwerk. He is a very important figure in the development of hip-hop and mainstream dance music, and he’s a fascinating character.

EP24: Daniel Miller

It’s hard to describe how much respect I have for Daniel Miller. As a creator and music producer - from the early days of The Normal (Warm Leatherette, TVOD), Silicon Teens, to Duet Emmo and Sunroof,  to his foundation of Mute Records, and his boundless support for young electronic artists, he is without doubt one of the music industry’s good guys, without whom many artists would never have flourished. For instance, to this day, Mute and Erasure conduct their business on a level of trust unheard of – no written contract, 50/50 split after costs. What a great man… and what an enormous range of talented artists Mute has supported  - Erasure, Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp, Fad Gadget, A Certain Ration, and his love of Techno music. He is also a DJ, a performer and above all a maestro of the synthesiser – ladies and gentlemen…

Part of the original lineup of the truly legendary Cabaret Voltaire (and a major influence on the early Human League during their time together in Sheffield), his destiny was always connected to his love of sound recording. Martyn has been a fan of his since the Doctors first album release, and their paths only recently crossed once more when Richard and he became lecturers at Tileyard Education in London. Richard is a fine and innovative songwriter, and has just released a single remixed by Martyn called ‘Walk Of Shame’. Let’s face it, anyone who has maintained a career in music and showbusiness for over 40 years deserves a huge amount of credit…

Ladies and gentlemen – Kid Strange…

EP16: John Foxx

EP16: John Foxx

John Foxx aka Dennis Leigh is the quietly powerful and enigmatic maker of futurist electro pop and composer of elegant soundscapes. Martyn met him and became friends whilst recording in his studio The Garden 40 years ago, and his work has remained massively influential since then, featuring an ever changing series of reinventions. His commitment to innovation and education is a powerful one. And he’s a fellow Northerner! Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to be fascinated...

EP15: Roisin Murphy

EP15: Roisin Murphy

Roisin Murphy is without doubt a force of nature. After her rise to stellar fame with the band Moloko, and the club classic ‘Sing It Back’, she has matured into a unique musical visionary. Born in Ireland, moved to Manchester and settled in Sheffield, she has gone on to create some of the most intelligent and futuristic electronic pop music in the last 2 decades. Apart from being massively respected in the music community for her daring and originality, her new album ‘Roisin Machine’ is a total, unequivocal triumph, and is top of my playlists currently.

Give it up for the machine herself…

EP14: Gary Numan

EP14: Gary Numan

Gary Numan is a fascinating and surprisingly affable guy – he’s a singer, a songwriter, a composer and producer, and one of the great electronic pop pioneers. Tubeway Army started as a punk band and, under his Gary Numan persona, quickly metamorphosed into the most popular electronic futurist band of the early 80’s. He is creatively driven, a true artist who clearly doesn’t flinch from controversy, and he has a unique vision which explains his enormous and loyal fanbase. He has sold over 10 million records, and that is no joke. He also loves aircraft and aviation – wait for the story at the end of the podcast – jaw dropping…

Ladies and gentlemen – It’s cold outside…it’s Gary Numan!

EP13: Thomas Dolby

EP13: Thomas Dolby

Thomas Dolby is a very interesting and surprisingly humble renaissance man and polymath. He has always combined a fascination with the future as a kind of geeky avatar, with a playful and highly commercial musical approach. Perhaps best known for blinding us with science, Thomas Dolby has always blurred the lines between composition and invention. As a London teenager, Tom Robertson was fascinated with the convergence of music and technology. His experiments with an assortment of keyboards, synthesizers and cassette players led his friends to dub him “Dolby.” That same fascination later drove him to become an electronic musician and multimedia artist whose groundbreaking work fused music with computer technology and video. Two decades, several film scores, five Grammy nominations and countless live-layered sound loops later, it's clear Dolby's innovations have changed the sound of popular music.

That’s Thomas – smart cookie…

EP12: Martin Fry

EP12: Martin Fry

Martin grew up through the formative late 70’s in Sheffield with Martyn – hanging out at the same pubs, writing fanzines while he was studying at Sheffield University. Influenced by both the early Human League and Cabaret Voltaire initially, he became the singer of Vice Versa, and early electropop act, which soon evolved into that rarest of creatures – a fully realised, truly popular modern pop creation – ABC. With the help of Trevor Horn, they created indisputably one of the greatest debut albums of the 80’s, possibly all-time. Martin has remained as creative and stylish as ever to this day, and, performing live, has continued to thrill audiences all over the world.

