Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) provides practical ways to change the way we think, view past events, and adjust our reactions so that we can enjoy happier, richer lives, and achieve our goals.
NLP offers a set of psychological tools that allow us to apply conscious reasoning to unconscious programming so that we can change the reactions and patterns of behavior that we wish to change in our lives.

READING MATTERS with SUE GRANT-MARSHALL 4 AUGUST 2020- Sue reviews several books
“The news that longlisted 2020 Booker Prize nominee and Zimbabwean author, Tsitsi Dangarembga, was arrested in Harare last week during an anti-government protest, has set the literary world aflutter. She was released and will return to court in September. Her new book, ‘This Mournable Body’( Jacana) follows on her famous debut, ‘ Nervous Conditions,’ which garnered international acclaim.
“I wonder if the Zimbabwean government realizes what a hornet’s nest it will unleash if it jails her – especially if she’s shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Watch this space.
“ I reviewed, ‘Remembering Great Apes’( Wildlife Photographers United), the third huge, glossy book in the highly acclaimed charity series which aims to raise awareness of the plight facing a species and, through book sales, create funds to protect it. An aptly timed publication considering Rafiki, an endangered silverback gorilla, was murdered by poachers a few weeks ago in Uganda for bushmeat.
“ ‘ 100 Books that changed the World’(Batsford) is a glossy, intriguing compendium by Scott Christianson and Colin Salter. Books they include range from the ‘Kama Sutra’, to ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ and Maya Angelou’s, ‘ I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.’
‘ I also chatted about controversial British political scientist and South African journalist, RW Johnson’s entertaining and often humorous memoir, ‘Foreign Native’( Jonathan Ball). It tracks his life from the time he arrived in Durban, as a boy with his parents in 1957, to the present day.
‘ We learn much about SA and world politics. Some of his guest appearances include Tom Sharpe, Ronnie Kasrils, Frederik van Zyl Slabbert and Helen Suzman.”

