We made it out of 2022, and into 2023.

Whew…

Let's talk about what needs to happen in 2023, to overcome the negative of the last few years.

While we may not like it, we do need to embrace the idea that the world is still changing all around us.

We keep HOPING that all the negative changes that were brought to us would somehow re-correct themselves.

How has your experience been?

Still waiting for the...

Good ole days?

Or

Are you ready to take charge of your business...

Once and for all?

.

The way I see it.

We can either learn from our past...

Or suffer because of it.

I say we should learn from it.

The people you serve in your business are looking to you to be the best you can be.

They listen to you.

They read your content.

They click on your links.

They care about your causes too.

And they want you to do well in 2023.

So be the business person that follows through.

Be the business that shows your customers and followers that you can do better.

Not because times were tough before, and they're going to be better moving forward.

No, nothing like that.

They WILL continue to be tough.

This week, for me and I believe the whole of America, has been cold.

We have had an Arctic Storm come through from the West coast and head towards the East (Florida) where I live.

Today is December 25, 2022.

Merry Christmas to those that celebrate the holiday.

To everyone else, happy Sunday.

Of course, by the time you hear this, it will be Monday morning.

For most of you, this is another day off, being that Christmas fell on a Sunday.

Though, some may have to work to support hospitals, fire stations, the police force, and other critical functions.

And don't let us forget our store clerks and managers that keep us fed, day in and day out.

EP93: Avatar 2

As I am recording this podcast for release on Monday, it dawned on me that the Avatar 2 movie that was released Friday can be used to make a point.

I did go to see it with a special friend.

Though I do know that the movie is different from the original, it still has similar elements that take us back to the original.

From the previews...

They remind us of the problems the inhabitants of Pandora had with the greedy commercial earthlings and the military that tried to harvest precious unobtanium minerals and displace the Na’vi.

In movies, just like your own writing, whether on website pages and/or email series, we need to keep a consistent theme that our readers can follow.

Avatar 2 reminds us, according to the mind of James Cameron, that the invaders (the earthlings) are bad.

I want to avoid saying anything that would spoil your experience watching the movie, except to tell you that this movie, for me, was even better than the first one.

Seriously!

That is saying a lot because the first Avatar movie changed our understanding of how movies could be made.

It was revolutionary.

Nothing has changed...

James Cameron did it again.

Avatar 2 - the way of the water - continues his saga.

Let me tie this into our writing.

Welcome back, my friends.

I am reminded that being an online marketer is something that must serve two purposes.

The first is to serve others.

This is vital.

Anyone that doesn't care about helping others should not be in the business of selling products or training anyone online.

It will show how they market themselves and their product.

The second is to serve ourselves.

This is because no matter whether we are the one serving, or the one receiving service, we all benefit from dependable and functional instruction.

As the one serving others, I have been reminded over and over again that we too benefit from the instruction given.

Reminders are crucial in mastering any skill.

As we speak or teach, not only do others learn...

But we are reminded as well.

And many times as we prepare for the message or training we are preparing to give, we too are learning, or re-learning.

When I was in the Navy, over 4 decades ago, I remember being asked to train crew members on how to clean periscopes.

Yes, periscopes.

The problem for me was that I was an Electronics Technician, not an Opticalman.

So I had to learn how to clean periscopes first, so I could train those that had previously learned to do it.

So...

Welcome back, my friends.

Let me ask you a question.

What goes well with advertising and is not too difficult to conquer?

Logically, as soon as someone clicks on an ad, they will be funneled somewhere.

What is the next logical step?

Unless the ad was a FB Leads Ad, there must be a way to capture interest.

Clicking on “Learn More”, clearly means, “tell me more”, right?

So, there needs to be a way to keep the conversation flowing.

This is where my thinking [and many others as well] differs drastically from many other online marketers.

For those other marketers, the next step is to get someone to give their name and email address, so they can add it to a list.

For them, anyone on their list is fair game, and they will send them marketing emails forever until they buy something, unsubscribe, or die.

I don't believe that is how people want to be treated.

How about you?

Is that how you like being rewarded for sharing your contact details?

There is a better way...

In Florida, we just experienced one of the biggest Hurricanes “Ian”, and it left us without power, internet access, and all the other cool things we “All” take for granted.

But power was restored faster than anticipated, and here we are.

So let's get started.

One of the quickest ways to drive traffic to any webpage, any landing page, any blog post, or any other means of marketing you, your brand, or your business, is via paid ads.

These can come from FB, Instagram, Pinterest, or YouTube.

You can also use Google ads to drive traffic as well.

Of course, if you don't want to pay for ads, you can use word of mouth, SEO, and/or other forms of organic reach.

However, there are no guarantees that organic efforts will ever drive traffic, or compel anyone to read, watch, or purchase anything.

Let’s be very clear about this…

We all need to feel successful.

That would include...

You...

Me...

And...

Any person looking to transform themselves from who they are (presently) to become what they want to be.

As business owners, creative professionals, and marketers (especially marketers)…

We all need to create awareness, generate leads, make sales, fulfill our obligations to our clients and/or customers, and make a profit that keeps us in business.

That’s what we need.

But, what we want — more than anything — is this sense of control.

We want...

No!

Let me say this instead.

We need to know that what we do in our business, and the results we achieve (and our income) are stable, predictable, and scalable.

We need to know that through our efforts that next month, and those that follow, will be better than the present one.

And for me, and I believe for you too...

That the things we do that contribute to our community - that there’s going to be an opportunity to increase that value we contribute to the world, expand our horizons, our relationships, and our income.

“United we stand, divided we fall.”

The phrase "United we stand, divided we fall" has been traced back to the Greek storyteller Aesop, who lived during the 6th century B.C.

Most people know him for the fables that have been handed down through time in his name.

One such fable is The Four Oxen and the Lion.

The last line of the fable The Four Oxen and the Lion is the phrase "united we stand, divided we fall."

