Memorial Day 2023

Memorial Day 2023

If you were asked to provide an answer on the spot, would you be able to explain the difference between Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, and Veteran’s, would you be able to? On Aug. 31, 1949, Defense Secretary Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the armed forces under one agency -- the Department of Defense.
Note: As enacted, S. 1160 is Public Law 89-487 (80 Stat. 250). The statement was released at San Antonio, Texas.

Mandy Hickson (née Wells) was born in Cheshire in 1973. She gained a BSc Joint Honours Degree in Geography and Sports Science from the University of Birmingham. Mandy has over twenty five years experience within aviation. She joined the Royal Air Force in 1994 and was only the second woman to fly the Tornado GR4 operationally; she operated in hostile environments, including patrolling the ‘No Fly’ zone over Iraq; completed three tours of duty and flew fifty missions over Iraq with No. II(AC) Squadron. Mandy is now in high demand as a keynote speaker across a range of business and education sectors, where she talks with humour and great passion to inspire those around her. She has been invited to share her insights with some of the most successful organisations across the world, where she describes the strategies and behaviours that can be adopted when the stakes are at their highest. Resiliency Shield: Breaking "Impossible" Goals into Achievable Goals

Resiliency Shield: Breaking "Impossible" Goals into Achievable Goals

'I had seen dozens of people die horrible deaths ... This time was different. This time it was a friend of mine dying in the dirt in front of me, and it was my job to save him.'

Dan Pronk is the author of three bestselling books, a regular keynote speaker, and the resident medic on the hit TV Show, SAS Australia. After failing dismally in his first career dream of being a professional triathlete, he studied medicine on an army scholarship. Upon qualifying as a doctor, he passed the SASR selection course and served five years in Special Operations, including four tours of Afghanistan with 100+ combat missions.

Learn more about Dan Pronk

During his years with Army Special Operations, Dan Pronk had the unique opportunity to treat dozens of gunshot wounds. In his memoir, Pronk describes the highs and lows of his military-medical career, with the real toll they took on his mental health and family life. He writes about the burden of saving - and failing to save - friends and comrades, the feelings of helplessness and despair that haunted me, and the journey back to a meaningful and fulfilling civilian life. This memoir is a tribute to the doctors, medics, and first responders working behind the scenes in conflict around the world.

The Mission Focused Mindset: Perseverance

The Mission Focused Mindset: Perseverance

We are only limited by the things we allow to limit us. The keys to success and productivity are already in your pocket. You just need someone to show you the lock and encourage you to open the door. Who would have thought that a woman who pioneered a path for women in the military - excelling at what she did as an Air Force A-10 (Warhog) Pilot could ever struggle with confidence or imposter syndrome?
LTC Tammy Barlette (USAF, LTC, Retired) is a mindset and performance expert who specializes in the art of perseverance. As a retired Lieutenant Colonel and fighter pilot, who has faced many challenges herself, she takes lessons learned from the high-performance cockpit and relates them to the challenges of life. She has flown multiple aircraft, including the T-37 Tweet, T-38 Talon, A-10 Warthog, MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper, accumulating more than 3000 total flying hours.

After an aircraft injury required cervical spine reconstruction, Tammy transitioned to the Arizona Air National Guard. She flew the MQ-1 Predator and the MQ-9 Reaper, accumulating over 1500 hours of combat support time in both Iraq and Afghanistan assisting and protecting troops on the ground, providing real-time reconnaissance and lethal support. During this time Tammy also graduated from the prestigious US Air Force Weapons School. Desiring to get back into a high-performance aircraft and having a passion to teach, Tammy then transitioned to the Air Force Reserves, instructing in the T-38 Talon for the last 6 years of her 20-year military career. Her focus was on balancing family life as a married mother of three with instructing in the fast-paced environment of the Air Force’s premier fighter trainer. She excelled at both, earning multiple awards, and spearheading new programs to mentor and grow professional aviators.

As an entrepreneur, wife and mother of three, she shares powerful heartfelt stories of strength and grit. Tammy Barlette talks about how, for her, quitting has never been an option and the importance of not comparing her "backstage" self to someone else standing in the spotlight as she has moved forward in whatever comes her way. Confidence is a topic that is close to her heart. The importance of confidence in one's success is often under valued and this was a lesson she learned after years of aviation experience. It doesn't have to take years to develop confidence. Persistence and dedication in the face of difficulties and obstacles are required for progress. Her stories of struggle and triumph taught her how to persevere against the odds. Resist collapsing under pressure.

