Nomads You And I

Nomads You And I

By Cindy Dunagan

We Nomads have liquidated most of our possessions and have been living out of our Airstream van since July 21, 2020 so we can find more souls to love and inspire. Our hearts are in happy anticipation of falling in love with moments, doing things for the first time, experiencing beauty hard to put into words, and creating memories we will treasure forever.

Gaining The Glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ: A Scripture Hike through 2 Thessalonians 2:10-16

Welcome to this Scripture Hike of 2 Thessalonians 2:10-16 with the Nomads!

There are certain things we learn about a mountain only by hiking it, one laborious, yet exhilarating step at a time. When we stay in the moment enough to let it fill our senses with freshness and beauty, the hike becomes a part of us. We nomads have set out on a new quest in this series of NomadsYouAndi podcasts we're calling “Scripture Hikes” to discuss the word of God at a pace that is similar to the hikes we've been taking while we're living nomadically. Come join us now for a hike through the Word where we’ll encounter spiritual truths that we've found to be more strengthening to our spirits, more fragrant to our hearts, and more refreshing to our souls, than any evergreen forest, pristine mountain spring, or mountain peak we’ve ever experienced.

How to Find Your Joy

How to Find Your Joy

Ecclesiastics 3:4 reminds us that for all of us, there most certainly is a time to weep. Even still, the fruit of the spirit remains joy, and as God's children, we are not designed by Him to flourish if we nest in a constant state of negative emotions.  In this podcast, Cindy shares some fresh, practical approaches to help listeners find and better sustain that quiet, contented, confident feeling and sense of well-being that we call joy.

This podcast was recorded at the 2023 Ladies Seminar hosted by the women attending the Wesley Chapel Church of Christ in Florida. Looking for a congregation in this area?  I invite you to visit their website to begin to get to know this lovely church family at www.wesleychapelchurchofchrist.org

Cindy's Ladies' Lecture at the 2023 Florida College Lectures in Temple Terrace, Florida

Cindy's Ladies' Lecture at the 2023 Florida College Lectures in Temple Terrace, Florida

In the summer of '79 Cindy went to a summer camp hosted by Florida College and came home having decided she’d attend the college the following year after high school graduation to find a preacher to marry. But then she met a man named Mark Dunagan who cold-turkied his vices on their first date, was baptized a few weeks later and immediately began studying to become a preacher of the gospel. They were married four months after they met during Christmas break of Cindy’s senior year of high school, then spent the next 43 years raising three children and teaching and preaching for two congregations in the Northwest, until July of 2020 when they tossed their big white cat in their big black class B van and set out on a quest to visit and encourage 100 conservative churches of Christ around the country. As they traveled, they shared God’s truths with the souls we met, gave away copies of Cindy's book Your Fresh Start at every opportunity, gathered Biblically sound, inspiring ideas for growing the Kingdom of Heaven then shared those ideas within the stories of their travels on their blog NomadsYouAndi.com --- stories that are on track to soon be published in a book called 100 Churches later this summer.

Florida College invited Cindy to come share some of the inspiring highlights of their journey for the women attending the 2023 Florida College Lecture Series entitled "A Life Worthy of The Gospel". Cindy's lecture was entitled "Together Building God's Most Luminous Temple: A Nomad's Encouraging Observations After Visiting 100 churches of Christ", and that video is viewable here: https://youtu.be/3DfHvux7GFA

More Spiritual Encouragement for Sisters In Christ

More Spiritual Encouragement for Sisters In Christ

In this podcast, Cindy builds on her thoughts at the 2023 Florida College Lectures in Temple Terrace, Florida by using real-life examples of the Christian women she met all over the country while living nomadically for 2 1/2 years. Be encouraged by what these women have been able to overcome because their confidence was in God, learn what they do to build that kind of spiritual muscle, and be inspired by the beautiful ways they express their love for Christ and one another. Truly, the power God has given women to change the world for good still exists today.

More Power to You, Young Christian Friends!

More Power to You, Young Christian Friends!

Many of the people most enthusiastic and full of questions about our Vanlife are often college-aged, so it was not a surprise to us when the analytics of the Nomads You and I Podcast revealed most of our listeners are between the ages of 18 and 22. In this heartfelt podcast, Cindy shares some ideas with young Christians to inspire them to find their own unique ways to give their travels through life a spiritual focus, stay where the light is,  love people like God loves people, and thrive in every way.

What amazing opportunities might God be up to in each of your lives?  It’s exciting to think about as our hearts are so full of hope for your future. We stand with you, young Christian, and are so in favor of your bright future.

Thank You, Brothers!

In this podcast, Mark and Cindy express their gratitude to some of the men of faith they've been inspired by before, during, and after their  2 1/2 year Nomad Quest, and what we can all learn by their outstanding examples of taking to heart God's directive to "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all you do be done in love." 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Counting Sheep: A Podcast About Nature To Help Quiet Your Mind Before Sleep.

Every podcast we record at Nomads You And I, is intended to help you in both small and deep ways. We want to make a difference for good in the world and in the lives of individuals. I meet many people who have trouble falling asleep, or who wake in the middle of the night with a racing mind. On a very foundational level, good sleep is of course essential to accomplish what is put before you to the glory of God. And since I’ve been helped by podcasts intended to put me back to sleep, I thought I’d create one unlike those I’ve heard, that will combine both what divinely inspired and uninspired lovers of nature have said around one of the most beautiful things one can consider before sleep, and that is the handiwork of God.

Slaying The Dragon

In a world that calls evil good and good evil, chugs down the poison of sin like there’s no tomorrow, and is thus fettered by chains of its own forging, what’s the divine plan to free ourselves from the misery of moral poverty and wickedness? In this podcast, Cindy presents the Creator’s instructions for what dragon slayers can do to slay the dragon of sin.

Imagine Christianity minus the entertainment shows, the hypocrisy and the jockeying for positions of power within the complex network of denominational organizations.  What would Christianity look like minus every man-made rule and human tradition imposed these last 2000 years of church history? What would be left is the original, simple, pre-denominational (even pre-Catholic) Christianity that Mark and Cindy will discuss in this podcast.

Human Nature: How To Get Out Of Our Own Way

Human Nature: How To Get Out Of Our Own Way

In Christianity, we understand that God created humans upright (Ecclesiastes 7:29), but we “have sought out many devices.” Throughout life, there is a war within us between a spirit that is willing and a flesh that is weak, and ultimately we either choose to remain the “natural man” who self-destructs, or we will choose to reach our full potential by becoming the “spiritual man” God intends and longs for us to be. In this podcast, Cindy considers both divine and human observations about what so easily “comes natural” to us humans, and how God says we can get out of our own way in our pursuit of spiritual maturity.

Why I Choose Christianity

Why I Choose Christianity

Jesus Christ adamantly claims in John 14:6 “ “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” Jesus did not say He was “one way” to the Father, but that He is “THE way” to the Father.  Jesus did not say He was not one of many sources of divine truth, that He is THE source of truth― the final say that trumps all other voices.  Unlike most other world religions, one of the clearest truths presented in Scripture is that Christianity is NOT one path among many toward being united with God. In a world growing increasingly hostile toward Christianity, many wonder, "Is there objective evidence that Christianity is the one true religion?" In this podcast, Cindy shares the evidence she felt too convicting to turn a blind eye and describes her own journey toward choosing Christianity and how that decision has impacted her life.

