Ep 157 - Cheryl Strauss Einhorn- Becoming a Better Decision Maker
"How do I improve my results?"
This is a question we all ask ourselves, whether it's in our cycling and triathlon performance, or professionally. While there are a number of ways we can improve our results, the crux of this question boils down to the core of: How do I become a better decision maker? In this episode we talk with Cheryl Strauss Einhorn to learn how to improve our decision making process by improving the process itself, and learning how to better tackle and recognize our blind spots, biases, and poor practices.
About Cheryl: Cheryl Strauss Einhorn founded Decisive, a decision sciences company that trains people and teams in complex problem solving and decision-making skills using the AREA Method. AREA is an evidence-based decision-making system that uniquely controls for and counters cognitive bias to expand knowledge while improving judgment. Ep 148- Joanna Yates: Stepping Into The Rider You Want to Become
Ep 148- Joanna Yates: Stepping Into The Rider You Want to Become
For many of us, the challenge of cycling is not only about getting faster and fitter, but also about our evolution and growth as a human being; being pushed outside of our comfort zone, and to achieve new levels of abilities through our on-bike endeavors. And while power meters, heart rate monitors, and social apps like Strava and Zwift allow us to measure our outputs, what often is not measured, is how we use (or don't use) the process to improve.
Joanna Yates is a MTB Skills Coach out of Sedona Arizona, who is a living example of embracing the process and using the process, not the output, as a measure to growing towards our full potential. We hung out to talk MTB skills development, how to use the bike to become a better version of yourself, and the importance of stepping up to the challenges with a cool, calm, and collected energy.

Ep 147 It. Takes. Time. - Why Strength Training Gains Cannot Be Rushed
Ep 147 It. Takes. Time. - Why Strength Training Gains Cannot Be Rushed
Why do endurance athletes rush into heavy lifting? Well, much of it has to do with our misunderstanding of how strength training works, and the processes that need to happen for us to safely and effectively lift heavy stuff. This weeks episode will help you have a better understanding of why we should ramp into heavier weights, as well as why your energy system trainings (intervals), seem to have a much faster time to improvement (because they do!).

Ep 146- Kriss Hendy of Strength for Endurance: Strength Training to Harness Your Potential
When it comes to building top performances (regardless of whether you're a pro or a "recreational" endurance athlete), there are a lot of considerations that go far beyond your primary sport, and training "for sports results". Kriss Hendy of Strength for Endurance and I sat down and talked how endurance athletes can get a lot more out of their training, not just through strength training, but by having a better understanding of you, as a whole.
We cover:
Why you cannot just do a "lower body + core" workout...Gotta train the whole
High performance begins with learning, and mastering, the basics
You cannot out train poor tissues and postures
The importance of learning how to land (before you hit those box jumps)
Global health keys to pay attention to
and much, much more.

We sat down to talk about maneuvering through the social media sea, and how to be a better coach and advocate to your athletes and clients, with Andrew Coates. Andrew has been one of the positive and upbeat lights in fitness social media the last few years, gaining "overnight success" since the pandemic. Eloquent, well spoken, and always looking for the good in things, Andrew shares with us some of his perspectives on building a thriving coaching practice, and how to help you clients get the best results possible... sometimes, by connecting them with another coach or professional who can serve them better for that realm- and why BOTH of you will win big.

143- Zoe Backstedt, Chris Peden & Magnus Backstedt on Strength Training & Performance Development
If you haven't heard of Zoe Backstedt yet, you may not be much into the juniors levels of racing. But I really hope that todays episode with MULTI-DISCIPLINE and Multi-World Champion Zoe, and her performance team, will help you understand the massive wave of changes to how training is done for performance in cycling are happening.... and it's all coming as a trickle-up from the juniors. Thanks in large part to forward thinking coaches and parents, who, instead of relying on "research to tell them what works", would rather look for inspiration and ideas from other sports and realms of performance, to identify trends that are working.
In this weeks episode, forward looking folks are Strength Coach Chris Peden and Magnus Backstedt, who have sought out far better ways to help Zoe attain her "best self", through practicing a variety of sports, utilizing consistent strength training (not how everyone thinks or does it), and allowing Zoe to focus on the overall goal of ENJOYMENT of the process, not just results.
This interview is such a breath of fresh air in todays world of "research based practices" and "technology driving performance", as rather than taking a reductionist point of view, Zoe, Chris, and Magnus look for things that will help keep it fun, stay on track of the overall performance goals, all while allowing Zoe to be her best self, and have quite a bit of fun while doing so!

This episode shares a few thoughts on End of Season Burnout and fatigue, and offers a few uncommon approaches in how to deal with it. While some are uncommon simply in their timing, others just aren't main stream (yet).