NDUMISO LINDI and TUMI MORAKE: MARRIED......BUT NOT TO EACH OTHER- Lesedi and Dustin chat to the two comedy legends- 3 AUGUST 2020
Laughing during these trying times can be difficult, but here are two people doing their best to try and make us keep doing exactly that. Lesedi and Dustin catch up with two well known legends of comedy, in this recent interview.
Much like most parts of our lives, the mechanics of love and romance have certainly changed under the captivity of COVID-19 and whether you’re married or single, newly dating or separated, we’re all looking for new ways to navigate love under lockdown…
In a slightly different take on a comedy show, Ndumiso Lindi and Tumi Morake tackle the roles and regulations of marriage and relationships and the pothole-laced roads the sexes have to navigate in their hit show, Married, But Not To Each Other: Lockdown Edition on the 9th of August, from the comfort of your own home.
When asked how the show concept came about, Ndumiso retells the story of how the two were travelling on a comedy adventure and were asked by a customs official: “Are you married?”, to which Ndumiso replied: “Yes!”, realised what he was saying and added: “But not to each other.” And thus, began this comical journey for this wife and husband…of other people!
Married, But Not To Each Other is not a show just about marriage, it’s about the world that these relationships have to survive in. Their unique brands of humour paired with their own risqué and hilarious experiences in marriage and romance makes for memorable viewing.
The show will be an online broadcast at 8PM and carries a PG-16 restriction. Tickets at R80 are available for purchase on the following ticketing platforms: Hero Ticket and Ticketpro.
Proudly brought to you by Blu Blood (www.blublood.com / @blubloodafrica).
About the comedy duo:
Ndumiso Lindi, comedy’s modern traditionalist and the gentleman of South African comedy, otherwise known as Roosta, effortlessly blends new-age style with old-school traditions. His deep voice, soul-warming smile, booming laughter, original content and seamless delivery makes for a comedy act that is outstanding and soulfully South African.
With a comedy career spanning over 12 years and numerous outstanding credentials under her belt, bad momma of comedy - Tumi Morake - continues to be a formidable force in the comedy industry. 16 July 2020- Dustin chats with two guys busy cooking up some comedy, inuendo, and a bit of food, for this Saturday- "Don't burn your sausage" stars Pete Goff-Wood, and Chris Forrest.
In this podcast, Dustin "sits down" with Pete Goffe-Wood, and Chris Forrest, to talk about the upcoming online show this Saturday.
Getting creative online (and in the kitchen), comic genius, Chris Forrest, and celebrity chef, Pete Goffe-Wood, are re-creating a night out by scrumptiously blending comedy and cooking together into the ‘Top Gear’ of cooking shows with their lockdown version of Don’t Burn Your Sausage on the 18th of July.
The show will be a live online broadcast with Pete cooking from Tintswalo Atlantic in Cape Town and Chris from his home in Randburg.
Deliciously funny and rather ‘whisk-qué, this cheeky duo will demonstrate how food and sex are delectably intertwined as they prepare the ultimate seductive 3-course meal with a naughty line-up that will have you salivating salaciously and crying with laughter.
This refreshingly funny show is jam-packed with great humour and great cooking – with Chris working his special brand of South African humour alongside Pete Goffe-Wood’s unmatched cooking talent, candour and naughtiness. This pair will win over your hearts and your stomachs.
Following sold-out shows in Grahamstown, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Windhoek, the duo has cleverly and successfully delivered this live food show to rave reviews from critics and adjusting to the times, this will be their first online show.
“A show that indulges its audiences with a delicious starter, main course, dessert and suggestive humour.” – SowetanLive
“A wonderful new and naughty twist on the good old cooking demo.” – Cue Media
“Cheeky challenge for saucy duo.” – Weekend Post (PE)
Chris Forrest has been on the SA comedy scene since the late nineties and Pete Goffe-Wood (best known as the Masterchef South Africa judge known to crack a joke or two), has been making great food for nearly 30 years. When the two of them met on the set of Celebrity Masterchef SA in 2015, they found that they had a couple of things in common – one of them being the same dry sense of humour and the other, a liking for mouth-watering, delicious food. After the series ended, they decided to combine their respective talents to bring you this culinary comedy show, the likes that have not been seen before in SA.
The show promises to be an absolute hit for both food- and comedy-lovers alike. Tickets for Don’t Burn Your Sausage on the 18th of July are available at R80 via https://mzanzilive.tv/. The show starts at 20h00 CAT.
Proudly brought to you by Mzansi Live in association with Tintswalo Atlantic and La Vierge.

READING MATTERS with SUE GRANT-MARSHALL for 14 July 2020- Guest: Author and writing instructor Mike Nicol
“We all have stories within us. Getting them out is the challenge, so I chatted to Mike Nicol, author of books ranging from two on Nelson Mandela, to literary fiction and crime. We spoke about The Bishop Series as well as The Fish and Vicki Series.
“Nicol’s now turned his considerable talents to online writing courses – for aspirant authors of fiction: memoir: non-fiction: or writing a book in the virtual company of other writers around the world. Go to: writeonline.pro.
“I spoke about the HarperCollins (Jonathan Ball) plan to publish the life story of our amazing Siya Kolisi who captained SA’s 2019 World Cup Winning Rugby Team. Two fascinating glossy books on astronomy have been published by Penguin Random House: 2020 Sky Guide Africa South; and a much chunkier, Night Skies of Botswana, that includes local star lore, by astronomer, Stephen O’Meara.
“Both have glorious depictions of our night skies as well as monthly star charts.”

COVID-19: Why does the Government report the TOTAL number of cases instead of the ACTIVE number of cases?
I do not often do this, but I saw a post from someone who is a great guy, Mr. Brent Lindeque this morning on facebook.
I decided there was a need for comment on this, and so we discussed it on the programme.
In a post this morning, Brent asks the question "Why does the Government and the media continue to report on and put emphasis on, the TOTAL number of cases of Covid-19 in South Africa, instead of the number of ACTIVE cases? The media of course uses the official information, without covering at all, or at times putting very little emplasis on, the number after recoveries, which is very much different. Sensationalism or fear-mongering?
I have been saying this for months, and I completely agree with Brent.