It reads…

"A lion used to prowl about a field in which four oxen used to dwell. Many a time he tried to attack them; but whenever he came near they turned their tails to warn another so that whichever way he approached them he was met by the horns of one of them. At last, however, they fell a-quarrelling among themselves, and each went off to pasture alone in the separate corner of the field. Then the Lion attacked them one by one and soon made an end of all four.

United we stand, divided we fall."

We are at Part 3 in our series on Crafting Your Story.

I hope you are enjoying it.

While not all of your broadcast newsletter emails need to have stories included, it would definitely make for easier reading.

And of course, until your audience truly gets a sense of who you are, and why you are there, there will be believability issues.

Your audience basically wants to know - “what's your story”.

Can you blame them?

Isn't that what you want anytime you decide to place trust in someone else?

Letting your audience get to know who you are is one way to build rapport with them.

And I’m sure that is important o you as well.

But…

This doesn't mean you have to write a memoir to let people know everything about you - no, nothing like that.

But, slowly and deliberately, let them get to know you.

Just as you would anyone else you just met.

Such as:

“Hi, my name is James, what is yours?”

“I don't think we have met yet. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?”

“What started you on this path you are on?”

Or

“How do you think you could help me?”

If you wait for them to ask you those questions, self-doubt about your motives will creep in.

Not good.

Good to have you back again.

I’ve been diving into a few books on Storytelling.

The first one is, “The Story Advantage: Unleash the Power of Storytelling to Engage, Inspire, and Influence.”

The second one is, “The Story Factor, by Annette Simmons.”

The truth is that we all tell stories all the time, even when we don’t realize what we are doing.

We tell stories while at work.

…on social media.

And we’re telling stories when we chat with our friends.

All day…

Every day we are surrounded by stories from others, and the ones we create on our own.

That’s every day you.

However the businessperson you, you have some hurdles too.

As a new business owner, how do you let people know of the expertise you have?

If you are like MOST entrepreneurs just starting, you don’t know if you’re good enough. Wondering if you can get others to work with you. Doubting your credentials.

It’s normal. Self-doubt affects even the best people online, and offline. Hollywood’s elite are succumbed by it. CEOs of huge companies are among those that feel its effects.

And yet, they make movies.

They still build huge companies.

They tackle and overcome huge obstacles.

And so can you.

Most people don’t like talking about themselves.

But when it comes to running a business, and showing prospective customers and clients what you are good at, and the strengths you have, you must learn how to articulate your strengths. And be honest about your weaknesses too.

Another thing too…

No matter how good you are at the skill(s) you have, no one cares. No one wants coaching, or another product or course.

What they want is transformation.

People want to fix their problems, and move on.

So…

I was listening to a podcast the other day.

It was Nick Warren's podcast. He has no problem talking about almost anything and will [somehow] always find a way to create a business reference.

And had recently completed a series on metaphors.

In this particular episode of his, Nick brilliantly began talking about dishwashers.

Yeah, dishwashers of all things!

He mentions that a buddy of his tagged him the other day in a message about dishwasher cleaning tablets.

Nick then went on and mentioned that he does not own one.

He said he didn't want one either.

He mentioned that the cottage where he and his wife lives [in England] is too small for one, and he is not convinced that they are better than not having one.

He said in most of the places where he stays when away on business trips or vacation, there usually is a dishwasher.

But he does not use them.

Nick mentions that of the two functions of doing dishes, washing, and drying, he is more fond of washing up.

He said that as he sees it, washing the dishes is good for the environment.

He said it brings order to chaos and he gets enjoyment from doing it, knowing he did something positive. 

That he is contributing.

The words we speak…

The ones we write…

The ones that speak of tales…

These are the words that create the stories in our lives.

And believe me...

We ALL have stories to tell.

I have a story in my head.

And so do you.

We're not all that different...

You and I.

We live lives of desperation and pleasure.

We have good times - and bad.

In all of it, we live our lives based on what we believe to be true.

Living a life based on how things are supposed to be.

We all, you and I, wake up each day knowing what we will be doing. Or at least what we're scheduled to do.

And so we live out the life we told ourselves is how it should be.

All based on a story.

You most assuredly have one, too. And that story drives the actions that you take.

The work you do.

The food you eat.

The movies you watch.

Who you marry.

And who you don't.

Some call these things our preferences.

But they are not YOUR preferences. They are the ones you inherited from your family, your friends, and your dreams.

Others call them “the stories we tell ourselves”.

Some even call it our worldview.

But it is just a part of our worldview.

Before we dig our way into this episode…

Let’s just do a quick recap from the last episode.

Just in case some of you had missed it. It was the second episode diving into “Funnels”. So there was one before that too.

We started with a Funnel 101 bit of information. It was about the start of the very first funnel back in 1898. It even talked about a few things that we would not have had back then if you and I had somehow slipped back in time.

We mentioned the AIDA…

Awareness, Interest, Desire, and Action. The four mechanisms of creating sales or conversions.

Then we discussed how the AIDA Funnel of 1898, when it was first introduced, no longer functions in today's world, because we as a people think, and act differently. We were a people with different worldviews.

We found out that our problem today is “Attention” or the lack of it. We all live today in an 8-second attention span world.

We NEED to find a way to attract people to our message, product, course, or mastermind.

But not just anybody either. We CAN NOT serve ALL people. We need to attract to us only those that would truly benefit from the help we can provide. Even if we could help everyone, we cannot do it on ONE piece of content. On just one Blog Post. One FB ad.

On just one MANIFESTO.

We need to learn how to filter out the people that fall within our world of influence. Encourage them to take action. Gently Pull them into your world through the mastery of attraction marketing.

And everyone else, can, through the use of your words find their way back to whatever it was they were doing before. Kindly help them know that you are not there to serve them. I DID say to be kind!

I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been playing in this online sandbox for quite some time.

On a literal beach, with tons of sand around you, you can create whatever your heart desires.

Who doesn’t like making sand castles?

Sitting on a beach, breathing in the salty air, relaxing and unwinding...

Feels comforting, thinking about playing in a box like that.

