Hi Everyone, my special guest is Shirley Ng-Benitez, award-winning children's book author and illustrator. She was kind to share her experience of going out on sub with her manuscript and then to get the call that it had been acquired! Yeah!! Here is more about Shirley and her wonderful cause Awetober!

Shirley Ng-Benitez

I love art and I’m so grateful to be able to connect through it with others. I’m always experimenting with traditional media: watercolor, gouache, pencil, dip pen & ink, and recently painted & cut-paper collage. I’ve worked as a Professional Lettering Artist for American Greetings, was an art director, print manager, and designer for various design firms in Arizona and California, and then started GabbyandCo.com, my design firm, creating logos, marketing materials, and product design for the health, technology, retail, food, toy, and publishing industries.

In ’09, I followed my dream to illustrate books for children, and have since had the honor of illustrating over 30. Compassion and connection are big goals in my work as I strive to create books that readers of all ages will find heart and hope—even when life throws a curveball. I live in the Bay Area, California with my family and two black cats, Miso & Luna, and am thrilled to be writing and illustrating for children. My debut author/illustrated picture book DOWN, THROUGH, UP by Quill Tree Books/Harper Collins, will be released in Spring ’24.

138 Caitlyn Notaro, Children's Book Author and Illustrator

Hi Everyone! Today my special guest is children's book author and illustrator Caitlyn Notaro. Here is a bit about Caitlyn: In 4th grade, Caitlyn Notaro was asked to create her dream pet during art class. Instead of a dog or cat, she created a purple spotted fire-breathing dragon out of clay. Once she realized she had a knack for imagining, she never looked back. Fast forward many years, and Caitlyn is now an Author/illustrator in Upstate, New York, where she lives in an old Victorian home with her husband and vivacious toddler. She loves creating soft, yet cinematic worlds for children to visit in the form of picture books. Caitlyn is a member of SCBWI, and facilitator for her local SCBWI monthly network meetups Caitlyn is now represented by Tara Gonzalez at Erin Murphy Literary Agency

111 Tara Gonzalez, Erin Murphy Literary Agent

111 Tara Gonzalez, Erin Murphy Literary Agent

Hi Everyone! I'm excited to announce I have an agent!! My agent is Tara Gonzalez,  Erin Murphy Literary Agency. She was so kind to speak with me today and tell us about her background as an agent, and share what are things she's looking for in a submission! Here is more about Tara:

Tara Gonzalez is an Associate Agent at the Erin Murphy Literary Agency, as well as the social media coordinator. She's located in Florida, although pre-pandemic she was always looking for an excuse to go elsewhere.

Tara is actively building her client list. She loves all ages of children's literature, from picture books to young adults, with some forays into the adult space. Her taste spans across broad ranges of genres, from contemporary, historical, literary, to adventure and fantasy. She loves characters and stories that resonate and strong voices.

Beyond books, Tara loves movies, cats, buying things she probably doesn't need on Etsy, making candles, and getting hooked on TV shows that get canceled after one season. She has her master's degree in Media and Communication Studies and a background in esports social media and team management.

107 Robin Martéa, Illustrator

Hi Everyone, on this episode of My Creative Life I have return guest Robin Martéa. She just finished her MFA in Illustration and shared some tips about searching for jobs in the current market. Here is more about Robin:

Robin Martéa is a visual artist, born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. Since grade school, she has been heavily involved in the visual arts and has since then, developed a strong foundation in mediums ranging from painting to photography. She earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and is currently pursuing her M.F.A. degree in Illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

“I like to think of my paintings as a window into my daydreams. Chasing my dreams is often done in the most unconventional way: through a brush and a canvas. My art, which is a direct reflection of my imagination, is illustrated through drawings that are grounded in hope. What motivates me are the works of artists and illustrators whose art tells a story in an imaginative way. When viewing my work, I’d like for the audience to bring all their aspirations to the table. Whether young or old, my hope is that they leave with their minds full of imagination and their hearts full of inspiration.”

On my 102nd podcast episode I spoke with Jun Zhou, a fellow illustration student I met in my fibers class. She was kind enough to share her experience as a freelance illustrator. Here is more about Jun:

Hi! Welcome to my world. This is Jun Zhou, an ambitious illustrator, motion media designer, and children's comic book artist. Now I am a graduate student at Savannah College of art and design.

The enthusiasm for drawing in my life began with Japanese manga, I got all my happy childhood from designing comic books and drawing animation frames. I could find true peace when I am drawing. Now I also enjoy communicating about ideas and arts with people, so feel free to send me a direct email, let's be friends.

Hope you have a great day :)

075 Liz Richards, Concept Artist

Hi Everyone! Today I have Liz Richards with me today, and she is a MFA Animation SCAD student, and working pro concept art. I really appreciate all the advice Liz gave me during my animation class. Here is more about Liz:

I live and work in sunny Burbank, California with my husband, 3 kiddos, and lucky black cat.

I use a combination of animation, set design, and illustration daily in my career as a senior art director and concept artist for theme parks and animation. I was an Imagineer with Walt Disney Imagineering for 7 years, and I continue to work with Disney and other clients now as a freelance artist while I’m raising my young family.

Some of my favorite professional projects have been creating the blacklight murals for Star Tours, creating plants for the Na’avi River Journey for Pandora(Avatar) at Disneyworld, and recently working on the preshow for the newly opened Enchanted Ta