Author and media personality, Sam Cowen’s book, ‘ Brutal School Ties: The Parktown Boys’ Tragedy’( Melinda Ferguson Books) tells a deeper tale than that of water polo coach, Collan Rex’s 23 year prison sentence for sexual assault and assault.
“In the boy victims’ own words she has exposed, ‘ the casual evil lurking in a community founded on fear and depravity,’ for she lays bare the code of silence and shame in the 100 year old school. Rex said in court that he did what had been done to him when he was a Parktown School boy.
“This book needs to be read by all SA teachers, schoolchildren, parents and yes, headmasters.
“I also chatted about Exclusive Book’s Homebru campaign which celebrates SA authors’ writing: and also about the Prince Harry and Meghan book, ‘ Finding Freedom’( HarperCollins) due out in August.
“ Hilary Prendini Toffoli’s sophisticated and witty, “Loves and Miracles of Pistola’ (Penguin) is now available in print.
“I’m an avid fan of Irish author, Sebastian Barry. His new book, ‘ A Thousand Moons,’( Faber&Faber) about a young Lakota(American Indian) girl adopted by two American Civil War veterans, Thomas McNulty and John Cole, will make you weep… and laugh. Perfectly timed in the wake of the George Floyd killing.”

READING MATTERS with SUE GRANT-MARSHALL for 30 June 2020- Guest: Author Lauren Beukes, and much more!
“ Sensational SA author, Lauren Beukes, is riveting us and the international book world yet again – with her latest dystopian thriller, Afterland (Umuzi). Set in 2023 where most of the planet’s male population has died of a virus, the remaining 10 percent or so, are highly sort-after for their sperm. That’s why a mother flees with her son (12) from the most dangerous person she knows - her greedy sister.
“Lauren Beukes is an extraordinary talent – this will grip you from the word go.
“After my chat with Lauren I talk about Herman Mashaba’s, The Accidental Mayor( Penguin), written by his former chief of staff, Michael Beaumont.
“Maybe you’ve read, Doctor Zhivago, by the great Russian author, Boris Pasternak – or seen the blockbuster movie? It was banned in his own country, at the height of the Cold War. Now debut author, Lara Prescott, has penned an international bestseller, The Secrets We Kept (Penguin) about the CIA smuggling the book into its homeland. They used American women typists as spies. Based on fact. Stunning stuff.”

Dee Hendrickx from BRAINY BIRDS PARROT RESCUE AND REHABILITATION CENTRE- Edenvale joins us on air live! 29 June 2020
The Centre was founded by Dee Hendrickx, in 2014, the non-profit organisation hopes to rehome, rehabilitate and care for abused birds.
From BENONI CITY TIMES ARTICLE DATED 6 June, 2020, by Stephan Lehman:
Besides providing care to birds in need, the organisation gives educational talks to schools and companies about the upkeep of birds.
It also offers services such as clipping of wings and nails and beak trimming.
As an NPO, Brainy Birds is reliant on donations from the public to keep their doors open.
Funds donated by the public is used for the upkeep of the property, purchasing food and paying veterinary bills.
With the current global pandemic and current regulations in place, the NPO has been unable to host fund-raising events.
They house over 2,200 birds, and Dee tells Dustin and Lesedi, that due to the way these birds were abused, they cannot simply be "rehomed", and must be kept where they are. In addition, the owner of the property must sell. This presents both an opportunity and a challenge, as buying the property would be great, however this requires One million rand. They must fund the purchase in the next couple months.
If you can help, or know someone who can help, please visit their page on facebook to donate: https://www.facebook.com/BrainyBirds/

Cancel culture and the dangers of attempting to erase history- With Tat Wolfen and Dustin Miller- Friday 19 June 2020
Normally we speak about cinema, television, and theatre on Fridays at 11, but today Tat and Dustin decided to push into other areas, specifically the politics of "cancel culture" and the dangers of not knowing history.
The events happening in the United States at the moment are extremely unsettling, and these attempts to erase history, simply because one does not like the events of history, can be extremely hazardous to mankind. Winston Churchill warned of the dangers of not knowing history, being that one is doomed to repeat it.
Among this chat, is a season 3 episode of THE SIMPSONS, which was specifically written by Matt Groening for the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. This episode, entitled, STARK RAVING DAD, has apparently been removed from all streaming platforms, such as Disney Plus, as it is considered offensive to some, and God only knows why. The good news, is you can find it on YouTube and watch the episode in its entirety. (You can find it in parts on YouTube, by clicking HERE)
Politics and political correctness strike again.