But other things are related to boxes too.

Sometimes boxes are talked about as if they were not a place we would want to be.

I mean...

We constantly hear people say to “think outside the box” - so my question to you is this - what is wrong with the box?

Usually, the statement just refers to thinking differently about common ways of doing things.

.

.

.

But I don’t think - the term "thinking outside the box" - was meant for just that.

I believe thinking outside the box, is a way to motivate ourselves to be more creative.

Case in point.

When I sit down to write my podcast, to be honest, I usually have no clue what it will be about. [But I don’t just make stuff up - promise]

Sure I have things I can draw inspiration from. Like my good buddy, Nick Warren at storiesmeanbusiness.com.

I listen to his podcast daily if possible. And when my life gets in the way, as it always does, I binge on the ones I missed.

They’re only a few minutes long, so why not?

I'm always going through courses gleaming with different perspectives on how to market online. Some are better than others, but there is always something good to learn from it.

And now, back to that box.

Being creative, allows people to do things they normally wouldn’t do. I guess that’s the basic definition of creativity right?

Doing things most people will not or cannot do.

You know what I mean, right?

They usually start rolling out right after one of “our favorite gurus” - I’m using air quotes - starts marketing a new - or new to us – product, course, or membership.

Learning how to ethically influence people, help them live better lives, and to help them become better people, is a skill that always results in good.

For the love of all that is good and right in this world, do marketers continue to market products costing thousands of dollars, only to promote them for a fraction of their cost?

If you can market a $3,000 product for 80% off - and sell it for $600, then stick a $600 price on it and sell it for that.

The training and subject matter are what I wish I had had when I started.

Some of the knowledge I share has cost me thousands of dollars to learn.

I learned a long time ago, that if I just got out of my own way, and started following people that do exactly what I wanted to do, I would learn more, quicker, and in the end, far less expensively in the process.

Here we are ready for another podcast.

Let’s get to it.

Online marketing has two different viewpoints.

One viewpoint is from the customer, while the other is from the creator [the marketer].

As a prospective customer, you have a unique viewpoint based on your perception of the marketers' product or service.

In the case of Disney, there are probably not many people that do not know the brand.

Disney has theme parks, movies, animation technology, and travel destinations which include hotels in many parts of the world.

So any Disney advertising would have a good chance of attracting attention because Disney has built up a good reputation.

But if a marketer is new to the world of marketing or introducing a new product, it becomes very important to establish a reputation and to create resonance with the prospective customer.

Today's podcast is entitled “After the Click?!”.

So naturally, you may be thinking about what happens after someone reads a marketing piece, and decides to click on the link.

That was what I wanted you to think, but it is not what I want to talk about.

Confused?

Not for long.

Remember, a while back we talked about planning out things (you know our goals) and working from the end backward.

Our goals are what we want, but to achieve them, we must create a plan that ends with our goals in mind.

Clicking on a link is the goal.

Maybe though, what happens after the click is the true destination.

So you have a goal…

The prospective customer has just finished reading something captivating.

Or…

They watched an impressive video.

And maybe…

They were told an exhilarating story that took them down a path toward a fairy tale dream they may have had themselves.

They were ALL motivated to click on a link BECAUSE it just made sense to do so.

Remember the movie “You’ve Got Mail”?

It was 1998, starring a younger Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

An email was still fun back then.

I remember people just walking around saying “you've got mail”, then giggling all the time.

You didn't mind getting an email or two.

IF YOU EVER HAD AN EMAIL ACCOUNT (back then).

Am I right?

Of course, I am.

Computers we're still a novelty for most people.

And if you wanted to check your mail or your email, most people had to listen to their modem make some weird alien sounds. Remember that?

I do.

Those were some exciting times for sure.

Gurus we're still figuring out how to make money online.

There was no Facebook.

There was no Google.

No Instagram.

No YouTube.

No Windows as we know it. It was still getting figured out.

Many people were still using DOS and Windows 95 was struggling to catch on. It was the crappy Windows Version, after Windows 3.11.

Then, Windows 98 is released.

Finally, something that made people smile again. A windows environment that just worked.

That was then...

Fast forward, 24 years later.

We ALL want things to work exactly the way they are in our minds. Our business plan is perfect. The goals we set will become real. But, life gets in the way. Reality takes over. Things change.

In 1993 I left the US Navy.

My dream was to become a business person.

That was the goal.

It wasn’t something I just woke up and did.

And it wasn’t a pipe dream either.

Let’s not be confused - I HAVE spent a huge amount of time dreaming.

As a child, like ALL children, you included, I spent a lot of time dreaming of what life would be like when I become 16, 21, and beyond.

But my plan to become a successful business person was something I had in mind for a very long time.

So I began to devise a way to make it real.

I spent a lot of time researching the business I was buying into. Essentially I was purchasing a turn-key business.

The business model was proven to work. [You can still see it in commercials even now, over 30 years later.]

So, naturally, I convinced myself that I too could make a place for myself in this world of business.

I don’t think there was this cool word, entrepreneur, being used in 1993.

So I purchased this turn-key business, which cost me $14,000 at the time. I drove from Connecticut to Indiana to take possession of the hardware and software that together formed the foundation of this new business.

I was happy.

I was free.

And still…

I was scared!

I didn’t know it yet, but I would soon learn, that purchasing a business - even a turn-key business, did NOT make you a business person.

But I had a dream, and I was on my way.

Pretty much everything we do is somewhat based on a story someone told us or one we have told ourselves.

These stories even create the way we [you and I] see ourselves because it helps define how the world reacts to us.

After reading a few books on the brain, and how it sees, [or better said] how it perceives our view of reality, it is clear, that the brain we use to navigate the world we live in, may just be making some of it up.

Because the world we live in is ever-changing, if we are not growing along with it, we are effectively embracing stagnation.

Marketing online can at times feel like your walking up the down escalator. The moment you stop your forward movement, you cannot help but be dragged back down.

