What does it mean to live faith today? And is this the same as what it meant yesterday? or even last year or ten years ago? What does it mean to live faith authentically? Faith today seems to produce more questions than answers, more doubts than certainties, more concerns than security. What does it mean to live Christ in a real, authentic manner that is not fake or artificial?
Today’s dialogue jumps into such questions as the aforementioned, and then some…

Redeeming the Bat out of Hell in me and you through the act of becoming love
Redeeming the Bat out of Hell in me and you through the act of becoming love
www.new-wineskins.org
Peacemaking comes when we seek to act in love. Action that comes in Christ through the Holy Spirit. Christ took Action and stood for change dying for our sins because of His deep love for us.
In the truth of redemption there is found a radicalness unparalleled throughout history. That is, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is such a lover of the other, He seeks out those who are at once passionate persecutors of Him and His people. He seeks them out in love in order to redeem the bat out of hell in me and in you. It is an act of transformation - in Christ, through the Spirit. Transforming the persecutor into one passionately pursuing love (story of Paul, me & you).
How is the follower of Christ to act in a time when love of self is a powerful force?

Welcome to New Wineskins on Clubhouse where we seek to build relational bridges through Jesus by engaging relevant subjects. We have been talking about Trinitarian Theology as bridge building from racism to peacemaking. We have previously defined Trinitarian Theology, among other things, as being the relationship of self-giving, other focused love of God the Father, God the Son & God the Holy Spirit one to the other from before the beginning and to us in Jesus Christ. For those of us who have a Trinitarian Theology as a core life value, that Trinitarian love we talk about should be pouring out to the other in and through us. During this Lenten Season as we HEAD TO THE CROSS Let us face Christ in HIS TRAUMA AS HE Becomes Our PEACEMaker - Christ took Action and stood for change dying for our sins because of His deep love for us So as we continue talking about belonging and what does peacemaking look like in the context of racism KEEP CHRIST’S JOURNEY TO THE CROSS FOR US ON OUR HEARTS AND MIND

What does peacemaking look like in the context of racism? Our dialogue last week focused on our mutual belonging to the Triune God in and through Jesus. As followers of Jesus Christ, this “belonging” extends to one another.

What does it mean to procure peace? Peacemaking should move from seeking vengeance or avoiding conflict to reconciling relationships and making society whole.
Being a bridge-builder is to be compelled by the love of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:14) in God’s ministry of reconciling the world to Himself. As Jesus’ followers, we are invited to participate in the ministry of reconciliation and this should serve as our catalyst for the movement from racism to peacemaking. We can all publicly take a stand as peacemakers. Then, we need to do the work.

Trinitarian Theology & Its Impact on Race - Epilogue
Trinitarian Theology & Its Impact on Race - Epilogue
This discussion of a Trinitarian relational Theology and its impact on race has been really good yet really hard, and we thank you, Pastor Cliff, for your leadership in this. While today concludes this series in its present form, we will continue to dialogue the issue of racism in the context of SELF-GIVING, OTHER FOCUSED LOVE OF ONE ANOTHER as reflected in Father, Son and Holy Spirit in whatever we engage. The question remains “how should my core value of a Trinitarian Theology impact racism?”

Trinitarian Theology & Its Impact on Race - Part IV
This has been a profound movement of our discussion of Trinitarian Theology into its impact on race. This week we continue to press into the stories of life as they relate to personal and systemic racism so to bring to light the evil horrors of racism. Our stories are illuminating, difficult, tragic, elevating. They are stories of the human. They are hard to hear and share…but they are necessary.
The question remains “how should my core value of a Trinitarian Theology impact racism?”

New Wine Uncorked: So You say God is Here…Is He?
#love #trinity #jesus #holyspirit #father #newwine #nwnws #trinitarian #faith #church
The discussion this morning flows from the truth of presence and the truth of love. That is, the proclamation from the Biblical script says not only the God is Love but that God is here. Are these two claims true? And if so, how? Do they play out together on the world’s stage, or are they separate truths that remain locked in their own boxes stowed away in the corners of the stage? And, if this is all true - God is love and God is present - what then of the implications for those who claim to be followers of this God?
The Trinity is the paradigm by which we are to live. It is dynamic in relation. It is dynamic in its love. What then for the creature said to be created in the image of this very God?

