Why Are Mental Health Conversations Important for Youth and Adults? with Marie Shanley (Mxiety)

The startling reality highlighted by the CDC is that mental, behavioral, and developmental disorders can take root in early childhood. In 2016, a staggering statistic revealed that 1 in 6 US children between the ages of 2 and 8 had been diagnosed with a mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder. And as we fast-forward to 2018-2019, the CDC further brought to light that 15.1% of adolescents aged 12-17 had experienced a major depressive episode within the previous year.

I'm thrilled to introduce our guest for today's episode, Marie Shanley, a distinguished author, researcher, and passionate mental health advocate, better known to many as "Mxiety" from her influential work streaming on Twitch.

Marie's journey is an inspiring one. As an adolescent, she encountered her own battles with mental health, lending her a firsthand understanding of the struggles that young people face. Through her advocacy efforts, she's been able to leverage her experiences to initiate important conversations and ignite change.

In this episode, Marie shares her insights on why it's crucial to start age-appropriate conversations about mental health early on. She delves into her personal story, reflecting on her own challenges and how they've motivated her to make a difference. Join us as we explore the power of dialogue in dismantling stigmas, and learn about practical ways to engage with our youth in conversations that can shape their mental well-being.

The conversation about mental health can't wait any longer, and neither should we. Tune in to this episode of "Normalize The Conversation" and join us in taking the necessary steps toward nurturing healthier minds and brighter futures.

What Does It Mean To Calm Your Breath and How Do You Do It? with Todd Steinberg

What Does It Mean To Calm Your Breath and How Do You Do It? with Todd Steinberg

Take a moment to pay attention to how you are breathing. Are you taking deep breaths or are your breaths shallow? Are your shoulders relaxed or are they lifted and tense? Shallow breathing can increase your heart rate while also making you vulnerable to a fight or flight situation. Deep breathing, on the other hand, can help reduce your heart rate and allow you to relax and feel more control over your thoughts and behaviors.

Welcome to Normalize The Conversation, I am your host Francesca Reicherter and today I am joined by Todd Steinberg, one of the founders of The Shift – a necklace to designed to help you take conscious, deep breaths.

Join us as Todd explores the power and importance of deep breathing while offering helpful tips to slow your breath and release stress and tension.

This coupled with the expectation of financial independence and mental strength is a contributing factor to an increased rate of mental health concerns among the male gender.

Human Trafficking: What Is It & What Can We Do? with Sophia Fisher

Human Trafficking: What Is It & What Can We Do? with Sophia Fisher

Trafficking is defined by The Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of commercial sex acts or labor or services using force, fraud, or coherence. According to the United Nations 2016 Report on Trafficking in Persons, women and girls make up 71% of all human trafficking. The Counter-Trafficking Data Collaborative found that 60% of identified sex trafficking victims were recruited by a family member or intimate partner, and 87% of identified labor trafficking victims were recruited by a non-family member, such as a friend, acquaintance, business contact, or neighbor. And the FBI’s Innocence Lost National Initiative discovered the life expectancy for sex trafficking survivors is 7 years. We need to END Trafficking.

Welcome to Normalize The Conversation, your host Francesca Reicherter is joined by human rights activist, Sophia Fisher. For over five years, Sophia has been working in the anti-trafficking space with a passion to help open the conversation while educating us on how to identify trafficking and understand how it manifests.

Childhood Verbal Abuse, Unhealthy Relationships, and Mental Health Recovery with Jaclyn Tipton

Childhood Verbal Abuse, Unhealthy Relationships, and Mental Health Recovery with Jaclyn Tipton

Childhood trauma can present itself throughout adulthood in feelings of shame, guilt, depression, anxiety, isolation, and more. In this episode of Normalize The Conversation, we hear about a mental health journey from verbal abuse at age 9 to disordered eating behaviors to the ups and downs of romantic relationships.

