In this brilliant episode I chat with Baz Moffat, a London based PT and Dr Bella Smith, AKA The Digital GP, who are working together to forge a path to inspire and educate women on all matters around the menopause.
We talk about the facts around peri-menopause and menopause, the different options for helping minimise symptoms and what the change in hormones means to our adaptations with exercise.
Baz and Bella are so knowledgeable, so passionate and brilliantly informative on all things hormonal in this crucial phase of life. If all women go through the menopause and will probably spend longer on the other side of menopause than in all the years from cycles starting to menopause then we all owe it to ourselves, our families and friends to gain more knowledge and appreciation for how effective and awesome we can be.

Emma is really passionate about her work, talks regularly to women and girls ranging from high school students to elite level athletes and their coaches and wants to get across how important this is for all of us. Episode 58 - Neema Sempebwa - "Motherhood without Your Mum, Body Image and Tiredness"
In this episode I wanted to acknowledge the role our mothers play in our own journey as a mother, particularly for those without their Mum still around. There is so much celebration and joy, exactly as it should be, for Mothers on Mothers Day and so today I wanted to recognise those who have a gaping hole in their lives through Mothers they are missing. Episode 54 - Dr Angela White AKA The Running Granny
In this week’s episode I had the great pleasure of a long chat with Dr Angela White, a woman who has a lifetime of experience in her work as an orthopaedic surgeon in the NHS, a data analyst and health communication in recent years. She also has a lifetime of experience as a person who didn’t move much, came to a tricky time in life with her teenage children, an overload of work, ill husband and relatives and a realisation that she was unfit and inactive knowing exactly where that would lead in the end. So she decided to make small changes to her life over a number of years to improve how she felt and realised this was something that needed to be talked about more especially in the older populations.
We discuss those small changes, how change doesn’t need to be complex or massive life shifts, how preparation for a healthy older life starts in our 20s and 30s and Angela’s mission to provide a platform of information and advice to those growing old in a healthy body. Oh and she holds the record for the oldest woman to run from John O’Groats to Lands End (18 days and a bit!) so we chat about that.

Welcome to everyone joining me for series 4 and our 51st episode - I’m so happy to still be chatting with amazing, inspiring women and I hope you are still inspired to get out on your own everyday adventures no matter what they are. On to this week’s guest, it’s the turn of Ella Foote to chat to me all about open water swimming, dipping every day in December, her own mental health struggles and having motherhood thrust upon her when she met her partner last year and became a step-Mum overnight. She talks very honestly about how it feels to go from zero to 100mph in the parenting zone and how that has challenged and shaped her. We also talk lots about open water swimming and cold water swimming, what it means to her and why she found this niche.
You can find out about Ella’s company Dip Advisor here: https://thedipadvisor.co.uk/#swims

Episode 50 - Tori James “Climbing Everest, Beeline Britain and many other adventures"
This week I chatted to Tori James who has led a life filled with adventure and many more to come I’m sure. After being inducted in the adventure world when working at the Royal Geographical Society, Tori became the youngest woman (at the time) and the first Welsh woman to climb Everest in 2007.
There was so much to cover in our conversation with 4 major expeditions in her life which were all so interesting to hear about and to understand the lessons she took from each one. It was then great to hear her take on the change in life from the pre-kids to post and how she is adapting her life around her young son.
You can find out more about Tori here: http://www.torijames.com

In this week’s episode I chatted to Amy Abrahams, freelance writer for online and print media such as The Sunday Times Style, The Pool, Stylist, Glamour, Women's Health and many more and in February 2018, she won the Best Health Journalist award at the Wellness Awards.
I love Amy’s open and honest writing and conversations, always interesting and fun with a great dose of feminism, body positivity and a great understanding of the complexities of the various issues we talk about.
We talk in this conversation about the responsibility of women’s magazines around diversity and body positivity/neutrality, how Amy has felt going through her pregnancy and post-natally and pre-kids, how running changed her life.

