Ep 157 - Cheryl Strauss Einhorn- Becoming a Better Decision Maker

"How do I improve my results?"

This is a question we all ask ourselves, whether it's in our cycling and triathlon performance, or professionally. While there are a number of ways we can improve our results, the crux of this question boils down to the core of: How do I become a better decision maker? In this episode we talk with Cheryl Strauss Einhorn to learn how to improve our decision making process by improving the process itself, and learning how to better tackle and recognize our blind spots, biases, and poor practices.

About Cheryl: Cheryl Strauss Einhorn founded Decisive, a decision sciences company that trains people and teams in complex problem solving and decision-making skills using the AREA Method. AREA is an evidence-based decision-making system that uniquely controls for and counters cognitive bias to expand knowledge while improving judgment. Cheryl developed AREA during her two decades as an award-winning investigative journalist writing for publications ranging from The New York Times and Foreign Policy Magazine to Barron’s and The Stanford Social Innovation Review. Cheryl teaches at Cornell University and has authored two books Problem Solved, A Powerful System for Making Complex Decisions with Confidence and Conviction, about personal and professional decision-making, and Investing In Financial Research, A Decision-Making System for Better Results about financial and investment decisions. Social media can be a very tricky world...so what's an athlete and coach to do? We sat down to talk about maneuvering through the social media sea, and how to be a better coach and advocate to your athletes and clients, with Andrew Coates. Andrew has been one of the positive and upbeat lights in fitness social media the last few years, gaining "overnight success" since the pandemic. Eloquent, well spoken, and always looking for the good in things, Andrew shares with us some of his perspectives on building a thriving coaching practice, and how to help you clients get the best results possible... sometimes, by connecting them with another coach or professional who can serve them better for that realm- and why BOTH of you will win big.

143- Zoe Backstedt, Chris Peden & Magnus Backstedt on Strength Training & Performance Development

If you haven't heard of Zoe Backstedt yet, you may not be much into the juniors levels of racing. But I really hope that todays episode with MULTI-DISCIPLINE and Multi-World Champion Zoe, and her performance team, will help you understand the massive wave of changes to how training is done for performance in cycling are happening.... and it's all coming as a trickle-up from the juniors. Thanks in large part to forward thinking coaches and parents, who, instead of relying on "research to tell them what works", would rather look for inspiration and ideas from other sports and realms of performance, to identify trends that are working.

In this weeks episode, forward looking folks are Strength Coach Chris Peden and Magnus Backstedt, who have sought out far better ways to help Zoe attain her "best self", through practicing a variety of sports, utilizing consistent strength training (not how everyone thinks or does it), and allowing Zoe to focus on the overall goal of ENJOYMENT of the process, not just results.

This interview is such a breath of fresh air in todays world of "research based practices" and "technology driving performance", as rather than taking a reductionist point of view, Zoe, Chris, and Magnus look for things that will help keep it fun, stay on track of the overall performance goals, all while allowing Zoe to be her best self, and have quite a bit of fun while doing so!

Ep. 136- Getting Started in Strength Training at the End of Your Season

As the season winds down, many of us are already thinking about hitting the weight to build the stronger and improved "you" for next season. While the inclination is to jump right into weight training and adding more weight to the bar, or repetitions to the set, there are actually a few things you should know if you're looking to significantly improve yourself to better performances and PR's next season.

These days it can be really difficult to go against the grain of commonly accepted practices...even when just asking the question of why we are doing something at all! While I've certainly not always been the most eloquent in addressing some of these items, I do try very hard not to be a jerk about it. This week we talk about being a contrarian and not a jerk, and how in order for us to continue to progress, we need to continue to ask "Why?" With sincerity, and the true curiousity of a greenhorn.

Ep 113- Dr. Chris Myers- Triathlon Training with Power

For many of us, Training and Racing with a Power meter, has been a bit of a training bible, helping us to get more out of our time on the bike. Previously here on the SSCT Podcast we spoke with Hunter Allen about the myths of training with power for cyclists. . .but we didn't really get into the challenges that Triathletes face as they try to train with power on the run, and in the swim.

Dr. Chris Myers has co-authored the book that will help triathletes of all background and abilities move to master their power numbers, and be able to use power across all 3 sports, to dial in their training and racing.

Chris and I spoke at length about his new book Triathlon Training with Power, why he wrote it, differences in power parameters, and understanding what actually matters when interpreting the power for each sport.

From Vasa Trainer and Stryd Pods, to Power Paddles for the swim, this episode has you covered!

Ep 105 Allen Lim- Coaches: Be Students, Not Teachers

Allen Lim may be most known for Skratch labs and his fantastic talks, but there is far more to the man whose helped change how we endurance athletes look at nutrition and fueling!

In this episode Allen shares some deep insights into Grit vs. Stubbornness, learning delayed gratification, Focusing on the EFFORT- not the results.