10 Reasons Why We Oppose Abortion

According to World Health Organization, there are an estimated 40 to 50 million abortions each year around the world, approximately 125 thousand each day. In the United States, nearly half of all pregnancies are unintended; four-tenths of these are terminated by abortion, leading to over 3,000 abortions daily. 22% of all pregnancies in America (excluding miscarriages) are ended by abortion. At present, a womb is the single most dangerous place for a person to be. In this podcast, Cindy shares the audio recording from her live online program, Older Women Likewise, called Why We Oppose Abortion.

2nd Peter: A Bird's Eye View

When it comes to geography, some things can only be comprehended from a bird's-eye view.

If the Scriptures were a physical mountain, there would be certain specifics you could only come to know by seeing it from the sky while quickly flying over it: How it looks as a whole, how it compares to the landscape around it, etc. These quick overviews help explain the overall themes and layout of the Bible and can in that way be useful.

This podcast is Mark and Cindy's first "flyover conversation". It's about the book of 2nd Peter and is in preparation of slowing "hiking" that book phrase by phrase in this new series of NomadsYouAndi podcasts called Scripture Hikes.

How To Tell Right From Wrong

How To Tell Right From Wrong

You’ve likely lived long enough to see with your own eyes what happens when the “to each his own ''philosophy reigns, that is, when mankind attempts to create his own truth rather than following the one true divinely appointed standard of right and wrong. It's hard to miss the reality that the degree to which a society moves toward the moral standard given to us by the mind of God through His inspired writers of the New Testament, is the degree to which chaos, turmoil, and suffering is replaced with peace, and productivity, and prosperity. The scientific laws of physics that so efficiently sustain every living in God’s creation, are surely evidence that His absolute moral laws, when followed, will work just as well as ... gravity.

An Interview with Sarah Gentry of Project Virtue about the Power of Mindset and How to Cold Turkey Complaining

An Interview with Sarah Gentry of Project Virtue about the Power of Mindset and How to Cold Turkey Complaining

In the spring of 2016, a young woman named Sarah wanted to do something to help this broken world full of hurt, pain, and darkness. She knew she was not the only one who longed for "something or someone to remedy this pain and bring some kind of joy into our world". So at the age of 14, Sarah Gentry set out to create "Project Virtue" with a clear mission to inspire girls to take a stand for Christ.  "I wanted to point other teen girls to the One that would bring them the joy and fulfillment we are all longing for, and to equip them with the knowledge and inspiration to share this with others."

A lot has happened since Project Virtue began. Sarah has now earned her degree in elementary education and is teaching. Sarah loves life. "When I’m not working or blogging, I love spending time with my family, running, reading, and playing music. I may have a slight coffee addiction and love trying new coffee everywhere I go. I love sunflowers and sunrises and bluegrass music."

I met Sarah at a Ladies' Bible Study I taught to the women of congregation in Casey, Illinois who invited me to come to speak to them on the topic of how to gain spiritual strength before a storm of life comes, and what we can do to endure during the midst of those darkest days. Between sessions, Sarah approached me to introduce herself and her amazing mission and invited me to share some of my ideas along these lines on her Project Virtue podcast. I was so encouraged by her vision, I was eager to oblige, and this recording is the result of that invitation.

If you'd like to hear more from Sarah, head over to her blog to read more, and check out her podcasts to be encouraged by a young woman who proves one can both have the gentle and quiet spirit that is so precious to God (1 Peter 3:4) and be every bit a warrior princess.

A Conversation With Pamella Antaya About Life, Love, Purpose and Skydiving.

For years, we Nomads have been collecting the best conversation questions we can find, wherever we can find them! Our collection has grown to 450 questions and we've begun to call the collection "Good Questions!" We take these questions wherever we go, and in this podcast, Pamella Antaya answers a few of them from her own unique perspective, including:
What do you remember about your childhood that helped form who you are?
What big and little things do you love?
What do you think is overrated in your generation and what do you think is underrated?
What fuels you to meet your challenges day-to-day as well as the bigger challenges of life?
What do you think is the greatest problem in the human race?
If you could give one piece of advice to the next generation what would it be?
What is something you do every day that gives you a small amount of joy?
What amazes you?
In one sentence what do you believe is the secret to a meaningful life? Pamella's answers give great reason to feel optimistic about the spiritual clarity that always helps young Christian women face with boldness any future uncertainties.

The Clean Slate of a New Year

The Clean Slate of a New Year

New Year's Day is my favorite holiday of all! Not so much because I’m making a new promise to myself, but more because of the opportunity it offers to refocus on where I know I can do better. It just feels like a clean slate.

In this podcast, we explore the models in scripture, both that inspire us to look back in such a way that helps us move forward with profound spiritual growth, as well as those Biblical examples that teach us how NOT to look back on our lives.

The podcast concludes with some suggested resources for spiritual training to make the year to come all it can be!

How To Enter The Gate And Stay On The Path That Leads To Everlasting Life

How To Enter The Gate And Stay On The Path That Leads To Everlasting Life

Having recently visited the home of poet, Robert Frost in Derry, New Hampshire, I walked a number of the beautiful autumnal little trails on his property that inspired his famous lines, “I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”

I've always been able to relate to those words on a spiritual level, having opted in my teen years to take our Lord's advice to “Enter through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.  How narrow is the gate and difficult the way that leads to life, and there are few who find it!" (Matthew 7:13-14)

Entering that narrow gate and traversing that challenging terrain on the narrow way has, at times, been anything but easy, but the views from that upward climb are not to be missed, and I've not for a moment regretted that decision made so many years ago!

In this podcast, Cindy shares:

What God says about how to enter that blessed gate and remain on that narrow way for the long haul.

What hard things might you likely encounter along the way and what can you do to build the spiritual muscle you'll need to cope with those challenges?

How does God help us successfully walk this path to everlasting life and what can we do to prepare the hearts of our young children to hike this ultimate trail?

Cross Country Christianity: Our conversation with an inspirational communications professor, Kenny Embry, Ph.D.

Cross Country Christianity: Our conversation with an inspirational communications professor, Kenny Embry, Ph.D.

Looking to focus your heart and mind on things more true, positive, and encouraging? Alongside your daily time talking and listening to God,  Kenny Embry's podcasts may be just what you are looking for! I'm learning a lot myself. Kenny is a professor of communication, father of four, and husband. He lives in the Tampa area with his wife and four children and has a fabulous podcast called Balancing the Christian Life that helps Christians be better Christians. It focuses on practical ways to improve relationships with each other and God, and what it means to be a digital disciple. Visit Kenny's website at https://www.balancingthechristianlife.com

Recently we had a conversation with Kenny about what it's like to love and serve God and His family nomadically. Below is how he described our conversation.  Enjoy!

So how well do you think the church is doing across the country? It's easy to assume it's either going well or going poorly based on what you see where you are. But Mark and Cindy Dunagan have a pretty clear answer after visiting over 50 congregations in the last year. They are also podcasters and bloggers who are on a mission to visit 100 churches to see what works and what doesn't. I think you'll be interested to hear what they've learned from Christians who live their faith at the local congregation.