Ep 131- Want High Performance? Master this.
Surf on any social media page or even on popular fitness blogs, and they'll sell you the idea that in order to get to high performance you need to do some crazy complex workout program. Oh, and don't forget the ego boosting or busting super complex exercises that get tons of likes on Instagram and Facebook (Hello high box jump and heavy squat and deadlift!).
But if you're after real performance enhancement, and peak performances, it's actually a very different story.
You can't handle the truth! Because it's way simpler than those great liars...(errr marketers), tell you it is. -Hat tip to Seth Godin on this one.

Ep 129 Don Larkin- Missed Opportunities in Strength Training for Cyclists & Triathletes
Don Larkin is a strength coach based in Harrisburg, Pa, who has been working with endurance athletes of all ages and abilities for over 10 years. We sat down with Don to talk about how to be a more savvy consumer of information and "advice" that we see given online every day, that can lead us astray from what we actually need, or need to be focusing on. Questions covered include:
How to actually improve fitness & strength
Why strength training is often skipped or neglected by endurance athletes
How to look at yourself or your athlete as a whole
How to be a better coach to your athletes
What you need to identify early on in a strength training program or swim/bike/run program to help an athlete improve and stay healthy
How to interview a coach
And perhaps most importantly, the critical skill of building a quality network of professionals with complimentary skillsets, and not hesitating to refer out.
This one's a great one!

We dive into the world of "specialization" and discuss whether it's helping us push training forward, or perhaps not having as big of a positive effect as we would think, and some various ways to help us learn more about movement, the human body, and how to develop strong, healthy, and lifelong athletes.
This is a great episode that you won't want to miss!

Ep 126- 2022: A Focus on LESS, and more depth
Ep 126- 2022: A Focus on LESS, and more depth
This weeks episode is a short one, as I share the focus for 2022:
Instead of more (books read, content produced) We're going to go deeper, and re-read some of the most influential books read, re-take the best courses, and produce a few new courses ourselves.
It's not minimalism, but rather the ability to dig 8 inches wide, and go 5 miles deep.

Ep 125- Chris Peden: The Power of Focus
Ep 125- Chris Peden: The Power of Focus
When it comes to making cyclists stronger on the bike via strength training, it's important to look at strength training from a different lens. Chris Peden does that...but he wasn't always a cyclist- far from it in fact.
In this episode Chris Shares his experiences that brought him to cycling a bit later in his athletic career, how he views strength training for endurance athletes, and some fantastic insights to help you get far more from your strength training, rather than just more weight on the bar or more reps.
This one's a fantastic one!

Ep 123- Be a Contrarian, Not a Jerk
Ep 123- Be a Contrarian, Not a Jerk
These days it can be really difficult to go against the grain of commonly accepted practices...even when just asking the question of why we are doing something at all! While I've certainly not always been the most eloquent in addressing some of these items, I do try very hard not to be a jerk about it. This week we talk about being a contrarian and not a jerk, and how in order for us to continue to progress, we need to continue to ask "Why?" With sincerity, and the true curiousity of a greenhorn.

Ep 122- Research without context = Dangerous?
Ep 122- Research without context = Dangerous?
When it comes to training these days, it seems that "research leads the way".
For most, this makes sense- the research shows us what works, and then we move in that direction....right?
Not exactly.
More often than not, the researchers are looking to figure out why what the best coaches in the field of performance are doing, works.
In the case of strength training for cycling and triathlon, researchers are just now catching up to the use of heavy weights in strength training for performance...but there is a lot of context that is missing in these research articles, much of which can leave YOU at risk of a serious injury!
This week, we take a look at recent posts by popular and well-meaning social media coaches, which lack context and understanding of strength training, it's risks to you, and what you should be looking to do to help you see performance gains from your strength training.

Ep 121- When & How to Progress Your Strength Training
Ah, progression in your (or your athletes) strength training: Easy peasy! Add more weight, or, find a more advanced exercise.
Right?
Well, actually..... In this weeks episode Coach Brodie explains the 4 ways to progress your strength training, and the important criteria that must be met before even considering changing the programming. And the "common ways" of changing the program? Aren't the best options- most of the time. It depends.

Ep 120- Strength Training for Triathlon- How to do it
Ep 120- Strength Training for Triathlon- How to do it
How should triathletes approach strength training?
Should they lift until their muscles are burning?
Should they do "sport-specific" movements that look like their running or swimming?
Do they target "limiter" muscles, like the triceps and calves?
What should their strength training periodization look like?
In this weeks episode we cover all of the above, as well as the top 3 mistakes triathletes make within their workouts, that leaves them programming their muscles (and bodies) for the exact opposite effect than that which they want.