READING MATTERS- Sue Grant-Marshall chats to Author Mark Gevisser and more!
Yes, it's youth day. No, Sue did not do the show today, but not to worry, we still have a great reading matters podcast for you!
From Sue: “I chatted to author extraordinaire, Mark Gevisser, about several books he’s reviewed on plagues, pandemics and epidemics, written between 1948 and 2019, published both locally and internationally.
“Causes for them and our Covid-19 crisis, range from the agricultural revolution which required formerly nomadic humans to live in settlements, to climate change, jet-set travel and wet wildlife markets. The dangers we face from disease can be attributed to our own success as the human species, said Mark. Go to www.markgevisser.com for his book list.
“I reviewed, SILVER (Headline), by acclaimed international crime writer, Chris Hammer and whilst I enjoyed it, unfortunately it doesn’t match his first scorcher, Scrublands.
“The 2020 Women’s Prize for Fiction shortlist (formerly the Orange Prize) includes Hilary Mantel’s, The Mirror & the Light (Jonathan Ball). I’m betting she wins it as well as the 2020 Booker Prize for Fiction.”

Getting the right sound- Talking about professional audio systems with Mark Randazzo- 14 June 2020
You walk into an auditorium, concert venue, church, or meeting room. What you hear when the sound begins to come through the speakers is awful. Why?
So many times I have walked into a public venue such as one of the above, and heard exactly this. Some horrible sound coming from the Public Address system. Most of the time because someone thought quickly throwing a couple speakers on a stand, connecting a few cables, a microphone, was all that was needed, when in reality, so much more goes into a system such as this.
Mark Randazzo has been designing and operating sound systems for churches, and public events, even mobile units, for years, and before a single cable is unrolled, he has sat down and designed the layout of the system.
We talk in this podcast about why each cable, each microphone, each choice of speaker, is important.
If you would like to contact Mark, for assistance, he is available via e-mail: mvrandazzo@gmail.com or by phone in the USA: +1-734-564-8933

READING MATTERS with Sue Grant-Marshall- Sue chats to Author Michiel Heyns 5 May 2020
“A Poor Season for Whales (Jonathan Ball) by multi-award winning author and literary translator, Michiel Heyns, grabbed me from the first page – such is the tension with which he’s infused it.
“Right up front we read about the almost-staid architect, ‘it was hardly to be foreseen that in her fifty- sixth year she would kill a man with a kitchen knife.’ The ex-wife of a husband who’s left her for another man, turns her back on Cape Town and settles in Hermanus. Clever, elegant, sumptuous reading.
“Few of us alive when Ahmed Timol (29) was pushed to his death out of the notorious John Vorster Square police station will ever forget it. His nephew, Imtiaz A. Cajee’s book, The Murder of Ahmed Timol (Jacana), provides a compelling account of the gentle youngster’s life and killing. Neil Aggett’s death in the same station followed a decade later.

READING MATTERS: Sue Grant-Marshall talks about Jacob Dlamini's new book "THE TERRORIST ALBUM" and much more! 9 June 2020
“Historian, author, journalist, professor Jacob Dlamini’s astounding new book, The Terrorist Album (Harvard University Press) takes its title from an album of the same name, containing over 7 000 photographs of apartheid’s enemies from the 1960s to the 1990s. They were secretly sent by the security police to 500 police stations throughout South Africa for purposes of identification, torture and sometimes elimination.
“When all the albums were ordered destroyed in the early 1990s, three survived – one in the National Archives in Pretoria. It is that which inspired Jacob to investigate the people behind the mugshots and produce what will become a national treasure.
“The Foundling (Manilla Press/ Jonathan Ball) by Stacey Halls, is a heart-pounding thriller about a poor mother, Bess Bright, who leaves her illegitimate daughter for safe care at London’s Foundling Hospital in 1754. Six years later when she returns to claim her, she’s told by the dismayed staff that the little girl has gone – taken by her – Bess. How and why? Stacey Halls who shot to international fame with, The Familiars, captures two mothers’ anguish and Georgian London in equal measure.

