Can Structured Training and Intuitive Eating Can Coexist
Intuitive Eating is about listening to your body and eating in a way that provides nourishment, feels good, and brings you enjoyment. The focus is not on changing the size or appearance of your body. In fact, the first principle “reject the diet mentality” places a strong emphasis on putting weight loss and size and shape goals at least on the back burner if not tossing them out permanently.
This principle applies to movement as well.
But what if we like to train hard, push ourselves, leave it all on the gym floor, or have sport-specific performance goals? What if we like to see measurable improvement in our strength? What if we enjoy running and like to see our 10K time improve as a result of our training?
In the episode, I address an important and common question. Is a structured, disciplined, and maybe even for some somewhat of a “hardcore” approach to training at odds with Intuitive Eating?

Beyond Nutrition With Rebecca Heald
In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking with my friend and fellow nutritionist, Rebecca Heald about her transition from focusing specifically on helping people resolve issues around their relationship with food to her work now coaching business leaders. She is championing and implementing fearless workplace well-being, one bold step at a time.
We spoke about how this was a natural transition because as humans, it's difficult to compartmentalize different aspects of our lives. Our relationship with food ties into how we operate in every area of our lives including business, family, friendships, and more. And, of course, those other areas have a profound impact on our relationship with food as well.

You Can Lead a Horse to Water ...
“The first step is admitting you have a problem.”
Someone asked a great question about getting a spouse or other loved one to help support you on your non-diet journey when that person not only views health through a weight-centric lens but their particular views and behaviors also point to potential mental health issues.
I have a few quick thoughts on this that I’d like to share in this episode so give me less than 10 minutes of your time for this one.

She helps people seamlessly integrate and embody the concepts of intuitive eating, brain science, emotional mastery, and gentle nutrition.
Beth shared a bit of her immense insight into the area of nervous system work and how this plays an important role in developing the skills and principles of Intuitive Eating.
This is not an area where I personally have a lot of experience so I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation as I learned so much from Beth during our time together. I know you will as well!

Fostering a Healthy Relationship With Food and Body With Oona Hanson
In this episode, we're talking about our role in supporting a healthy relationship with food and body in our children and to do that, I brought on Oona Hanson, a true expert in this area.
Oona Hanson helps parents and guardians raise kids who have a healthy relationship with food and their body. In addition to her private practice as a parent coach, Oona also works as a Family Mentor at Equip, an eating disorder treatment program. Oona holds a Master's Degree in Educational Psychology and a Master's Degree in English. Her work has been featured widely, including on CNN, USA Today, Good Morning America, US News & World Report, Today, and People.

Cannabis Use and Intuitive Eating With Leah Kern, RD
Cannabis or marijuana use is nothing new in our country but more and more states have begun legalizing its sale and use not just for medicinal purposes, but also, for recreational use. As a result, it’s much more common for people to be more open about the fact that they are regular users of cannabis.
In this episode, I have a great and informative conversation with a registered dietitian Leah Kern who is a cannabis user herself and also works with a number of clients who use cannabis regularly. As a non-diet, Intuitive Eating dietitian, she shares some excellent insight and advice about how to navigate eating while high since cannabis can have a significant impact on appetite, cravings, and the enjoyment of food.

So, You Want to “Bulk Up?”
An extremely common question that comes up in my work with men and young people (women too, for that matter) relates to “bulking up” or increasing muscle mass. The fancy scientific term is muscle hypertrophy.
Maybe you have decided that you want or need to bulk up or have an adolescent child who has expressed an interest in this goal. If you/they search for recommendations on Google, you’ll inevitably encounter advice that firmly grounds you in diet culture. It’s typically a combination of structured training and rigid or at least quite specific dietary advice.
Is this healthy, not just physically but emotionally and psychologically as well? These are important questions and addressing and thinking through them early on in the process can prevent so many of the issues that we see pop up over time including problems with body image and relationship with food.
In this episode, I address the topic of interest in intentionally trying to put on muscle mass/muscularity in the context of the principles of Intuitive Eating, weight-neutral health, and an environment that promotes a healthy body image.