Dr. Kate Hendricks-Thomas

Doctor Kate Hendricks-Thomas, U.S. Marine Corps Military Police Officer: In 2018, she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer believed to be connected to burn pit exposure in Iraq. In the years since, Kate Hendricks-Thomas tirelessly advocated for herself and other veterans trying to obtain health care and benefits for exposure-related illnesses. Doctor Kate Hendricks Thomas died Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at the age of 42. Female veterans share their stories of seeking to be seen in a culture where they don't quite fit and their struggles to find community and friendship. Some fought during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as the first women in combat in American history. How and where, for example, does a female combat Marine find her tribe once she leaves the service? Through the stories of these courageous yet entirely human women, readers learn about the experiences of a new and often forgotten generation of veterans; about the challenges surrounding family and career choices that millions of American women face; and ultimately, about sacrifice, resiliency, loss, and love. This book will inform readers with an interest in female veterans and women's health and mental health issues, as well as researchers, students, and professionals working in fields encompassing women's psychology, health, and social work. An Unlikely Story of Transcending Boxes and Labels

An Unlikely Story of Transcending Boxes and Labels

"Inspire until I expire." That's what you will hear him say on his Tic-Tok videos both in and out of the gym. Of course, it will be followed by "Let CENTCOM say 'AMEN!" Born Michael Barnes, Chaplain Col. Khallid Shabazz grew up in a devout Lutheran home in Alexandria, LA "I loved everything about the church," he says. "But there were no men." As a fatherless child without brothers or uncles, he ached for male role models. The only man who played a significant role in his young life was the family friend who molested him when he was 10. "That's when my story starts," he says. Filled with shame and self-loathing, Col. Shabazz nearly failed out of high school. He says he squeaked into Jarvis Christian University in Hawkins, TX. Still, I hadn't dealt with what happened to me," he recalls, and he spent his college years picking fights and drinking himself to sleep. He says it was only a matter of time before his reckless bullying led to that bullet in his back. #khaledshabaaz | #YouveGotMettle | #martschink | #muslim | #takingcareofsoldiers | #army #armychaplain | #Courage | #mindsetmatters | #servantleader | #blackcommunity I#HBCU| #blackmenoftiktok

When you delete your adjectives, who are you? Most people limit themselves to their labels. They embrace barriers based on the box that society puts them in. But your adjectives aren’t your destiny. Bernard Toney: "Tactical Medical Officer: The White House"

Meet US Army Major Bernard Toney, Jr. (Retired) whose last duty station was none other than the White House Medical Staff. and was further assigned as the healthcare provider to the President of the United States, the Vice President, and their spouses. I bet that was like HIPAA on steroids. "During his service in the White House Medical Unit, he conducted 84 domestic and five overseas missions in support of the President and Vice President. Consequently, he assessed hospital systems and witnessed the social determinants of health that lead to health disparities and inequalities in the United States and worldwide. However, his first global health engagement was during a medical civic action program with villagers in southern Afghanistan in 2005 while serving in U.S. Army Special Operations." Voting and Veterans Day

If you haven't already voted for your candidate of choice via absentee ballot or at the polls for early voting, please, GO VOTE! Let your voice be heard. The opportunity / right to vote was denied for women and other minorities for so long. This is an opportunity to impact the future of our government. If you choose not to vote, you are also choosing not to complain about who is in office.

