Ep 3: Poet, Land Nurterer, & Language Carrier Sunnie Smith-Ishtimonabi' (Black Chickasaw)

Ep 3: Poet, Land Nurterer, & Language Carrier Sunnie Smith-Ishtimonabi' (Black Chickasaw)

Finally back this week after a hectic, chaotic family emergency the past couple weeks! Thank you so sincerely for your patience for the podcast. I'm so excited that Sunnie, a self described book worm, was able to join us! Sunnie is a Black Chickasaw poet, land nurturer, and language learner/carrier. We had such a fun conversation gushing over books like Toni Morrison, Louise Erdrich, romance, and all kinds of book suggestions under the sun. My favorite was our conversation about language revitalization and how it is such a deeply emotional process.  Some notes & corrections for the episode:  -Sunnie remembered the book they forgot the title of: The translation of Dr. Apelles by David Treue -Akweke is South Asian (correct from saying South East Asian)  Follow Sunnie: https://www.instagram.com/sunnie_with_a_chance_of_moody/?hl=en Cover Art Illustration: https://www.instagram.com/poyomi/?hl=en Music: https://twitter.com/TheRomanEra

Ep. 2: Shop Updates & Author Ursula Pike (Karuk)

Ep. 2: Shop Updates & Author Ursula Pike (Karuk)

Hamiintamc! I wanted to first and foremost express my gratitude for your immense support for the podcast! I was sincerely not expecting how much love and interest there would be, I thought it was a good idea, but you all convinced me this is a really great way to connect with so many people over our love for books! I also provided some shop updates with our next pop-ups and things we are doing on social media! But then we really get into the exciting part of the show which is an interview with author Ursula Pike, author of "An Indian Among Los Indígenas: A Native Travel Memoir". Ursula is from the Karuk tribe in Northern California and lives in Austin, Texas where she continues to write on travel, powwows, economics, and Native issues. We had such an amazing conversation about all the complexities of her book from love interests abroad to her process during school and after to get published! Hakup a'ai for listening and can't wait to work on releasing the next episode! EP. 1: Introduction & Hillary from Black Walnut Books

EP. 1: Introduction & Hillary from Black Walnut Books

Hamiintamc! I am so excited to finally be sharing this podcast idea with you all and to get to publish my first interview! Welcome to NDN Book Nerd, a podcast dedicated to interviewing those in the book industry and field from an Indigenous lens. I hope to sit down with authors, bookstore owners, publishers, book clubs, bookstagrammers, and more to talk alllll about books! I will be mostly focusing on Native creators and book people, but also hope to forge connections outside of just Native communities with others.  In this first interview I am so grateful to have gotten to interview Hillary from Black Walnut Books and finally talk face to face over video chat! Hillary is Southern Pomo and Coastal Miwok and is a member of the Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians. She is the founder of Black Walnut Books, which started in 2021 and stocks and shares books with an anti-racist, Native, and Queer focus. Her pop-up store is located in New York and she sells online as well!  I was so excited to see our similarities in our pop-up store and to compare to Hillary's years of experience in bookselling prior to opening her shop vs. my minimal book experience. We had such a great discussion and I was so happy to hear her adorable cat in the background. Check out the links below to follow Hillary and learn more about the creators who helped make the podcast come to life!