When Is "Processed" Food Is The "Healthier" Option?
Just about every conversation involving health discussions these days seems to revolve around, or at least eventually touch on the topic of “processed” food.
- I’m trying to cut out processed food.
- I’m trying to eat less processed food.
- I’m trying to eat more “real” food.
- You should cut out … and on and on.
But, I would submit to you that not only is processed food not inherently “bad” but in many cases, it’s actually the HEALTHY option.
In this episode, I share some thoughts on this particular topic.

Trauma and Our Relationship With Food With Vanessa Preston
In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking with Vanessa Preston about trauma and its impact on various aspects of our lives including our relationship with food.
Vanessa is a Mental Health Social Worker, Psychotherapist, and Nutritionist in Australia (originally from Kentucky). She has provided assessment and therapy services for 14 years and specializes in treating posttraumatic stress disorder and complex trauma. Vanessa is the Body and Food Freedom Program creator and the host of the Body and Food Freedom Podcast where she supports women to make peace with food and their bodies. Vanessa’s group program focuses on self-compassion, shame resiliency, body image healing, and intuitive eating.
Some of the topics we discussed include:
- Vanessa provides a fantastic description of what trauma is and how it impacts us in a variety of ways including our relationship with food.
- How men are often less inclined to express hurts and emotional struggles and how this can impact our eating habits and behaviors even when the traumatic experience has nothing to do with food directly.
- How dieting negatively impacts those who are trying to work through their trauma.
- How non-diet approaches like Intuitive Eating address the needs of those who are recovering from trauma.

Different Strokes for Different Folks
It’s so easy to fall into a way of thinking where we see only one way to work through a challenging situation. This is especially true in diet culture. The carnivore diet says to eat nothing but animal-based products. Many macro and calorie counters (especially many influencers we see on SM) think tracking is the best way to address your food-related problems … stick to your calorie target … easy, right?
However, we even see this within non-diet approaches like IE. While most coaches and counselors are careful to avoid this, it’s easy to find ourselves gravitating toward our favorite go-to approach for addressing a particular eating or body image difficulty.

Next Level Body Checking Brought to You by Diet Culture
While scrolling IG, I saw an ad I’d never seen before. It was two people wearing full-body suits that looked like something out of a sci-fi movie and the tagline on the image said, “Precise measurements for real results!” I have to say that I would have LOVED this 10 years ago to compliment MyFitness Pal (for tracking macros), Happy Scale (for tracking DAILY body weight measurements), my training logs, my countless progress photos, and it would have basically replaced my electronic tape measure. One more data-generating piece of tech to help me obsess even more about every little change in my body shape and size.
In this episode, I talk about this piece of tech and how this and other ways that we engage in body-checking could be harmful.

3 Shifts Away From Diet Culture
The first principle of IE is to reject the diet mentality. But, what does this actually mean? Also, what are some practical ways that we can make a shift in our way of thinking about health and wellness where we move away from a focus on body size and shape to one that considers the whole person and all of the various facets of health?
In this episode, I discuss 3 shifts away from diet culture.

Raising Intuitive Eaters With Karleigh Jurek, RD
In this episode, I had a fantastic conversation with registered dietitian and child-feeding expert, Karleigh Jurek. Karleigh shares some excellent insight into helping our kids strengthen and develop their intuitive eating instincts.
- Avoiding guilt and shame around food
- A simple model that lays out the role of the parent and the role of the child in the feeding relationship
- Desserts and other sweets
- When should we be concerned about our child's weight when taking a weight-neutral approach?
- Introducing new and unfamiliar foods
- The connection between issues feeding our children and our own relationship with food
- The importance of men also being involved in the feeding of kids
I can't emphasize enough that the job of feeding children of any age is just as much for men as it is for women! Yes, I’m talking to you, dads. We have a powerful role to play and our involvement can have a profound impact on the kind of relationship with food that our kids ultimately develop.