Ladies and gentlemen – the King of Cool, Martin Fry…

EP11: Gerald Casale

EP11: Gerald Casale

Gerry Casale is a genius. There, I’ve said it. I became a close friend with him when we first met in 1981 when his US management company (DEVO, Neil Young, The Residents, etc.) took on Heaven 17. His friendly and iconoclastic personality has always been a major inspiration for me and many musicians I know. His integrated artistic and philosophical approach is worthy of much more credit than merely his appearance as a rock star. He is a true renaissance man, with a beautiful, humanistic core.

Gerry's music career spans more than 40 years. He came to prominence in the late 1970s as co-founder and bass player of the new wave concept band Devo, which became massively popular worldwide in the late 70’s and 80’s. Casale is the main lyricist and one of the main composers of Devo's music and directed most of Devo's music videos. He is one of only two members (along with lead singer and keyboardist Mothersbaugh) who have been with Devo throughout its entire history.

Enjoy this illuminating conversation. We are all Devo!

EP10: Midge Ure

EP10: Midge Ure

Midge Ure is an internationally famous multi-dimensional being – singer, songwriter, producer, musical director, performer, composer, writer, podcaster, lover of technology, synthesist, guitarist par excellence. He’s also one of the most lovely people on the planet – a good friend, a family man, and a man of generous wisdom. His work ethic is second to none, and his love of his music and performing shines through everything he does. Martyn and Midge became friends in the early 80’s when their paths often crossed on TV shows, but their biggest collaboration was on Band Aid. They have remained good friends since then, and you can hear the love and respect they have for each other. Ladies and gentlemen, there is only one Midge Ure…

EP09: Vince Clarke

EP09: Vince Clarke

Here is the link for your listening enjoyment – especially good on headphones as it is mixed in binaural format (3D for headphones). Enjoy, and thanks for your support – please subscribe as I have some amazing guests already in the can – you will be impressed!
________
Vince Clarke needs very little introduction. Apart from being one of my greatest friends, he is also my partner in our 3D soundscape company Illustrious Company, and he is one of pop’s leading songwriters. As recently mentioned by Jim Ottewill in Sound On Sound’s intervi
Erasure's musical wizard Vince Clarke is pondering the future of electronic music, and whether pop's tectonic plates will ever be shaken in the way they were when machines first came to prominence in pop at the start of the '80s. As a founding member of Depeche Mode, Vince lit the touch paper for a sonic explosion, and then fanned the flames with Alison Moyet in Yazoo. He continues to be a pioneering force in synth-led music right through to the present day, most notably in the form of his 30-year-plus songwriting relationship with Andy Bell in Erasure.
There is much to discuss on this podcast as we ponder our past work together, the future of our craft and our mutual love of the world of electronic music, so let’s dive in!

EP08: Kim Wilde

EP08: Kim Wilde

Kim Wilde has been a glamorous pop star from her teenage years. Her father is Marty Wilde, 60’s pop star, who’s family have become a lineage of excellence. Ricky, Kim’s brother, helped to write and produce a string of massive hits on the 80’s including Kids In America, Chequered Love and You Keep Me Hangin’ On, both in the UK and across the world and the US. She is also an author, radio DJ and television presenter, specialising in gardening and her love of wildlife. Martyn has toured extensively with her, and they have become close friends since Kim revealed her love of Heaven 17’s Penthouse and Pavement album as a 16 year old! She sang on the 3rd BEF album in 2015 and still tours and records extensively and successfully. She is as dynamic, intelligent and lovable as ever…

EP07: Glen Matlock

EP07: Glen Matlock

Glen Matlock is one of Martyn’s oldest friends in the music industry, having connected on the Iggy Pop European tour in 1979, when The Human League were plying support. His good-humour and kind mentorship of the young THL at that time helped us get through an extraordinary period.
He is best known for being the bass guitarist in the original line-up of the punk rock band the Sex Pistols. He is credited as a co-author on 10 of the 12 songs on Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, although he had left the band before the album's recording sessions commenced.
Since leaving the Sex Pistols in 1977, he has performed with several other bands, as well presented his own work. After the death of his replacement in the Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious, Matlock has resumed bass guitar duties for subsequent Sex Pistols reunions, including the 1996 Filthy Lucre Tour
Recently Glen has performed with B.E.F as a guest singer, and Martyn and he have become close buddies once more.
He knows everyone!
Enjoy…