Here's their bio:

Mark and Cindy Dunagan live nomadically in a van and are on a quest to visit and encourage 100 conservative churches of Christ around the country to gather Biblically sound, inspiring ideas for growing the Kingdom of Heaven. They share those ideas on their blog NomadsYouAndi.com --- ideas that are on track to be published in a book called 100 Churches.

Mark has been preaching since his conversion in 1979 and continues to do so as they travel. He currently participates bi-weekly in the live online program Answering Religious Error.

His audio sermons are available at BeavertonChurchofChrist.net and his commentaries at MarkDunagan.com.  Cindy is the author of Your Fresh Start (available at OneStone.com), is the host of the podcast Nomads You And I, and co-host of the live online program Older Women Likewise.

Creating Beautiful Mentorship Relationships Sister To Sister

Creating Beautiful Mentorship Relationships Sister To Sister

Older Christian women are instructed by God in Titus 2:3-5 to "...be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored."

In this podcast, Cindy answers some questions to help sharpen the skills of women who mentor so their influence is more likely to bear beautiful fruit in the lives of other women they help. This podcast is also very much for younger women who want to make the most of being mentored.

What are some ways we older women can make ourselves more approachable to younger women?

What are some things we can do to build relationships with one another?

What are some ways we can encourage without making the younger women feel criticized or defensive?

How do we encourage if we don’t feel we have done the best job with our children?

What if we feel unqualified to offer advice?

How can we encourage conversations that may be on a more intimate level --- how do we make ourselves approachable for any type of questions and conversation?

Should we offer advice if they are not asking for it and if so, how do we offer advice if the younger woman is not asking for it?

There's Bread For The Hungry Souls Considering Ditching The New Age Movement

There's Bread For The Hungry Souls Considering Ditching The New Age Movement

If you are involved in the New Age Movement, honestly, I think there's a good chance we'd hit it off. I realize the worldview of each "New Ager" is a little different, but in general, here's what I often admire in the souls within your circle: You desire a better world, and I love that. You desire to be a good person. How beautiful! You desire to develop a spiritual view of life, and that’s admirable since we are indeed all souls clothed in bodies.
As we live Nomadically, we spent some time in Sedona. While there, we overheard or engaged in conversations more than once among New Agers who are questioning the movement and reexamining what they expected in terms of deep peace, mental health, spiritual healing, and general wellness, that they have not found within this worldview.
My heart goes out to these hungry souls, so while I’ve nothing personally to gain for what I'll share in this podcast, at least I'll know that I’ve done what I can to help your soul find the "bread" you’ve been looking for. As someone has once said “We are all mere beggars showing other beggars where to find bread” and that’s exactly what this podcast is about today: A labor of love dedicated to the hungry souls who have been deceived, and pulled away from the one true God, by the New Age Movement.

12 Rules For Life: An Antidote To Chaos (From A Christian Perspective)

12 Rules For Life: An Antidote To Chaos (From A Christian Perspective)

During the busy year Mark and Cindy were preparing to live nomadically, on Sunday afternoons, Mark would carve a couple of hours out of his day to drive into Portland, Oregon to join in on a Meet-up with a diverse group of individuals at Portland State University to discuss Jordan Peterson and his life-changing book 12 Rules For Life: An Antidote to Chaos. The conversations were both intense and fascinating, and the book itself remains a favorite that Mark often recommends, especially to young people just beginning to build their lives.
In this podcast, Mark and Cindy discuss the book from their personal Christian perspectives and what the scriptures (which are the ultimate antidote to chaos) say on some of the concepts Peterson discusses.

The Screwtape Letters: A Conversation With Julie Crones About How To Overcome Our More Subtle Temptations

The Screwtape Letters: A Conversation With Julie Crones About How To Overcome Our More Subtle Temptations

“...in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.” (2 Corinthians 2:11)
Wouldn’t it be an incredible find if you looked down on the ground and there was Satan’s playbook? What if you picked it up, looked inside, and saw what kind of luring temptations he had in store for you this week, what slow series of events this ultimate enemy was going to try to use against you to weaken you one little step at a time- and how he was going to twist your strengths into vices.
What if you could eavesdrop on his diabolical conversations regarding just how he was planning to tear down what you have worked so long to build in your relationship with your children, by planting subtle misunderstandings and miscommunications he can use against you? Such a find would surely give you an advantage. With your eyes now wide open you would be able to notice when he was using opportunities right and left. With this awareness, you’d be better able to cut him off at the pass, and ultimately, to conquer.
In 1942 brilliant English author CS Lewis, wrote The Screwtape Letters, a book that cannot help but change the way you view your adversary. In this fictional story, Screwtape, an experienced tempter, writes a series of thirty-one short letters to his nephew Wormwood. Wormwood is a novice in securing damnation for the soul, or as this book calls the soul a “patient”, assigned to him. His Uncle Screwtape writes these letters to “enlighten” him in all the best “tools of the trade”.
Because these schemes are 100% real, no work of fiction will sober your spirit in the battle for your salvation, and the salvation of those within your sphere of influence, than this little paperback.
What are the best ways to undermine the faith of those who want to draw near to God? How can a skilled tempter use the qualities in human nature and bend them toward sin? Screwtape has all the answers.

In what situations do you find it most difficult to have command of yourself?
In what aspect of your life would employing a higher level of self-control most improve your life?
Heschel noted, “Self-respect is the root of discipline: The sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself.”
In this podcast, we will explore how one acquires self-control, what is it about self-control that makes our lives so much more spiritually beautiful, and what God says are some of the upsides of having command of oneself, and ten practical tips to help direct our minds toward a better life through self-control.

Walking Humbly With Our God: The Beauty of Humility

Walking Humbly With Our God: The Beauty of Humility

God has placed humility as one of the most foundational qualities for His children to learn. When Colossians 3:12-14 says “... as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, etc.” we learn that humility is not something we are born with, but rather it is something we choose or do not choose to put on. Humility is so valuable that it is at very the heart of our relationship with God and even allows the High and Exalted One to dwell with us (Isaiah 57:15).
In this podcast, reasons will be presented to choose to put on humility, for without “putting on” humility, and the other qualities in Colossians 3:12-14 we become spiritually bared --- our souls exposed and vulnerable to the forces of evil. We will explore what God says genuine humility looks like in action, what it does in conflict, and the blessings God promises to those who chose to humble themselves under His mighty hand,

Surviving The Loss of Two Full-term Babies: Our Story

Surviving The Loss of Two Full-term Babies: Our Story

Jamie Anderson has said, “Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.”
I find this a beautiful quote, yet I'd like to suggest that perhaps love always has "a place to go". On some sad occasions, love doesn't "go" where you had planned, but during those sad occasions, when you are able, lift your grieving eyes, and look around. You will see all kinds of souls upon whom to pour out your love, and this is the most beautiful way to not waste your pain.
Side Note: It takes some discretion to choose which stories to share, but we thought this topic too important for hurting hearts, so this recording is a labor of love to those who are suffering from a similar loss.
Our hearts go out to you.