SSCT 117- Colin McKenna- What Does Strength Training for Cycling Performance actually entail?
This week we sat down to talk with Fast man Colin McKenna, a 2x HVTraining athlete, who's seen absolutely phenomenal results following the strength training for cycling performance approaches here at HVT.
Here's the thing that pretty much no one believes: Colin has gotten stupid strong and fast, not having used a weight more than 45#.....He's not the only one:
Carolyn G. who has been in the Big Gear Blueprint program since March, has also gotten really fast, having set lifetime PR's after 5 weeks off the bike, while continuing just her strength training and doing some free-form running!
Today, Colin shares with you his journey over the last 20 or so months, how he's progressed, some of the obstacles he's faced, as well as the many accolades- and disbelief by others- that he could get so strong and fast without "lifting heavy shit", spending hours in the gym, or getting sore at all from his strength training. So much so, that a number of his rides have been tagged as "e-bike rides" on Strava" (They're not, he has witnesses, too).

Ep 115- Chris Abbott: The Setup Is The Most Important Part
Ep 115- Chris Abbott: The Setup Is The Most Important Part
What is the ONE thing that can have the biggest impact on whether you succeed in something, or fail?
On a macro level, a huge determination of success or failure, and especially so the speed of which you achieve or fail- is the setup.
Chris Abbott is the co-host of the Breakthrough Secrets Podcast, and has been in the fitness industry for nearly 13 years. In this time he's gone from a trainee, to a trainer, to a gym owner, and has had his fair share of success along the way- and some failures as well.
Today Chris shares with us some insights as to his mental maps which he's developed through his journey, which have helped him speed-up his ability to help his clients, and progress himself as a human and as a coach. The anchor of this mind-map may surprise many, yet it makes complete sense:
The Setup is the most important part...

Ep 113- Dr. Chris Myers- Triathlon Training with Power
Ep 113- Dr. Chris Myers- Triathlon Training with Power
For many of us, Training and Racing with a Power meter, has been a bit of a training bible, helping us to get more out of our time on the bike. Previously here on the SSCT Podcast we spoke with Hunter Allen about the myths of training with power for cyclists. . .but we didn't really get into the challenges that Triathletes face as they try to train with power on the run, and in the swim.
Dr. Chris Myers has co-authored the book that will help triathletes of all background and abilities move to master their power numbers, and be able to use power across all 3 sports, to dial in their training and racing.
Chris and I spoke at length about his new book Triathlon Training with Power, why he wrote it, differences in power parameters, and understanding what actually matters when interpreting the power for each sport.
From Vasa Trainer and Stryd Pods, to Power Paddles for the swim, this episode has you covered!

Ep 112- Strength Training for Cyclists- avoid following the trends
With Labor Day behind us, many cyclists are turning to base training, which for a growing number of cyclists, means hitting the weights. While hitting the weight should provide a big boon to your on-bike performance, many are making a few simple mistakes that are costing them the very things they're after from their strength training.
In this episode we talk about strength training for cyclists, and how to avoid the mistakes that following the current trends will lead you to.

In this episode we sat down and talked with Matt about his latest book "The Comeback Quotient", how he sees tragedy & resilience being the same playbook, the importance of getting comfortable with uncertainty, and how his experiences as an athlete and writer have helped him as a coach.

Ep 110- Strength Training for Cyclists & Triathlete Masters Ages 50+
Strength Training is here to stay. It's finally getting attention in the mass media, which means articles videos, and lots of content from well-meaning coaches and professional journalists. . . While this is a step in the right direction the vast majority of these resources and the information within, are aimed towards endurance athletes in their 20's, 30's and 40's.
From how to train, to what exercises to do and when, Masters athletes over the age of 50 are often not included in the conversation, despite having different needs and some changes to the training approaches.
In this episode we talk about the important considerations you need to take as your enter your 5th decade and beyond, to help you live a truly strong, fit, healthy, and resilient active lifestyle with the help of appropriately designed strength training plans for you and your body.

Those aged 50+

Ep 108- The (Now) Absurdity of Evidence Based Practice
Ep 108- The (Now) Absurdity of Evidence Based Practice
Science, it seems, has become the be-all, end-all for everything training these days.
"Show me the research proving this works" riders and coaches alike proclaim, while talking about training approaches. Many cyclists and triathletes these days outright refuse to do a specific workout- or even strength exercise- if there isn't a research article "proving it works" or "showing it's valuable.
This has now reached "official absurdity levels", as the endurance training world has apparently lost their northern star of the training world: The ONE subject matter who, well, matters:
YOU.
In this episode we discuss why this mentality is a problem, how it's doing you a disservice, and how research is often driven by whats popular/ buzzworthy in the public, and a number of other outside factors.
Research is useful, but only when it's used with the right mentality and applied well.

Tech Geeks/ Mathematicians
Evidence based
Know Thyself
Creating the margin of safety in your training for improved results will take 3 different routes for each of these kinds of athletes. Some will focus on training related things, and others on non-related items. But finding the right thing to focus on will have a huge impact on whether or not you can create that margin of safety in your training to see greater results with less time, or not.