Yes, there is no time to just hang out; nor is there a lot of time to figure out all this marketing stuff.

I know that seems to be a little bit out there.

But I promise you this…

If you do your best to find something that you can improve on, over time, you will see that the world will slow down somewhat to allow you to keep up.

If you had listened to the podcast last week, the episode talked about being a solopreneur.

And you may be thinking - right about now - how can one person keep up with companies that may have teams of people working for them.

My answer to you is to become efficient in what you DO do.

The 80/20 principle - says that there are things that take up only 20% of your time and yet they contribute to 80% of your growth.

Your job is to find those things…

No one goes online and looks at EVERYTHING at one time, right?

You're looking for something that answers your question.

Google gives you choices too.

You pick the one that best delivers on your request.

Your niching down further - narrowing your market - making it easier to find an answer.

So, if you wanted to market to only those that need your product or service wouldn’t it just make sense to target them too?

Another week has slipped on by.

When we left off last week, we spoke about identifying your skills. 

This is needed for a few reasons.

First of all, imposter syndrome is real and inhabits most people. It causes a lot of discomforts, and can, if allowed, derail a career before it even starts.

Ever been there before?

Nobody wants that.

I don’t!

I assume you don’t!

So we talked about how to stop it in its tracks.

It involved looking within.

This is where we have to look at the skills that are already present.

No matter what it is that we want to do, we have two main choices available to us.

We either have the skills, or we do not.

If we don’t have the skills – you know – the ones we want to share, of course, we would have to train ourselves to learn them.

That may seem like the worst thing, but in reality, it does something beneficial.

Where does it go?

I don’t know about you, but…

For a long time, I would simply stare out into nothingness and wonder, when will it come? I’d been in deep thought, struggling to get clarity. Looking for answers to my inner-most questions.

I suspect it happens to a lot of people.

According to “The Breakout Principle”

Following the deep thinking, and struggle phase, simply letting go of thought and letting the world give back [the Release], is how many people, like you and I, combat the unknown. It is how to “Tap into Creativity”.

I spoke about this not too long ago.

It was episode 42 “tapping into creative thought”.

I mentioned reading the book “The Breakout Principle” by Herbert Benson, M.D. and William Proctor.

In their book, they described how to become inspired, on purpose.

Being creative is an important component in becoming successful as a business owner.

There is so much to do.

As an entrepreneur, creativity is not just a nice thing to have.

It MUST be present!

And thankfully, creativity can be learned.

Life just moved at a different pace.

A more peaceful pace of living.

And people were still afraid of change.

Today…

We see change happening all around us.

When was the last time you saw the movie “Jerry Maguire”?

It was hilarious right?

As Jerry [played by Tom Cruise] struggled to get his career on track, we could feel his pain as he was pulled through the mud by his last pro football, on-again, off-again client, played by Cuba Gooding Jr.

Sure the “Show me the money” bit was funny, but I’m thinking about the “Help me, help you” bit.

Though it was funny then, it has a real meaning today. One we can use to our advantage.

Helping others during times of distress, or frustration…

…is what will show what kind of person and marketer you are.

It will help others get pulled towards you, your business, and your service or product.

So, while we can all laugh about Jerry wanting to help others, with the motivation more on saving his own skin, than the athlete’s, I hope you can see that the help we should be offering is supposed to be different.

As it should be.

As marketers, WE get to choose who WE want to help. I’m sure some OTHER marketers choose, like Jerry did, for selfish motives. To benefit financially.

For sure WE do need to succeed in business.

But…

That does not mean our motivation to help another person, or group of people should be ALL about the money.

I mean, if you still want to get up each day, and feel good about looking yourself in the mirror, there should be more to it.

Brian Tracy, famously said, Successful people, are always looking for opportunities to help others. Unsuccessful people are always asking, “What’s in it for me?”

So, don’t be unsuccessful.

Good day, my friends.

A friend of mine, Nick Warren, has an excellent podcast [Stories Mean Business] that I enjoy immensely.

As of today, he has 860 episodes.

A week or so ago, I started listening to his podcast again starting from the beginning. I'm up to episode 464 again.

Interestingly, in his 370th episode, he touched on something that struck a chord with me.

So, this is the basis of today’s podcast.

Nick mentioned in that episode that he had a business card that had a drawing on the back of it.

He said the drawing was simply a circle with an X located just outside the circle.

He deciphered the image.

The circle represented his comfort zone.

Nick said the X represented the Gold he was seeking.

Translated: the Gold is any highly sought-after thing that appears to be just outside the comfort zone. (ie more customers, optimized website, emails, sales pages, landing pages, increased sales)

While this circle and an X may seem overly simple, in reality, for me, this insight is important.

Let me unpack this for a minute…

So, here we are at the beginning of yet another year.

Have you made a plan?

Are you in control of your future?

For many of you, the answer is going to be no!

I mean, look, here we are on the other side of 2021.

Barely...

We're hardly two weeks into the new year, and here I am asking you if you already have all your ducks in a roll.

Right?

Well, hold on a second...

Actually, I only asked if you have made a plan and if you're in control of your future?

It's OK if the answer is no.

In reality, I would be surprised if it were anything else!

Sure, just last week we talked about these two all-important questions.

Remember?

How far can I go?

And

Is this where I stop?

We ALL know, I cannot expect you in one week, or so, to all of a sudden have everything all figured out, now can I?

It would be great, but unrealistic.

So...

How do you go about getting your life all figured out?

How do you put a business plan in place that will transform your entire life?

EP46: How Far Can I Go?

Have you asked yourself this question?

“How far can I go?”

Isn't that an interesting question?

It was one Dan Sullivan pondered, at age 11, while walking along a field stepping on corn stalks underfoot in northern Ohio, during the 1950s.

I grew up in central Indiana myself. I was born in 1959 and lived there until 1978.

I can remember, what felt like a miserable existence at the time (to me). Jobs there were hard to come by in the small community of Cloverdale Indiana where I lived.