God Is Opposed To The Proud, But Gives Grace To The Humble

God Is Opposed To The Proud, But Gives Grace To The Humble

During the seven years I volunteered as a domestic violence resource advocate for a police department and a victim advocate for a second police department and more briefly at Door To Grace, a faith-based organization that helped young women exiting sex trafficking, most (not all) of the time I was called out to help, I'd be running to be by the side of those caught up in the pain and consequences of being “sexually reckless". My motivation was because I love the souls of the sexually reckless very much. And while it's easier to turn a blind eye to the self-destruction of others, Jesus said, "Happy are those whose hearts are pure, for they shall see God" (Matthew 5:8). This podcast was recorded for a similar reason: because when the sexually reckless repent, they can see God.
On a personal note, I've been happily married over forty years now to a man who was once sexually reckless. The night we met, he "cold-turkey-ed" that lifestyle in a moment and sees that decision he made to humble himself and submit to God's laws on the matter (and all other matters) as the best decision of his life. He will talk a bit in this podcast about his perspective at the time, and we hope others will be inspired to do what is best for their souls, minds and bodies in this, as well as all other areas of life. There is hope for everyone, and though we don't know you, we are genuinely "for" you, because we are "for" the victory of every eternal soul that is so precious to God.

Ten Reasons Why I Reject Militant Feminism

Ten Reasons Why I Reject Militant Feminism

If you believe it matters how women are treated, realize this: You just acknowledged there is good and evil - for there cannot be absolute truth without a truth giver, who is God. The fact that He most definitely exists has been virtually shouted by the whole creation into every infinitely complex sensory organ you have (your eyes your ears and all the rest) ever since the first day you were born on this blue planet (that, by the way, literally circles around a ball of fire next to a moon that literally moves the sea!!!) Oh, there is a God and the good news is that you were made in His image and that is why you have this beautiful desire to oppose injustice and any other vice. God has put within you a deep desire to fight injustice but sometimes that fire gets misdirected and can actually result in hurting others.
What does God's existence have to do with a podcast on feminism? Everything. It is so true that “Nothing, absolutely nothing, has a more direct bearing on the moral choices made by individuals or the purposes pursued by society than belief or disbelief in God. Personal and national destinies are inextricably bound to this issue. It is not accidental that the key issues of the day that are felt with deep emotion and conviction, whether it be the issue of sexual orientation and practice, or life in the fetal stage, sooner or later filter down to whether there is a God, and if so, has he spoken?”
God has spoken truths that can set you free, and many of them relate to clarifying the erroneous, and culture-destroying platforms of militant feminism.
As a point of clarification: If the following ideas are all you mean by feminism --- I am with you:
Three cheers for you and everyone else who simply wants women to succeed. I worked all my adult life toward that effort. In fact, the reason I’m about to say what I’m about to say is that I genuinely want women to succeed.
Three cheers for standing up for liberty, justice, and fairness for all. God long before any human rights movement of mankind came along, authored all three of those virtues. So when there is equality in the right to vote or to own property or equal pay for equal work we have finally honored what He told us to do all along. Because you see, when any of the virtues in scripture are lived out in our lives, it prevents every social injustice that is rooted in sin, whether that sin is favoritism, greed, or any other sin that leads to social chaos and injustice.
Three cheers for fighting domestic violence by teaching the world to treat one another the way you’d like to be treated. Honor and respect in every relationship is God’s idea too, long before it was ours. We just need to work God’s ideas to see the strain in every relationship evaporate.
Three cheers for laws against sexual harassment. God said all along that men were to view older women as mothers and younger women as sisters in 1 Timothy 5:2. That way, not only are women not sexually harassed, we’re actually defended by chivalrous men if need be. That kind of support and protection comes in handy, to say the least.
Three cheers for the ability to view oneself as the captain of one’s own soul, as a person willing to face and resolve any conflict – and to refuse to see oneself as a victim of man-made or biological circumstances – and that through hard work and discipline women can become strong. Yes. I agree. So again, if those ideas are all you mean by feminism --- I’m with you.
This podcast is an invitation to all Warrior Princesses to come over to the light side of the force. We need you over here.

If you were a pretty good kid, most of the time you did what they said, though probably not because you always "got" their reasons. It's a virtually universal experience: As we mature, the wisdom behind those reasons to become more clear .
The same can be said with regard to growing up spiritually under the wisdom of our Heavenly Father. The more I grow up, the more I get why God says "See to it you make EVERYTHING according "to the pattern" (Hebrews 8:5). What pattern? His pattern under the New Order (or Testament) we are to follow thoughtfully, with precision. The longer I live, I see more and more clearly the brilliance behind following God's divine patterns of morality both as we build our lives individually and as we build the spiritual temple, that is His church (1 Timothy 3:15) and even as we collectively build a culture.
This podcast is a personal record of what I've observed so far during my first five decades of life and my opinions of how we got to where we are today and where to find the path back to real progress.
"We all want progress. But progress means getting nearer to the place where you want to be. And if you have taken a wrong turning then to go forward does not get you any nearer. If you are on the wrong road progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive man. There is nothing progressive about being pig-headed and refusing to admit a mistake. And I think if you look at the present state of the world it's pretty plain that humanity has been making some big mistake. We're on the wrong road. And if that is so we must go back. Going back is the quickest way on." CS Lewis

The Second Mountain: Taking on Meaningful Challenges

The Second Mountain: Taking on Meaningful Challenges

The timing of the publication of this wonderful book by one of our favorite authors hit at the perfect time.  Mark had preached for a congregation we loved in Oregon for 28 years, but sensed it would be just as good for them to hear a new voice, as it would be for us to liquidate most of our possessions, live out of our Airstream van and find more souls to love and inspire. At the time of this recording, we had been living on the road for about six months and LOVE climbing this second mountain, meeting amazing people, finding service opportunities, doing things for the first time, speaking God's truths through new venues, and as a result, experiencing beauty hard to put into words.

In this podcast, we share our favorite takeaways from this book through the lens of our personal Christian perspectives. Do buy the book! Here is the description online:

"Every so often, you meet people who radiate joy—who seem to know why they were put on this earth, who glow with a kind of inner light. Life, for these people, has often followed what we might think of as a two-mountain shape. They get out of school, they start a career, and they begin climbing the mountain they thought they were meant to climb. Their goals on this first mountain are the ones our culture endorses: to be a success, to make your mark, to experience personal happiness. But when they get to the top of that mountain, something happens. They look around and find the view . . . unsatisfying. They realize: This wasn’t my mountain after all. There’s another, bigger mountain out there that is actually my mountain.

And so they embark on a new journey. On the second mountain, life moves from self-centered to other-centered. They want the things that are truly worth wanting, not the things other people tell them to want. They embrace a life of interdependence, not independence. They surrender to a life of commitment.

In The Second Mountain, David Brooks explores the four commitments that define a life of meaning and purpose: to a spouse and family, to a vocation, to a philosophy or faith, and to a community. Our personal fulfillment depends on how well we choose and execute these commitments. Brooks looks at a range of people who have lived joyous, committed lives, and who have embraced the necessity and beauty of dependence. He gathers their wisdom on how to choose a partner, how to pick a vocation, how to live out a philosophy, and how we can begin to integrate our commitments into one overriding purpose.