Ep 105 Allen Lim- Coaches: Be Students, Not Teachers
Allen Lim may be most known for Skratch labs and his fantastic talks, but there is far more to the man whose helped change how we endurance athletes look at nutrition and fueling!
In this episode Allen shares some deep insights into Grit vs. Stubbornness, learning delayed gratification, Focusing on the EFFORT- not the results.
Have we, as a society lost the love of progress and have become too focused on results?
Setting/mood state, who you share your food with, and their effect on your blood sugar (!)
How ONE bad apple on a team/group can ruin the entire bunch.
Modern day science and it's reductionism, and the importance of emergence of human beings in the equation.
And why we need to "Teach Methodology, Not Facts" when it comes to evidence based coaching.

Ep 104- Margin of Safety Part 1
Those who've poked their noses into the world of value investing will recognize this term, but we're not talking about stocks.... we're talking about YOU and your training!

Day Traders
Value Investors
to help get across to the 3 different kinds of endurance athletes:
Tech Geeks/ Super mathematicians
Evidence Based

Ep 102- Learn More From Old Things
Ep 102- Learn More From Old Things
Over the last 15 years or so, there has been a strong tendency to only rely, or to rely heavily, on the newest, latest, and supposedly "greatest". . . but in doing so, many coaches, athletes, and general health & fitness folks have missed out on the huge wealth of knowledge that has been accumulated to date.
Certainly, some things we have learned from experience are not as useful or applicable as previously thought, yet many other fundamentals have been learned, refined and practiced to far better levels than what those in modern society would.
NEW dominated old, and once we have used something, read it, or learned it through a passing or two, it's on searching for the next new idea or thing.
In todays episode we talk a little about the importance of re-reading or re-taking old courses, finding sound information in books of yesteryear, and internalizing the truth that: There is very little or nothing new under the sun, and in our micro-focused world, we tend to miss out on easy wins and important details in the macro.

The answer will surprise many cyclists and triathletes, and bring into light a few really important considerations which are missed when talking about "getting more aero".
In this episode we also talk about:
-Explosion of indoor cycling (via Corona, Zwift, and Peloton)
-The difference between riding indoors vs. riding outside
-His deep dive the last 4 years into the nooks and crannies of bike fitting (After nearly 20 years of bike fitting)
-The horrible bike fits that can be seen at Professional Triathlon's and TT races (and why they prevail despite our knowing better)
-Why your musculoskeletal FUNCTION will dictate your on-bike FORM
-Why you shouldn't deadlift off the floor as a cyclist or triathlete...at least not to start

Ep 98- The Most Important Thing

Ep 96- Where'd You Hear That?!??
This episode we get into 4 unfounded and completely unreasonable "common sense" and popular items making their way around the internet these days, and why each one of them is absolutely ridiculous.
Yes, the internet is full of "information", but without a gatekeeper, fact-checker, or better understanding of the foundational knowledge needed to actually understand what's flying, we're all prone to follow incredibly bad advice.

Ep 95- Steve Palladino: Running with Power- Train Smarter, Not Harder
Running with a power meter may seem a bit, well, odd, as many tend to think of power meters as being these relatively big pieces of equipment. But thanks to STRYD Power Meter, runners from around the world are now able to dial in their running with the help of power. But translating the data and HOW to utilize it takes a very different skillset and understanding than that of cycling.
Steve Palladino has been helping runners of all abilities learn how to train smarter through power based training, since the introduction of the running power meter. In this episode Steve shares the metrics you need to pay attention to to help you get more out of your time running, a few of which may surprise you.
To learn more on running with power, be sure to check out Steve's Facebook group, Palladino Power Project, for fantastic information and content!

Ep 94- Is Your Sleep Keeping You From Getting Faster?
Are you looking for the latest and greatest "recovery" tool?
Thinking about buying a theragun, or those fancy recovery boots?
Sure you can spend your hard earned cash on some things that you can hold in your hand....or.... you could spend some time doing something that actually has a far bigger impact on your recovery and adaptation:
Sleep.
This week we talk about the top 3 reasons how your lack of sleep/sleep quality is keeping you from gaining the fitness that you are training for, and 5 simple ways you can turn the tables on your training, recovery, and fitness- most of them free, and the others far less expensive than a theragun.

Ep 93- Tim Robinson - There Are No Secrets; How Many Camels Are You Worth?
Tim Robinson was born into a "coaching & teaching family", and has found his own passion and love in coaching. After having worked in the Division 2 football world, has transitioned to helping coaches reach more athletes via the TrainHeroic platform. Tim and I sat down to talk about coaching and how to be the best coach you can be.
But our conversation went so much deeper than to be only for coaches, we went deep on topics that effect anyone who is involved in fitness, for themselves or others, and wants to leverage fitness to help them perform more optimally in their own lives.
Perhaps the two biggest takeaways from this conversation:
1. Understanding how to communicate
2. Becoming a better listener and "interviewer"- as a coach, and human being.
If you looking to become a better human being and coach, this episode is a must listen!