Trinitarian Theology & Its Impact on Race - Part III
The discussion this morning continues the movement into Trinitarian relational theology and its impact on race. Last week a little bit was shared about the Doctrine of Discovery……a Papal Bull of the 1400’s, as the beginning of the social construct of racism in this country. Its impact continues to this day. Over the week we were asked to think about how our history impacts the posture of our hearts and lifestyle. How does my core values, or lifestyle, impact racism?

Trinitarian Theology & Its Impact on Race Pt I
The discussion this morning continues the movement into Trinitarian theology and its significance. We’ve talked about the one another’s in scripture and what it looks like to treat each other with mutual honor (dignity) and respect. It’s fitting on the first day of Black History Month that today and for the next several weeks, we will focus on the question of Trinitarian Theology and its impact on race.

The discussion this morning flows from the truth of theology, specifically, Trinitarian theology. How does a Trinitarian, Christ-centered theology play out in how we see the “other”? Does it matter if one has a Trinitarian theology, and if so, why does this matter?
First things first. At New Wine, New Wineskins we believe that theology does matter, and that you, and I are theologians. Theology is faith seeking understanding and this is meant to be done both individually and communally.
Trinitarian theology recognizes God’s relational disclosure and seeks to frame our understanding of divine and human being in interpersonal and communal terms. Truth is, the Trinity is the paradigm by which we are to live. It is dynamic in relation; thus, God's being is His eternal, intrinsic communion. So what then of today?

Trinitarian Theology: Movement of Self-Giving
The discussion this morning continues the movement into Trinitarian theology and its significance. Today we want to move into what a Trinitarian theology of self-giving other focused love looks like. Considering the one another’s of scripture, what does it look like to treat each other with mutual honor (dignity) and respect? As you consider your own context…family, neighborhood, city, country, where does this self-giving, other focused love flow out of you? Where do you struggle & how is the Lord getting your attention?

The discussion this morning continues the movement into Trinitarian theology. What does it mean to have a Trinitarian theology, and why does this matter? Our identity as relational people of the Triune (relational) God is foundational to our purpose and our activity.

The discussion this morning flows from the truth of theology, specifically, Trinitarian theology. How does a Trinitarian, Christ-centered theology play out in how we see the “other”? Where the body of Christ gets it right and where it does not. Theology, the Trinity... Where do we even start?
As the Christian Scriptures reveal, the human is created in the image of the Trinity – A Godhead that does not remain absent or quiet throughout the course of history. We are not talking about a God hidden behind divine revelation. Rather, God is for us fully revealed and fully concealed in His self-disclosure. The Christian Scriptures calls the reader into transformation –conversion—which is not a static event, something that happens once in a lifetime, but a continual process of turning toward the Son, who leads us, in union with the Holy Spirit, into an ever-deepening relationship with the Father. Thus, we are brought into the very life of the Trinity, that communion of love without end.
The Trinity is the paradigm by which we are to live. It is dynamic in relation; thus, God's being is His eternal, intrinsic communion. So what then of today?

Epiphany: God is with us! Entering the New Year through the looking glass of hope
Good morning. Welcome to New Wine New Wineskins on Clubhouse where we seek to build relational bridges through Jesus by engaging relevant subjects. The discussion this morning flows from the newness of the year while continuing in the goodness of our Christmas celebrations. Truth is, Christmas lasts forty days – from Christmas eve to the presentation of the Christ child in the temple (Feb 2), according to the traditional liturgical calendar. And the 12 days of Christmas that run from the 25th of Dec through Jan 6th are known as Epiphany.
Epiphany is the entrance – the presentation of hope, peace, joy to all of humanity– the reality of love with us. After all, God is “with us”—Emmanuel. Jesus manifests the divine presence in his entire incarnate state.
So Where do we find ourselves this week? A couple days before the Biblical manifestation/presentation of Jesus for the world’s sake? Is the inn of our heart open for guests, or have we already closed off to all that stands before us?