In short, this book is meant to help us all lead more meaningful lives. But it’s also a provocative social commentary. We live in a society, Brooks argues, that celebrates freedom, that tells us to be true to ourselves, at the expense of surrendering to a cause, rooting ourselves in a neighborhood, binding ourselves to others by social solidarity and love. We have taken individualism to the extreme—and in the process, we have torn the social fabric in a thousand different ways. The path to repair is through making deeper commitments. In The Second Mountain, Brooks shows what can happen when we put commitment-making at the center of our lives."

Your Life Has Meaning: Living for God's Glory: Part Three

Your Life Has Meaning: Living for God's Glory: Part Three

In this Three-Part Series, "Your Life Has Meaning: Living For God's Glory",  I offer foundational truths from the Scriptures that may be especially useful for those on the verge of becoming a Christian or are newly born again and have just embarked on their new life in the family of God.

Part One considers the incalculable blessings that await those who surrender their lives to God and serving Him for all the right reasons - love and gratitude - so we can go the distance.

Part Two of "Your Life Has Meaning: Living For God's Glory" considers what God says His expectations are of His children in our walk with Him--- things like the renewing of our minds, and how God earnestly desires, expects, and deserves from us a close relationship with Him, and that God expects those who are His to live a life of moral integrity, including the nourishing all of our relationships, including the relationships we have with our new church family.

Part Three of "Your Life Has Meaning: Living For God's Glory" looks at the blessings and responsibilities of being a member of a congregation, such as accomplishing God's life-beautifying work and being lovingly cared for by the shepherds, or elders of the church.

I conclude part three of this series with three beautiful promises from God for those who would serve Him:

"Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, you who have been borne by Me from birth and have been carried from the womb; even to your old age I will be the same, and even to your graying years I will bear you! I have done it, and I will carry you; and I will bear you and I will deliver you.” (Isaiah 46:3-4)  If this was God’s relationship with physical Israel, how much more do these intimate and comforting words belong to spiritual Israel, composed of those who have the faith of Abraham, whose hearts are fully God’s. What a connection! What nurturing! And what gratitude we have for His fatherly comfort. If you have not done so already, we invite you to become a blessed child of God.

In Psalm 16:11 David says to God  “In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”

To God’s faithful children, it will on the Final Day be said, " Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' (Matt 25:21-22)

This podcaster's prayer is that the listeners of this series will embrace God's will for their lives, find fulfillment in what He has created them to be and do and on the last day that they will hear those most precious words as they enter an eternity basking in the glory of His Holiness. Amen.

How true Elizabeth Stone's observation Making the decision to have a child - It's momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.”

In this podcast we will ponder some observations of both God and various writers on the topic of Motherhood, what to do to prepare our older children for adulthood and how to respond when a child rejects the love and wisdom of God. I prayed before recording this podcast and have asked God to give me the right words and that hearts of listeners will be open and encouraged, but more than that, I pray He make fruitful your efforts to raise children of virtue who are a light in this dark world and a force for only good.

Think On These Things

Think On These Things

God has given us the world’s most powerful recipe in Philippians 4:8--- a recipe, if followed, that is the answer to turning our lives around toward deep joy and fulfillment in fulfilling our purposes for which God created us, all starting from dwelling in a beautiful headspace.
"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things." Philippians 4:8
We must take some time to “Be still” in order to really “ know that” God is God (Psalm 46:10) --- after we’ve listened and talked to God every day, we must be still and ponder and during the day find other silent stretches of time --- undistracted to synthesize, integrate, assimilate, mentally digest and internalize everything God is also teaching us during both our Bible reading time as well as through our experiences, many of which are happening to us providentially --- experiences like these people we are encountering, these quotes we stumble upon at just the right moment, these challenges and testings. So here’s the thing: work alongside His providence and watch Him do “exceedingly, abundantly, beyond what you can imagine” things in your life.

Eternity He Has Set In Our Hearts

Eternity He Has Set In Our Hearts

Despite the uninspired voices around us pushing trendy things like reincarnation, God says in Hebrews 9:27 We only have one life--- the people die once, and after this comes judgment. That’s why Christians give it all they’ve got, because they live in the reality that only what's done for Christ will last. And as lovely as the most pleasant blessings are in this life, believers still kindle their desire for their TRUE country, and avoid mistaking the blessings of this life for heaven.

We have a divinely implanted awareness that the soul lives forever. From where did that awareness come? Ecclesiastes 3:11 says God has ... set eternity in our hearts and Jesus said He was going to prepare a place for us in (John 14:3)!

Let's explore some of what the scriptures say about eternity, and what our Creator says are the elements involved in ensuring a beautiful eternity with Him.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass And A Call To Spiritual Abolitionism

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass And A Call To Spiritual Abolitionism

**** Note: This podcast is for the ears of mature adults and those who will not be unduly disturbed by Frederick Douglas's accounts of the cruelties he witnessed. I decided to leave in some of the emotion that spontaneously waved over me during this recording, because I care more about being authentic with my listeners, than professionalism, and also prefer to grieve alongside my listeners at what also grieves the heart of our God, which is an honorable and even holy thing.
The parallel of physical slavery to spiritual slavery is obviously not my own, but is God's. "Although these false teachers promise such people freedom, they themselves are enslaved to immorality. For whatever a person succumbs to, to that he is enslaved." 2 Peter 2:19. While the parallel of physical slavery to spiritual slavery is a familiar one, what struck me during my recent reading of the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, was the uniformity of the manipulative techniques used by the both Civil War era exploiters of humanity and current users of people who sell and promote addictive sin to their own advantage.
In my work with police officers for years servicing personal victims of everything from domestic violence to a school shooting, I have seen firsthand the pain of being enslaved to alcohol, pornography, drugs, sex, violence, theft, and every other kind of enslaving addiction that ravages people's lives, but often is a "gain" for the drug dealer, pimp, or other inventor of evil. "For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites"(Romans 16:18) These precious souls need emancipation from the slavery of sin, for the slave driving enemy of soul is today as cruel as ever.
One notable difference between physical slavery and spiritual slavery, is that spiritual slavery is actually voluntary, and one chooses who will be one's master, either the master who will bring suffering and death or the Master who will bring freedom and eternal life. "Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness... For the outcome of those things is death. But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6).
When Christ makes us free, we are free indeed (John 8:36).

What God Says Happens The Day You Are Baptized

What God Says Happens The Day You Are Baptized

[Transcript provided for copying and pasting for your own use: No attribution necessary on anything I personally write or say. Just spread the love. :D]
Today, by choosing to be baptized, you show that you have received into your good heart, the seed of God’s word. Acts 2:41 “those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.”
Today you will be saved. 1 Peter 3:21 “ baptism now saves you -- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience -- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ..” Mark 16:16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.”
Today your sins will be washed away. Acts 22:16 "Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.”
Today at your baptism God promises your sins will be forgiven. Acts 2:38-39 “Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ‘For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.’"
Today when you arise from the waters of baptism, you will have a brand new, spotless life. Romans 6:3-8 “Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.”
Today when God removes your sins, He says those sins will be removed from you as the far as the East is from the West. “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us”. Psalm 103:12
Today you will clothe yourself with Christ. This means you will spend the rest of your life adding all the qualities and characteristics to your own life that make Christ so beautiful Galatians 3:27 “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”
Today you become as a bride to Christ. Christ will love you sacrificially as a good husband does his family. As you submit to His leadership, He in turn promises to save you, his bride. Ephesians 5:23 “For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.”
Like an Israelite fleeing through the parted Red Sea, today you flee from the wrath of God and enter the new promise land of freedom from slavery to sin and from Satan as a taskmaster. Matthew 3:7 “But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them... who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” 1 Corinthians 10:1-2 “For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.”
Today as you are baptized you will have pleased God in this righteous act, as Jesus pleased God at His own baptism. Matthew 3:15-17 “But Jesus answering said to him, ‘Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then he permitted Him. After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.’"
When we live a life of faithfulness, and all this remains ours. May we both grow day by day in our love for God and live our lives from this day on, in light of eternity.

