Ep 72 - Postpartum Depression & Modern Mom Myths
Guest April Kelly discusses her motherhood journey including postpartum depression, restricted milk supply, medical gaslighting, doula birthing, and more.
More about April and her journey:
Just a few years ago, April Kelly and her family were celebrating one of the most joyous times of their lives, bringing home their new baby. Like most parents, she and her husband experienced the full range of emotions, happiness, excitement, a tinge of anxiety but most of all, the warm sensation of unyielding love. Shortly after returning home from the birth of their 3rd child, they were faced with a sudden change of events that ultimately led them to make the decision to supplement full-time. After battling postpartum depression, a restricted milk supply, and excruciating feedings, April decided to grasp onto the tidbit of sanity she had left, forgetting about the mommy guilt and diving headfirst into supplementing. "Like many moms, I felt ashamed, overwhelmed, and a bit guilty. What could I have done differently to avoid this outcome? I wasn't looking forward to the task of formula shopping or the potential of mom-shaming that sometimes comes along with formula feeding." After experiencing terrible side effects from a popular plant-based formula on the market, April and her husband decided to take matters into their own hands, committing to extensive research on formula ingredients and alternative options. Safe to say, a fire was lit that still burns today. "With the aid of pediatricians, industry experts, my husband, and all of my mom-friends, we've developed a special recipe that provides complete nutrition, quality, and convenience." As a woman, a mom of four, and a wife, April strives to create an inclusive family-friendly brand that empowers, educates, and equips parents to make the best decisions regarding the health and well-being of their children starting with their ready-made plant-based formula for infants, and toddlers

Ep 070 - Friendship Breakups
This is shit we DEFINITELY don't talk about: Friendship Breakups. This is a messy and taboo subject for many and guest Aimée La Fountain dives deep into the nuanced layers of kicking a friendship to the curb.
Pro-tip: This episode is an excellent follow-up and pairs nicely with Episodes 68 and 69
Aimée La Fountain is a Greater New York-based writer and marketing strategist. She currently serves as an arts columnist for Gannett and specializes in features. Her writing has appeared in YES!, SELF, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, among others.
I wrote a piece for Yes! Magazine offering advice for recovering from the end of a friendship, based on what I've learned from a few breakup experiences with long-term (10+ years) friends.I believe there's a hunger to address the issue because despite it being a common (in a 2016 Finnish study, 70% of participants had ended friendships) and painful (a 2010 study found that social rejection can be as distressing as physical pain) experience, society tends to give it little attention. The end of a friendship can be as devastating as the end of a romantic relationship, yet we don't have friendship divorces or other established norms for how to go about it. While we also have expressions like "it's not you, it's me" for romantic relationships, there isn't a similarly established dialogue for friendship breakups.Facebook

Ep 067 - Ayahuasca & other plant medicines
Today’s topic is ayahuasca & other healing plant medicine modalities and I have two guests! Humberto Alcala(who is a shaman by the way) and Ruger Hebert - they have an ayahuasca retreat center called Finca el Pendulo in Jalisco Mexico. Tune in as we discuss all the amazing benefits and we do a deep dive into the background of ayahuasca as well as the experience itself.
Humberto Alcala, is best described as a modern-day medicine man. Ten years ago, after several personal experiences with ayahuasca, the medicine led him away from his successful contracting business in California towards becoming a highly respected facilitator – and Shaman – of mental exploration and emotional healing through sacred medicines. The culmination of this path resulted in training with an experienced traditional Shipibo Shaman, while living amongst the indigenous tribes deep in the Peruvian jungle near Pucallpa Peru. Humberto’s background combined with traditional shamanic training provides an effective bridge between the western psychology alongside the native South American medicines.
Ruger Hebert is the creator and director of Mexisoul Retreats. His connection to plant medicine is a deeply personal one. In May of 2021, while living in Las Vegas, he crossed paths with Humberto in one of his ayahuasca ceremonies. For many years prior he struggled with depression and a general dissatisfaction with life. The experience was transformative, life-changing, and culminated in a journey where he created and now directs ayahuasca retreats at a center called Finca el Pendulo in Jalisco Mexico.
Their mission is to help our guests heal, find their purpose, and connect with their higher selves.