Ep 89- Erin Carson on Strength Training for Triathlon Performance
Ep 89- Erin Carson on Strength Training for Triathlon Performance
Erin Carson, whom many know as the coach at EC Fit Strength Boulder, is one of the few strength coaches in the endurance world who has been able to interlace strength, performance, and long-term athlete development for those she coaches of ALL ages and abilities.
In this episode Erin and I talk a lot of the details of strength training for performance, and how it is very different than just picking things up and putting them down.
In particular, we talk about how it takes time to get under load. This is something many endurance athletes and their well-meaning coaches miss, as they rush to add kilos to the bar or to load a movement...
It depends on your previous strength training and loading experiences.
Just because you can produce force, doesn't mean that your tissues are able to handle those forces: For example, in 2019 there were 7 of top 20 men in pro triathlon has sacral stress fractures, due to tissues not being ready. Talk about a completely avoidable training related injury!
We cover this, and a number of other really important, but not oft talked about parts of strength training for endurance athletes, and how to program and progress for performance where it matters!

What do you need to do as a cyclist or triathlete to train your "core" to actually see performance benefits?
And, why many who say they're "evidenced based" actually fail the litmus test, when it comes to training "the core" for performance...

Ep 83- Hunter Allen- Myths in Training with Power
Ep 83- Hunter Allen- Myths in Training with Power
Hunter Allen is known around the world for his work in helping make the power meter into the incredibly powerful training tool that it is today. His work with Dr. Andy Coggan to write the foundational book "Training & Racing with a Power meter" has revolutionized how cyclists and triathletes approach their training (and racing)....Yet there are still a few areas that have either misconceptions about, or straight up are being done incorrectly thanks to "common knowledge" (aka heresy!)
In this episode we cover:
What myths Hunter wishes would just DIE, when it comes to training with power
- How unlike Formula 1 racing, where there is a "trickle down" effect of the technology, in cycling it's a "trickle up and out" effect from coaches and amateur racers
- How power based training can allow you to ride WITHOUT staring at the numbers the entire ride
- Why the center of your training should be FUN, with numbers giving guidance to some of the ride, so you can get what you need training wise
- Why you DON'T HAVE to hit the exact numbers on every ride
- Why if you're using power, you NEED a bike fit from a great bike fitter, to really help you harness & use those numbers
- The skills that EVERY cyclist must learn in order to improve. . . with or without power
-Why preventing poor habit from the beginning is integral to success
and more!

Ep 81-Miguel Aragoncillo: Improve Performance and Movement By Going Deeper
Ep 81-Miguel Aragoncillo: Improve Performance and Movement By Going Deeper
Miguel Aragoncillo is a movement and performance specialist, with a deep wealth of knowledge. We sat down to talk about some of the deep rabbit holes in performance vs. regular "strength training". We spoke about his seeking to learn more about the off-the-beaten-path books and resources during one of his internships, and how his curiosity has helped him grow massively as a professional.
From taking an internship with no guarantee of employment after, to learning to take asymmetrical risks, Miguel has been pushing the boundaries as a movement professional by going DEEPER, instead of wider.
We also discussed:
-Evolution and it's role in movement for an individual
-Right Side/Left Side of brain and their roles in movement
-How simples, daily tasks effect how performance programs may be built
-Why Progressive Overload is not just adding weight or reps to the bar/movement
-How learning to move better, aids performance
-Why using something OPPOSITE of what you do in your sport/ competition should be one of the main focuses of the strength training program
-The context of sensory awareness
And much, much more!

If you haven't yet heard of Dan John, you're in for a big treat!
Dan has been coaching for over 4 decades, and has been an athlete his entire life. From Track and Field to Olympic weightlifting, Dan has played and coached for many years. With over 10 books authored over the last 20 years, Dan has shared his wisdom, insights, and failures with coaches and athletes around the world. He's been coaching others online since 1998, before most people knew what Adobe Acrobat is.
This episode I got to sit down with Dan, and talk shop with him. To say there are a few gems in here of wisdom is an understatement. Get your notebook ready, and enjoy the conversation, as while we cover some "serious" training topics, we have quite a few laughs on the way.
-Everything needs to be finished, BEFORE you complete it
-Why coaches can and should say "I don't know"
-Why & How training should change as you move through more decades on this earth
-When are you "good enough to be frustrated"?

Ep 77 Harvey Newton- Strength Training for Cyclists
Harvey Newton is one of the original coaches to help cyclists use strength training to get fitter, faster, and stronger on their bikes. I had the honor of sitting down and talking with Harvey on his thoughts on strength training for cyclists (and triathletes), and his thoughts on a number of topics:
-Harvey's work sharing strength training for cyclists
-The importance of NOT doing a million "functional" exercises
-Should cyclists be performing Olympic lifts (in their entirety)
-What's the difference between Strength Training vs. Resistance Training
-Developing Strength for your SPORT, not the weight room/Squat Rack
-The Evolution of the modern-day ultra-light professional cyclists
-High performance training vs. Recreational rider training
And much more.
Harvey is a wealth of knowledge and experience, and is no sharing that through his new project with SportsEd TV.
We had a few chuckles, shared a few moments of "that still happens/ is happening!" as well as learned a bit from each other. It's a great episode with lots of interesting take homes for coaches and athletes alike.