I Have An Idea!

I Have An Idea!

In less than five minutes, learn the solution to much of what ails us:
It would raise the standard of living for the very poorest, and every taxpayer.
My idea would ensure that virtually every child has all the emotional, financial and spiritual advantages that come along with having both a mom and a dad.
It would eventually vacate orphanages.
My idea would remove the strain of the foster care system.
In fact, it would end child molestation and prevent every future case of sex trafficking and exploitation.
My idea would save us the $16 billion we spend annually treating the 20 million new STD infections. (Then we could put the savings to more research in curing heart disease, cancer and diabetes – the leading causes of death for around 3 million people every year!)
My idea could wipe out AIDS in one generation --- an expenditure that averages $380,000 per case over a lifetime and the new 40,000 cases annually.
My idea would unintentionally result in the replacement of every strip club and porn shop from coast to coast with businesses that actually improve our communities.
Businesses could recoup the estimated $16.9 billion in productivity they presently lose when they think their employees are working, but they are really watching porn.
My idea would even lower the divorce rate.
It would end the abortion debate because my idea would virtually end abortion.
The positive ripple effects of my idea are immeasurable and incalculable.

Enjoying A More Intimate Prayer Life

Enjoying A More Intimate Prayer Life

Conversation is the fertilizer of intimacy. The honest and open exchange of the things closest to our hearts is what builds closeness. We know it to be true. We have experienced it in our marriages, we have found such to be the case with our best friends, and we know the more our children confide in us, the closer our connection. It is no different in our relationship with the Lord. Conversation fosters and sustains intimacy when God speaks to us through His word (Hebrews 1:1-2), and we speak to God in prayer (1 Peter 5:7).
The Psalms can be a wonderful tool for drawing closer to God than you have ever drawn before. Penned by the shepherd-king David, Psalm 103 is a song of praise for the Lord’s benevolence toward those who love and fear Him. God called David “a man after my own heart”, and we have in this Psalm just what such a heart sounds like word for word. As David pours forth his heart, I invite you open to Psalm 103 now as you listen to this podcast, so you can practice with me in responding, from the heart, to the inspired phrases of the Psalms.
My hope is that this form of prayer may become to you a new source of blessing and closeness with the God who so adores you. Truly, “He is intimate with the upright” (Proverbs 3:32).

Death By Moral Relativism

Death By Moral Relativism

Relative truth creates chaos and anarchy on every level. The firmness of the Laws of nature is evidence that there is firmness in the Laws of good and evil. Every police department enforces laws of behavior based upon what it has determined to be destructive, because, in practice no one is actually a moral relativist. No one has ever really lived by moral relativism because every human, by nature, realizes injustice is evil, especially when someone they love is treated unjustly.
It is illogical to think that in a universe governed by laws as mathematically mind boggling and artistic as ours has no absolute moral laws. Every day the laws of nature are so predictable we can send people into space. Everyone acknowledges Newton's law of universal gravitation and every other physical scientific law. This universal acceptance of physical scientific comes in handy moment by moment, for example around the standards of measure and weight. Because of our all acknowledging truth in the physical world, we are able to trade fairly. No one says “What is a pound to you?” “How long do you feel your inch is?” On a planet like this, certainly there also exists absolute moral truths, especially given the fact that when we disregard the moral laws given by the Creator of the universe, peace and beauty with sexually transmitted diseases, cruelty, addictions, drunk driving, stealing, laziness, murder, violence, adultery, divorce, lying, abortion, cheat, greed, pollution, rape and more.
To the degree a culture lives life according the Bible, virtually every social problem evaporates. The collective result of living by the New Testament would be that crime would disappear, healthcare would be more unburdened to fund finding more cures, the economy would soar because productivity would go through the roof, security systems would be obsolete, the Internet safe, prisons emptied, children cherished, the earth kindly stewarded. Our national budget, freed from the financial costs created by social problems that result from sin, could use the savings to accomplish more benevolent humanitarian efforts all over the world.

A Handful of Tips for Raising Teenagers

A Handful of Tips for Raising Teenagers

We all want the children we love to do the right things for the right reasons for their own wellbeing and bright futures. When they don’t, anger, empty promises, empty warnings, and threats don’t help. Anger and frustration only feed misbehavior. What DOES heal hearts and help kids do the right thing for the right reason? Human relationships that feel safe and build trust. And HOW is trust built? This podcast will dig into that question and more as I share the wisdom that I gained from a training I was given in the course of helping an organization that was assisting young girls exiting trafficking in Portland, Oregon. I learned a lot and hope you will find their ideas I share with you today as enlightening and helpful as I did.

Knowing When To Shelter Children

Knowing When To Shelter Children

Our children will not gain strength if we protect them from such things as...
Knowing how much you love them
The acknowledgment of your own imperfections and mistakes
Challenges
Hard work
Decision Making
Sacrifice
Necessary Confrontations/Standing Alone
Consequences
Noticing the consequences of sin in other’s lives
False teachings (Compare instead what man says to what God says in scripture)
People from other ethnicities or cultures or other income levels
People who are grieving or people who are dying
...and of course wise parents much mindfully select when it is safe and compassionate in the above circumstances to bear the weight of the situation...
But does God recommend exposing our kids to the evils of the world in order to somehow build some kind of immunity?” Actually, God says “Do not be deceived: "Bad company corrupts good morals." 1 Corinthians 15:33 and “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Proverbs 13:20
Of course, no amount of sheltering takes away the free will of a child, but with some creativity, one can provide for their children a very active social life while putting forth our most conscientious efforts to provide an environment where souls can flourish.

The Truth About Judging

The Truth About Judging

When people repeat what The Judge (John 12:48) of our souls has said, those people are not judging. They are merely (and mercifully) letting you know you've got a boulder about to fall on your head. In fact, the people willing to be inconvenienced enough to tell you what you need to hear are, by far, the ones who love you most. Thank them for the correction. They are not the One who said such behavior is lethal. Those kindhearted enough to risk being verbally attacked for trying to lend a hand are essentially saying "I’m only telling you what the Judge has already said. The behavior has already been judged, and the sentence has been given; I care about you so I am trying to spare you the punishment.” I'm not judging or maligning you I am only telling you what the judge has said on the topic so that Satan cannot malign (Revelation 12:10) your life.
Before a doctor can administer a cure for your deadly disease, both the doctor and you, as the patient, must acknowledge the sickness. When the prescription saves your life, you owe your doctor profound gratitude. How much more the person attempting to snatch you from eternal fire so that instead you can experience eternal pleasure in the glorious presence of your Heavenly Father.
Let’s just admit what’s going on here: Satan wants a world where it is a social faux pas to call a spade a spade. If it is wrong to say someone is doing something wrong, fewer people’s sins get "diagnosed" and fewer people’s sins are "cured" by repentance. Don't fall for it.