Well really, we're talking about how those messages quickly veer into toxic and harmful places when you don't acknowledge the mental health, social, and economic reality of a world outside your own experience.
So ... spoiler alert ... if you can't stand the idea of EVERYONE getting the abundance they desire, then your belief that the Universe has your back is a giant steaming pile of horse dung and you may want to re-think that position or at least be quiet about it.

EP 047 - Violent Femmes of History
In this episode of Shit We Don’t Talk about, Mia chats with Rahaleh Nassri host of the Violent Femme podcast. What’s the Violent Femme podcast? Glad you asked!
Violent Femme is a narrative podcast about women in history who were brave, bold, and ingenious, yet are mostly remembered for their brutality or villainy, if at all. Each episode will resurrect one of history’s brutally brave women whose image has been tarnished or even erased by men who fear such women but have long been entrusted with our history. Violent Femme will retell and sometimes reimagine history from the heroine’s perspective. This is herstory.Talking about what women need is awesome, but talking about that in the context of women always being victims is not healthy or productive. Rahaleh started Violent Femme to tell the stories of women that history largely ignores. These are women that embody the flawed hero archetype normally reserved for men. Through their action, these powerful women redeemed themselves and moved beyond their flaws. These are stories worth telling.

E 23 - Ethical Non-Monogamy | Sagan Morrow
On the 23rd episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, we welcome Sagan Morrow to discuss ethical non-monogamy and polyamory and break the mystery and myths wide open. She is a romantic comedy novelist and productivity strategist, hobbyist burlesque dancer, and she identifies as polyamorous.
The idea that there's only one person that we can be romantically in love with is outdated.
What ethical non monogamy does is step away from our traditional understanding of what romantic relationships need to be and flip it on its head. We can step outside of what society tells us we need to do, escaping the conformity of traditional relationship styles and the expected relationship structures within society and make our own rules about our relationships.
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast:
We really need to tune into what we want, rather than what we're told we should want. There are far too many people out there who are just not happy with their lives seemingly because they didn't actively make a choice of what they wanted to do and just did what they believed they were “supposed” to do.There are many variations of what ethical non-monogamy is, and each person gets to determine what that means and what those boundaries are for them. It's all about freedom. We get to define things ourselves, create our own labels, and we get to have nuance with them and that definition might evolve over time - and that's more than okay.
When exploring polyamory and ethical non-monogamy, start from a safer space, a place that doesn't feel like it's so far out of your comfort zone. Approaching it the way you would your friendships - you can have love for more than one friend - helps when you consider your romantic relationships.
Sagan started from her safe space, which is writing. Its how she wound up writing her polyamorous passion series that explores polyamory and ethical non monogamy through the lens of romantic comedy. Its given readers a chance to see a different type of love triangle, to see romance happening in all kinds of different ways. And it’s helped others start to ask what freedom looks like in their own relationships.
When asked what some of the questions people can ask themselves when exploring polyamory and ethical non-monogamy, Sagan says “really just sit down and think about what do I want from my life? All other things aside, if I could have everything I want, what would that look like? And really just looking at absolutely everything if I could have everything I possibly wanted? What would it be? Not looking at what's realistic at all, just thinking about what do I actually want?” That's a good place to start.
We think so too.
To stay up to date and get the behind-the-scenes scoop on Sagan’s writing journey, you can tune into the Indie Author Weekly podcast, or visit SaganMorrow.com to access productivity resources.

EP 022 - 3/5 Clause and Dismantling Racism | Candice Bailey
The one thing that’s been apparent the last four years and certainly in the last year is that shit has to start at home. It will take a grassroots effort to change the narrative that is dominated by the mainstream media and social networking sites. We can no longer avoid uncomfortable conversations and need to acknowledge that white supremacy exists on multiple levels, has existed since the founding of our country, can’t be denied, and it can’t be wished away.
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast:
The root of our issue is that within our country’s founding documents, anyone with melanin in their skin is considered three-fifths of a human being. So we should be talking about what does it mean to be three-fifths of a human and what that means to you as a white person or as a person of color.
America has done a great job throughout its history of putting band-aids on bullet wounds. When you put a bandaid on a bullet wound without removing the bullet, left alone it infects the whole body, and we need to stop asking why that wound doesn’t heal.
When we're talking about the three P's of white power, we’re talking about Plantation, Penitentiary, and Pharma. These three elements are the evolution of white supremacy, where the penitentiary becomes the plantation and Big Pharma is the slave master.
Candace’s advice to white people would be “Listen a lot to people of color, black people. Listen to what they're telling you. And don't be on the defensive. Just absorb some of it and take it home with you and unpack that with your family. And when someone says ‘I'm not racist’, challenge that and say, ‘How are you not racist? Help me to understand what do you do that works against racism every day? Or what do you do that makes you believe that you're not?’”
Asking these types of questions is just the type of grassroots, ground-level conversations that need to be had in order to disrupt the current narrative regarding race and injustice in America.