Training Your Intuition
I recently made a comment on someone's IG post where I said, “If you feel like your intuition would tell you to eat cookies all day, IE is exactly what you need because it will help you train and strengthen your intuition in the context of feeding yourself.”
Train and strengthen your intuition? I thought intuition was more about following your gut, cravings, wants, and needs? How can you TRAIN intuition?
In this short episode, I share a few thoughts to get you thinking about this topic.

Getting Support From Your Spouse/Partner and Loved Ones
This special episode is the audio from my Intuitive Eating: Help Without Harming Webinar. This webinar is designed for spouses, partners, friends, and family of someone who is on an Intuitive Eating or other weight-neutral approach to health.
Since Intuitive Eating is a completely different approach to health than what we typically see and hear about from our friends, social media, celebrities, and medical professionals, my goal is to help your support system better understand this perspective so they can in turn better support you.

An Ice Cream Case Study
On Valentine’s Day, I had my gallbladder removed due to “tons of gallstones” as one Dr. described it. As a result, I’ve had to modify my eating to a degree to avoid certain GI issues.
This might sound a bit strange, but, rather than become frustrated or bummed about how this might affect my food choices and eating habits going forward, I’ve fully embraced it. I’m enjoying the process of learning how my body responds to food now. It’s a time where I’ve had to put my Intuitive Eating skills to good use, listening to my body and using neutral curiosity as I discover what foods and amounts of foods work well for me at a particular meal or snack.
This episode is an ice cream case study that I think you might find helpful as you navigate your own relationship with food.

What is a Good Serving/Portion Size?
So, you’re new to IE and have decided to put the work into ditching dieting, putting weight loss on the back burner, focusing on reconnecting with your body’s hunger and fullness cues, eating for satisfaction, working on unconditional permission to eat, and, in essence, focus more on how and why you eat rather than the nuances of what you eat.
Awesome! BUT … that can sometimes feel a bit abstract at times.
A common issue that comes up is, ok, I want to honor my hunger and feel my fullness without allowing a diet to tell me how much to eat. But, I have no idea how much I should eat. How much should I put on my plate? How much is enough? How much is too much? What about serving sizes on packages? Should I use that as a general guide even though I’m not counting calories anymore?
In this episode, I offer some thoughts in response to the common question, "What is a good serving/portion size?"

The Death of My Gallbladder
Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a day of romance and connecting with that special someone in your life. But, this year, for me, I had a date, not with my beautiful wife … but … instead … with a surgeon for an emergency procedure.
This episode is the story of the death and burial of my gallbladder. It served me well for 51 years but, alas, as they say, all good things must come to an end. And so, this was the case for my beloved gallbladder.

Weight Cycling (AKA Yo-Yo Dieting) and What the Research Has to Say
Did you know that weight cycling, also known as yo-yo dieting, is not just an annoying experience for those who’ve tried to lose weight through diet and exercise?
It’s actually associated with detrimental effects on our physical and mental health!
In this episode, I provide a brief overview of what the research says about these detrimental effects and how Intuitive Eating may be an option to help you get away from this perpetual cycle that so many of us seem to be all too familiar with.

Become Equipped to Thrive
This episode is a bit different from most. In this episode, I introduce a resource that I think many of you will find incredibly helpful. In February of 2023, I'll be releasing my brand new course, Equipped to Thrive. This self-paced video course consists of 12 lessons (plus the overview in this episode) to help provide a foundation for your understanding of the powerful, evidence-based eating framework called Intuitive Eating. The purpose of this course is to help you finally break free of the perpetual diet cycle and get off the diet rollercoaster for good.
The course is much more than the videos. You also get practical, helpful exercises and resources to help you put what you're learning into practice in your own life. In addition, at the same time as the rollout of the course, I'll be opening up my Equipped to Thrive Men's Community which is a group where men (sorry ladies) can come together and support, encourage, and learn from one another as you go through the course and beyond. The cool thing with this community is that it will be hosted on my own private platform so that if social media is not really your thing, there's no need to get on Facebook or some other platform.
If you'd like to watch the video version of this overview session, learn more about the course, and/or sign up to be notified when it's available check out:

Real Story of Real Change With Jake Chapman
In this episode, I had a guest who was a bit different from my typical guests. Usually, I interview other professionals as they share their expertise in various areas of working with clients/patients. However, this time I interviewed a gem of a human being named Jake Chapman. Jake is just a guy like many of you who has struggled with his relationship with food and body image. Like many of you (well us professionals too, really) he's working daily on healing and improving his relationship with food, undoing past damage done by dieting, and learning to see and embrace his body for what it truly is ... an incredible creation of God that's here on this planet for a purpose. That purpose is not to look a certain way or meet some standards dictated by society, but rather, to serve, help, and invest in others, his family, and his community.
Listen in as Jake shares his journey. I'm almost certain each of you wonderful listeners will relate to Jake in some/many ways, and I know you'll be incredibly blessed by and take a lot away from this conversation.

Intuitive Eating, Sports, and Judaism With Coach AD Aleman
In this first episode of 2023, I had the privilege of talking with coach AD Aleman about Intuitive Eating, his enjoyment of sports over the years, and his faith.
AD is a Jewish husband and father helping Jewish dads make eating and exercise easy and stress-free so they can get back to being their best.
He grew up wanting to be a professional baseball player. Even though getting bigger, faster, and stronger in college he didn’t make the team and professional ball seemed to stay a dream.
He started to train others. Then he wanted to help men make change last using Intuitive Eating and now he’s coaching and not looking back.

Holiday Reflections: Satisfaction
In this short episode, I share a few thoughts on satisfaction after the holiday weekend. I'd encourage you to have a quick listen and reflect a bit on your own experience with satisfaction this past holiday. Non-judgemental reflection and curiosity are two of the most powerful tools you have available as you work on your relationship with food.
As we head into a new year, my hope is that you will finally break free of the perpetual diet cycle, restrictive dieting, and the idea that you need to focus on intentional weight loss. Rather, consider starting off a new year with a new mentality! One that involves ...
1. Rejecting the diet mentality
2. Honoring your hunger
3. Making peace with food (unconditional permission to eat)
4. Challenge the food police
5. Discover the satisfaction factor
6. Feel your fullness
7. Cope with your emotions with kindness
8. Respect your body
9. Reframing "exercise" as "movement"
10. Gentle nutrition

Ian Bickle and Behavior Change Coaching
In this episode, I talked with my good friend and colleague, Ian Bickle. While Ian is a nutritionist and personal trainer, he refers to himself as a "behavior change coach." I love this description of how he serves his clients (myself as well) because it really speaks to so much of what we do (or should be doing) as coaches ... helping our clients identify behavior and mindset shifts that can be helpful in working through the various challenges we all have as human beings.
Here are a few points we covered:
- How is your coaching different from typical nutrition coaching and personal training?
- Ian is currently working on his Intuitive Eating certification so I ask, what was it about Intuitive Eating specifically that caught your attention and got you thinking, yeah, this is where I want to go with my coaching?
- Do you think IE is well-suited for a lot … most guys? Have you experienced any challenges or pushback in taking a different approach to this “behavior change coaching” approach over traditional nutrition/PT coaching?
- I know you’re a huge fan of coaching in general. Why do you think people can benefit so much from working with a coach whether that be 1-2-1 or even in a group setting?
Ian and I speak quite often about challenges we may be experiencing in our work (as well as kids, dogs, vacations, etc.). However, one of the things I love about the diverse network of coaches that I have in my life is that we all bring in something unique to the conversation. We have different perspectives, political and religious views, thoughts on how to address various coaching challenges, how to apply nutrition science, etc.
This episode will give you a glimpse into some of these types of conversations between us coaches.