Welcome to Normalize The Conversation, your host, Francesca Reicherter, is joined by Jaclyn Tipton, mental health advocate and Program Director for NAMI Tallahassee.

---

About Jaclyn:

Jaclyn Tipton went through a devastating breakup in 2019 and has never looked back. This was a breaking point for Jaclyn and a wake up call to just how poor her mental health was. With the help of her therapist, she discovered the traumas and dramas of her childhood and how exactly that shaped her into who she is today: a woman of resilience and healing.   After the breakup, she quit working full-time in marketing and started a mental health apparel company to destigmatize mental illness. When she realized that owning a business was worsening her depression and anxiety, she became a Peer Specialist at Tallahassee, Florida's Apalachee Center, Inc. in 2021.   Her current position is as Program Coordinator for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Tallahassee, a local affiliate of NAMI National, which is the largest grassroots mental health non-profit in the US. Though she is thriving today, she is no stranger to how difficult living with mental health conditions can be. Join us today on Normalizing the Conversation to see how Jaclyn navigates modern-day life with Persistent Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

How Forgiveness Played A Role in Tim's Sobriety

How Forgiveness Played A Role in Tim's Sobriety

Tim lives in Stoughton, Wisconsin with his wife and two adult children. Originally from Toledo, Ohio, Tim moved to Wisconsin over 23 years ago to marry Tracy. He graduated from St. John’s Jesuit High School in 1983 and began attending the only college he ever wanted to go to–Ohio Northern University (ONU) where his grandfather was a leader in the Psychology Department. At ONU Tim studied Philosophy and Religion and Psychology while being involved in Sigma Theta Epsilon (Christian Service Fraternity), a faculty/student choir and with traveling ministry teams (Son’s Rays and a failed attempt at puppetry.) Unfortunately Tim was only able to spend two years at ONU (for details, you can have him speak on growing up a child in an alcoholic household and becoming an alcoholic himself.)

Tim transferred to Bowling Green State University (BGSU) and graduated (barely) in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Philosophy. While at BGSU Tim was active in campus ministry and served as Youth Director for a local parish while volunteering with the Diocese of Toledo. The highlight of his BGSU career was listening to Mr. Rogers speak at his graduation ceremony. Tim spent time as Director of Pastoral Concerns and religion teacher at a local high school, as an early childhood educator and as a substance abuse counselor before being accepted into the Masters program at John Carroll University (Ohio) in 1990 and earning his Masters in Counseling in 1993. While at John Carroll (JCU), Tim was also involved in numerous volunteer activities including an outreach to Appalachia. He also received the Magis Award from the Student Council of JCU.

After a year of working as a College Counselor and Hall Director in Ohio, Tim moved to West Virginia to volunteer on a Catholic Worker Farm. While there, a friend introduced him (over the phone) to the wonderful woman who would become his wife. Tim moved to Wisconsin in 1995 and Tracy and he were married that same year. They were blessed with Hunter being born in 1997 and Sami in 1999.  Since moving to Wisconsin, Tim has worked in early childhood education; in customer service at Davis Duehr Dean; in Quality Assurance at Epic Systems; as an Office Manager at LakeView Church and as a House Father for the Elizabeth House. Ten years ago Tim was hired as an Outreach Specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Waisman Center where he currently works as the Director of the Southern Regional Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs, Family Discipline Coordinator for the WI LEND program and as a senior outreach specialist with the Youth Health Transition Initiative.

In 2014, Tim finally finished a 10+year journey when he earned a Master of Arts in Christian Studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Illinois). As his capstone project Tim combined the scientific research around forgiveness and his faith background’s belief in forgiveness to develop an eight week course centered on why forgiveness is necessary and how to forgive. Since then Tim has taught about forgiveness at Stoughton Hospital, Lifest, area churches, local and statewide mental/behavioral health conferences, an aging conference, on the radio and at educator wellness events. Tim’s brings a unique perspective through sharing his personal journey through childhood trauma, alcoholism, betrayals, misunderstandings, mental health challenges and life.