So at the young age of 17, I decided to escape the world I occupied. [How many of you would like to do that from time to time?]

I dared to wonder how far I could go.

So, before turning 19, I enlisted in the US Navy. After scoring high on the ASVAB test the military gave me, to identify skills suitable for military service, I was accepted into a six-year commitment that would train me in Advanced Electronics, and accelerate promotion in the military.

I was told that I could be anything I wanted and pursue any military career, with one exception. I could not enter the Nuclear field. Which was fine for me. REALLY, who needs to glow?

I was excited to start my new life.

Yes, I knew I was leaving behind everything and everyone.

It was exciting and scary at the same time.

I had only lived in Indiana my entire life, with exception of a 6-month short stint in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a kid.

So being transported from Indiana to Illinois, for boot camp and then my first electronics school, was beyond my wildest imagination. Then, later, off to California for another advanced electronics school.

This was the path I chose for myself.

Note: Dan Sullivan was asked at a crucial point in his life a powerful question.

One you may need to consider one day yourself.

He was struggling at doing something that he felt was too difficult. So he sat down, thinking he could not continue.

Here comes the question.

“Is this where you stop?” he was unsure how to answer and said, “What do you mean?” The person replied, “Everybody stops somewhere”.

“Is this where you stop?”

EP45: The New Normal

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2, a pandemic.

The announcement followed a rising sense of alarm in the preceding months over a new, potentially lethal virus that was swiftly spreading around the world.

Over a year and nine months later, we look back on one of the most challenging periods in recent memory.

How has this period of time affected you, your family, your business?

With over 49.8 million COVID cases and over 795,000 deaths in the USA (as of Dec 2021) we assuredly have been affected one way or another.

Where I live, in Florida, there were over 62,000 deaths thus far.

Millions of people have been displaced, lost their jobs, lost family members, and lost their zeal.

But there have been some good to come from this also.

People have been reminded that their health is their responsibility. Like it or not, whether you support vaccinations or not, your life and your families depend on the decisions you make individually.

Many businesses have been forced to increase their wages as millions of people choose to quit their jobs in search of better opportunities.

Employers are learning a long-forgotten lesson. People matter. To have and keep good, hard-working people, their employees must be respected and their hard work acknowledged.

Even many nurses and aides are leaving their positions because they have been overworked and quite frankly they too have been overwhelmed.

Right now, some states are still seeing their hospitals completely overwhelmed. Their capacity to help is limited by the amount of available staff, infrastructure, rooms, ventilators, and the like.

Now, more than ever, many are streaming online to make a better, more dependable life for themselves.

With jobs available, still at low wages, many are choosing to reject them in favor of higher-paying jobs, and others choosing to work for themselves.

No matter how you look at it, our world has changed forever.

I do not think there will be a return to “NORMAL” as many hope.

Instead, there will be a “NEW” normal emerging from the aftermath of this world we all live in.

Will it be better, worse, or similar to the past?

This is yet to be determined.

Here we are, my friends, at the end of December 2021.

How was your year?

Was it the year you envisioned it to be?

Was it better?

Was it worse?

It’s ok.

Your secret is safe with me.

And don’t forget…

It’s not so much a matter of whether you achieved your goals or not; instead, it’s more important that you learned something important and know what to do to make it better.

Truly what more can we expect of ourselves?

Before we know it we will be stepping into 2022 with our eyes wide open, full of possibilities.

Right now…

Right now is the time to start making all your dreams come true.

Oddly enough, if you're wondering how to do that, we must remember that OUR dreams are linked to OUR customer's dreams.

What matters most is your customer's dreams.

They are the ones reading your copy, engaging with your emails, scrolling all-the-way down your web page, and yes, they are the ones that purchase your products.

So why would you concentrate on anything other than them?

You shouldn’t!

So when you’re looking at your copy, emails, and web pages, look with discernment and understanding.

Look at them, through the eyes of your customers (whether money has changed hands or not).

Would YOU keep reading, engaging, scrolling, and purchasing?

Is your information interesting?

Does it REALLY matter to them?

Do they…

Need it?

Want it?

Desire it?

Just have to have it?

Or

Is it just a good read?

Thanks for joining me today.

We all have had questions, from time to time, that deserved to be answered.

Tough questions.

Perplexing questions.

Sometimes impossible questions.

It’s time they get answered.

First off, let’s start with a story…

Not a STORY!!!

YES, a short story.

I can remember back in the day (before time itself) when you could simply go and visit your friends anytime you wanted.

That’s right, I remember just dropping by anytime I wanted and [hey, guess what?] “it was ok”.

Remember, these were my friends.

Best friends.

We liked being around each other, liked mostly the same things, and enjoyed the time we had with each other.

This was the 1980’s.

NOW though…

It doesn’t work that way.

Not at all!

Today…

You probably need to make an appointment or at the least call ahead.

Just dropping by is not even a thing anymore. Too bad too!

Similarly, there was a time when you could call someone, and hey, they would answer.

NOW, you get the answering machine or voicemail.

Websites…

Don’t get me started.

When was the last time you tried calling someone from a phone number on a website, and you talked to a human being?

Right now you may be asking yourself, “what does this have to do with answering my questions?”

The point is this.

It is VERY difficult to get answers to questions you and I have when everyone has stopped being present.

Don’t Call Me!

Don’t Text Me!

Don’t Email Me!

Online, people [solopreneurs] cannot devote ALL their time to answering a phone and dealing with issues and problems. Yes, they still need to be running a business. [not a great excuse, but it's factual]

But back in the 1980s, I really liked being able to drop in and have human interaction whenever I wanted it.

So…

Welcome back, friends.

Good to have you!

Anyone that is in the business of serving others, is always looking for a better, faster, more efficient, process, teaching, training course, or program that will continue helping their customers.

But you most likely know as well as I do, that that “ain’t easy” as they say where I come from.

And keeping up with your competition and the ever-changing internet, sometimes makes you a little bit crazy. Right?

Only you know what your customers want, so I cannot really speak to that.