EP 021 - What Are You, Psychic? | Rick Finbow
In episode 21 of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Mia is joined by Rick Finbow. Rick is a Denver-based psychic medium, animal communicator, and magical life coach. Mia and Rick dive into the world of trusting your gut, psychic powers, finding the right psychic, tarot card, and more.
Takeaways - What Can A Reader Do For You?
A good reader can help you make sense of the world around you. Conceptualizing life events or even major societal shifts (global pandemic, anyone?) within the framework of a larger schema that can explain why and how things are happening can be very useful. A reader is not just here to predict the future. A reader can help you interpret both the past and the present in a productive way. Readers can help you see and understand patterns and cycles. Rick points out that so much of the upheaval we are currently experiencing in the world has been repeated again and again throughout the ages. Things that seem overwhelming and “unprecedented” have likely happened before. We can learn from those things. A good reader can help you see this. A reader can help you understand and navigate day-to-day situations and challenges. Especially today, the changes forced upon us by the pandemic, societal and political changes may mean that you have to show up differently in the world. Your reader can help you get a grip on these things. To find Rick Finbow online, visit psychicrick.com

EP 020 - Keep Your Mind On Your Money | Nicole Barham
On Episode 20 of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Mia is joined by finance systems coach Nicole Barham. There’s no better source than Nicole when it comes to solving financial problems by keeping your mind on your money, and your money on your mind!
Three takeaways from this episode:
Know that you are not alone in your money problems. Others are struggling too! Take control! Ignoring your problems won’t make them go away. At a minimum, open a spreadsheet and use it to track where your money is. Start today. It might be painful to see the reality of the situation, but it is necessary. Getting closer to your money in this way will help you solve your problems and avoid them in the future. Just five minutes a day paying attention to your finances is all it takes to get the ball rolling. You don’t have to become a financial wizard overnight!Learn more or contact Nicole at https://nicolebarham.com

EP 019 - Healing Trauma & Must Love Dogs | Erin Moore
On the 19th episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Erin Moore’s got the scoop on healing trauma, dogs, and business. We think that’s the perfect hat trick! Besides, it is high time that we start healing trauma and not retraumatizing ourselves, right? We’re all about the good vibes.
Trauma is in everyone’s wheelhouse, and childhood anxiety is not far behind for many people. Since this is the case, it is more critical than ever that we approach healing without shame. It’s tough to do, but that’s why we have Erin. And she has done something really cool, which is working with dogs to help heal her trauma. Unbeknownst to us, the dog training world is filled with women who have turned to animals to get and receive love because, to them, humans hurt.
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast.
One of the reasons people stay in abusive relationships is because they don’t have a home for their pet. Keep this in mind if you find yourself trying to help someone get to safety. Do you know the difference between the feelings brought on by your “gut” or “instinct?” Did you know there was a difference? Us either. Traumatized people look for an external means of healing rather than recognizing what is in their control. Not to sound corny, but healing comes from within. One of Erin’s fave sayings is, “Whether you’re drowning in a teaspoon or drowning in an ocean, you’re still drowning.” We want to be so careful not to minimize our pain by saying, “But this person had it worse.” Are you doing that? Erin advises on what to do to help yourself. Here’s a hint: put on your oxygen mask first. People dealing with trauma make pledges to care for others in the ways they weren’t cared for. Overdo this, and boom! Drowning.

