What do you do when you are in one of those conversations where someone says something that doesn’t sound right? It might be a political comment that is a little extreme. It might be a tone in how someone responds to a question. It might be a reference to something in Scripture that isn’t accurate. It might be a negative comment about a friend or family member. In our culture we kind of have a mixed signal in how we are supposed to respond to those moments. It used to be “love is love.” It’s not my place to say anything. Then we moved to silence is violence, so you have to say something. Now everyone is walking around on eggshells afraid to talk to anyone. The first half of 1 Corinthians is essentially the Corinthians wondering if they should listen to what Paul has to say to them. Have you ever been in one of those contexts where people aren’t sure if they should listen to what you have to say? In our passage this morning we are going to see God’s Word pointing us back to Jesus. When we are speaking into people’s lives we aren’t speaking our agendas but we are simply pointing them to Jesus. 3/5/2023 - Felling stuck and lack of relational depth?

We don’t want to think of ourselves as foolish.  After all, most of us have been told our whole lives, “You can do anything you want!”  You can be anything you want as long as you believe in yourself and work hard”.  This is called the philosophy self-determination.  We love it!     Yet our health is breaking down.  Our schedules are inconsistent.  Our relationships are struggling.  Our career is unstable.  Our decisions in life aren’t unfolding as planned and we get frustrated.  As gently as possible God’s Word is saying to us this morning, “We’re not as capable as we think we are.”  We’re more fragile than we want to admit.  We’re more limited than we want to admit. In the context of our passage we are going to see God’s Word reminding us of the cross and the reason is there is power in the message of the cross.  This morning God’s Word is going to show us there are two types of people in this room.  You are either the type of person who is convinced of the power in Jesus’ life, death and resurrection or you are convinced the cross is foolish.  You can’t be in both groups.  You can’t be in neither group.  You either see the cross as powerful or you see the cross as foolish. Last Sunday we kicked off our new series in 1 Corinthians and learned about the messiness of the Corinthian church. We learned about a people who have inconsistent beliefs, inconsistent behaviors. In a day like today, when people are arguing, criticizing and sometimes cutting people out of their lives because of beliefs and behaviors.   This morning we are going to continue in 1 Corinthians and look at division in the local church.  Sometimes people in Christ struggle to get along with one another and God’s Word meets us in the practical areas of life. www.northvillagechurch.com Watch on Youtube

Join us as we kick off a new series in 1 Corinthians about what it means to be a healthy church because in the context of the Corinthian church they are a mess.     In chapter 5 we have a man sleeping with his step-mother.  In chapter 6 we have church family members taking one another to court.  In chapter 11 they are getting drunk off communion.  In chapter 15 there are people denying the resurrection of Jesus.  This doesn’t even touch on the in-fighting within the local church.  The arrogance of the Corinthians.  The lack of love and compassion toward others and the Corinthian catch phrase, “Let us eat, drink and be merry because tomorrow we die!”  Could you imagine how you might respond if these types of people showed up in your newsfeed?  Can you imagine the types of things we might type in the comments section?  Can you imagine how we might respond to those types of people if they walked in on a Sunday morning or showed up in our community group? Do you know those moments when you are with little kids and you say to them, “Don’t touch.”  They nod their head in agreement but then as soon as you look away, they slowly reach their hands out to touch.     In our passage this morning we are going to take a peek into the patterns of people, and we are going to see how God’s Word responds to those patterns, so that this morning we are going to see   1. It’s possible we see layers of distress in our life because of familial relationships, estranged friendships, concerns about our physical health, or even things going on at the soul level, but I am guessing that many of us, it not all of us see fractures of destress, fractures of anxiety in our life. This week pastor Keith walks us through Titus 3:3-6.  For Jesus to be the Lord of our lives, we have to press into questions such as… Do we believe He is God in the flesh?  Do we know what He wants us to do? If so, do we obey Him? Do we follow Him? Are we trusting Him with our lives, or are we trusting something else - ourselves, our friends and family, our bank account, our jobs, the government?

This morning we are going to finish Philippians. We started this series a few months ago all around the idea of being called out as Heavenly Citizens in Christ. What a timely reminder for us as a church family in Austin, TX to remember who we are in Christ and wrestle with what it means to live out our faith in Christ in 2022.

