I have entitled this sermon “The TRUE Sinner's Prayer” because what we are taught here is that a true prayer for salvation is God-centered and is characterized by humility, brokenness over sin, and absolute dependence upon the mercy of God. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus is one of Luke's most well-known parables. If you recall, the context of this chapter in Luke is dealing principally with the Pharisees' love of money. They were given over to idolatry of riches and they continually set aside the law of God whenever it suited their selfish desires. So Jesus gave this parable to destroy their assumption that wealth corresponded to God's favor and to warn them that judgment and agony in hell was coming. The human heart is an amazing and vital organ. The human body thrives because of the blood that the heart pumps at over 2,000 gallons daily. The heart still has its flaws as heart disease is still the number one killer in the world. The spiritual heart described in the Old Testament refers to the inner core of a person- the thoughts, feelings, desires, will, and choices that make that person who he/she is. Because those things can be shaped by the world and our experiences, Jeremiah teaches us here that the heart is not to be trusted because it is incurably wicked; rather, Trust the Lord. For the believer, Thanksgiving is not just a holiday or a special occasion, it is a way of life. The parable of the great banquet is one of the more tragic parables of Christ. Why? Scripture: Acts 4:1-13 After Peter heals the lame beggar, He preaches the gospel in front of the religious elite. The leaders of the day perceived that Peter was a common man, yet he had been with Jesus. How do people view us? Do they see that we have been with Jesus?

When Jesus came the first time, He came with the full power and authority of the godhead to undo the curse of sin wherever He went as a demonstration of His divinity and glory. As we consider here in Luke 7:1-17 the stories of the faithful Centurion and the Resurrection of the widow of Nain's son, we see how Christ's Authority Emboldens Our Faith, and how Christ's Compassion Evokes His Glory. 

As we consider the whole of chapter 6, which is Luke's account of the sermon on the plain, we see that the standard of conduct and righteousness He sets before us here is truly beyond our ability. Yet Christ does not give us this revelation to further our hopelessness. He is the one preaching these truths, He is the one offering us life, and He Himself is the one way of salvation. Therefore, He concludes His sermon by stating that He is to be the rock upon which our lives are built.

Jesus was a master of agricultural metaphors. His illustrations and parables were simple, yet powerful, and this is yet another that cuts right to the heart of the matter. We can profess to have faith and make ourselves outwardly appear very religious, but it is those who bear out the righteous fruit of faith who prove that they are true disciples of Christ. Jesus takes the things that no one wants – poverty, hunger, sorrow, and persecution – and tells us that these are the very things that God blesses. Then He says that everything the world wants – money, food, entertainment, and popularity – are exactly the things that bring woe and regret. In this sermon, we explore the first three.