Ep 76- Strength Training for Running Part 1
Ep 76- Strength Training for Running Part 1
As I perused the interwebs this past week, I found a question in one of the groups I really like asking about "barbell strength training + running training". This is a question that many cyclists and triathletes ask themselves as well, with many simply following the newly minted mantra of "life heavy $hit". While this mantra comes from a place of really good intentions, it missed 95% of what you REALLY need to be doing to see in-sport gains from your strength training.
This week is part one of a two part series answering diving into the details of how to answer the question of:

In this weeks podcast we talk about 4 steps to take that can help you have better injury outcomes,.
This is NOT medical advice and you should ALWAYS follow your doctors advice. What today is, is information to help you have a far better, more effective conversation with your doctor and sports medicine team to help you figure out the best path for you, and to understand that in many cases you do in fact have options, and may have the ability find the best one for you: if you know the thought processes and steps to take to help be your own best advocate.
Always consult your doctor about medical decisions, and follow doctors orders. If you have a medical emergency, or require medical help, seek out an Emergency Room, or other appropriate medical facility immediately.

Ep 70- Tim Farin Part Two: 2020 and the season that was
This week Tim and I sat down to recap the 2020 season, talk about its effects on 2021 and beyond, and also discussed Jonas Deichmann's bike ride from Norway to Cape Town, South Africa, which he wrote about in their new book Cape to Cape.
In this episode Tim and I discussed:
-Will the UCI or Pro Teams have their riders live and train in Capsules like the NBA did?
-Should race radio be removed from the races?
-What does 2021 look like after a tumultuous 2020?
-Who will come out and race strong in 2021?
-Will Froome take another Grande Tour Podium in 2021?
and more!

Ep 69- Tim Farin The Giro, The Tour, & More!
Tim Farin and I met in 2018 when he came to Tel Aviv ahead of the 2018 Giro d'Italia to learn more about the cycling culture and scene here in Israel. Tim and I sat down to discuss the 2020 ProTour season, how Corona has affected the races, and to guess who would win the Tour de France, and how the Giro and Vuelta would go. We recorded this episode back on September 16, 2020, before the end of the Tour, so we didn't know what was coming! Tim is an accomplished writer, and recently published a fantastic book "Cape to Cape" documenting Jonas Deichmann's ride from Norway to South Africa. Which can be found in German.

Ep 68- Kettlebell Swings for Cyclists, and How to Train For Power
Ep 68- Kettlebell Swings for Cyclists, and How to Train For Power
Ah the kettlebell swing! Since CrossFit has come along, nearly everyone is now familiar with the Kettlebell swing. While this could be a good thing, it's also led to many folks grabbing the "RX" kettlebells of 16kg for the ladies, and 24kg for the guys thinking "its Rx, so it must be the right one!" We dive into why that thought process is keeping you from getting the results you want and deserve, as well as why lifting heavy sh!t to "develop power" should be at least a few weeks away for those who have not been doing heavy strength training consistently the last 12+ months. All this, and more, on this weeks SSCT podcast!

Ep 67 Rebecca Rusch- Be Good: It's who you discover you are along the way
Rebecca Rusch has been a pioneer in the gravel riding world, having established one of, if not THE premier gravel event, Rebecca's Private Idaho, which here in 2020 actually took place digitally. Bringing us along for her journey over the last 15 years, Rebecca has managed to take 7 World Championships, write a Best-Selling book, win an Emmy for her film "Blood Road", win Leadville 100 four times, ride a mountain bike like a boss so as to be inducted into the mountain bike hall of fame, and so much more.
We sat down with Rebecca to talk about her journeys around the world, how she got into endurance sports, and why she has a Ukulele hanging on her living room wall. This is a fantastic interview as we go a bit deep into her "Be Good" trademark, and how she handles adversity- like getting lost 30 minutes into a 7 day navigational race..... in Alaska.... in the winter....
Rebecca holds nothing back, as we dive a bit into what makes her tick, and how you can build your own grit and resiliency. #JoinTheRusch
U.S. Olympic Cyclist Amber Neben joins us as well to talk about BaseCamp, which she & Rebecca will be a part of the world-class coaches on duty this winter, along with previous SSCT guest Tim Cusick, and yours truly.
This is a fantastic episode, which I hope you enjoy listening to, as much as I had recording it!

Ep 66- 360 Degree Mindfulness: Connecting your Emotions and Body for better results
It seems now days that "Mindfulness" is a hot topic that has many endurance athletes flocking to meditation apps and forrest fields to "be more mindful". But is sitting and meditating to "clear one's mind fo all thoughts" REALLY all there is to being more mindful?
No. Not even close.
While opening up one's acceptance to meditation is certainly a huge step in the right direction, it's only a piece of the puzzle.
In this weeks episode we talk about connecting to your emotions, and your body, to help you and your athletes get TRULY mindful and to reap the full benefits it has to offer.