9/11 SPECIAL: NYPD Officer John Mulet

9/11 SPECIAL: NYPD Officer John Mulet

The September 11 attacks were a series of airline hijackings and suicide attacks committed in 2001 by 19 terrorists associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda. It was the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil; nearly 3,000 people were killed. The attacks involved the hijacking of four planes, three of which were used to strike significant U.S. sites. American Airlines flight 11 and United Airlines flight 175 were flown into the World Trade Center’s north and south towers, respectively, and American Airlines flight 77hit the Pentagon. United Airlines flight 93 crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to overpower the hijackers. The plane was believed to be headed to the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

On 9/11/2001, as an NYPD Officer, John Mulet came into work as usual - "on a beautiful Tuesday morning' as he put it. But the rest of the day, and his life, for that matter have never been then same again. https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-mulet-a96061225/

On 9/11, 24-year-old Air National Guard rookie fighter pilot Heather "Lucky" Penney was sent on a suicide mission. Without any live weapons on board her aircraft, she and her flight lead, Lieutenant General Marc Sasseville, rushed into their F-16's on September 11, 2001, knowing that it might be their last mission.  Their mission? - to ram Flight 93 to protect Washington DC only to find that the passengers on Flight 93 have overcome the terrorists and crashed the airliner.

Kim DeFiori: Lessons from Thor

Kim DeFiori: Lessons from Thor

Kim DeFiori began her military career after graduating from West Point in 2008 as a Military Police (MP) Officer. She deployed shortly after to Afghanistan for a year, serving with military police and infantry companies. She was one of the first women to work alongside Afghan police day and night conducting raids with special operations units. She went on to serve as an aide-de-camp at the Pentagon.

However, Kim's story doesn't end there. She shares her personal story in this episode of her journey in dealing with the aftereffects of her deployment because, as she says, "The Army does a good job teaching you how to deploy but not how to come home." Part of the trauma occurred back home. Wearing a mask + drinking alcohol and neglecting treatment are not a good mix.

Kim DeFiori is a mental health advocate wants to reduce mental health stigma and hopes all who are suffering won't do so in silence and isolation but will have the courage to ask for help.

In honor of Memorial Day, I couldn’t think of a better guest to come on than Scott DeLuzio. On Drive On Podcast, Scott has this mission: "I talk about topics such as mental health, PTSD, relationships, leadership skills, and interview other veterans about their experiences and how they've dealt with them. (S2:E73) Homeless, MST, and the "Why?" Behind the Podcast

Tiffany Martschink, originally from Charleston, South Carolina, joined the military after a semester of college. Originally, she was going to join the military as a Bandsman (she plays 5 instruments!), but after she passed the required audition for Tuba, she would have to wait 6 months before being able to ship out to basic training and AIT. Instead, Tiffany joined the Army as a Religious Affairs Specialist (56M) and served on both active duty and in the Army reserves for a total of 24 years of service. During that time, she also served as an Army Recruiter (79R) and an AIT Instructor amongst other roles.
In this episode, Tiffany shares a piece of her story about a specific event she experienced while serving as an Instructor/ Course Writer in the Army Reserves at the end of her career. It was at a point, while serving when she was also homeless that she experienced an MST (Military Sexual Trauma). Listen to her share her story and how it influenced what she is doing now- providing a platform for military service members, veterans, and their family members to share their personal stories by hosting this podcast- The Mettle of Honor Podcast -and advocating for those veterans dealing with mental health issues, suicide intervention, and MST survivors.

The number 22 represents the number of veterans s take their own lives each day. The number has become a rallying cry for advocates trying to call attention to suicide among veterans.

⚠️ We hear a clip of a veteran talking about how they turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with his PTSD. If this is something is triggering for you, proceed with caution ⛔️

Next week I will be sharing my story about my battles with a number of mental health problems I’ve dealt with and still struggle with. I will also talk a little bit about how I got into podcasting… Something I never had any desire to do, listen to, nor do I like the sound of my invoice yet here I am!