What God Says About The Value of Sexual Purity

What God Says About The Value of Sexual Purity

In this first part of my three-part series in support of sexual purity, we explore many of the Holy Spirit breathed scriptures on the matter to better understand WHY God says this pursuit is so incredibly valuable for our spiritual wellbeing.
Part two in this series offers practical strategies useful in the pursuit of holiness and can be found in the episode entitled 18 Things To Do When Men Make You Want To Be Shortsighted.
Part three will offer some tips to help singles figure out if the chemistry they are feeling is blinding them or if it is the kind of chemistry that can be a wonderful part of a lifelong relationship. Look for this episode under the title "Is it love or is it lust?"
Bonus Track: To get an idea of what the world would like like if everyone pursued sexual purity, listen to the very short podcast entitled "I Have An Idea".

18 Things To Do When Men Make You Want To Be Shortsighted

18 Things To Do When Men Make You Want To Be Shortsighted

In a world where some thought leaders are aggressively promoting sexual recklessness, many counter-culture girls who've listened to what God says on the matter and have observed with their own eyes the vast ripple effects of sexual recklessness have come to the realization that sexual purity is best for the well-being of their souls, their bodies and their minds. They've set their standards in a place that is way different than the rest of the self- destructive modes of the world at present. It's not about shame. It's not about being appreciative of this gift God has given. It's about considering sex as so incredibly holy, symbolic, sacred and priceless that they save all sexual experiences for their soul mate for life --- their husband.
More power to you, Girls. In support of you, today I'm going to share 18 practical strategies help you meet that goal.
Side note: Here's an Idea: If everyone chose this, it would raise the standard of living for the very poorest, and every taxpayer. (Then we could put the savings to research in curing heart disease, cancer and diabetes – the leading causes of death for around 3 million people every year!) My idea could wipe out AIDS in one generation --- an expenditure that averages $380,000 per case over a lifetime and the new 40,000 cases annually. My idea would unintentionally result in the replacement of every strip club and porn shop from coast to coast with businesses that actually improve our communities. Noble businesses could recoup the estimated $16.9 billion in productivity they presently lose when they think their employees are working, but they are really watching porn. My idea would even lower the divorce rate. It would end the abortion debate because my idea would virtually end abortion. The positive ripple effects of my idea are immeasurable and incalculable. My idea is this: What if instead of using sex recreationally like it’s nothing, we considered it so incredibly holy, symbolic, sacred and priceless that we only had sexual experiences with our spouse, and further, saved all unprotected sex for when we were actually planning a family together. Sounds crazy, right? It WOULD be crazy… if we were merely animals. But the thing is, we are actually… human. beings. And this idea has worked quadtriplezillion times throughout history and makes for a culture beautifully safe and happy, especially when coupled with the other virtues the Inventor of humanity mandates (like gentleness over violence, humility over pride, contentment over greed). My idea works because it wasn’t my idea. It is the Creator’s idea (Romans 13; 1 Corinthians 7). But despite the fact I’ve probably never had a brilliant original idea in my life, some would not have read this far if they knew I'd be talking about His brilliant idea, because they've stopped listening to Him......Which is exhibit A of why we are where we are today --- on the brink. God has all the answers. We just need to work them.

How To Talk & Listen To God

How To Talk & Listen To God

This podcast has three parts: First we explore a fresh idea to bring order and enrichment to your prayer life. Next, I discuss all the blessings we can expect when we daily take the time to talk and listen to God. And then we wrap up with some specific ways to approach Bible study that even the most devoted student of the Scriptures may not have considered.
Truly, the key to a fulfilling life begins with listening to God and living out what we are reminded of during those times of daily reading His scriptures and pouring out to Him our deepest prayers. It’s immeasurable how many problems this practice equips us to better meet every life challenge.
I would love to see what the church would look like if we all recommitted ourselves to being entirely devoted to prayer. Can you imagine? Prayer so changes things.

The Bonding Nature of Sacrifice

The Bonding Nature of Sacrifice

Napoleon wisely observed, “We attach ourselves more readily to those whom we have benefited than to our benefactors.” Indeed, not much builds love and loyalty better than service and sacrifice, even in our children! We do those souls we shepherd a favor when we help them discover how good it feels to give, and how through sacrifice, loving bonds are woven.

Bible Answers To Baptism Questions

Bible Answers To Baptism Questions

What does baptism accomplish? More than many realize, that is if you take God's word for it. He's the expert, we figure, so we've opted to believe everything He says on the matter and encourage others to do the same.
1 Peter 3:21 “baptism now saves you -- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience -- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ..”
Who will be saved?
Mark 16:16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.”

What is baptism for? To how many generations is this promise given? Does time change conditions of salvation?
Acts 2:38-39 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 "For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself."

What did Paul still have three days after believing on Jesus Christ, and how was he told to remedy the situation?
Acts 22:16 "Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.”

What must we do to enter the kingdom of God? And how important is it to be a part of the kingdom of God?
John 3:5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 15:24 then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power.

How does God harmonize the concept of baptism for the forgiveness of sins, with the principle of not being saved by our own righteous deeds?
Titus 3:5 “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit…”

Are we not saved by faith alone?
James 2:24 “You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. (Verse 20 But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? Verse 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.”

Is it Pharisaical to preach baptism, as John did (Luke 3:3), or to reject baptism? How did the Pharisees reject God’s purpose for themselves?
Luke 7:29-30 29 When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged God's justice, having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God's purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John.

Is there ever an occasion when one should be baptized a second time, for example when one comes to a better Biblical understanding of what baptism is truly for?
Acts 19:3-5 3 “And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus." When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

To be biblically baptized what requirement must be met? Can infants meet this requirement?
Acts 8:36-38 “As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, "Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?" And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may."

What To Say To Those In Despair Unto Death

What To Say To Those In Despair Unto Death

If you are moments from taking your life at least call 800-273-8255 now to hear about your other options. There are always other options. Always.
This is a situation. It is here. It is passing. It is here today. It may not be here tomorrow or later in your future.
What matters has not been lost: An opportunity to be spiritually reborn.
You were never created to live depressed, defeated, guilty, ashamed or unworthy. You were born for victory through Jesus Christ. Work alongside Him toward transformation. Together with God, you can turn your wounds into wisdom. You’ve much to look forward to. You were born for this.
"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all." Psalm 34:18-19
When you become a child of God, suddenly nothing happens TO you. When you become a child of God, everything that happens to you, happens FOR you. His promise is that “God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28)
"When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I." Psalm 61:2
You are so much more than your present situation.
Choose in this very moment to be reborn and then to appoint your reborn spirit, as your driver --- the servant chauffer of our soul.
"Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." Hebrews 4:16

Serendipity And Things That Make Us Go Hmmm...

Serendipity And Things That Make Us Go Hmmm...