Ep 60- Cyclists & Triathletes How Much Technology Should You Use?
Starting in the mid 90's cyclists and triathletes have turned more and more to technology to help the ride, train, and race better....but is there an upper limit in what technology can do for us?
Does Technology dull or replace our ability to tune into what our bodies are trying to tell us?
Or does it allow us to get even more out of ourselves?
What should a beginner cyclist or triathlete invest in as far as technology?
All that, and more, in today's episode!

Ep 59- Cycle Faster- Sebastian Weber of INSCYD on the LEOMO and HOW you ride MATTERS!
You've heard me and other guests say it: Riding a bike is a SKILL that needs to be developed, trained, and honed.
But HOW do you train to ride your bike better?
Sebastian Weber and I sat down to talk about the LEOMO Type-S and how it can help cyclists and triathletes, especially beginners, to get fitter faster. No need to spend thousands of dollars on a top end bike, or super fast wheel set... you just need to learn how to ride your bike better, more economically, and for longer periods.
Posture, Breathing, and practice. It's simple, but it isn't easy.

Ep 56- General Physical Preparation vs. Strength Training for Performance for Cyclists & Triathletes
Ep 56- General Physical Preparation vs. Strength Training for Performance for Cyclists & Triathletes
In this episode we talk about the major differences between General Physical Preparation and Strength Training for Performance. While some believe that if you're doing a sport you should "automatically be doing strength specific for that sport" in fact, those who do this lose a lot of EASY gains, as well as balance, that they can get out of first going through a general physical preparation program for 12-18 months.
On the other side, the vast majority of those strength training "for cyclists" or "for triathletes" programs out there are in fact just general physical preparation programs....usually with too much emphasis on "sport specific movements" (see "your sport you do very much the same movement, so it has to be good).
Learn the big differences, and why both GPP and Strength for performance each are necessary parts of your journey, at the right time.
We also talk a little about my first book, why it's written the way it is, and how you can get the most out of it.

Ep 52- Dr. Lisa Lewis: The Corona shut down of 2020 cycling and triathlon season & how to keep focus
As the extent of Corona has grown, there has been a lot of uncertainty in the triathlon and cycling world as to races and events. This has led to many giving up on their structured training programs, and even abandoning training all together.... But punishing yourself and losing your fitness can lead to a downward trend: you're not getting regular exercise during a time of stress, which leads to unhealthy behaviors such as binge watching Netflix, or pore eating and sleeping habits. This week Dr. Lisa Lewis joins me as we talk about how to keep yourself and your athletes building to be EVEN BETTER.

Today's episode is a short answer (believe it or not) to a SSCT listener and former HVT Athlete question: "If I can carve out and extra 10 mins per day, what would you recommend adding into my daily routine to help me? I am doing my on the bike stuff 5 days a week, plus strength stuff 2-3 days a week. Deadlifts, planking rows, and some body weight stuff (pull ups, push ups, side planks). Any suggestions? Breathing, stretching, any other strength exercises?"
TRIATHLETES! I'd like to hear about YOUR Strength Training!
If you could take a few minutes to fill out this quick questionnaire, it would be a HUGE help to getting you some more dialed in episodes:

Ep- 50 Dr. Stephen Cheung- Don't Count Out The Brain in Performance & Recovery
Dr. Stephen Cheung has been studying environmental exercise physiology for quite some time, and in fact, literally wrote the book on the topic. This week we sat down to talk environmental impact on performance, as well as his experience going through a recent rock climbing injury which kept him off the bike for a few months. We talk about how his "fun hobby" of rock climbing has helped build, sharpen, and improve his ability to focus and get into a state of "flow" and how that's affected his riding.
Stephen also shares a deep insight on how he gets MORE out of his riding, by doing one simple thing, which allows him to enjoy his riding MUCH MORE, and reignite his passion for cycling!
Dr. Cheung is the Chief Sport Scientist for Baron Biosystems and the Xert data analysis system, and is a author of Cutting Edge Cycling, Cycling Science, and Advanced Environmental Exercise Physiology, and is the science and training editor, and contributor for PezCycling News (web site). He has authored more than 100 articles that cover respiratory training, altitude training, precooling and fatigue in the heat, hydration, optimal cadence, pacing strategies, jet lag, supplements, hypoxic stress, and the reliability of exercise testing protocols.
Cheung holds a Canada research chair in environmental ergonomics at Brock University, where his research focuses on the effects of thermal stress on human physiology and performance. He is also the author of Advanced Environmental Exercise Physiology (Human Kinetics, 2009). Cheung helped to establish the sport science support network for the Canadian Sport Centre in Atlantic Canada and has consulted with the Canadian national rowing and snowboard teams on specific sport performance projects. Cheung has also served as a cycling official and as a board member of the Canadian Cycling Association.