But when it comes to you needing better ideas or ways of serving them, then I think we can talk.

Actually…

The bulk of my material today comes from me reading the book “The Breakout Principle” by Herbert Benson, M.D. and William Proctor.

My mentor recommended it to me.

So now I’m recommending it to you as well.

This book explains how practically anyone can quickly and easily have creative ideas almost at will.

Obviously, you will have to do something to achieve it, but that’s the point, isn’t it? Nothing is FREE, it all takes time, energy, and hard work.

But if you put in the work, you will see the results.

In fact, almost ALWAYS you already put in the work, but just didn’t know how to get the results you wanted. Right?

You did 80% of the effort, now you need to know how to extract the benefits.

This isn’t from me, this comes straight from medical research over many, many years. It’s ALL in the book.

Have you ever struggled with anything at all?

Trying to solve a puzzle or problem? Looking for a solution with seemingly none in sight.

After considerable time and effort, you give up.

You just throw your hands in the air or pound your fists on a table (or a wall).

Maybe you stomp off into another room to pout. After all, we are just grown-up kids most of the time. Right?

Later that day, or possibly the next, and sometimes in a dream, you have an idea!

Your solution just came to you out of nowhere. Out of thin air, an idea popped into your mind.

You’re excited. Even elated!

Then you wonder to yourself…

…how did that happen?

And even more so…

…can I do it again?

Welcome back, friends.

Remember when your dream was just your dream?

When you could just sit back, close your eyes, and feel how good it felt to be all you could be.

You could feel like your dream was so close to you you could both reach out and touch it and taste it at the same time.

What happened to those dreams?

Do you still have them?

Do they still feel real?

Or

Did they fade away slowly, and now they are a distant memory?

I hope not.

Last year and this year has been hard on a lot of people.

Maybe you became affected more than you care to admit.

If not … good!

But if you seem to have lost your vision, your drive, your motivation, let’s see what can help get it back.

We all suffer setbacks from time to time.

There is no reason to let it derail all your dreams.

Last week we talked about “dreamers dream doers do”.

There, we discussed that having dreams is good and gives us a reason to do things.

It is the DOING that really takes your dreams and transforms them into reality.

I told you that dreams are just the starting point.

Doing SOMETHING makes your dreams come to life and start taking shape.

The more you and I do, the more our dreams transform from just those ideas we had and become the driving force that creates a future we can be proud of.

Even in this COVID-19 world we live in, right now, we can still achieve great and awesome things, when we step outside our comfort zones.

If you’re still working a 9-5 job, you may feel like you can never give that up and start doing your own thing.

I understand completely.

Last week we talked about strategic decision making.

I did the talking and you listened.

But…

Today, I want you to do more than just listen.

Listening is the easy part.

It is my hope you will take something out of the message today.

I hope that it transforms, not only your thinking, but also your way of communicating with your readers, customers, prospects, and friends. This is important.

Let me ask you a question!

When you are in a conversation with someone whether you know them or not, which do you prefer, to be talked to, or a two-way dialogue with this person?

When communicating with our lists (our people) via email or through a blog post, landing page, or even a sales page, we should want our information [our written words] to communicate in a way that promotes a conversation in the mind of the reader.

The reader must take the information they are reading in, and it should be immediately meaningful.

You want to almost hear them thinking, “yeah, I know exactly what you mean”.

“That is how I feel too.”

“I have been struggling with that as well!”

“I really wish I could fix that”.

“I need to know more”.

Yes, we must grab their attention and motivate them to want to keep reading, keep learning, and keep absorbing the information.

We should never want to alienate them, speak down to them, or belittle them in any way.

We should speak to them as if they were our best friend. As if the information you are sharing with them is vital to their well-being, their safety, their understanding, their business.

You made it back for another impactful podcast.

Glad to have you.

Last week I mentioned that I am playing the long game.

Specifically, how I want to do business is not and never has been about getting immediate results.

Weird, right?

Maybe…

Maybe not…

In a typical business [whether online or offline], to get immediate results, you have to get people to respond immediately (or sooner), like right now.

This may involve the use of FAKE scarcity, or time-limited promotions, and a lot of times, the use of both.

I don’t like FAKE scarcity.

We see it all the time … buy this thing [insert your thing] … TODAY … right now … at this very low, never to be seen or heard of price … ever again.

And/Or

If you close this page “this offer will no longer be available”. If you do come back later, all you will see is the normal price of “X-Dollars” [much more than most everyone is willing to pay].

It drives me bat-shit-crazy.

Fake scarcity has only one intention – ONE – to get a quick sale.

That is because the marketers – do not have a relationship with the reader, customer, subscriber, and are afraid that if the person does not purchase, immediately, they will never buy.

This is inferior, old-school marketing, that needs to go away.

My opinion!

And if it is YOUR way of marketing and you can get it to work for you, then I’m OK with that.

I just KNOW that there is a better way!

Wow, would you believe it, we’ve been doing this podcast for 9 months already?

I want to thank each one of you, so much, for coming back week in and week out.

I strive to do my best to bring you NEW and interesting material that will keep you working hard at your craft.

Each week it seems like I’m climbing another mountain, and beyond this one is another one even taller.

It’s daunting and good at the same time.

Each week I sit down and let the topic come to me.

But, for the last few weeks, I’ll pick a topic early in the week, usually right after finishing the podcast recording.

And then, consistently I’ll change it up.

And I think it happens this way because I have been going over sooooo much information in the last few weeks.

I’m going through the “Art of Email” workshop, I completed an Origin Story course by Nick Warren, and I’m constantly refining my website.

So I have so much going through my mind at one time, that I think my subconscious is in overdrive.

So for today's podcast, we are going to be talking about the Bridge email.

You might be saying, “But we already discussed the Bridge Email before”. And you would be correct.

The last time I talked about the Bridge email was during Episode 13. Nearly 23 weeks ago.

I think it is a topic on my mind right now, is because it is a BIG deal in the Art of Email.