Following Jesus means that you not only know Him, but are willing to go to the places and people He calls us to. So often the path before the Christian is a path of unknowing - a path of mystery that expects us to let go and give into the crazy, scandalous ways of living and loving as Jesus So how are to navigate the terrain before us? How do we faithfully step into the truth of loving me, you and everyone in between?

The truth of being a Christian is living in the “unbearable tension” that comes from being a member of two communities anchored in what so often seems to be two different and incompatible stories… So how are to navigate the terrain before us?
In this episode of New Wine Uncorked, Phil, Kayla, Jim, and Matt traverse the wonderful terrain of being in between… How are we to live between two worlds such that we are in one but not of it while we are of one world but not in it just yet?

In this episode of New Wine Uncorked, Phil, Kayla, and Matt traverse the wonderful terrain of love… When we follow Jesus on to the path of love, where exactly does this path lead? And am I equipped to walk such a path?

New Wine Uncorked - Love Beyond Limits: The Impossible Possibility?
#love #trinity #jesus #newwine #nwnws
Knowing God’s heart means consistently, radically, and very concretely announcing, through our words and deeds, that God is love. And in this proclamation, we announce that every time fear, isolation, or despair begin to invade our soul we not only know this is not something that comes from God but that in such times our hearts have to cling ferociously to God.
In this episode of New Wine Uncorked, Phil, Kayla, Jim, and Matt traverse the wonderful terrain of love… Love of God, Love of self, Love of neighbor.

New Wine Uncorked- The Truth of Love: You, Me and being the Be-loved
Am I loveable? Are you loveable? According to the Christian Scripture, the answer is a resounding YES! But is it so inside of me? Do I believe that I am the beloved of the Creator of all things? More than this, do I believe you are His beloved?
Am I loveable? Are you loveable? According to the Christian Scripture, the answer is a resounding YES! But is it so inside of me? Do I believe that I am the beloved of the Creator of all things? More than this, do I believe you are His beloved? In this episode of New Wine UnCorked, Jim, Kayla, and Matt step into the dialogue of faith and life by examining the truth of divine love. What does it mean to be unconditionally loved, and how should this impact my life and the way and the who I love? Does the love of Christ compel me at all? Or have I become numb to heaven’s embrace of love?

New Wine Uncorked: Who is Jesus and Why should I follow Him?
New Wine Uncorked: Who is Jesus and Why should I follow Him?
Who is Jesus and why does it matter? In this episode of New Wine UnCorked, Phil and Matt step into the dialogue of faith and life by examining the truth of Jesus. Who is this man who claims to be God? And what is the connection between Jesus and me? That is, the human is created in the image of a God who is relational, so what then are the implications for life, for church, for our engagement of the world? How does the Christian understand Jesus so to then understand the one standing in front of me?
Dialogue is the truth of participation as dia via Latin from Greek dia-logos invokes a participatory conversation. It is interactive. From dia "through" + legein "speak." Going through the Word so to engage through our word, Phil and Matt seek to uncork the impossible possibility of the human and our pursuit of this Uncommon God so to realize our common good.

In this episode of New Wine UnCorked, Phil, Matt, and Jim continue the ongoing dialogue of faith and life by examining the truth of our created community in light of self-care. Clean Up the Temple of Our Democracy and Our Hearts
Clean Up the Temple of Our Democracy and Our Hearts
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi stated last week that the rioters at the US Capitol engaged in the “desecration” of the “temple” of our democracy. That is very religious terminology applied to a secular state, which interestingly is not uncommon in the United States throughout our history. We will focus on this theme of desecration involving democratic institutions as well as the Christian religion in our society.
Regardless of one’s take about what occurred last week, what do you make of the use of the terminology of “desecration” and “temple” being applied to the riot at the US Capitol?
Such is the content of today’s episode.