Episode 48 - Kelly Pietrangeli “Create your own Project Me"
This week I had the pleasure of talking to Kelly P from Project Me about her work as the queen of encouraging us to project manage ourselves through small habit creation, looking back each month and checking in with what’s going on in our lives and writing stuff out in order to see what is and isn’t going on in our lives. In other words, the idea of doing our lives with more control rather than life just being done to us.
At this time of year (published December 2019) it’s pretty crucial to keep thinking of how to keep within overwhelm limits and take time to recognise what’s going on before we start the passive aggressive “communication” with our partners.
If you’d like to connect with Kelly on instagram that’s here: https://www.instagram.com/kellyprojectme/

Episode 47 - Annie Broadbent “The Dark Side of the Mum"
In this episode I spoke with Annie Broadbent who is a psychosynthesis therapist and the author of the book “Speaking of Death” and now the founder of a platform intended to support mothers who are finding the conversation around motherhood all too positive and sugar coated and who don’t identify the insta-perfect image with their own experience.
Whilst this isn’t directly related to movement, my own experience of mental health challenges post 2nd baby meant I had a skewed relationship with my body, my sense of worth and my motivation, and I found that my mental stability directly related to how and why I moved.

Episode 42 - Jessica Hepburn Part 1 - Fertility and Infertility Awareness, the meaning of motherhood
This week is National Fertility Awareness week in the UK and in recognition of that I wanted to put out this double episode of a long conversation I had with Jessica Hepburn. Jessica Hepburn is the author of 2 books: The Pursuit of Motherhood and 21 Miles: Swimming in Search of the Meaning of Motherhood. Jessica is also the founder, in 2016, of Fertility Fest, the world's first arts festival dedicated to fertility, infertility, modern families and the science of making babies, having previously held the role of Executive Director at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith.
Jessica is an extraordinary woman for many reasons, she went through 11 rounds of ultimately unsuccessful IVF over 9 years and then decided to swim the English Channel and is now training to make an attempt to climb Everest. Jessica’s book “21 Miles” made me realise that we need to have a broader conversation of what motherhood means and that I want to be part of a more responsible, diverse and inclusive message.

In week 3 of the series I’ll be speaking to Grainne Donnelly of Absolute Physio about returning to running and next week I’ll be speaking to Sophia Copper of One Fit Mama, but up first:

Episode 35 - Life lessons from Ocean Rowing with Sally Kettle
In the 3rd episode of this "Women in the Water" mini series I am chatting to Sally Kettle who is the first woman to row the Atlantic Ocean twice from East to West. Ultimately this is a conversation not just about how awesome Sally is - although she undoubtedly is - but actually how traumatic situations can help us grow, the lessons we can learn from failing, how sometimes we do totally the wrong thing and why it’s OK to talk about it so it doesn’t chew us up inside. Sally is clearly highly self motivated with a great sense of humour and has learnt a lot from her experiences so it was great to hear her stories and receive some of that experience.
Do enjoy this episode and the other two in the series, and please come back and let me know with a review on your podcast platform - if you review it I will give you a shout out and thanks on the next episode. I always love hearing feedback and any comments.