I’m looking at the text of episode 13 and it had over 2000 words and ended up being about 15 minutes long.

I don’t have nearly that long this time.

So I am going to be concentrating on what has simply blown me away this last week or so and I hope you appreciate it even more too.

Ok, so you know what your customers want. And you’re ready to get it to them.

But what do you do?

Really?

How do you get from what is in your head, to what is in their hands or in their inbox for digital products?

What are the practical steps you will want to do, to achieve your goals?

Ok…

Let’s break it down.

You need to let them know there is something new, something that you created that solves one of their problems.

If you already have a list of people that are already reading your emails or newsletters, great!

More than great, it is perfect.

During your nurture emails or regularly scheduled newsletter, you would want to mention the problem your product solves.

Whatever you do, don’t just start being one of those OTHER marketers we all have to deal with when they just send us emails out of the blue for a product we did not ask about, or even care for.

Thanks again for joining me today.

We must admit, we are living in exciting times.

We have at our grasp more information today than anyone could have imagined possible when I was growing up in the 60’s, 70’s, and the 80’s.

I keep giving away my age!

And I do that to show you, that no matter how old you are, or how young you are, age is not a factor. Marketing online is for everyone, young and old.

Now back to the subject of information.

In particular vast amounts of information.

In a study conducted by researchers at the University of California-San Diego, it is believed that people every day are inundated with the equivalent amount of 34 Gb of information. Enough to overload a laptop in a week.

That study was conducted a few years ago as well, so we know that means we now are exposed to much more information today.

People receive every day about over 105,000 words or 23 words per second during a 12 hour period. All being delivered via email, TV, radio, newspapers, books, social media, etc.

Even though people cannot read all that information each day, our sophisticated brains do receive it from our eyes and ears.

So, you may be wondering, how much information can our brains hold? 

And, will it ever get full?

I am pretty sure every person listening to this podcast or reading the blog post it will be attached to, has had a moment of clarity when they stopped what they were doing and seriously considered whether their business was worth it.

In other words, is the business doing what it was built to do?

Does it help the people that you're trying to help?

Does it inspire others to accomplish their goals?

Is it paying for itself?

In other words, does the business make money and can it sustain itself, or are you having to keep working a day J. O. B. to keep the businesses bills paid?

You know, the email service provider, your website hosting, your internet connection, and all the other support services that keep you doing what you do.

Not sure about you, but I did quit on my business a long time ago. I just felt like I was spinning my wheels, and nothing was working for me.

You might know that feeling.

Let's talk business.

We all understand what an offline business looks and feels like.

They are all around us.

Starbucks, Lowes, Home Depot, Chipotle, McDonald's, Wendy's, and the list could just keep on going.

We grew up with them and we're comfortable using them to get what we want.

Business Costs

However, the cost of doing business offline is vastly different than doing business online.

Renting a storefront is a major expense.

You need electrical and internet services as well.

Another huge expense is advertising.

Then there are office expenses and those pesky employees like getting paid as well.

And don't forget about your business license and insurance.

Those are just some of the offline business expenses.

Now, on the other hand, you could be online within a few days with a simple domain and website, an autoresponder (email service provider), and a product or service you developed yourself or one you sell as an affiliate.

As a simple and lean online business, you should easily see that there is a huge difference between that and any offline business with its costs.

And besides, going online to start any business is perfect right now because...

The World is Changing

Very quickly too.

Now, more people, though not all, are beginning to become comfortable purchasing things online. Especially in these last few years, where going out to buy things was very much limited because of all the quarantines.

We’re continuing with this theme of what does it take to be a marketer online.

As a short recap, last week I revealed that not all is as it appears to be online.

Sometimes people fib a little when they encourage people to purchase their products.

They forget to let people know marketing online is difficult and no one product will be the end-all answer to building a successful online business.

I get it.

It’s hard to know who to trust, right?

Especially when big-name gurus who should know better fail to be completely transparent in their marketing.

A lot of people are selling the belief that marketing is “easy” when that could not be further from the truth.

I know exactly what that feels like.

Especially after spending money on a course or product, hoping that it will solve a problem, it instead introduces even more problems.

Over the last few days, one of my mentors André Chaperon of TinyLittleBusinesses.com. André emailed out a parable that spoke to my heart.

I want to read it to you as written.

Be forewarned, it is powerful, full of illustrations and enormous bits of online truth.

I hope it finds a place in your thoughts as you pursue your marketing dream.

At some point, we need to decide to take our future into our own hands.

After all, it is our business.

It's your business.

Learning how to climb internet mountains IS what I’m here to help you do.

If it were a brick-and-mortar business, you wouldn't just run around purchasing products without doing some research and maybe getting referrals or testimonials.

As online marketers, we have to keep upping our game, which involves continuing education.

My wife is a Real Estate agent, and she has to take courses every year to keep her license active.

Thankfully we do not have that regulation.

Still, unless you're willing to keep learning your craft, and marketing is a craft, you will always fall behind.

On this podcast, I do not charge for my advice. You can take what I say with a grain of salt.

But after many years living through the heartache, like many of you have suffered through, or are suffering through, my advice comes from a place of wisdom.

I can still remember when I found my mentor and how his knowledge changed how I looked at online marketing. He took off my blinders and showed me how to truly be a marketer.

This podcast is my way of sharing that knowledge with all of you.

I didn’t mean to be so long-winded today, but I could not help myself.

Yeah I know, if I've said it once I've said it a thousand times.

“Most of the online marketing information shared by the Gurus is designed to confuse you, the naive buyer into purchasing their products.”

If you knew the truth, you would not purchase their products. Their products will not EDUCATE you and provide the continuing education you really need.

There is a reason why lawyers go to college to learn their craft. And why there are laws that only allow a person that has a diploma and passed the Bar Exam to practice Law.

Anyone that has been represented by a lawyer appreciates knowing they are educated and not someone that just took a few classes online.

Their life, business, and family may be at risk if their choice of a lawyer was a mistake.