New Wine Tastings - Talking to the Choir? COVID Restrictions at Church
New Wine Tastings - Talking to the Choir? COVID Restrictions at Church
Sometimes you’ll hear someone say “I’m talking to the choir” when engaging those who think the same way as they do on an issue. However, we are facing more often than not in our churches and broader cultural settings today the challenge that not everyone thinks the same way as we do on a variety of issues. We may even find that our churches are divided on recent governmental restrictions related to COVID and that we are not speaking to the choir much of the time. Take, for example, Washington’s governor’s determination not to allow congregational or choir singing (on top of the already existing regulations requiring reduced attendance and wearing of masks in public worship) in light of COVID. We will delve into this subject at New Wine Tastings today in the hopes of gaining greater understanding and clarity on the issues while also safeguarding empathy and care for those who think differently than we do. That way, even though we may not end up seeing matters the same way or speaking to the choir on every issue, at least we truly see and understand one another in pursuit of grace and truth.

New Wine UnCorked - Don’t Bully Me: Turning Over the Bruised Cheek
New Wine UnCorked - Don’t Bully Me: Turning Over the Bruised Cheek
The Christian still encounters the darkness of today—so what then is the follower of Christ to do? As Micah reminds, followers of Christ are called to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly. In reverse the three requirements are a humble fellowship with God, that is, childlike dependence on Him; then a love for kindness, that is, a heart that loves to show mercy; and then deeds of justice, that is, a life of faith-filled actions, especially on behalf of those who are mistreated.
In this episode of New Wine UnCorked, the mistreatment of the other is the topic of our dialogue as Paul Coughlin joins Dr. Matthew Farlow. Paul is the founder and president of The Protectors. The Protectors Is the only faith-centered organization helping Christian schools across the world for more than a decade to reduce bullying through its effective and evidence-based program.

New Wine Tastings - Bonhoeffer and the Racialized Church
New Wine Tastings - Bonhoeffer and the Racialized Church
Our society has paid a lot of attention to race in recent months in view of George Floyd’s murder, and also the tragic deaths of many African Americans at the hands of police. Not only has the society at large been forced to deal with the problem of whiteness, but also the church has had to wrestle with it. In this light, I am struck by the fact that you dedicate this book to a late friend, Stacy Jo Dunn, who had been a leader at the same church, who was a police officer in Portland, and who was African American. This dedication is so poignant and appropriate. In my estimation, it is also appropriate that you bring Bonhoeffer and his theology to bear on this subject. How does Bonhoeffer and his theology bear import for a discussion of race in the United States today, including gentrified and racialized Portland?

New Wine Tastings - Conspiracy Theories: Conspiring Against Incivility and Insanity
New Wine Tastings - Conspiracy Theories: Conspiring Against Incivility and Insanity
This episode on conspiracy theories helps us pursue grace and truth together in conversations with people on this subject. We need to guard against incivility on the one hand and insanity on the other hand. This is not an easy task for any of us, but it is critically important if we are to build our society rather than tear it and one another apart.

The Church as a Trinitarian Community in a Culture of Individualism
The Church as a Trinitarian Community in a Culture of Individualism
What does it mean to say that the church is a Trinitarian community? What is the import of this perspective, including how it might bear on such phrases like “The Purpose Driven Church”?
Continuing the journey through Drs. Harper and Metzger’s book “Exploring Ecclesiology,” this week Drs. Farlow and Metzger are joined by New Wine, New Wineskin leaders Trudi Sang, Kayla Farlow, and Richard Fox. The topic of discussion on the table this week: The Church as a Trinitarian Community is a Culture of Individualism.

New Wine UnCorked - Focus on the Family: Seeing the One, the Three or the Many?
New Wine UnCorked - Focus on the Family: Seeing the One, the Three or the Many?
What is the focus of the church? COVID-19, Racism, Politics - all cry out for the church’s attention. At one time those right with religion had the church squarely focused on the family. So what then of this day?
What or who should be centered in the mind’s eye of the church? Should any one of the aforementioned be a main focus? Should all them? What should be the focus of the church and how? Can the bride have any other focus than her bridegroom? Where does Jesus fit into all of this reality?
In this episode of New Wine UnCorked, Phil, Tony, and Matt dive into the swamplands of church foci - what is it that weighs heavily on the heart of the church?