Ep 49- Strength Training for Cycling & Triathlon Performance: Be a Contrarian
Ep 49- Strength Training for Cycling & Triathlon Performance: Be a Contrarian
Today, many cycling and triathlon coaches are writing "strength training programs" for their athletes. While there are good intensions behind this, we're going to briefly cover why they should NOT be doing this, why attaining a certification is only the start of your journey as a coach, and how you can learn a lot from the current stock market (6/2020) as to how trends and "what's hot" right now can lead you or your athlete to pain and suffering, NOT performance.
Today's episode, we talk about why these mistakes are made instead of being corrected, and how YOU can completely transform your abilities as an athlete and coach, by swimming against the current.

Ep 47- What is true "Core training" for cyclists & triathletes, and how to do it
As the riding season waxes, many cyclists & triathletes (and their coaches) either cut out their strength training completely- less some "core".....but what IS true core training?
This week we get into why many make the mistake of focusing on the abs, and how you can get far more out of your core training than just super long planking abilities.
We cover:
- 6 exercises to get started with TRUE core strength
- Why they're each important.
- 2 quick and easy at-home tests you can do
- A simple (but not easy) change you can make for some of your movements to help them have a greater training value

Ep 45 Stacey McMickens- Building Deeper Connections to Build Your Studio
Starting a business can be really daunting. Starting a fitness studio can be petrifying, with keeping it going proving to be incredibly hard. But while many fitness businesses may try to compete on price, with the goal to get so many "visits" a month to balance their balance sheets, there are some out there who are doing it differently.
Stacey McMickens is a Triathlon coach, Cycling coach, and Fitness professional who has been a fitness professional since 1993. Stacy runs S3 Training in Alexandria, LA, out of her fitness studio FIXX Cycling. Since day 1 she has made a purposeful decision to keep her class sizes small, and to build deeper, more meaningful relationships. On todays episode we talk how she's built her studio to help a wide array of folks get fitter, as well as to compete at the national level. We'll also talk about how she has taken the opportunity CORONA presented to continue to build and strengthen those relationships.

Ep 44- Should you Assign TSS for Strength Sessions? AND Process Oriented Fitness
Ep 44- Should you Assign TSS for Strength Sessions? AND Process Oriented Fitness
This week we dive into 2 topics that are inter-related, yet one is not talked about enough...in my opinion.
Process oriented fitness goals, and goals in general, are one of the secrets to becoming a top performer in any field. So why is it that we are so focused on EVENT goals: Lose 5 pounds, Gain 20 watts, shave 2 minutes off your 40k TT....yes, we have to measure our progress, but what it learning how to be better than the last workout and focusing on that, will help you get better results?
TSS and strength training has been a topic that has been brought up a number of times over the last few months. While we do need to think about Training Stress, WHAT you're doing in your strength training will have a big impact on if/when/how we would use TSS.
Lastly, For the next 24 hours the Strength Training for Cyclists Certification is open. This is a super short opening, to allow those coaches and athletes who are looking to get more out of their time at home, and their strength training. After today the course will close until Fall 2020.

Ep 42- Recovery Focus
Ep 42- Recovery Focus
Recovery. This word is thrown around like a beach ball at a Phish concert, but very few seem to fully grasp how to do it best. Compression stalkings, high-tech compression boots, ice baths, and loads of antioxidant rich foods seem to lead the charge in the world of recovery for endurance athletes. On the training side, recovery seems to always mean dropping out all intensity, dialing back the days per week you train, and even just taking a week off.....but all of the above miss the bullseye, and in fact, are only on the outer rings of the target. Today's podcast dives into the inside out nature of true recovery, why some intensity is vital, and why those hot tips for recovery may actually be stunting your fitness growth...... So fill the tub with some hot water and your favourite essentaily oil bubble bath, and get read for a BBWR (Bubble Bath Wine repeat) recovery length episode!

Ep 37- Knowing Yourself Well Enough, To Know When to Cut Non-Essentials
In todays short episode, we talk burnout, and late winter mental staleness, and how it can completely drain all of the progress you've made to this point over the winter.
Every year, in mid-to late January, they being... the emails, messages, and phone calls from athletes who live in the different parts of the world where winter is cold, and unforgiving. Yeah, they've managed to build up some fantastic strength and fitness over the last 4 months, but it doesn't exempt us from being affected by the winter blues.
This week we take a short look at how why it's important to quickly recognize this stage of winter when it begins (EARLY) for cyclists and triathletes, and the 2 steps you can take to help you finish the winter strong, and mentally fresh.....HINT: it's NOT what you think!
I also share my my current status (HINT: It's burned quite a bit), and how I'm feeling after producing massive amounts of focused content the last 6 months (Certification Course+ launch, Foundations of Strength Training for Cycling Performance Course, 12 week Home Strength Training for Cycling Performance Program, and my first book, The Vortex Method).