Have we, as a society lost the love of progress and have become too focused on results?

Setting/mood state, who you share your food with, and their effect on your blood sugar (!)

How ONE bad apple on a team/group can ruin the entire bunch.

Modern day science and it's reductionism, and the importance of emergence of human beings in the equation.

And why we need to "Teach Methodology, Not Facts" when it comes to evidence based coaching.

Ep 104- Margin of Safety Part 1

Those who've poked their noses into the world of value investing will recognize this term, but we're not talking about stocks.... we're talking about YOU and your training!

In this episode we use the comparison of the 3 kinds of stock traders:

"Flash Boys" (a la Michael Lewis's book) Day Traders Value Investors

to help get across to the 3 different kinds of endurance athletes:

Tech Geeks/ Super mathematicians Evidence Based Know Thyself

And how through better self understanding of what kind of endurance athlete you are, how you can best guide yourself to better build in a Margin of Safety in your training, by training less, and focusing on the things that help you most.

Ep 101- Greg Choat: When to Get More Aggressive with Your Bike Fit

Greg Choat is a performance specialist based out of Las Vegas who has worked with a number of athletes from a variety of sports, ranging from UFC and Olympic level Badminton to cyclists and triathletes in the amateur and professional levels. In this episode our main topic is when and how to get more aggressive with your bike fit during the season. The answer will surprise many cyclists and triathletes, and bring into light a few really important considerations which are missed when talking about "getting more aero".

In this episode we also talk about:

-Explosion of indoor cycling (via Corona, Zwift, and Peloton)
-The difference between riding indoors vs. riding outside
-His deep dive the last 4 years into the nooks and crannies of bike fitting (After nearly 20 years of bike fitting)
-The horrible bike fits that can be seen at Professional Triathlon's and TT races (and why they prevail despite our knowing better)
-Why your musculoskeletal FUNCTION will dictate your on-bike FORM
-Why you shouldn't deadlift off the floor as a cyclist or triathlete...at least not to start

And much more!

Ep 89- Erin Carson on Strength Training for Triathlon Performance

Erin Carson, whom many know as the coach at EC Fit Strength Boulder, is one of the few strength coaches in the endurance world who has been able to interlace strength, performance, and long-term athlete development for those she coaches of ALL ages and abilities.

In this episode Erin and I talk a lot of the details of strength training for performance, and how it is very different than just picking things up and putting them down.

In particular, we talk about how it takes time to get under load. This is something many endurance athletes and their well-meaning coaches miss, as they rush to add kilos to the bar or to load a movement...

It depends on your previous strength training and loading experiences.

Just because you can produce force, doesn't mean that your tissues are able to handle those forces: For example, in 2019 there were 7 of top 20 men in pro triathlon has sacral stress fractures, due to tissues not being ready. Talk about a completely avoidable training related injury!

We cover this, and a number of other really important, but not oft talked about parts of strength training for endurance athletes, and how to program and progress for performance where it matters!

Ep 83- Hunter Allen- Myths in Training with Power

Hunter Allen is known around the world for his work in helping make the power meter into the incredibly powerful training tool that it is today. His work with Dr. Andy Coggan to write the foundational book "Training & Racing with a Power meter" has revolutionized how cyclists and triathletes approach their training (and racing)....Yet there are still a few areas that have either misconceptions about, or straight up are being done incorrectly thanks to "common knowledge" (aka heresy!)

In this episode we cover:

What myths Hunter wishes would just DIE, when it comes to training with power

- How unlike Formula 1 racing, where there is a "trickle down" effect of the technology, in cycling it's a "trickle up and out" effect from coaches and amateur racers
- How power based training can allow you to ride WITHOUT staring at the numbers the entire ride
- Why the center of your training should be FUN, with numbers giving guidance to some of the ride, so you can get what you need training wise
- Why you DON'T HAVE to hit the exact numbers on every ride
- Why if you're using power, you NEED a bike fit from a great bike fitter, to really help you harness & use those numbers
- The skills that EVERY cyclist must learn in order to improve. . . with or without power
-Why preventing poor habit from the beginning is integral to success

and more!

Ep 81-Miguel Aragoncillo: Improve Performance and Movement By Going Deeper

Ep 81-Miguel Aragoncillo: Improve Performance and Movement By Going Deeper

Miguel Aragoncillo is a movement and performance specialist, with a deep wealth of knowledge. We sat down to talk about some of the deep rabbit holes in performance vs. regular "strength training".  We spoke about his seeking to learn more about the off-the-beaten-path books and resources during one of his internships, and how his curiosity has helped him grow massively as a professional.

From taking an internship with no guarantee of employment after, to learning to take asymmetrical risks, Miguel has been pushing the boundaries as a movement professional by going DEEPER, instead of wider.

We also discussed:

-Evolution and it's role in movement for an individual
-Right Side/Left Side of brain and their roles in movement
-How simpl