New Wine Tastings - Conspiracy Theories: Harmful and/or Healthy?
New Wine Tastings - Conspiracy Theories: Harmful and/or Healthy?
Everywhere you turn it seems you are confronted with or will soon be confronted with a conspiracy theory. If we step back and look at the sweep of American history, we may be surprised to know that there has often been a predilection for such theorizing.
It’s in the tap water or in the ‘Covid’ air—just like a conspiracy theory might claim. Maybe you know someone who is a conspiracy theorist or an adherent. Then again, how would you even know? Why does it matter that we discuss this subject? How harmful or healthy could theorizing about conspiracies really be?
To address many of these types of questions, in this episode of New Wine Tastings Dr Metzger enters the dialogue with Professors Joseph E. Uscinski and John W. Morehead.

New Wine Tastings: Conspiracy Theories - In Pursuit of Truth
New Wine Tastings: Conspiracy Theories - In Pursuit of Truth
Conspiracy theories come in all sizes and shapes and fall across the ideological and cultural spectrum. A conspiracy theory may be false or true, contrary to what many think. No one wants to be called a conspiracy theorist, as it is a derogatory label, like cult leader or cult member. So when we use both terms to label someone, we are insulting them twice. Now what do you think of the idea that the New Testament may be a conspiracy theory? Someone floating another conspiracy theory and attacking the church?

New Wine Table Talks - Exploring Ecclesiology: Introducing the Foundation
New Wine Table Talks - Exploring Ecclesiology: Introducing the Foundation
A brilliant look into the theological foundation of the Church, Dr Metzger and Harper’s book “Exploring Ecclesiology” strikes at the heart of today’s need for the church. Because the church does not simply bear witness to its community – it ultimately bears witness to its God – the need of today is a profound understanding of what it means to be Church. In this episode of New Wine Table Talks, Drs. Metzger and Harper sit down with Dr Farlow to discuss the theology, the need, and the overarching truth of a robust exploration of the church today so to be the church God calls His people to be.

Trinitarian Theology: Prospects and Perils for Cultural Engagement
Trinitarian Theology: Prospects and Perils for Cultural Engagement
Most Christians – like many non-Christians—hear or read the word ‘God’ and their immediate , second, and maybe even third thought does not automatically and inevitably think of the Triune Being—Father, Son, and Spirit. Rather, their thought, reality, and idea of “God” points to a supreme monad. In this episode of New Wine Table Talks Drs. Metzger, Harper and Farlow traverse the landscape and reality of Trinitarian theology so to engage the prospects and perils for Cultural Engagement. #theology #trinitarian #tabletalks #newwinenewwineskins #jesus

New Wine Tastings: Orthopathy - It’s Not a Multifaith Weed Killer
New Wine Tastings: Orthopathy - It’s Not a Multifaith Weed Killer
You may be familiar with the subject matter of orthodoxy and orthopraxy. But what about orthopathy? No, it is not a weed killer, like “Ortho Weed B Gon”. Orthodoxy deals with right doctrine. Orthopraxy deals with right practice. Orthopathy deals with right passion. If we wish to take to heart the Scriptures’ emphasis on loving God with our whole heart and our diverse neighbors as ourselves, we must account for all three: orthodoxy, orthopraxy, and orthopathy. Today it is my privilege to introduce to you John Morehead and Phil Wyman who will dialogue with me on the important role orthopathy plays in Christian witness and neighborliness in our multifaith world. Orthopathy does not kill multifaith engagement but nourishes it in honor of Jesus and our neighbors of diverse faith traditions and perspectives. Check out the video at the close of this blog post for the full interview.