Morality, Duty & Military Ethics: Case of LtCol Scheller

Morality, Duty & Military Ethics: Case of LtCol Scheller

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Scheller has been in the news quite a bit as of late. While on active duty as commanding officer of the Advanced Infantry Training Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, LtCol Stewart Scheller, in uniform, posted a video on social media in which he criticized senior military and civilian leaders for incompetence in their management of the military withdrawal from Afghanistan and demanded accountability for their failures. A social media post of his resulted in his relief from command and a court-martial. 2021 “The baby boomers’ turn is over,” said Marine Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Scheller in a video this past Friday. “I demand accountability, at all levels. If we don’t get it, I’m bringing it.” “The baby boomers’ turn is over,” said Marine Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Scheller in a video this past Friday. “I demand accountability, at all levels. If we don’t get it, I’m bringing it.” His post, which quickly went viral, was in response to the previous day’s suicide bombing at Kabul International Airport, which killed 13 U.S. service members and over 150 Afghans. In his nearly five-minute-long post, Scheller laments the Biden Administration’s handling of our withdrawal from Afghanistan and calls out senior military leaders, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley, Commandant of the Marine Corps General David Berger, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. “People are upset because their senior leaders let them down, and none of them are raising their hands and accepting accountability or saying, ‘We messed this up.’” But Scheller’s remarks go one step further than a simple demand for accountability. He goes onto quote Thomas Jefferson who said, “every generation needs a revolution.”
Scheller had posted a video to his Facebook page on Thursday stating: "People are upset because their senior leaders let them down and none of them are raising their hands and accepting accountability or saying, 'we messed this up.'" The Marine officer -- who served in both Afghanistan and Iraq -- said in the video he was "willing to throw it all away" to publicly "demand accountability" from military leadership. After the video was posted, Marine Corps spokesperson Maj. Jim Stenger said in a statement that Scheller had been relieved of command "due to a loss of trust and confidence in his ability to command."
"This is obviously an emotional time for a lot of Marines, and we encourage anyone struggling right now to seek counseling or talk to a fellow Marine. There is a forum in which Marine leaders can address their disagreements with the chain of command, but it's not social media," Stenger said. Scheller's video was posted the same day that 13 US service members and more than 170 others were killed in an attack outside Kabul's airport, according to the Pentagon and Afghanistan's Ministry of Public Health. "The 13 service members that we lost were heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our highest American ideals and while saving the lives of others," said President Joe Biden in a Saturday statement. "Their bravery and selflessness has enabled more than 117,000 people at risk to reach safety thus far. May God protect our troops and all those standing watch in these dangerous days." Scheller wrote in a Facebook post Friday after being relieved that "my chain of command is doing exactly what I would do... if I were in their shoes." "I will not be making any statements other than what's on my social platforms until I exit the Marine Corps. America has many issues... but it's my home," he wrote.

Should Old Acquaintance be forgot,
and never thought upon;
The flames of Love extinguished,
and fully past and gone:
Is thy sweet Heartnow grown so cold,
that loving Breast of thine;
That thou canst never once reflect
On old long syne.

On old long syne my Jo,

That thou canst never once reflect,

(S1:E61) Final Flight Final Fight: My grandmother, the WASP, and Arlington National Cemetery

Erin Miller is the proud granddaughter of Elaine Danforth Harmon, a member of the Women Air-force Service Pilots (WASP) during WWII. Her grandmother’s last request was to be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery (ANC). After she died in April 2015, this request was denied by the US Army which runs ANC. Erin led a grassroots, social media, and direct lobbying campaign to fight the decision. This campaign was a success. On May 20, 2016, President Obama signed H.R. 4336, the bill introduced in Congress by Representative Martha McSally (AZ-2) in January 2016, which then became a law to officially recognize the service of WASP as eligible for ANC. The funeral was held on September 7, 2016, at ANC. This was followed by a family memorial service at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial, where Erin, her mother Terry, her sister Tiffany, Air Force pilots Lt. Col. Caroline Jensen, and Maj. Heather Penney and Representative Martha McSally spoke to honor Elaine's life and service. Erin is a licensed attorney in Maryland. She has a J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law, a Master’s in International Studies from the University of Leeds (UK), and a B.A. in History from the University of California, San Diego. D.A. Michaels “Courageously Broken: Memoirs of a Navy Veteran“

