What It Means to be Adopted into God's Family (Christ-Haunted People Pt. 4) // Trey Hayman // Romans 8:12-17
What does it mean to be adopted into God's family?
Romans 8 talks about being given the spirit of adoption. What does that mean?
In this message, we talk about identity and how we relate to God. We talk about the difference it makes when you become part of God's family.
We focus in on whether we define ourselves by our sin or by what God has done for us.
A big question for this message is - If you follow Jesus, do you consider yourself primarily a sinner saved by grace or a saint who still sins?
Romans 8:12-17 (NLT)12 Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. 13 For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” 16 For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. 17 And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

We will also have a couple interviews later in the season with individuals who have experience following the way of Jesus while dealing with mental health issues. It might not be what you think.

The Battle in Your Mind (A Christ-Haunted People Pt. 2) // Trey Hayman // Romans 7:14-8:2
Your view of God affects how you see the world. It affects how you experience the world and even how you see yourself and others.
In this message, we dive into a few questions: Was Jesus Religious?
Is it possible to be spiritual but not religious?
What is a religion anyways?
We talk about the struggle of doing what you don't want to do and not doing what you want to do, breaking bad habits, and dealing with destructive behaviors.

A Distorted View of God (Christ-Haunted People Pt. 1) // Trey Hayman // Psalm 139
In this kickoff message for our series, we look at Psalm 139 and talk about how a distorted image of God affects everything else in life. We unpack some popular caricatures of God and offer a new way forward. Looking at Psalm 139, we see the beautiful message that you are both known and loved.
*The inspiration for the title of this series comes from a quote from Flannery O'Connor.
Text: Psalm 139 O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. 3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. 4 You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. 5 You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! 7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave,[a] you are there. 9 If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, 10 even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. 11 I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— 12 but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you. 13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. 15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. 16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. 17 How precious are your thoughts about me,[b] O God. They cannot be numbered! 18 I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me! 19 O God, if only you would destroy the wicked! Get out of my life, you murderers! 20 They blaspheme you; your enemies misuse your name. 21 O Lord, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you? 22 Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies. 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. #nashvillechurch #sermon #psalm139#nashvillechurch #sermon #psalm139

Being with God: How to Practice Contemplative Prayer // Trey Hayman // Prayer Pt. 4
What does it mean to "pray without ceasing?"
In our fourth week of our series on prayer through Practicing the Way, we talk about the stage of prayer called, "being with God" or what others have referred to as contemplative prayer.
We talk about a way of prayer that is saturated in the love of God, a posture of being more than doing.
We talk about battles we face in this type of prayer. This type of prayer focusing on the presence of God challenges our conceptions of love and safety as well as our culture of consumerism.
It challenges us to move from pursuing love to recognizing we are loved and receiving that love and moves us into loving others.
It challenges us to move from short term fixes to long term well-being.
It challenges us to move from productivity and performance to presence, from competitiveness to compassion, and from complacency to commission.
We end the message with a practical way to start to embody this type of prayer.

Talking to God: The Lord's Prayer // Trey Hayman | Practicing the Way: Prayer Pt. 1
Have you ever been bored while praying? Wondered why we pray?
Have you heard of people who seem to love prayer and wish that could be you?
A lot of us feel guilt when it comes to prayer. We think we should do it more, but we don't, and we feel bad about that. Others of us feel indifferent about it. What's the point anyways? Does prayer actually change anything?
Others of us feel frustration with prayer. We've prayed for God to show up before, it seems like there was no answer. What now? In this message, we kick off our series with Practicing the Way on Prayer.
This week, we talk about the first movement of prayer: Talking to God.
Lord, teach us to pray.

Jonah: Repentance is Good for You // Trey Hayman | Whole Bodied Faith Pt. 2

In this message, we kick off our series on a whole-bodied faith. We look at Amos 5 and talk about the King and the Kingdom. What is the Kingdom of God? What do we do about justice? We look at this and more in this message.
Amos 5:18-27 (NLT) Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! Why do you long for the day of the Lord? That day will be darkness, not light. 19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him. 20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light— pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness? 21 “I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me. 22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. 23 Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. 24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! 25 “Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel? 26 You have lifted up the shrine of your king, the pedestal of your idols, the star of your god[b]— which you made for yourselves. 27 Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus,” says the Lord, whose name is God Almighty.