New Wine Tastings: Finding Our Way Home - Inclusive Housing for People with Disabilities
New Wine Tastings: Finding Our Way Home - Inclusive Housing for People with Disabilities
Our guest today at “New Wine Tastings” is Micaela Connery. Micaela is the CEO of The Kelsey. The focus of The Kelsey is “Accelerating and advocating for housing where all people, of all abilities and incomes, can thrive.” I was introduced to Micaela and The Kelsey through Greg Goodwin and the Kuni Foundation. Greg shared with me about The Kelsey’s focus on housing and language of “inclusion natives.” I was so intrigued that I asked Greg if he could introduce me to Micaela to find out more about their work. As some of you know, New Wine held a conference on disabilities a year ago and then made this the focus of our autumn retreat last year at the Oregon Coast.

New Wine Tastings: How to Run the Race Marathon in the Face of Trauma and Fatigue
New Wine Tastings: How to Run the Race Marathon in the Face of Trauma and Fatigue
Looking at the landscape of culture brings about a great concern in the midst of all the racial turmoil. While we are certainly concerned about racial turmoil, this is not really a new phenomenon. The racial turmoil has always been there. It’s just that many people are tired of not addressing it in a sustained way. But how long will we be able to sustain our engagement?
For many people, the racial wounds and trauma go deep. For others, often there is talk of “racial fatigue.” In this episode of New Wine Tastings, we are seeking to deal with strategic soul care to help us continue on the journey and become more resilient to run the race well the entire length of the marathon.
Two individuals who are very adept in addressing this subject and will help set the pace are…
Dr. Jessica Taylor is the VP of Diversity and Inclusive Development at Multnomah University. She is leading the way forward for Multnomah as an institution/community seeking to grow in racial sensitivity, understanding, and equity. She and her team recently led an amazing workshop that is serving as a catalyst for us this coming year and beyond. Jessica has a professional background in coaching and counseling, and is the author of Between a Rock and a Scarred Place: Relationship Recovery for Hurting Hearts.

Pastor David Swanson is the founding pastor of New Community Covenant Church, a multiracial congregation on the South Side of Chicago. He also serves as the CEO of New Community Outreach, a non-profit organization working to reduce causes of trauma and raise opportunities for equity in Chicago. David is also the author of Rediscipling the White Church: From Cheap Diversity to True Discipleship (with a foreword by Brenda Salter McNeil).

New Wine Table Talks - Conspiring Truth: QAnon and the Colossian Heresy
New Wine Table Talks - Conspiring Truth: QAnon and the Colossian Heresy
Conspiracies swirl around in all realities of life – JFK, Princess Dianna, Moon landing, Pizzagate, Watergate, COVID hoax, QAnon, and maybe, in the minds of some, the greatest of all conspiracies, the empty tomb.
What is the church to do with conspiracy theories? By recognizing them does the church lend credence to their lifespan or in ignoring them does the church do more harm? In this episode of New Wine Table Talks we enter into the dialogue of conspiracy theories in hope of gaining clarity.
Joining Dr Matt Farlow for this episode are John Morehead and Dr Paul Louis Metzger…

New Wine UnCorked - Conspiracy This: What’s Your Q?
Who is the church today and is she real, authentic, or anonymous, a shadow of her own existence?
In this episode of New Wine UnCorked Tony, Phil, Quincy and Matt dive into the pool of conspiracy. What is the conspiracy cup you drink from? We all buy into ideologies, question is, who is behind such ideologies?
Join us as we seek to unpack the American church’s obsession with conspiracy theories and our persecution complex. How has this path moulded the hearts and minds of the church, and what are the implications for our understanding of the Gospel?

New Wine Table Talks - Remove Dividing Walls of Hostility and Indifference
We are a divided people. Truth is though, we are a connected people. Question remains, what truth will we live out. Today’s topic for this episode of New Wine Table Talks is: Remove Dividing Walls of Hostility and Indifference
We are stoked to enter into the conversation of open access to one another. To dialogue and engage arenas, subjects, and ideas in an open and equitable way so to begin removing the walls of hostility and indifference in our own minds and hearts bound up with laws of social segregation and consumer comfort.
Joining Dr Metzger and myself today for our Table Talk are Pastors Jeff Harley, Noelani Jai, Jim Sequeira and Jimi Calhoun.