D.A. Michaels “Courageously Broken: Memoirs of a Navy Veteran“

Everyone has a story to tell and scars that don't heal. A young, idealistic teen leaves a small town and abusive father behind to join the Navy in a refreshingly down-to-earth memoir of one woman's journey of self-discovery. She embraces life with passion and courage, from training and partying with Navy SEALs to skydiving and joining the police force, but when tragic events while serving her country lead to years of nightmares, depression, and PTSD, she must learn to navigate life through the heartache and tears until the laughter and love return. You can get the full story of this Law Enforcement Officer (retired) and Navy Veteran D.A. Michaels in her book, “Courageously Broken: Memoirs of a Navy Veteran."
D.A. Michaels of the Cocoa Beach, Florida is our guest on this week's episode of the Mettle of Honor. She talks about #ptsd, #veterans, #lawenforcement, #firstresponders, and #courageouslybroken
Courageously Broken is a memoir about overcoming the adversities that life often hands us. Take a journey through the life of D.A. Michaels who flees a small town and abusive father by joining the Navy only to find herself working side by side with Navy SEALs in the jungles of Panama.
When a series of tragedies strike, they leave us with scars that cut deep. If we don’t properly process these traumatic events and instead, compartmentalize them as we often do, one day, when we least expect it, they will catch up to us and bring us to our knees.
That is what happened to Donna Michaels. As a military veteran and law enforcement officer, she set out to make the world a better place. But after years of suppressing her own traumas and witnessing countless others, it took a toll and brought a vibrant exhilarating woman into a darkness she never knew existed.
All her life she had been credited with being resilient and strong. She struggled to understand why after years of life experience and all the coping mechanisms she had learned she couldn’t bounce back and move on.
Courageously Broken is about the adventure of life. The good, the bad, and the journey into hell and back. Readers have said they have laughed, cried, and been grateful to see the world through the eyes of a veteran and law enforcement officer.

Threats we help address: internet outages, ransomware, active shooters, insider threats, IP theft, digital vandalism, phishing emails, terror attacks, physical theft, natural disaster, and compliance requirements. The internet is just a new medium for criminals, terrorists, and hostile nation-states to conduct their nefarious business. The threat posed to the business world, and the world at large, is dire and growing like wildfire. If your business doesn't have a unified, documented & practiced security plan, then luck is part of your defense." Intellection - Maybe my biggest weakness, but I'm more adapt at grasping the conceptual big picture vs the ground-level nitty gritty details (that is where our supplier partners excel!) 4. Context - Knowing the "why" driving your business is essential when developing strategy to keep you going. Without context, we're just going from putting one fire out to the next. 5. Harmony - The world is full of conflict, both internal and external. I use this strength to ID the most harmful conflict areas and bring some resolution. (S1:E41) From GED to Graduate Degree: Turning A Mess into A Message

(S1:E41) From GED to Graduate Degree: Turning A Mess into A Message

We spend a lifetime acquiring knowledge and skills. When we're gone the things we learn go with us - unless we find a platform to share our experiences. My passion is to add value to others by sharing my experience through speaking, training and advising. - Joe Manns The tragic loss of his father, and the emotional gravity of the military funeral, inspired Kent West to join the Army. There he found purpose in his life, which was amplified by the 9/11 attacks. West struggles with being medically separated from military service as his Unit is deployed to Afghanistan. Encouraged by his "battle buddies", West finds the courage to seek treatment, and overcome, feelings of separation and PTSD. Realizing that not all fights happen on the battlefield, West has an opportunity to lead his good friend, Stevens, on his journey to healing. Supporting the Film Principle production for this feature film will begin in the summer of 2021 in Florida's Tampa Bay area. We are offering up to four sponsorship opportunities for the film, which include product placement, production credits, set tours during shooting, exclusive access to VIP screenings, and more. Specialist Joseph Manns (Joe Manns) US Army, OCT 1998 - Aug 2002 was inspired to create this film based on a need he recognized in the Military, Veteran, and Public Service communities - the need to normalize asking for help and to bring awareness to the general public that not all fights happen on the battlefield. Military training, not just combat, sometimes comes at a cost. That cost may be injuries, loss of friends during training accidents, real-world traumatic events that occur during training, and feelings of anxiety or depression from military separation. Manns says that he commonly recognized that his "battle buddies" don't see one another as combat veterans or non-combat veterans. In his experience, he often felt like his service was "dismissed" by non-veterans when he didn't have a war story to tell. Already struggling with separation disorder, and guilt of not deploying with his unit because of a medical discharge, he felt undeserving of treatment services offered by the VA. "I don't want to clog up the system for people who need it and deserve it more than me", he said. Manns' hope is that this film will be the vessel that will deliver the message to neutralize the stigma that anyone is undeserving of mental health services.