EP 018 - Sex in the Time of COVID | Corbin Knight-Dixon
On the 18th episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, we’re bringing sexy back, or sex, as it is in 2020--where everything sucks, and the points don’t matter. Sex is Corbin Knight-Dixon’s gig. He’s a sexuality educator, consultant, learning coach, and advocate. Today, he’s got the tea on everything X-rated.
Corbin is a veteran uncomfortable convo wielder since the ripe ol’ age of 15 when he volunteered at Planned Parenthood, so he feels pretty at home on our set. It’s sex-simpatico, apparently.
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast.
If you’re grieving the loss of your old life in the midst of the pandemic, partnered sex and intimacy can actually be used as part of your healing modality. Winner, winner, chicken dinner for the best treatment evah!Corbin is in the business of shame-breaking. If you can relate, make sure you listen to the whole show!
Sadly, kids and teens aren’t getting the info they need on sex right now, and so they’re turning to TV shows and porn. They’re not learning what they need to with this isolation that’s making the classes they might take unavailable.
Skin hunger and sex are going hand in hand in this age. People are isolated, and times are smacking of HIV when you needed to trace who you were with. One option Corbin brought up was the fact that folks were testing the waters of telesex, sex over Zoom, or other video options, which still provide a release and a connection, but it’s completely safe. And if you like to fly solo, then this is also a great time to learn what you like and to take a moment to explore. How’s that for some homework? And BTW, get rid of any shame that you might feel.

EP 017 - How To Unfuck Yourself | Cheri Yazzie
On the 17th episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Cheri Yazzie is giving us permission to not give a fuck. As an energy healer with her cool-ass business, Fulfilled AF, she is teaching us all about boundaries today and learning how to be happy where you are.
Learning to love where she is and who she is wasn’t an automatic feeling for Cheri. She had to focus on how to heal her past and her energy and allow herself to have it all and enjoy it--despite the challenges we all have.
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast.
Do your public and private persona match? You can feel out of alignment if you’re living as two different people. You can unfuck yourself even if you think it’s too late.
No one is going to create and defend a boundary for you.
Establishing boundaries isn’t automatic, so if you’ve felt like you’re not very good at this, don’t worry so much! Get back on that boundary wagon and try again. It’s like trying anything new; you just need to keep at it until it sticks.
Remember, changing involves grieving. It’s very normal when you are changing a dynamic between two people that it will be hard to let go and accept that things are going to be different. Allow yourself the space to feel what you need to without judgment. And you know how you hold space for others? Try that on yourself. Especially this year. It’s mandatory for good survival.

EP 016 - Medical Gaslighting | Kelly Wilson
On the sweet 16th episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, we are welcoming Kelly Wilson, of fitfizzstudio.com and host of the FitFizz podcast; Kelly is a personal trainer, nutrition coach, behavior change specialist, and autoimmune educator who has been in the health and fitness industry for 25 years. So she is more than qualified to talk about today’s pressing issue: medical gaslighting.
Simply put, medical gaslighting happens when a doctor dismisses a patient’s concerns, questions, or symptoms. It even occurs when they downplay what you’ve got going on. We’re pretty sure everyone has been affected by this--particularly people who are chronically ill.
Gaslighting, in general, might be better referred to as “crazymaking.” People engage in this behavior to get what they want and not address the problem at hand. Also, they are assholes.

EP 015 - God, Guns, Greed and Racism | SharRon Jamison
Since women are typically seen as nurturers, who are very loving and compassionate, it’s difficult to grasp why so many voted for Trump. It’s at odds with what we would believe women want: no children in cages, non-assaults on our bodies, respect, to walk fearlessly in the world, and the list goes on. SharRon reminds us that Trump magnifies what is wrong in our world, that racism existed before he darkened the White House’s door, and so did a whole bunch of other injustices.
Today, more than ever, it is important that white women and black women talk to each other and be in connection because we cannot learn without being in the struggle right beside our sisters. It is not enough to slap a black square up on your Facebook profile and call that support.

EP 014 - Active Activism | Shenika Carter
On the 14th episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Shenika Carter drops some truth bombs about active activism and how we all need to stay engaged and involved--even though the annoying orange is vacating the Oval. That doesn’t mean the fight is over.
For as long as minorities have been around, they have been marginalized, and their civil liberties and human rights threatened. This year, Hispanic people were told that if Trump didn’t win, their rent rates would increase. But Shenika wasn’t shocked, as appalling as it is, and this is what we need to pay attention to: shit like this goes down and affects oppressed populations regularly.
That’s just one takeaway from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast. Here are three more.
Black voters who have been voting for decades have been thrown off the ballot and their registrations removed. This is voter suppression, and it even happened to Martin Luther King Jr.’s cousin!White slave owners who were forced to give up their slaves were given reparations. This is a new bit of information that gives even more credibility to their being an actual gap in generational wealth--as well, as it is incredulous when we know that black people have been asking for reparations for years.
Even though it’s 2020, people who have organized protests are facing 20 years in prison. And yeah, this is legal…in case you were wondering!
In this day and age, we have major race problems that, sometimes, white people can’t see. Legislation is racist. How terrorism is attacked is racist. White domestic terrorism is the issue, and rightfully so, Shenika asks, “Why don’t we have a task force for that?” It’s a question that needs answering and definite proof that more and deep work must be done. This would not be tolerated if the people affected were white.
You need to listen to this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast to accept that the reason we have so many race issues today is due to the continued unfair treatment of black people that dates back to how they were allowed to be treated in society. That’s also why you need to make sure you vote to change up the Senate and help to make a different kind of history.