Managing Diabetes Without Weight Loss With Danielle Bubliz, RDN
Can a person manage their pre-diabetes or diabetes (type 1 and 2) without focusing on weight loss or weight management? In other words, is Intuitive Eating appropriate for those with diabetes or pre-diabetes?
In short, the answer to that question is a resounding YES!
In this episode, I spoke with Danielle Bubliz, RDN about her professional and lived experience with diabetes management in the context of a weight-neutral approach to health ... Intuitive Eating.

2 Blokes Talk Intuitive Eating With Coach Jonny Landels
Jonny is a certified health coach based in the UK who’s sick of diets. He uses a blend of Intuitive Eating counseling, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral therapy to help his clients leave dieting behind and live life to the max.
Jonny and I met virtually during our nutrition qualification and actually in person when I traveled to England back in 2019. From day 1, I've always appreciated his approach to personalized coaching where the needs of each individual are the top priority.
Like myself, Jonny didn't start his coaching utilizing Intuitive Eating, but rather, like so many (me included), emphasizing fat loss and changes in body composition. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation about his shift in mindset when it comes to this topic.
Jonny also hosts his own podcast called, "The Next Step Espresso" where he shares bite-sized nuggets of nutrition wisdom on a DAILY basis ... yes, he puts out a new episode daily ... as well as longer episodes with a wide variety of guests.

Body Image With Dr. Charlotte Markey
Dr. Charlotte Markey, is a world-leading expert in body image research, having studied all things body image, eating behavior, and weight management for her entire adult life (about 25 years!). She is passionate about understanding what makes us feel good about our bodies and helping people to develop a healthy body image. Charlotte loves to share her body image wisdom with others and is an experienced book author, blogger, and professor at Rutgers University, Camden.
One of the things that I found fascinating and why I had to get her on the podcast, is that she has written a book specifically aimed at tween and teen boys in this area called, “Being You: The Body Image Book for Boys." She's also written the counterpart to this book, "The Body Image Book for Girls."
YES, boys and men struggle with our body image as well and it’s super-important that we are able and willing to talk about this often uncomfortable area.
In this episode, Charlotte shares her wealth of knowledge in this area. We discuss general body image issues and we even talk a bit about some of her research into how chronic pain can impact our body image. So, if you or someone you love struggles with chronic pain, this will be a great episode for you as well.
The research paper that we discussed during part of the episode is titled, "Body image experiences in the context of chronic pain: An examination of associations among perceptions of pain, body dissatisfaction, and positive body image" by Charlotte H.Markey, Jamie L.Dunaev, and Kristin J.August in 2019.

"Processed Food" In the Context of Intuitive Eating
The terms “processed” and “ultra-processed” are used in the health and wellness space to describe certain types of foods based on the processing that they’ve undergone. There are a number of problems with these terms when used to describe food, especially since most people associate “processed food” with being unhealthy, bad for you, toxic, junk, etc. At best these terms are vague and not particularly helpful but in many cases, referring to foods in this way negatively impacts our relationship with food.
In this episode, I touch on the topic of how to approach "processed" foods in the context of Intuitive Eating and our relationship with food.
If you enjoy diving into the primary research as I do, the paper that I reference in this episode (PMID: 31105044) can be found at the following link:

How Do We Measure Progress With Intuitive Eating?
How do we measure progress when it comes to our relationship with food, body image, and health pursuits in general? When we’re dieting, we have what we often see as objective measures like the scale, tape measurements, and clothing size. However, what about when we’re taking a weight-neutral approach like Intuitive Eating?
In this episode, I dive into this topic a bit and offer some thoughts as well as some examples of how we can recognize progress when working through the principles of Intuitive Eating.

How Often Should I Weigh Myself? Or, Should I?
In this episode, I share some thoughts on the extremely common question for people new to Intuitive Eating, "How often should I weigh myself?"
My goal for this episode is to encourage you to get curious about the scale and its impact on your mindset and emotions. I help you to understand just how the scale can negatively impact our relationship with food and our bodies when we allow it to dictate what and how much we eat and move and just how much it can disrupt the process of working on becoming an intuitive eater.