What did Jesus mean when he said he came to bring a sword? | Peace | Advent Week 4
In Matthew 10, Jesus says that he came to bring a sword.
What does a sword have to do with peace?
Matthew 10:34-39 (NLT)
"Don't imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword. 35 'I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 Your enemies will be right in your own household!' 37 "If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. 38 If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. 39 If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.

Who is Jesus? | I AM the Vine | John 15:1-17 Sermon
What does it mean to abide in Christ?
In this message from Trey Hayman we talk about what it means to dwell with Christ and how to develop a close relationship with God that is closer than any relationship you know.
John 15:1-17 (NLT)
15 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. 3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. 5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. 7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! 8 When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father. 9 “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. 10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

Who Is Jesus? | I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life | John 14:1-14 Sermon
What does Jesus mean when he says he is the way, the truth, and the life?
Any one of these can seem massively offensive to our modern sensibilities.
In this message, we particularly look at the idea of Jesus as the Truth.
We talk about doubt, deconstruction, questioning your faith, and the difference between faith in Jesus and beliefs about Jesus.
If you (like us) have questioned things about your faith, this message is for you.
You're not alone.

John 14
“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. 7 If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!” 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” 9 Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. 11 Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do. 12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. 13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!

Join Lead Pastor Trey Hayman and Worship & Mission Pastor Karly Butler as they discuss how mental health and emotional health intersect with their spiritual lives.
This week they will talk specifically the emotionality of Jesus and what we can learn about how he interacts with the disciples when they seem anxious.
SCRIPTURE:
Matthew 21:12-17 (NLT)
Jesus Clears the Temple
22 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. 23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.
24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”
27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!”
28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”
29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said.
So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.
31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”
32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.
34 After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 When the people recognized Jesus, the news of his arrival spread quickly throughout the whole area, and soon people were bringing all their sick to be healed. 36 They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.

We'll talk about how Jesus's suffering shows us Christians can cry, be depressed, and walk through hardship.
We'll talk about the already & not yet Kingdom of God.
We'll end by looking at how Jesus's resurrection life has totally altered the course of human history. For more info on that, check out John Ortberg's book, Who is This Man?
Sermon from Trey Hayman on October 2, 2022.
John 11:17-34 (NLT)
17 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. 18 Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem, 19 and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. 20 When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” 23 Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.” 25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” 28 Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” 29 So Mary immediately went to him. 30 Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. 31 When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. 32 When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them.

1) if they sense of danger approaching
2) to satisfy curiosity
3) if they are not paying attention while grazing
4)If other sheep are doing it too (strong flocking instinct)
Ten Common Fears that Hold People Back in Life (According to Amy Morin in INC Magazine)
Change Loneliness Failure Rejection Uncertainty Something bad happening Getting hurt Being judged Inadequacy Loss of freedomWe'll talk about each of these fears and how Jesus offers a different way than being governed by these and how he speaks to each of these fears.
John 10:11-18 (NLT)
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep. 12 A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock. 13 The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep.
14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, 15 just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd.
17 “The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again. 18 No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”

Who is Jesus? | I AM the Gate for the Sheep | John 10:1-10 Sermon
In John 10, Jesus refers to himself as the gate for the sheep. Other translations say he is the door for the sheep. What does this mean? Why is it relevant for your life?
In this sermon from Trey Hayman we will talk about the good life and Jesus's statement in John 10:10, where he says his purpose is for them (the sheep) to have a rich and satisfying life (or abundant life).
We'll talk about an incredibly important question for our lives. What leads us to a rich and satisfying life? Our answer to that will guide a lot of our decisions.
Many of us struggle to trust that what God has is best for us. We look to success, happiness, influence, relationships, morality, and other things to lead us into a good life.
Perhaps we trust God, not as the one who leads to abundant life but simply as one who takes care of what happens when we die. How do we learn to trust Jesus as the one who is the way to abundant life not just for the future, but for today? And why do other ways lead to disappointment?
Tune in as we talk about all this and more as we continue our series on the "I AM" statements in the Gospel of John, looking at who Jesus says he is.
JOHN 10:1-10 (NLT)
10 “I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber! 2 But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.4 After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice.5 They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”
6 Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what he meant, 7 so he explained it to them: “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who came before me[a] were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. 9 Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved.[b] They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. 10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

In this message, we look at the story of Ruth and how God meets us in the midst of everyday, ordinary life.