(S1:E39) Inspiring Military Leaders Through Transition and Beyond

(S1:E39) Inspiring Military Leaders Through Transition and Beyond

Meet Army Veteran Jason Roncoroni of Ponte Vedra, Florida. While on active duty, Jason served as a 15N- a UH60 Pilot. Not only was he a pilot and a battalion commander, but he also earned the Senior Aviator Badge, Combat Action Badge, Airborne Wings, Air Assault Badge, and Joint Staff Badge. Currently, Jason is Co-founder and Chief Operation Officer of “Zero Six Group” and Executive Coach at the COMMIT Foundation. It has been said that leaving the military and transitioning back to civilian life might just be the most difficult mission for any military leader to undertake. When military veterans return to civilian life, they’re often confronted with challenges that never occurred to them and that they were not prepared for. For many veterans, it can even feel like an identity crisis of sorts. This is not to mention the impact it has on their families, who also often find themselves starting over again, outside of the community of people who understand their unique set of experiences. Veteran and executive coach, Jason Roncoroni, and psychologist and nationally recognized expert, Dr. Shauna Springer, have come together to create a workbook to help veterans work their way through this pivotal time of transition. Beyond the Military serves as a comprehensive, interactive resource to address the deeper psychological, cultural, and relational aspects of reintegrating into civilian life. It does this through more than thirty exercises presented through the framework of the military decision-making process, so that veterans can confidently, comfortably, and successfully navigate this transition back into civilian life. With this guidance, veterans will be walked through the process of unleashing their full potential outside of the uniform.

Memorial day is a day set aside to remember not just those who served in the military (that’s what Veterans Day on November 11th represents), but those who gave their all for the sake of the freedom that we are able to enjoy as Americans. In this episode, I want to highlight a group of women who served during the World War II era. They are known as The WASP - Women Air Support Pilots. Not only discussing the history of wasp but highlighting three with members who are buried in my home state, South Carolina. #YouveGotMettle

During his numerous deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa he planned, led, and conducted hundreds of combat missions under some of the most austere and challenging conditions. As a Marine Infantry Officer in 2006 Scott had the privilege to command Echo Company, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines as part of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Special Operations Capable (SOC) while attached to 1-9 Infantry Battalion ("Manchu"), 1st Brigade Combat Team (1 BCT “Ready First”), United States Army (USA) as part of the Surge Strategy in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.
In his book, Huesing transports readers to the deadly streets of Iraq in this visceral, gripping portrayal of urban combat. Bound together by honor and surrounded by chaos, they battled on the frontlines of a war without rules against an elusive, ruthless enemy who wore no uniforms and showed little mercy. Page after page, Huesing brings the resilience and bravery of the Marines brilliantly to life and shows how the devastation and terror of combat that left indelible scars on these heroes’ bodies, psyches, and souls. Like earlier classics about men at war--Helmet for My Pillow, We Were Soldiers Once and Young, and Generation Kill—Echo in Ramadi is an unforgettable portrayal of war that will leave readers amazed and, at times, moved by the author’s masterful way of capturing the experiences and emotions of combat.

“The most difficult part of the transition for me was disengaging from ongoing activities and responsibilities at my last duty station and focusing on my transition to civilian life. There was more to do than I realized, with medical appointments, moving, required transition workshops, finding a job, and more. It wasn't that I felt like I was indispensable in my last position, but I had projects that I wanted to see through to completion before leaving. Also, the Army was still providing my livelihood, so I felt it incumbent on me to continue to contribute.” Dave Raymond (Former Army Colonel)

(S1:E28) Shelly Huhtanen on Autism in the Military Family

(S1:E28) Shelly Huhtanen on Autism in the Military Family

Shelly Huhtanen, an Army wife and mother balancing a military life with a special needs child, said she has to plan her entire day to set her family up for success. Mark, Shelly, Broden, and their older son Hayden moved to Fort Hood in 2009 and enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) – an Army-wide service that takes into consideration what reassignments and jobs are best for families who have special needs children. The program also helps families connect with community support and services. "Sometimes I think we let the big Army push us into jobs where our family might not have the best care, but you can shape that and influence it," Mark said. But even with that help, it's still a struggle. In a constantly changing military setting, Broden doesn't do well with transitions. Even the smallest change in a daily routine can throw him into a tailspin. "When I pick him up from therapy, if I take a left instead of a right he will scream until he realizes where we are going. It can turn into a two-hour tantrum," Shelly said. It controls every aspect of their lives; where they go, who they see, and what they do.
Shelly Huhtanen is the author of the book Giving Voice Silent. This book is compiled of intimate short stories that involve a military family raising a child with autism. Issues such as stress involved with deployments, transitions with PCS moves, and fighting for an appropriate education are discussed. To connect with Shelly Huhtanen, she can be found on LinkedIn at