Biases In Fitness/Health Pursuits/Coaching For Larger People With Coach Joe Loye
In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking with health coach, Joe Loye, about the challenges and biases that people with larger bodies face when trying to pursue fitness and changes in health, especially when they are not intentionally trying to lose weight. Joe has lived experience as someone with a larger body and so he has some special insight to bring to this discussion that I am sure will resonate with so many other men out there who have struggled in this area. Make sure to follow him on social media and reach out to just say, "Hi" and that you enjoyed the episode.
Joe Loye is an Educator and Health Coach who helps plus-size people achieve a healthy lifestyle through an anti-diet approach that emphasizes body respect and food confidence. In our discussion, he explains "food confidence" which is a term I absolutely love!

Intuitive Eating For Athletes and Active Individuals With Jill Merkel, RD
In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jill Merkel, Registered Dietitian, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. Take a look at some of her work experience in the area of sports nutrition and you'll see precisely why I was excited to have her on the show:
- Team Sports Dietitian for the NFL Tennessee Titans for five seasons (2017-2021).
- Consultant Sports Dietitian for Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) working with NBA G-League players for three seasons (2018-2020).
- Sports Performance Dietitian for EXOS (performance training department) at Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine where she worked with athletes of all ages including youth, high school, collegiate, and professional (NFL, NHL, NBA, and WNBA) (2015-2016).
- Collegiate sports nutrition experiences at the University of Utah, University of Oregon, University of Louisville, and University of Virginia (2013-2015).
Here are some of the things we addressed during our discussion:
- What does it mean to be an "anti-diet, weight-inclusive dietitian" and how is that different than other dietitians who may not use that label?
- How and why pursued dietetics and what was it about sports nutrition that she found so appealing?
- She spoke about her time as the team dietitian for the Tennessee Titans and some of the expectations coaches had regarding player weights.
- How to incorporate nutrition principles specifically for performance in the context of the Intuitive Eating framework.
- Supplementation
- Is there a place for intentional weight loss/gain in the context of performance nutrition when taking a weight-neutral, non-diet approach?
- And more!
If you'd like to work with Jill, she provides support for men, women, and teens so definitely reach out!

Fast Food and Prioritizing the Big Things First
In this episode, I start off by sharing a bit of what's been happening in my personal life lately and how it inspired me to create an IG post as well as this podcast episode where I focus the conversation on prioritizing the big things first.
One of the things that I love about the Intuitive Eating framework is how it really teaches/encourages us to prioritize the most important things above everything else. The 10 principles of IE aren't rules to follow but principles to incorporate into the context of our day-to-day lives. So, I distill the principles of IE into 4 key points that I like to emphasize in my own life and with some of my clients.
I like to make things practical so I talk about how you can address the common, "I eat too much fast food" thought that many of us have in the context of IE and thinking in terms of applying 3 of these 4 points (one of the points is related to movement so I don't really include that in this example). I offer some thoughts on changing your mindset from "how can I cut back on fast food" to:
- "Why do I feel like I'm eating too much fast food?"

Processed Food and Mental Health
I was recently part of a panel discussion on the topic of processed food and mental health. In this episode, I share a few thoughts about this topic from the perspective of Intuitive Eating as well as some of what the research has to say on this topic.
I referenced a couple of different papers in this episode, so here are those links:

How to Move Away From Tracking Calories or Points
In this episode, I share some thoughts on moving away from meticulously tracking calories, macros, WW points, etc. As you'll hear me point out, you don't need to go cold turkey! Intuitive Eating is not a rigid framework or new set of rules but a process of exploration, curiosity, and growth. If you're interested in exploring Intuitive Eating but don't think you're ready to delete MyFitnessPal just yet, have you considered a stepwise approach? Listen in as I share several ideas for how you can get this process started.