As part 2 of this Women in the Water series I am talking to Sally McGee from Surf Yonder, a surf school based in Northumberland who is on a mission to encourage women to get in the water, learn to surf with support and confidence and to improve their surfing beyond riding the white water on the beach. Sally has a 17 month old baby and left her teaching job when she had him as she couldn’t work out the childcare costs and earning, she now also works closely with her husband who is a photographer and formed a work life that fulfils her in many ways.
In this chat I think you can hear how passionate Sally is about her sport and how understanding she is about the challenges women have in surfing to men. Episode 33 - SUP and Lifestyle Medicine - Women in the Water with Dr Georgie Sowman
This is episode is the first of the mini series bringing together some women talking about being in water, what it means to them, how it brings their families together and the challenges they have faced.
I wanted to hear more about different aspects of what the connection of water means to each woman, their passions and what they’ve learnt.
This week I chatted to Dr Georgie Sowman, a GP specialising in Lifestyle Medicine based in Northumberland, Mum to 3 kids and a Stand-Up Paddleboard coach and mega-enthusiast! We cover various parts of the wonder of spending time in water, bringing her kids in to find their own path, the balance of risk and reward, the potential of prescribing connecting with water for mental health while also hearing about how Georgie got into SUP and how she works it into her life.
Do let me know what you think of the episode, I’d love to hear you feedback and connect with you on this mini series - what do you love about being on or in water, or do you shy away from experiences in water for any reason and do you find any barriers to your enjoyment of water? Let me know over on Instagram: @motherofallmovement
Please rate, review and share this episode with anyone who might love to hear more.

Episode 32: "Women deserved better than the outdoor clothing on offer” with Alex Feechan, Findra
This week I spoke to Alex Feechan, CEO and Founder of Findra an outdoor clothing company based in Scotland. Originally a knitwear designer with a love of mountain biking, Alex realised the clothing on offer to female mountain bikers was woefully inadequate and insulting, the “pink it and shrink it” method just didn’t cut it. So Alex decided to do something about it and designed her own range of merino clothing which was flattering, functional and not pink!
This is the 3rd episode in the mini series exploring the barriers clothing options may cause to women taking part in sport, exercise or movement choices. Do listen in to all 3 to hear more from different entrepreneurs who are changing the way we are served by companies making clothes for women.
You can find more about Findra here: https://findraclothing.com
Alex mentions being inspired by Anita Roddick: https://theroddickfoundation.org

I look forward to hearing from you!

Episode 31 - “Giving Women Real Support” with Yvonne Brady, EVB Sport
Carrying on from the last week’s episode in this mini series discussing the clothing options available to women taking part in sport and the barriers women may face due to clothing, I am chatting this week to Yvonne Brady who is the Founder of EVB Sport, a company that makes support shorts and leggings to help women who may be experiencing symptoms of incontinence, pelvic floor weakness, and prolapse. This was born out of Yvonne’s personal experience with pelvic floor dysfunction following the birth of her 3rd baby and her decision to start running pretty soon after.
As with Rosie Cook in last week’s episode and Alex Feechan in next week’s episode, here is another example of a woman seeing a problem that only women face, seeing that there aren’t any good options out there for helping solve this and going out and doing something about it.
This is an interesting alternative perspective, I hope you’ll find really relevant to the discussion around women’s participation in all types of movement. If we’re ashamed of our bodies because we perceive they have let us down because we haven’t heard an open discussion about it, then I believe that contributes to women stopping getting involved or continuing participation in sport. As Yvonne says in this chat, it’s not a body failure, it’s just mechanics, let’s get the support, both physically and mentally to get stronger and we’ll be unstoppable!

Episode 30 - Making Better Clothing Options for Women with Rosie Cook from Deakin & Blue
In this mini series I am exploring the ways clothing can be a barrier to women taking part in or enjoying sport either through body image or comfort.
In this first week’s episode I am joined by Rosie Cook, CEO and founder of Deakin & Blue which makes “transformational swimwear” - both functional and beautiful swimwear that works for every body shape. Rosie has been a big part of the body neutral campaign, helping open the conversation on what we are marketed and by whom and asking for more from the companies selling active clothing to women.
I hope you’ll enjoy this conversation not only if you’re a swimmer but if you’re questioning the clothing choices that are available to you in general and how a brand like Deakin & Blue is standing up to make change in the industry.
Rosie is a brilliant example of a women leading by the change she wanted to make in the world, a women who saw a problem that women had and went out to solve it herself.

