We are given an example of the paths souls can take, by Jesus, in the Gospels. One person who took an unusual, according to Scripture, path is Elijah of the Old Testament who according to Jesus reincarnated as John the Baptist in the New Testament. This is our introduction to Elijah before he is carried away in what we would call a UFO.

Rather than face civil war, the divided kingdom has more golden calves set up as their gods who delivered them from enslavement in Egypt.

He chooses man's words rather than what he just heard directly from God; he is SO close to God, he's apparently granted in person appearances from The Almighty, according to the narrative, to his peril. Whether an actual historical event or an ancient parable. We are granted the opportunity to consider the paths we choose in life and how they are altered by the things, such as faith as well as life in general are determined, directed & often detoured. When we choose what is not righteous and we know it (measuring righteousness completely by your own opinion of what is right or wrong with one basic rule of, "Love your neighbor as yourself"; in essence: don't do it if you wouldn't want it done to you)

More contradictions of the Old Testament are borne out as David's child pays with it's life for David's corrupt deeds of covetousness, theft, adultery, and murder.

David displays so pretty low down dirty tactics in getting what he wants including another man's wife and another man's life.

Treachery leads to unity among the tribes to bring them together under the leadership of David.

The Israelites are divided over who is to succeed Saul.

Saul takes his own life rather than face what the Philistines might have done to him after they defeat his forces in battle.

David and his army have repeatedly plundered surrounding areas but now find themselves plundered. They successfully recover the spoils of war but very quickly begin to turn on each other in what reads as a greedy grab for the goods.

As the Philistines prepare their forces for battle they reject David joining forces with their army, wisely recognizing that in treachery he could turn on them to curry favor with his own people he has sought asylum from.

In hot pursuit of David, Saul hunts him and his army through the mountains trying to break the prophecy of Samuel, that a successor to the throne he sits on is already chosen & emerging.

David lied to get help while on the run and the priest who helped him pays the price.

Powerless Poor People Enabling Entitled Elite Exemption . David breaks religious laws and ordinances but accomplishes big picture goals in doing so.

Upon conquering the Promised Land the congregation is instructed to appoint entire cities of refuge for those guilty of manslaughter so they avoid the death penalty as murderers.

Just as when Moses appointed judges to help manage the legal issues of the people without first consulting God, Joshua (the new human leader of the congregation) is deceived into making a peace treaty with some of the inhabitants of the Promised Land.

Jesus is condemned & crucified, and his body buried & put under guard.

Defeat at war is blamed on idolatry & now victory is attributed to faithfulness, but it reads more & more like 20/20 hindsight to rationalize both. The phrase “as it is this day” reveals the presence of revisions of the narrative while reflecting on past events.

The Lord can part the Red Sea, the Jordan River, feed the people with manna, and even crack open the ground to devour the unfaithful yet we see human hands carrying out the death penalty on those who offend in religious dogma; what happened to ‘thou shall not kill’?? 🤔

Morality is not a constant unchanging thing and the efforts of Rahab, the “working girl” are an example of that fact.

Circumcision isn’t the first or only surgery mentioned in the Bible.

Just as some statues previously given were labeled as “forever” and yet have been lost to time, the people are now commanded to set up memorials as reference points “forever” yet also seem to be lost to time, or perhaps covetousness.

The congregation is treated to a supernatural crossing of the Jordan River to enter the “Promised Land”.

Jesus uses parables to show us what judgment day will be like individually and collectively; emphasizing that along the way God shows up in our lives to see if we walk the walk or just talk the talk.

Some of the actions of the forefathers that went unopposed are now being declared as worthy of curses by Moses. Inconsistencies that seem to me to be almost certainly NOT from God.

Christians should contrast these rules about divorce with what Jesus tells us about acceptable grounds for divorce. Here it’s more patriarchy but Jesus balances the scales.

Once the “promised land” is occupied and colonized the tithes are to be offered and the ritual declaration of the land being given to the people by God is to be proclaimed.

Deuteronomy Chapter24 JUST declared children aren’t to be put to death for their parents sins, yet this chapter demands genocide for the descendants of a previous generation’s offenses; as inconsistent as ever.

Jesus draws a distinction between how people caught in adultery should be punished and it’s a stark contrast to what’s required in the Old Testament.

One of the first clear examples of a prophecy that Jesus will come and bring the Red Letters to us.

Strange rules laid out that define when it’s ok to massacre, rape, lynch and even kill obese children!