Hospitals, Vending Machines, and Stress ... Oh My!
In this episode, I share some thoughts on chronic health issues, hospitals, vending machines, and stress in the context of Intuitive Eating. I literally recorded this episode immediately after returning home from visiting my wife who has been hospitalized for the past couple of weeks. During this short discussion, I compare and contrast how I navigated this type of life-disruption back when I was calorie/macro counting vs. now as an Intuitive Eater.

All-Inclusive Cruises/Resorts, Buffets, and Unlimited Pizza and Ice Cream
In this episode, I share some thoughts on my recent experience taking a cruise with my wife and some friends. The cruise included essentially unlimited access to food and alcohol from early morning until 3:00 am.
For some, this may sound like heaven. Honestly, going in, I was really looking forward to it because of the way that I have embraced Intuitive Eating and incorporated that into my life. I generally feel very free around food.
For others, especially those who are currently dieting it might sound absolutely horrifying or at least bring up some feelings of uneasiness and anxiety.
How can we navigate all-inclusive resorts, cruises, buffets, conferences, and even parties when there is going to be an unlimited supply of food? Listen in as I share 5 key things that helped me to navigate this environment without feeling anxious or overwhelmed so that I was able to completely focus on just enjoying the time with my wife and friends.

Jason Wood: When "Healthy Eating" Becomes Unhealthy (Orthorexia)
In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jason Wood who turned his battle with orthorexia into a mission to break the stigma around men's mental health and eating disorders by launching his blog Orthorexia Bites in 2021 and publishing his memoir, "Starving for Survival" earlier this year. Through numerous podcast appearances, speaking engagements, and his writing, Jason is starting an important conversation that encourages everyone - especially men - on how important it is to speak up and get the help they deserve.
From the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), "Although not formally recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, awareness about orthorexia is on the rise. The term ‘orthorexia’ was coined in 1998 and means an obsession with proper or ‘healthful’ eating. Although being aware of and concerned with the nutritional quality of the food you eat isn’t a problem in and of itself, people with orthorexia become so fixated on so-called ‘healthy eating’ that they actually damage their own well-being."
There is a lot of stigma, shame, and lack of understanding when it comes to eating disorders in general but men (and those who don't fit the stereotype) often find it very difficult to recognize an eating disorder and subsequently find help because so many think of eating disorders as affecting primarily thin, young, white, more affluent women. The reality is that eating disorders and disordered eating affect people across the socioeconomic, gender, ethnic, and size spectrum.

Vanessa Preston: Trauma and Its Impact on Our Relationship With Food
This was such a wonderful conversation that I know I'll return to again and again and will be sharing with my clients.

Amanda Fitt: Weight-Neutral Nutrition for Climbing and Other Athletic Performance
In this episode, I had a fantastic conversation with Amanda Fitt. Amanda is a nutrition coach for rock climbers and outdoor athletes who want to fuel their bodies and level up their performance, without dieting or restriction.
Rock climbing is a sport where the strength to weight ratio can impact performance. It's common for climbers to carefully control or drop weight for the purpose of improving performance or "send" (make it to the top of) that elusive project. However, is there another approach that may be better for improving performance, overall health, and long-term well-being?
The practical insights Amanda shares in this episode are not only applicable to climbers but to other athletic pursuits where we might initially think intentionally losing weight may be the answer to improving performance.

Dr. Greg Dodell, MD - Addressing Health and Patient Care from a Weight-Neutral Perspective
In this episode, I have a wonderful conversation with Dr. Greg Dodell, MD. Dr. Dodell is a board-certified endocrinologist. He received his medical degree from Albany Medical College. He completed his internal medicine and endocrinology Fellowship at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, affiliated with Columbia University. He is in private practice at Central Park Endocrinology, PC.
This is an important discussion where we talk about his non-judgmental, weight-neutral, weight-inclusive approach to patient care. In a field where prescribed weight loss is quite common (if not the norm) as a significant part of treating type 2 diabetes, PCOS, and other conditions, Dr. Dodell takes a refreshing approach that does not focus on weight loss as an outcome measure. In fact, he doesn't prescribe weight loss!
If you're someone who has been constantly told to lose weight when seeking medical care or if you hesitate to seek medical care because of the stigma and inevitable conversations around weight that you may have experienced in the past, this episode is for you!