Episode 28 - Giving girls a voice through football with Goals 4 Girls, Francesca Brown
In this episode which is part 2 of the mini series looking at how we can inspire young girls to grow into women who choose to participate in sport and activity, I talk to Francesca Brown. She is CEO of Goals 4 Girls, and is a Prince’s Trust award winner and ambassador and won a Pride of Britain award, plus she was listed in the Sunday Times “alternative rich list” for 2017 and her organisation has won many other awards since it’s inception in 2011.

Episode 27 - Inspiring girls to move with Mini Mermaids’ Hannah Corne
Here is the first episode of this mini series looking at how we can inspire girls and young women to move and appreciate movement regardless of their shape, ability or background.
Hannah Corne is the Executive Director of the UK branch of the Mini Mermaids running club.
In this episode we talk about Hannah’s own experience of the misuse of language that affected her at a young age, her daughters challenges with communication and why she found and brought the Mini Mermaids programme over from the States.
I found the idea of the programme profoundly transformative for those vulnerable girls and boys who may otherwise have never experienced a love of movement and what other character strengths that can provide.

Episode 25 - Laura Tye Purkiss - the balance of mother and dancer
This week I’m delighted to welcome the incredible Laura Purkiss who is a soloist with the Birmingham Royal Ballet and also a Mum to 2 little girls. She is the subject of a beautiful new short film called Balancé which is out on Amazon video now showing her life and the balance she is trying to strike between being a Mother and being a professional dancer.
In this chat we talk about the tough life of a dancer, how unrelenting a profession it is and how she’s trying to establish a pathway out of that life. She also talks candidly about her physical recovery from the birth of her two children and how much she gives up to be the dancer and Mother she wants to be.
I’d also really appreciate a rating or review on Apple Podcasts or iTunes or wherever you listen.

Episode 24 - Sophie Power - Balancing motherhood with our own needs, and “that” ultra trail photo.
In this week’s episode I’m really happy to be talking to the lovely and totally inspiring ultra runner and multi-sector businesswoman, Sophie Power. Sophie has become something of a poster girl for breastfeeding athletes everywhere after a photo was released of her breastfeeding her 3 month old baby and pumping at the same time at one of the aid stations during the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc. It provoked a huge conversation about female athletes wanting to provide for their kids and fulfil their needs as well and why there wasn’t more support for women and what could be done by the sport and others to make an image like this less of a spectacle.

Episode 22 - Yorkshire Rows Part 2

Episode 21 - Yorkshire Rows Part 1
I’m super happy to round off this 2nd season of the podcast with a brilliant double episode with the women from “Yorkshire Rows” - Helen Butters, Frances Davies, Janette Benaddi, Niki Doeg - a team of formidable working mums who “dared to dream”.
In rowing the Atlantic and setting a world record for the oldest women to row any ocean they set out to put more challenge and adventure in their own lives and make some incredible and unique memories to look back on, but at the same time they knew that by challenging themselves with this particular adventure they would inspire women and men from all over to find their own ocean and dare to dream too.
I think you can hear from the interview how lovely and down to earth these women are but also how brilliant they are at understating their own achievements. I hope you enjoy hearing us talk in this first part about how they got to the start line, what it took to say yes to the idea, come up with the money and who they met along the way.
The two books Frances and Helen mention they read before leaving:

Episode 16 - "Family Teamwork got me to the North Pole" with Misba Khan
.
The wider mission was to inspire all women to reach beyond the expectation of others and fulfil their own life ambitions.
.
Misba has certainly embodied those mission points, having been the oldest woman on the trip, the only Grandmother and a relative novice when it came to skiing and setting up camp and ended up leading the group on some days, feeding her tent mates each day and becoming the first British Muslim woman to reach the North Pole, plus since she’s returned she has spoken to many, many school children inspiring them and igniting a spark of adventure to those who may think this isn’t within their reach.
.
Take a listen to hear us talking about how teamwork amongst her family was crucial to her being able to take a step out of daily life, what she got from rambling and loving the outdoors.
.