“ We travel down Africa’s East Coast with him via Aden and Mombasa; visit Sophiatown, Lourenco Marques (Maputo) and meet Abdullah Ibrahim and Miriam Makeba. There’s an illicit relationship (cue the immoral Immorality Act), abundant laughter and sex. A joy to read - with beautifully crafted prose.
“ Two children’s story books on Covid-19, ‘ My Hero is You’(IASC: interagencystandingcommittee.org) and ‘ Coronavirus: A Book for Children’ (Nosycrow.com) answer difficult questions about the virus in terms children will understand.

Why it is important to keep fit during lockdown- especially for older adults- with Kim Hauman 4 June 2020
Kim Hauman, chats to us about why it is important for those who are older, to keep fit and healthy, in this time when they are staying home more, due to Covid-19. We should not use this time as an excuse not to work out, she says, but rather, we should seek other ways to stay fit, even from home. Kim said there are several very simple things we can do right in the comfort of our own home, and although we are unable to go to our local Gym, and workout with our friends, it is possible to have that community using the internet, and modern technology.
SILVER FIT is a group helping older adults to do just that. It is never too late to begin, and you are never too old, Kim says.

“ Hedi Lampert has written the first book in the world as a novel, about Fragile X Syndrome, an inherited genetic condition, that results in intellectually challenged babies being born. The Trouble with My Aunt (Porcupine Press) based on her own family’s experience, is infused with humour, some sex, lots of Jewish food, and serious information delivered through a highly palatable family saga.
“A book that makes you giggle - and then cry.
“ Desperately craving a good night’s rest? Take (not a pill) but a good dose of bestselling British author and doctor’s, Fast Asleep (Faber &Faber/Jonathan Ball) by Dr Michael Mosley. His own insomnia and search for answers makes this a riveting and easy read.”

LOOKING UP with Professor David Block- We chat all things Dragon, SpaceX, NASA, and ISS! 1 June 2020
For someone such as myself, a person always fascinated with space, whom, as a little boy, stared up at the stars, speaking with Professor David Block, Professor Emeritus, of Mathematics and Applied Sciences at the University of Witwaterstrand, was an honour indescribable in words.
In this short chat, we spoke about the historic events we all witnessed over the past weekend, and even managed to chat about the past (Apollo, Space Shuttle), and also looked to the future a bit. SpaceX and Elon Musk brought America to space, from American soil, for the first time in 9 years since the Space Shuttle programme ended in 2011, and South Africans should be proud that the effort was spearheaded by SpaceX, an American company founded by a South African, Mr. Elon Musk. It is also worth noting, this is the first time in history, a commercially-operated spacecraft has carried humans into space. The technological advancement of the SpaceX Dragon Crew capsule is such, it will be used for many years to come, and has the capability to carry us beyond low-earth orbit, hopefully soon to the moon, and Mars!

We were honoured to have two members of infamous South African music group FOUR JACKS AND A JILL live in studio with us, to chat about the bands BRAND NEW TRACK, Township Taxi, and much more! Dustin recalls growing up in Detroit and hearing the song, in the 1980's, having no idea the band was South African. Now he has the opportunity to meet some of the legendary band!

THE WOLFMAN AT THE MOVIES 29 May 2020- Charlie Chaplin and son Michael Chaplin
Each week, we chat to Tat Wolfen, a/k/a "THE WOLFMAN" about his recommendations for television, and or movies. Todays episode took us back a few years, to a time when talking in movies was "unheard of", and Actors had to use other skills to relay their message.
From The Wolfman: "I was glad to share my views about Charles Chaplin's 'A King in New York' (1957) - a film that led me to entirely fresh perspectives on Chaplin's political beliefs. Film historians often say that Chaplin was a communist, when, in fact, he was actually a libertarian - even though he never labelled himself as such."