EP 013 - Tomika Bryant - What's Next?
On the lucky 13th episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Mia dishes with Tomika Bryant of Life in Pumps. Tomika is an organic lifestyle blogger, activist, and Philly girl, so you know she has thoughts on the nonsense of this election, agreeing to disagree, drawing lines in the sand, and cancel culture.
As a black woman talking with a white woman and vice versa, this episode is real and goes to places most people don’t dare to go. A note as you read about it: Mia and the rest of the crew want you to remember if you’re lucky enough that your rights are not up for debate, consider voting for those whose rights are--those are the kind of places we’re going.
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast.
Cancel culture is a calling-it-out culture. When people don’t want to tolerate unacceptable behavior, it’s very needed! This is not the time for cafeteria religion. An example of this is being pro-life for white women only. (Didn’t know that was a disgusting thing, huh?)
Loving others is a noble and worthy goal, but it’s an empty platitude without action behind it. Besides, when that is a response to people asking for change, it is invalidating.

EP 012 - Shit We Don't KNOW About - Four Seasons Total Landscaping w/ Drew Linsalata
This week, on a very special Shit We Don't Talk About, Mia is joined by prior guest Drew Linsalata to embark on a Shit We Don't KNOW About journey. What don't we know about? We have no idea how President Trump's campaign staff wound up staging a deranged press conference in the dusty parking lot of a tiny landscaping company on the outskirts of Philadelphia.
No, it's not an episode of Veep. It's real life, which makes it that much better!
Normally we're gonna give you some valuable takeaways from the podcast episode, but this time all we got is this:
The press conference was between the fire extinguisher and the yellow garden hose. At a base level, we're all just between a dildo shop and a crematorium, aren't we? Mia falls asleep way too early. It's genetic. Leslie Jones and Patton Oswalt are hilarious. NEVER just call the first number you find on Google. You might also wind up between the fire extinguisher and the garden hose. For full show notes on this episode visit miavoss.live/12

EP 011 - How To Be a Dick (With A Capital D) w/ Marc Ensign
On the 11th episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Mia learns how to be a Dick from guest Marc Ensign, author of the book Be a Dick: How One Person Can Change the World in the Most Unexpected Way. And the book is not what you think at all!
This story of Marc’s friend, Dick, started out as a blog that Wil Wheaton (yes, that Wil Wheaton!) took viral. Marc was inspired by the way Dick lived his life and how he took kindness to the extreme, and then (boom!) a book was born!
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast.
It’s not unheard of to really start your life after 40. You can be a nice person and extraordinarily successful. The two are not mutually exclusive. Be a Dick is about “being” period. Be Humble, Be Present, Be Generous, etc. Every chapter title gives us a goal outside of ourselves. For full show notes on this episode visit miavoss.live/11

EP 010 - Systemic Racism w/ Dr Rob Copeland
On the tenth episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Mia chats with Rob Copeland, educator, counselor, and author of the soon-to-be-published The Synchronization of Life: A Family’s Alignment Pursued. Mia has known Rob since they were kids back in 1979, so you know they have a lot of shit to talk about that we don’t talk about!
First, please just let it be known that black people are tired right now, and rightfully so. Rob is tired, and we need to listen up to that! He is sharing with us why that is and why other people in his shoes and similar shoes(!) are tired, too!
Second, maybe you have some prejudices percolating inside you? Hey, we all do. That’s not a thing to run from, but something to acknowledge. Sometimes, black people are tired because of the way they will be perceived for daring to speak out. Have you heard of “angry black men/women” syndrome? That’s a reality Rob has to deal with--that people might view him that way before he even opens his mouth!
And we haven’t even gotten started. This is one juicy episode. Make sure you listen all the way through. Maybe even don’t multitask as you do!
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast.
Black people are not “just” part of the black experience. Just like a gay person isn’t just gay. Black people are people who have real lives and many fragments to their existence. Look up “code-switching” and “tokenism.” And generally, make it a habit to Google terms and things you don’t understand. Do Mia a favor and when you watch any sort of media, pay attention to all the white folks. How much are you really seeing fair representation of our black and brown friends? The last four years have been hell on earth for sure, but you’re also being exposed to experiences outside yourself, and this is what has been needed for so long--revealing the systems of racism that were put into place to make it seem like the US was rejecting racism. It’s like pacification.