How Small Steps Can Lead to Big Changes
In this episode, I give 4 different ideas for small steps to help you along your Intuitive Eating journey. Intuitive Eating is a significant change compared to the way our culture and society address health and nutrition so taking a stepwise approach means you can focus on small, less overwhelming changes.
Here's a quick summary of the ideas that I discuss in this episode:
- Go a whole day or week without getting on the scale.
- Go a whole day or week without looking at yourself in the mirror naked or partially clothed.
- Take off your fitness tracker or Apple Watch for a whole day or week.
- Go an entire day, weekend, or week without tracking food in MyFitnessPal or some other app.
The idea is to pick one that might be most helpful to you and where you are right now on your journey (not all at once). If you're currently working with a therapist, RD, or coach, I would highly recommend discussing it with them first so that you make sure it aligns with anything else you may be working on currently.

Katy Harvey and How Men Can Help Their Spouse/Partner on Their IE Journey
In this episode, I have a great conversation with Katy Harvey, a non-diet dietitian who specializes in Intuitive Eating and body acceptance. She is based in Kansas City, and through her online resources and programs, she teaches people from all around the world to listen to their bodies, trust themselves with food, and ditch diet culture. Katy is also the host of the Rebuilding Trust With Your Body podcast (which happens to be one of my favorites, personally).
We discussed an important topic about how men can help support their female spouses/partners on their Intuitive Eating journey if they are not themselves ready to move away from dieting and weight-centered fitness. We also talked about how fathers can support their kids and family overall around food and body image when mom is working on Intuitive Eating and how to prevent kids from having food/body image problems as they grow up.

Does Intentional Weight Loss Interfere With Intuitive Eating?
In this very short episode, I offer a few thoughts to consider if you are someone who likes the idea of developing the principles of the Intuitive Eating framework while still pursuing intentional weight loss. Does this pursuit of weight loss interfere with Intuitive Eating? Why is the principle of rejecting the diet mentality stressed so much in Intuitive Eating?
I encourage you to simply listen and then do some honest reflection.

Shift Workers and Intuitive Eating With Guest Roger Sutherland
In this episode, I interview my good friend and colleague, Roger Sutherland from A Healthy Shift. Roger is a veteran 24/7 shift worker of more than 37 years in front-line law enforcement in Melbourne, Australia. Now an MNU certified nutritionist Roger coaches shift working clients 1:1 in nutrition, health, and wellbeing to cope with the rigors of shift work. Roger still performs 24/7 shift work to this day so he gets it.
In this fantastic discussion, Roger expertly answers the following questions for us:
- What is the prevalence of shift workers in society today?
- Does shift work affect men and women differently?
- As a coach what do we really need to consider that is specific to shift working clients?
- Tell me about your pivot to using a weight-neutral approach and specifically Intuitive Eating for shift workers. What did your coaching look like before and what were some of the driving factors that changed your thinking?
- Tell me about values-driven coaching. How is this beneficial for shift workers?
- We don't endorse fasting, but why is an overnight fast important biologically, and how can shift workers navigate this in a way that doesn't cause restriction, deprivation, or neglect hunger cues?
If you have any questions or would like to work with Roger, you can find him on Instagram @a_healthy_shift. As always, if I can be of any assistance you can find me on IG @intuitive.eating.men or on the web at https://hopedrivesme.com.

How to Talk to Your Spouse/Partner About Your IE Journey
In this episode, I share 4 things to consider when talking with your spouse or partner about your Intuitive Eating journey. These tips should be helpful for you regardless of your gender.