Conversation with Owen Lonzar, about THE DANCERS FUND 27 May 2020
From Owen Lonzar:
I have been in the entertainment industry since I was 14 and we all know the struggle is very real for the arts in South Africa and always has been. It makes us creatives more determined and gives us a resilience that we use to further our cause, because in truth the arts are a cause. The Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown has brought suffering to all South Africans and I have empathy for all of us, but we must each pick a cause to support or we will lose the battle. If we each pick a cause, then the problem becomes fightable and my cause is to help struggling artists. It is easy to become bitter about the situation of the arts but that only leads to one becoming swallowed up by grief and in turn leads to emotional paralysis.
I chose to launch a fundraising campaign on FB and through Back a Buddy. Fundraising takes commitment but ultimately it is the kindness and support of strangers and friends who carry it along. We have raised over R22000 in 10 days, but the need is so great that I have already spent all that helping over 50 artists and the list grows every hour.
The campaign advert appears below. To support this campaign and to increase awareness of South African performers across all genres I have also launched the #WaitingInTheWingsSA campaign on my Instagram page where I feature black and white photos with a pop of color of the performers in a mask doing what they do. It speaks to the mask being a barrier to what we do because artists cannot truly connect to the art or their audience when covered by the mask. Each photo is accompanied by the artist story and their wish once lockdown ends. I would like to turn this into a travelling exhibition on a digital format (tablets/phones on display where people can scroll through the photos and stories) as a testimony to the resilience of South African performers and ultimately the people of South Africa because the soul of the country lives in the ARTS – OwenLonzar_entertainment_sa
My name is Owen Lonzar, I have been a choreographer in South Africa for the past 30 years and I have had the honor of working with many incredible artists who have heart and have dedicated their lives to entertaining audiences at corporate and commercial events.
They have given so much of themselves and now need your help to survive. No events or performances are allowed meaning they are all unemployed and struggling even to feed themselves.
I am looking to send each person in need a grocery voucher to shop for essentials to keep them and their families going for a couple of weeks at least. I am aiming for R350 - R500 per person. All funds will be managed by me and tracked for recording keeping purposes.
The South African government does not have anything in place to offer financial aid or relief for freelance performers.
You are their hope right now so please donate what you can, every little bit helps.
*As per the campaign creator’s request, funds raised will be paid directly to One Small Act of Kindness*
To assist, please donate via this link:

Reading Matters with Sue Grant-Marshall 26 May 2020
“Imagine as a little girl, shovelling big dogs’ shit daily, being forced to go home always through the back door, being regularly sexually abused by your step-mother’s two brothers, and dancing at gun point with drunk, groping men.
“That was debut author Claudine Shiels nightmare reality when her ill blood mother walked out on the family. Shiels describes SA’s oldest sex abuse case poignantly and deftly in her memoir, Walking Through Front Doors(Bookstorm). The key to her survival was never losing hope. The case comes to Court later this year.
Distinguished author and historian, Jacob Dlamini, has used a National Archives album with over 7 000 photos of apartheid’s enemies, collected by then Security Police, to blow apart the myth that the brutal, murderous State was efficient and organised. The Terrorist Album will be published by Harvard University Press shortly. Watch this space.

Mark speaks about some of his experiences as a Master Electrician, with over 35 years in the business, and talks about some of the craziest things he has seen. He also gives some advice about what to do when things happen around your house. D.I.Y. is not typically the best approach when it comes to sorting out issues around your house dealing with the electrical system.
Bottom line: When in doubt, call a pro.

Opening in 1993, it was the first bio-musical of its kind in South Africa and shaped they way we do musical theatre in so many ways, ever since!
And I just love the music! Buddy Holly's music is timeless!
&SCENE's BUDDY '93 : TOGETHER AGAIN kicks off its new, more intimate version tomorrow, archiving celebrated moments in South African theatre long past!