EP 009 - Surviving COVID-19 w/Heather Coleman Voss
On the ninth episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Mia chats with Heather Coleman Voss, a career coach helping people make incredible career transitions. But today, she is sharing how she survived COVID and what her life is like now as a long-term survivor.
Heather thought she had allergies when she first got sick, but then it hit her like a Mack truck. Her body aches felt more like bone aches; she couldn’t stay awake after a 13-hour nap, her headache spread from the top of her head on down, her intestines were a wreck, and her throat was tight. Her dog was her saving grace. She had to take care of him, so she forced herself to keep moving.
See? We don’t deserve dogs!
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast.
You might not know where you pick the virus up--if you do get sick. Heather has no idea when she got infected.COVID is real, and even when you are over the worst, the symptoms can periodically persist. Oh, and of course, there’s no insurance/relief plan for the people who test negative but
Who are still struggling.
Our black and brown friends are getting COVID more than others.

EP 008 - Tara Ijai - Love Revolution
On the eighth episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About; Mia chats with Tara Ijai, of Love Glasses Revolution. She is a proud love rebel and activist and she’s spilling the tea on what that means and why it is so challenging lately.
(For full show notes on this episode go to https://miavoss.live/8)
Tara is a converted Muslim and she shares why there is such a connection between love, light and action. Many times in her life she has had to toe the line and stand firm on not changing who she is and what she needs even in the face of terrorism. She has responded with nothing short of mad love, believing that love is the great remedy for what ails the world.
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast.
Not assuming that people wearing a hijab or other ethnic wear are foreigners. They might speak better English than you! You can bridge the gap of fear with love. You can care about more than one thing at a time! Who knew?Tara’s definition of love is wanting your brother or sister to want what you have. Wearing your love glasses (the heart-shaped ones that frame everybody’s face so well), is an anchor you can hold onto to remind yourself to lead and respond in love.

EP 007 - Sobriety Humor w/ Debbie Scheer
On the seventh episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About; Mia chats with Debbie Scheer, who is a speaker, soon-to-be radio host, and human strategist. Her motto, “If we can laugh about it, then we can surely talk about it,” is right in line with our show. Today’s topic of sobriety might be viewed as a prickly pear by some, but that is exactly why we need to talk about it.

EP 006 - Latinx Representation and Your Battle Is My Battle w/ Marissa Calderon Jimenez
On the sixth episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About; Mia chats with Marissa Calderon Jimenez, a bilingual early childhood professional who is waking us up when it comes to Latin representation in education, policies, and well...everywhere.
In early childhood education (which is a huge part of Marissa’s world) and everywhere else in the world, we are not talking about the fact that most policies, laws, and regulations have been written by people who don’t represent this population.
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast.
Representation matters, and identifying with a person in authority matters, too. Monolingual Spanish-speaking students and families are struggling to learn in the wake of COVID. Being anti-racist is not just a stance; it is a way of life. For full show notes on this episode go to https://miavoss.live/6

Typically, the world is divided up into mothers and non-mothers. Introducing the childless matriarch, a woman of power who might help rear some of the children in her family. They might be an involved aunt, for example.

On the Third episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About; Mia chats with Jessica Sidener, the creator of a Night Out with the Girls (that you heard about in episode two), and the new topic of the day is suicide and depression. Mia invited Jessica to join her again to talk about the flip side of her story surrounding breast cancer when she lost her husband, Tyler, to suicide just six months before receiving her diagnosis. As she describes it, she had to wake up from the nightmare that was her life.

Jessica is a breast cancer survivor whose initiative is moving women (and anyone with breast tissue) to learn about early detection.
People don’t talk about breast health, which is what makes it a perfect subject for this podcast!
