Spanning the past two decades of her career, Alyssa Monks: Be Perfectly Still features the artist’s large-scale portraits, painted lushly and expressively. The exhibition is curated by SLOMA (San Luis Obispo Museum of Art) Chief Curator Emma Saperstein and is on view through November 13, 2022.

Depicting the artist and those closest to her in intimate contexts, Monks’ paintings are simultaneously vulnerable and elusive, revealing her subjects in exposed positions but offering fragmented views through composition that invert foreground and background. Using semi-transparent filters of glass, vinyl, steam, water, or foliage, Monks creates surface tension that obscures the subject and disorients the viewer.

July 7, 2021 (New York) – “Following the success of the inaugural cohort, we are looking forward to an impactful second cycle grounded in such a poignant theme”, said Cory Silverstein, co-founder of Silver Art Projects. “Emerging artists are facing more and more obstacles on their paths to success and we at Silver Art Projects are thrilled to again share this inspiring space with 25 visionary individuals.” Joshua Pulman, Co-Founder of Silver Art Projects, commented: “It is our collective mission at Silver Art Projects to transform traditional models of art patronage in New York City to be more accessible and inclusive.
Silver Art Projects invited its first artist cohort into the World Trade Center in 2020, during a time when artists needed support more than ever. The inaugural cohort comprised a dynamic group of artists working across a variety of media—from oil painting and digital art to sculpture and design.
Members of the 2021 cohort will be guided through their residencies by three renowned artists and Mentors- in-Residence, Hank Willis Thomas/ For Freedoms, Tourmaline, and Chella Man, who will occupy studios alongside the cohort, as well as lead a robust program of 24 workshops designed to further residents’ practices and professional development. The overarching goal of the 2021 Mentor-in-Residence program is to amplify diverse perspectives and foster artistic practices embedded in activism.
The 2021 Selection Committee comprises a diverse and accomplished jury of six art world professionals who share a vested interest in elevating socially minded creative practices and art activism: the three mentors-in-residence, artists Hank Willis Thomas, Tourmaline, and Chella Man; Hall Rockefeller.

Noah talks to curator Robin K Williams about the exhibition Daniel Johnston: I Live My Broken Dreams, organized by The Contemporary Austin, Daniel Johnston: I Live My Broken Dreams is the first-ever museum survey of works by the visionary musician and visual artist Daniel Johnston (1961 – 2019). Best known for his music, Johnston was also an accomplished artist who exhibited his comic-inspired drawings during his lifetime. Yet, apart from his iconic “Hi, How Are You?” mural, painted in Austin in 1993, his abundant visual art remains little-known to most audiences. This exhibition will provide a rich presentation of Johnston’s work across disciplines, enabling visitors to explore the intricate connections between his prolific corpus of music and visual art. In addition to a selection of Johnston’s drawings and paintings, the presentation will include the artist’s home-recorded music and movies, as well as documentary footage of him rehearsing and performing.
This exhibition is conceived by Heather Pesanti and Robin K. Williams and organized by Robin K. Williams in close collaboration with The Daniel Johnston Trust. The Daniel Johnston Trust is Dick Johnston, Executor; Lee Foster, Curatorial Advisor; and Donny Veloz, Administrative Manager.

Claudia Hart was educated in art and architectural history in the late seventies and early eighties at NYU and Columbia University. Jen Stark’s art is driven by her interest in conceptualizing visual systems to simulate plant growth, evolution, infinity, fractals, mimetic topographies, and sacred geometries. Using available materials—paper, wood, metal, paint—Stark strives to make work that balances on a razor’s edge of optical seduction and perceptual engagement.

The resulting works often resemble organic, molecular, cloud-like structures, and are imbued with kinetic, undulating effects that serve to dislocate the viewer from staid reality into an immersive ecosphere of echoing patterns and the implausible designs found in nature. Even her vivid colors are in direct conversation with the natural world; the attractant/repellent properties of flowers encouraging pollination or insects warning birds of their poisonous traits, and the luminous mystery of phosphorescent sea creatures are among Stark’s concerns.

Baldessari sings Sol LeWitt's thirty-five "Sentences on Conceptual Art" (1969), forcing LeWitt's text into the melodies of well-known tunes, including "The Star-Spangled Banner." In this case Baldessari splits language from written form, once again embracing a simple didactic structure that is contradicted from within.

