My Creative Life for Artists and Creators

By Nancy Miller

My name is Nancy Miller, and I'm an illustrator and art teacher in Georgia. I'm interested in other artists and how they stay motivated and keep passionate about their own work. How they sell and market themselves. How do you balance your home, creative, and work-life? I will be documenting my own creative process in these podcasts. Thanks for listening!

Hi Everyone, my special guest is Shirley Ng-Benitez, award-winning children's book author and illustrator. She was kind to share her experience of going out on sub with her manuscript and then to get the call that it had been acquired! Yeah!! Here is more about Shirley and her wonderful cause Awetober!

Shirley Ng-Benitez

I love art and I’m so grateful to be able to connect through it with others. I’m always experimenting with traditional media: watercolor, gouache, pencil, dip pen & ink, and recently painted & cut-paper collage. I’ve worked as a Professional Lettering Artist for American Greetings, was an art director, print manager, and designer for various design firms in Arizona and California, and then started GabbyandCo.com, my design firm, creating logos, marketing materials, and product design for the health, technology, retail, food, toy, and publishing industries.

In ’09, I followed my dream to illustrate books for children, and have since had the honor of illustrating over 30. Compassion and connection are big goals in my work as I strive to create books that readers of all ages will find heart and hope—even when life throws a curveball. I live in the Bay Area, California with my family and two black cats, Miso & Luna, and am thrilled to be writing and illustrating for children. My debut author/illustrated picture book DOWN, THROUGH, UP by Quill Tree Books/Harper Collins, will be released in Spring ’24.

138 Caitlyn Notaro, Children's Book Author and Illustrator

Hi Everyone! Today my special guest is children's book author and illustrator Caitlyn Notaro. Here is a bit about Caitlyn: In 4th grade, Caitlyn Notaro was asked to create her dream pet during art class. Instead of a dog or cat, she created a purple spotted fire-breathing dragon out of clay. Once she realized she had a knack for imagining, she never looked back. Fast forward many years, and Caitlyn is now an Author/illustrator in Upstate, New York, where she lives in an old Victorian home with her husband and vivacious toddler. She loves creating soft, yet cinematic worlds for children to visit in the form of picture books. Caitlyn is a member of SCBWI, and facilitator for her local SCBWI monthly network meetups Caitlyn is now represented by Tara Gonzalez at Erin Murphy Literary Agency