EP06: Ana Matronic

EP06: Ana Matronic

There is much intelligence and playfulness in Ana Lynch’s creative life. As Ana Matronic in the Scissor Sisters, she is an iconic figure in the glam-art pop-rock scene. She is also currently a Radio 2 DJ specialising in the wide world of disco, and with her husband, Seth Kirby, she creates large-scale ambient visual performances.

She burst onto the scene as the female co-lead vocalist for the Scissor Sisters. She has stated that, in her eyes, the objective of the band was "about people displaying their fantasies on the outside, trying to break out of the everyday, and look like their dreams". In The Scissorhood, the fan community for Scissor Sisters, those fans who hold a special affinity for Ana are known as "nuns". Fans who are attracted to Ana, even if they might not usually be attracted to women, term themselves "Anasexual".

As an author, she has published a book entitled Robot Universe: Legendary Automatons and Androids from the Ancient World to the Distant Future, and she is fiercely proud of her Celtic roots.

This episode is a fascinating insight into her alternate world of robots, sexuality, futurology and just plain fun.

EP05: Graham Fellows

EP05: Graham Fellows

Graham Fellows went to the same school as Martyn (different year though) - King Edward VII Grammar School in Sheffield. From his website...

'Graham David Fellows has been a paperboy, a champion mouse breeder, a builder's labourer, a barman, a teenage pop sensation, a stage actor, a soap star (well, a few episodes of Coronation Street in 1983), a milkman, a character comedian, a film director, a film star, and a singer/songwriter. Here you can find out more about all the above, read song lyrics, view previously unavailable archive material, plus current info about what Graham is planning next.  In the meantime, you should know that despite being left handed Graham has written..

"The finest lyrics known to man" The Independent.'

His most loved character is John Shuttleworth, with whom Martyn has appeared on his Radio 2 show, and also as a guest at the London Palladium

The discussion covers much of his eclectic career, including the number one pop artist Jilted John.

Oooof...

EP04: Sandie Shaw

EP04: Sandie Shaw

Sandie Shaw is literally a living legend. She is one of the most successful British female singers of the 1960s, she had three UK number one singles with "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me" (1964), "Long Live Love" (1965) and "Puppet on a String" (1967). With "Puppet on a String", she became the first British entry to win the Eurovision Song Contest. Martyn invited her to record a song  for the British Electric Foundation album 'Music Of Quality And Distinction Vol 1', for which she recorded a version of "Anyone Who Had a Heart".

Sandie also featured on MQD Vol 3, and Martyn and Sandie have remained great friends for almost 30 years. Their conversation is wide ranging and often hilarious - not to be missed...

EP03: Glenn Gregory & Paul Bower

EP03: Glenn Gregory & Paul Bower

Glenn Gregory and Paul Bower are Martyn's oldest and best friends. Martyn met Paul when they both became trainee managers at the Co-op in Sheffield, and Paul introduced Martyn to Glenn to a youth drama project called Meatwhistle, which was to change his life. Glenn became a lifelong friend and collaborator - apart from various hilarious one-day-only bands created at Meatwhistle (not for public consumption), they went on to form Heaven 17 who are still alive and kicking and touring constantly to the current day.

There are reminiscences form the earliest days of their friendship, including a rare performance of several of the legendary Musical Vomit songbook...

EP01: Richard Hawley

EP01: Richard Hawley

Richard Hawley is a Sheffield musical legend and fellow Sheffield Wednesday fan. He is a critically-acclaimed guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer. Hawley initially found success as a member of Britpop band Longpigs in the 1990's, and formerly Treebound Story. Richard was asked to play with Pulp by his close friend and Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker.  Since then he has created many of his own solo albums to great acclaim and winning several awards, and even been responsible for a stage musical featuring his songs called 'Standing at the Sky's Edge'. His work proudly represents the mood and emotional meaning of growing up and living in Sheffield. He is also an in-demand session player, having collaborated with many world famous recording artists. Our discussion took place in a working men's club in Sheffield, and certainly tugged at my heartstrings...