Noah introduces a conversation between Lee Krasner and Barbara Lee Diamonstein from 1978. Lenore "Lee" Krasner (born Lena Krassner on October 27, 1908 – June 19, 1984) was an American abstract expressionist painter, with a strong speciality in collage, who was married to Jackson Pollock. Although there was much cross-pollination between their two styles, the relationship somewhat overshadowed her contribution for some time. Krasner’s training, influenced by George Bridgman and Hans Hofmann, was the more formalized, especially in the depiction of human anatomy, and this enriched Pollock’s more intuitive and unstructured output.

Noah talks to Kim Dorland whose painting practice reflects a fascination with the enigmatic Canadian landscape as it comes into contact with contemporary urban experience. The psychological atmosphere represented by Dorland is confrontational and hallucinatory, disrupting conventional ideas that the natural world is a place of solace and contemplation. Using a dense matrix of intense colours, delirious textures, and passionate painterly touch, Dorland brings a paradoxical sense of displacement in which the artist’s relationship with nature is simultaneously one of awe and fear. In parallel with this, fragments of contemporary urban life materialize themselves in the form of ghostly figures and graffiti remnants. It is through these dueling representations of the landscape that Kim Dorland has created a body of work endowed with an emotional charge whose potential far exceeds the formal confines of the canvas.

Noah talks with legendary graffiti artist DELTA 2 was raised in the Spanish Harlem section of Manhattan and became involved in subway painting in the late 1970s. His early observations of IRT Kings such as LEE and BLADE drove him to create his own style. DELTA's subway painting career peaked from the early to mid 1980s. He became well known for his rapid takeovers of the 6 and 4 lines. During this time period DELTA also founded the crew Kings Arrive.

During his career he teamed up with writers such as MACK, SWAN, JOEY TDS, SHARP, PART ONE and others.

DELTA 2 also experienced success in the international art scene. Beginning in 1984 he painted in more conventional contexts. He participated in a Guillaume Gallozo graffiti art presentation for Valentino's 25th Anniversary in Rome, Italy and displayed and sold paintings throughout Europe.

DELTA's current work features traditional aerosol paintings--such as his work at the 2005 NYC Graffiti Hall of Fame--and meticulously detailed line art illustrations and letter explorations. He also continues working on fine art and comercial comissions. More on DELTA 2 in the Future.

Larry Ossei-Mensah is a Ghanaian-American independent curator and cultural critic who has documented contemporary art happenings for various publications including Uptown and Whitewall Magazine. His writings have profiled some of the most dynamic visual artists working today—Derrick Adams, Mickalene Thomas, Kehinde Wiley, Lorna Simpson and street artist JR. As a curator, Ossei-Mensah uses contemporary art and culture as a vehicle to redefine how we see ourselves and the world around us. He has organized exhibitions at commercial and nonprofit galleries throughout New York City featuring a roster of critically acclaimed emerging and mid-career artists including Firelei Baez, ruby amanze, Hugo McCloud, Brendan Fernandes, and Derek Fordjour to name a few. Ossei-Mensah is also the Co-Founder of ARTNOIR, a global collective of culturalists who design multimodal experiences aimed to engage this generation’s dynamic and diverse creative class. ARTNOIR serves as a tangible extension of Ossei-Mensah’s curatorial vision of “bridging gaps.” ARTNOIR’s inaugural event was a conversation on art and gender justice featuring Wangechi Mutu, Julie Mehretu and Adrienne Edwards. He currently serves as Co-Chair on Russell Simmons’ RUSH Artist Advisory Board, the Guggenheim’s Young Collectors Council, MoMA’s Friends of Education and as juror for the 2016 PULSE Prize.

Donald Kuspit was born and raised in New York, attended Stuyvesant High School, skipped 2 years, because he was chosen as a Ford Scholar then entered Columbia College when he was 16. T. W. Adorno was Kuspit’s mentor when Kuspit attended Goethe University in Frankfurt-am-Main. Kuspit was a member of the Dokumenta committee for 3 Dokumentas. Donald Kuspit’s doctorate in philosophy was on Alfred North Whitehead. Kuspit’s doctorate in art history was on Albrecht Durer. He was on the Policy Committee of the National Endowment for Arts for 2 years. Kuspit currently writes for Whitehot Magazine and other publications and continues to curate exhibitions and write books on contemporary art.