The Fall of Jericho (Joshua 6) & Violence in the Bible | Sermon by Trey Hayman
If you've been around church, you've probably heard about the story of the fall of Jericho.
We sing about in kids' songs, and we talk about the power of God to tear down seemingly unmovable walls.
As we're reading through the Bible though, sometimes what happens in these stories doesn't seem so "kid friendly."
How do deal with things like conquest and war in the Bible? In this message, we're going to talk about this and talk about some powerful things we learn about God from this story (even if it seems odd to our modern sensibilities).

The Great Commission (Make Disciples) | Matthew 28:16-20 Message
If you grew up in or around church, you probably have heard these verses.
Depending on your tradition, they may be more like the Great Suggestion or the Great Guilt Trip.
Part of our mission is to make disciple-making disciples of Jesus, but what does that mean? A lot of people profess to be Christian. Is that the same as being a disciple?
Tune into this message from July 17, 2022, as we wrap our series in Matthew and talk about all these things and more.

What It Means to Love God with All You Are | Deuteronomy 6:4-9 & Matthew 22:34-40

Tune into this message as we talk about what it means to love God with all our hearts, all our souls, and all our strength.

The Transfiguration of Jesus | Matthew 17:1-13
When you think about your life, what's at the top of the mountain? What is that thing that you spend your life trying to get? Is it happiness, retirement, financial stability, a relationship?
In this message, we'll talk about common things we spend our lives pursuing and how they fall short. We'll then talk about the theme of the mountain in the Bible, focusing on a story in Matthew 17:1-13, known as the Transfiguration. What we'll see is that Jesus is incredibly beautiful and glorious. A life built on Him is the surest foundation, and anything else will dissapoint.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees | Matthew 16:5-12
When we realize some of the things we used to believe aren't totally true, it can be really unsettling - particularly with issues of faith. A natural tendency is to label things as either entirely good or entirely bad, but oftentimes teaching is more nuanced than that.
The Bible says quite a bit about "teaching" and the danger of bad teaching. In such a polarized time, how do we discern what is good and what is bad? Perhaps, we need more nuanced language to this question.
In Matthew, when Jesus tells his disciples to beware of the yeast (teaching) of the Pharisees and Sadducees, he is not saying he disagrees with everything they believe. In fact, he shares some important beliefs. He is concerned with particular things they are teaching.
In this message, we talk about how the best bad teaching contains elements of truth, the effects of bad teaching, the importance and difficulty of discernment, and building our lives on the foundation of Jesus.
MATTHEW 16:5-12 5 Later, after they crossed to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 “Watch out!” Jesus warned them. “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread. 8 Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “You have so little faith! Why are you arguing with each other about having no bread? 9 Don’t you understand even yet? Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up? 10 Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up? 11 Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say, ‘Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’” 12 Then at last they understood that he wasn’t speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Rituals in Leviticus | Sermon by Trey Hayman
Habits are incredibly important. Our conscious and unconscious habits shape us into who we're becoming. Some might refer to habits using other words, like practices or even rituals.
In this short kick-off to our Leviticus series, we're talking about habits in Leviticus, through the lens of rituals, why they matter, and what they do to us.
Commentator Samuel Balentine described Leviticus as the most neglected of the neglected biblical books.
Functionally, most people probably would not recognize if we removed Leviticus from our Bibles. Why is it in there? What relevance does it have for our lives?

Moses's Shiny Face & The Problem with Idols (Video Version) | Exodus 34:28-35 | Message by Trey Hayman
There's this interesting story in Exodus 34, where Moses comes down from Mount Sinai after being with God and his face is radiant, so much so that it scares the Israelites. What's going on with this? In this message, we'll talk about how being in God's presence changes us.
Unfortunately though, many of us try to manufacture things that seem "of God." We'll talk about the problem of the golden calf, idols we have, and how that can play out in the church, leading not only to the creation of idols but their protection.