So, I must ask you, why do we all think anyone can just waltz in, throw up a website and start practicing the craft of marketing WITHOUT first becoming educated?

I don't want to sound like a hardass, and I know it could easily sound that way, but I have seen too many people get hurt by marketers who take advantage of unwary customers who just wanted a piece of the dream.

Online marketing is a business.

Big Business!!

Now even more than ever.

But it is deceiving.

It's easy to go online and look at a website and think, “I can do that”.

“I can replicate what they have. Replicate their tripwire product and squeeze page. Replicate their sales page and product.”

“I can even replicate their emails too.”

Yes...

Yes, you can.

You definitely could replicate all those things, and most likely still fail in the process.

Welcome back, friends.

You may have noticed that I have been changing things on the Podcast recently.

I still may not be done.

And it has nothing to do with my mission to help others with online marketing.

Recently I started working on creating a course to help people even further.

I wanted to create a “FREE” Beginners Marketer course so anyone interested in learning how to market online could do just that.

They would have a resource where they could find the absolute truth about online marketing and obtain a basic understanding of how they could make money from home with the least amount of effort.

Now I did NOT say without doing work.

Work is always involved.

What I mean is this.

The effort normally involved in chasing down all the answers to their questions, and finding the truth about marketing will be virtually eliminated.

You would not believe how many times I have purchased courses and products that were supposed to be the way for me to make money online but ended up making me scratch my head more often than not.

I am going to do my best to put together a “FREE” course that provides the training I only wish I had had back in the day.

Training that would help someone start making money in 30-60 days if they do the work required.

Were talking about building something that could safely bring in a few hundred dollars extra each month, in the beginning.

Something that lets a beginner get their feet wet and not lose their shirt doing it.

I want something that is going to be simple to implement.

Let’s say it will be a rough draft.

But it will get the job done.

By the way, I am still working on that course. 

So it is not available at this time.

Another website I own is where I will be hosting this “FREE” Beginner Marketer course.

I am hoping to have the “FREE” Beginner Marketer course available before the end of this year.

So, back to the initial topic, all the changes to the PODCAST.

The changes are being made to make the podcast generic, not branded to Mkt2online or the other website, so it can serve both without confusing anyone.

What is important to know, is that the same great content you have come to expect will continue.

I will be changing the length of the podcast and its posting cycle to make it more appealing.

So I will reduce the podcast to less than 10 minutes in length.

This will force me to get to the point of the discussion quickly so you can get on with your day.

I believe that if the information is simple and easy to take in and easy to implement then everyone wins.

We live in a world of short attention spans.

If you want to capture attention, you need a message that delivers, every single minute.

As soon as you lose people's attention, your audience will be gone. Hasta la Vista Baby!

And that is not what I want.

And neither do you.

So, starting next week, look for short, efficient, and to-the-point podcasts moving forward.

Welcome back friends!

I was thinking the other day why more people are not marketing online in some form or fashion.

I get it that there’s the learning curve that needs to take place, let alone the fact that people have been LIED to for the last couple of decades into thinking being online is easy.

The concept of online seems easy, but the reality of everything that needs to be done to accomplish a person's goals is anything but.

No, I understand those roadblocks.

Those I can help people with.

There is another issue that I don’t think we look at very often.

There is this issue of “Looking Weird” in front of our friends, relatives, co-workers, and the like.

Let alone, having to wonder what our friends on social media will think of us.

As human beings we are fragile.

We try our best to stand tall and appear to be an adult and all, but really, inside we are still children sometimes. At least it appears to look that way.

Not young children, heck no, they don’t care what people think. They are still discovering the world and everything is interesting to them.

They cannot wait to do everything.

No, I’m talking about someone a bit older.

Maybe it’s just me, but I remember being afraid to stand out in school.

Middle school and the beginning of High School scared the crap out of me.

I was different.

I thought differently about things.

I looked at the world with a different slant than my peers and family did.

Because of that, I did not communicate with them too much.

I kept to myself A LOT.

That affected how I communicated with the world for a long time.

Know what I mean?

Then I just dug in and tried to do the best I could to “hopefully” provide you all with some new information, and to remind you of other highly important skills.

Welcome back, my friends.

We are at Episode 15.

Almost 4 months of new content brought to you for one reason.

I care.

I understand the struggle we all succumb to and the frustration of trying our best to make what should be simple work.

Copywriting is one of those difficult subjects. I hope to do right by you in covering this huge topic.

To cover the entire contents of the subject “copywriting” would normally take a lot of time and space.

And for a podcast with only 4 episodes to devote to the subject of copywriting the material must be limited to the most crucial and only what will serve a new marketer wanting to succeed quickly.

Therefore I am instead going to devote 6 episodes to this subject. When confronted with the enormous amount of information to cover, it was easy to see that 4 episodes would be just the icing on the cake.

Even 6 episodes could never cover all a marketer should know.

This is why I will from time to time have individual “pop up” episodes on targeted copywriting topics. Sort of like refresher training, so to speak.

This is me, trying to help you, the best way possible.

Will it be perfect?

No!

But I am sure it will be a huge help to those that really need it.

With that in mind, let’s begin.

Welcome back and congratulations. We have made it to the end of the Email Series.

I hope you enjoyed it and are implementing some of its best practices.

Of course, we will have other Podcasts about other aspects of email and marketing, but this is the end of this initial series.

Whew, it has been both fun and difficult.

Fun because I love trying to help others learn better ways to market effectively online.

It has been difficult because training via a podcast can at times be less than ideal.

So now let’s talk about the final component of the series, the Promotional Emails.

We won’t be spending a lot of time on this episode, as we did on the “Bridge Email” because ALL the heavy lifting took place in the previous emails.

In the Relationship Building emails, you nurtured your readers and introduced, through story-telling some problems that your prospects may have had and you should have hinted that there could be a solution.

In the Bridge email, you stated definitively that there was a solution to one of your readers' problems and you asked them to raise their hand if they were interested in learning about it.

This naturally brings us to the Promotional emails.