Weird things happen. Like, amazing things. Bizarre things too, occasionally. Then there's the little coincidental things, followed sometimes by the jaw dropping, "You've got to be kidding me" situations. So many curious things happen, that since 2010 I've been doing a Project 365, that is, taking at least one photo every day and captioning it (or writing an entire story). At the end of each year I print the thick 7X7 book out using software called Booksmart. It's fun and useful and therapeutic and worthwhile and as an author, I treasure both the process and the finished project. In creating this podcast, my Project 365 books have come in handy to help me recall some of the details of these sharable stories...
--- stories of things that have made us go, "Hmmm."
*** Note the serendipity on the cover art of this podcast. My friend Ray Ray noticed several days after she photographed me in Times Square, that there appears to be steam coming out of my happy foot. :D

Brenden Ashby: How Shall A Man Secure His Heart? : Part Four

Brenden Ashby: How Shall A Man Secure His Heart? : Part Four

Why are so many young people choosing sexual purify ? Each has their own combination of reasons. For some, they've come to understand that "...everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure." (1 John 3:3) They "Flee immorality because they realize "every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. " As believers, they accept that their "body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in them, whom they have from God, and that they are not their own. That they were bought with a price: and therefore glorify God in their body. (1 Corinthians 6:18-20]
With temptation so accessible, one can't help but greatly admire those who follow the ancient wisdom to "Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience." Colossians 3:2-6
Self-restraint makes for a lot to look forward to --- especially this, the ultimate of all anticipations: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. (Matthew 5:8) What experience could possibly top that?!
In this last of our four part podcast, Brenden Ashby offers both encouragement and guidance with practical ways to give yourself every advantage to gain victory. Brenden Ashby Discusses How We Can Honor Christ As Lord By Keeping Ourselves From Idols: Part Three

Brenden Ashby Discusses How We Can Honor Christ As Lord By Keeping Ourselves From Idols: Part Three

In a culture where people talk a lot about praying to "the universe" , my conversation with Brenden in this podcast was such a great refresher on where all our strength and hope resides: In the Creator of the Universe.
"For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen." Romans 1
“Thus says the LORD, "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind And makes flesh his strength, And whose heart turns away from the LORD. "For he will be like a bush in the desert And will not see when prosperity comes, But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness, A land of salt without inhabitant. "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD And whose trust is the LORD. "For he will be like a tree planted by the water, That extends its roots by a stream And will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green, And it will not be anxious in a year of drought Nor cease to yield fruit.” Jeremiah 17:5-8

The Sarah Who Considered Him Faithful: A Character Study From The Book of Genesis

The Sarah Who Considered Him Faithful: A Character Study From The Book of Genesis

There are several qualities highlighted in Sarah's life that women of God should aspire to with all our hearts. The first, is mentioned in Hebrews 11:11-14 "...Sarah ...considered Him faithful Who had promised." When Sarah considered God faithful ,she received the ability to conceive. It makes me wonder. What ability will we receive when we begin to trust whole-heartedly in God's reliability? In this podcast, we'll look deeper into the qualities of this woman, the wife of Abraham, who would father the nation of Israel, and through whom our Messiah would eventually be born according to a divine promise.

Dirt Bike Anthropology: One Female's Observations of Grown Up Men Who Take To The Trails

Dirt Bike Anthropology: One Female's Observations of Grown Up Men Who Take To The Trails

For years there was an event that all are invited to, but I’d be the only woman who’d show up. If I kept a low enough profile, it felt as though I was a fly on the wall or had somehow been given a rare pass to look into the keyhole of the mysterious and secret society of men. This opportunity occurred on day trips riding motorcycles and ATV’s through the mountains on the logging trails of the Tillamook Forest in Oregon. Often, when this happened, I would sit off to the side feeling somewhat like Jane Goodall or like Dian Fossey who studied gorilla groups (pardon the analogy) in the mountain forests of Rwanda. After one such trip, I collected some observations I thought may be of use, especially to women, in not only understanding men, but in following their lead in a few areas that I think we would do well to emulate. These are things that often occur naturally for them, that give them great advantages, and when applied to our own character would in no way detract from our sacred role as women. Granted the qualities observed in my “subjects” were those of spiritually mature Christian men, and obviously not all the qualities I observed are universal; yet the lessons remain the same.

How To Recognize Mr. Right

How To Recognize Mr. Right

This podcast offers some principles to help single Christian women choose wisely, and give single Christian men target areas of growth that will prepare them for a happier family life in the future.
Girlfriend --- You’ll marry a man with preferences and opinions quite at variance with your own. He will have his own mixed bag of quirks, weaknesses and regrets to overcome. That being said, outside of becoming part of the Bride of Christ, the second most significant decision one will make will be selecting this marriage partner. Our spouse will either be one of our greatest advantages or one of our greatest hindrances in not only experiencing a happy, fulfilling and meaningful life now, but more importantly, whether or not we overcome the world and obtain eternal life. All would agree that even when one must wait more years than first expected, Mr. Right is worth that wait. There may be some qualities you would add or even remove from the following advice. But regardless, let’s pray together for wisdom among the next generation as they make this life-changing decision.

Turning Your Wounds Into Wisdom

Turning Your Wounds Into Wisdom

Not many of us have experienced a tornado, but I'd venture most of us have experienced, out of nowhere, a touching down of chaos in our lives - a layoff, a diagnosis, a death, a crime, a betrayal, with no official warning from the National Weather Service, or anywhere else.
Some have concluded that God and pain cannot coexist and that because pain does exist, God must not.
I invite you today to rethink that assumption in this short podcast.

Snow Day

Snow Day

The years we lived in Oregon, I spent some time amidst the lovely and almost miraculous fluffy white powder at Timberline Lodge, Mt. Hood Meadows and Ski Bowl from time to time on Mount Hood. There are no words to explain the nature experienced riding a ski lift, especially at sunset. I say "experienced" because when you are there in person, and you are feeling the crisp, cold air, and inhaling the freshness, oh, man. All the way up our grand mountain on my last trip up-- when my buddy wasn't coaching me how to improve my snowboarding skills-- in my head and heart I was in full worship mode, pouring out my gratitude and wonder in prayer and song for everything that was coming into my senses. Truly, "The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge." Psalm 19:1-2

Let's Pray Earnestly

Let's Pray Earnestly

Prayer changes things. If there was ever an understatement, I just said it. There is A LOT of room for growth here. A lot. In fact, I sometimes wonder if prayer is the most underutilized tool in the box. When we remember the loving nature of God’s heart combined with His omnipotence and His directive to pray, the moments we spend daily in prayer are actually some of our most efficient moments of our day. Those with this realization become willing to “labor fervently ...in prayer” (Colossians 4:12) Thoughtful, earnest prayer is hard work, but God promises this: "The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much." (James 5:16) And Jesus said, "Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it shall be opened." Matthew 7:7-8
Visualize yourself approaching God on His throne, smiling upon you because you’ve taken to heart His words about your casting your cares at His feet. He’s there and is ready to ready to hear your heart. Praise Him, thank Him, Confess your sins and weaknesses, and pray with me this...

Heaven is Heaven

Heaven is Heaven

“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in the world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world...Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing...I must keep alive in myself the desire of my true country [Hebrews 11:16], which I shall not find till after death; I must never let it get snowed under or turned aside; I must make it the main object of life to press on to that other country and to help others to do the same.” C.S. Lewis