(S1:E27) Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS)

In 1987, a young woman working in the West Wing of the Reagan White House was introduced to a dashing Army colonel. She was a 2nd lieutenant in the Air National Guard. He was a Vietnam combat veteran. They fell deeply in love. Within months they married. On November 12, 1992, Brigadier General Tom Carroll, 44, who was the assistant adjutant general of the Alaska Army Guard at the time, was making a routine flight to a facility in Juneau from Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage in an Army C-12F twin-engine Beechcraft along with seven others. The guard were preparing for an instrument-aided landing when the plane crashed on southern Chilkat Peninsula. They died shortly after the crash. This week’s guest is his surviving spouse, Bonnie Carroll- an American widow. "We had five wonderfully happy years together," Bonnie said. "Then he was gone. That August, I got together with some of the other families who lost loved ones that day. We chartered a helicopter and visited the crash site. It was on the side of a mountain, and the remains of the plane were still there. For us, being at the site provided finality, and was very much a healing experience." While that experience may have helped stanch some of the emotional bleeding, the ache of loss only grew deeper. Bonnie looked around for some group that might offer support. There was none. "No group was there for all those who lose a loved one serving in the Armed Forces to reach out to," she said. All that winter, Bonnie Carroll thought about that void, thought about creating an organization to fill that void, talked to folks who could empathize with her pain: others who had lost a husband or a wife, brother or sister, son or daughter; officials in the Pentagon and the VA. In October 1994, she launched the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors. Today she still serves as the President & Founder of TAPS- the leading national Military Service Organization providing compassionate care, casework assistance, and 24/7/365 emotional support for all those impacted by the death of a military loved one. She is a 2015 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Contact Information for Bonnie Carroll T.A.P.S. Social Media T.A.P.S. Trillitye Paullin, Ph.D. CEO & Founder at Free to Feed  | Doctoral Degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology  |  Combat Veteran (Operation Iraqi Freedom) Trillitye wrote, “Instead of a legacy, my family passed down generations of physical and sexual abuse.  I wanted more for my children than hospitals, foster homes, and courthouses.  I  dreamed of a  day when  I could provide unity, support, and stability for my family.  Throughout my adolescent years, I often thought about my future.  I decided the only way to achieve my dreams was to continue my education beyond high school and to surround myself with highly successful and motivated individuals. The means to accomplish this occurred during my last semester of high school when an Army National Guard recruiter visited my school.  At only seventeen, I enlisted in the National Guard, and I am proud to say that I am still serving today. At nineteen years old, I deployed to Iraq. I was faced with the harsh realization that the country to which I was deployed did not share the freedoms that I had experienced in my life.  Consequently, I witnessed true adversity as I was thrust into a world where poverty, hunger, and rampant disease were a part of everyday life. Being one of the few women in the country to serve in the military has proven to be an integral part of my identity.  I discovered that the abuse inflicted upon me as a child does not define the woman I am today. I have overcome my past and will continue to make a difference in the lives of others.  The military has given me the strength to shed the yoke of abuse and focus on the amazing career and philanthropic opportunities that await. “The Leader of Character” formula others want to follow is
Hard Work + Perseverance = Success
In Breaking Ice and Breaking Glass: Leading in Uncharted Waters, Vice Admiral Sandy Stosz, US Coast Guard (retired) draws upon her 40 years of extensive experience and wisdom as a woman directing mostly all-male teams in front-line leadership positions to provide tools that will help leaders, particularly those at the middle level, reach their goals and succeed. The purpose of the book is to provide tools that will help leaders navigate complexity to reach their goals and succeed at every level. Character-centered, proven leadership principles emerge from Admiral Stosz’s engaging, personal stories that teach leaders how to find, and then become, an inspiring mentor; implement effective diversity, inclusion, and equity programs; successfully lead in an ever-changing environment, and much more.