This week, guest speaker Kevin Jenkins walks us through Philippians 3:4-16. We look at perseverance and see that our standing with God is: 1. Not from our credentials(v. 4-7) 2. Not from our experience (v. 8-11) 3. Not from our efforts (v 12-16)

     The passage we are going to talk about is actually about circumcision, the removal of flesh from the male private parts, but at the heart of our passage is a conversation about where we find our confidence in life.       Perhaps there are some of us who find our confidence in our physical appearance?  Perhaps we get to a point where we can lift a certain number of weights?  Perhaps we can get to that number on the scale?  Perhaps we can run that distance, but sometimes our physical appearance can give us a level of confidence?      Maybe for some it is our title at work in Austin?  It is our GPA.  It is our educational background, so that our accomplishments give us a level of confidence.  Perhaps for some it is our economic stability?  It wasn’t that long ago that we felt like our economy was so strong, our house values were going up, gas prices were going down, and we felt so confident but quickly all of that seems to be fading.

This morning we are going to talk about the importance of honoring the men in our life.  We’re not talking about this subject this morning because it is Father’s Day at our church in Austin.  Our passage this morning happens to be the passage in our series and our passage is honoring men in our life because good men are hard to find in life. Today we will see three points in the passage:   1. Example of Timothy (vs. 19-24). 2. The Example of Epaphroditus. (vs. 25-27) 3. Honor Such Men (vs. 28-30)

This morning we are going to talk about obedience to God’s Word. In some ways, we think being an adult means nobody tells you what to do anymore. Then, we get job, we get a boss telling us what to do, and then we think, “I want to own my own business so I can be the boss and get to do what I want to do.” But it never ends. The government tells us what to do. The city of Austin tells us what to do as a church in Austin. Law enforcement tells us what to do, and then we come to God’s Word and we see God’s Word telling us what to do, so sometimes our natural push back on obedience to God’s Word can be resistance. But this is why we study God’s Word so we can have a biblical understanding obedience, so that this morning we will see three sub-points;   1. Work Out.   2. Without.   3. Poured Out.

Do you know the term G.O.A.T?  It means Greatest Of All Time. Michael Jordan, Mohammad Ali, Tiger Woods and Serena Williams are great athletes. Great music composers are Bach, Chopin, Mozart and Beethoven. Great leaders are Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa, and Winston Churchill. The passage we are going to look at this morning is the greatest passage of all time. We are going to see the greatest humiliation of all time, the greatest exaltation of all time, and our passage will demand the greatest response of all time, so that this morning we are going to see three sub-points; 1. The Greatest Humiliation. 2. The Greatest Exaltation. 3. The Greatest Response.

What do we do with all this fighting? The assumption is we can educate people better so that we don’t get into these fights. Or maybe we just move from north central Austin out in the middle of nowhere, so we don’t have to be around those fights? How does God’s Word respond to all this fighting? This morning we will see three sub-points to help us navigate these fights; 1. The Context. 2. The Command. 3. The Comfort.

In this weeks sermon pastor Michael Dennis walks us through Philippians 1:27-30. We look at 3 main takeaways from the message: Stand Firm (vs 27) Spunk (vs 28) Suffering (vs 29-30)   Summary:      Our immediate thought on life is that God’s role in our life is to protect us from suffering, opposition, hardship but verse 29 is teaching that our suffering in life is a gift of God’s grace in our life.  How’s that possible?  It’s because the God of Scripture knows our hearts and minds will easily latch on to the sparkly things of this world that will not last.  We don’t just love romance; we give up everything for romance.  We don’t just love our careers we become workacholic.  We don’t just love our hobbies, we become obsessive.  We don’t just eat food, we become gluttonous.  Our hearts and minds will latch on to the things of this world and they won’t last, and the Lord knows they won’t last.  We know they won’t last.   Relationships come and go.  Careers come and go.  Hobbies are great until we get old and our bodies fade, our minds fade.  The economy is up and down.  The politicians are hit and miss.  The things of this world are fleeting, and the Lord knows the things of this world are fleeting.     Therefore, the God of Scripture, the creator of all things will absolutely bring the gift of suffering into our life, not because He hates us, but because He loves us and He wants to show us that He is the only part of life that we can hold on to for eternity, therefore, the Apostle Paul writes, “29 For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake.”

In today's world, there is a lot of political divide. This sermon illustrates the importance of leaning towards those who may disagree with us, rather than away.

Our society and culture has a lot to say on this topic. But what should we believe based on what the Bible says?

We are saved when we accept and proclaim Jesus as our Lord and Savior. But what about the people who haven't heard about Jesus? Are they saved? We learn more about that in this sermon.

In Titus chapter 3, Paul offers a reminder to the Cretans about what they should be doing. Sometimes we, like the Cretans, also need reminders.

In Exodus 40, Moses builds the Tabernacle according to God's instructions. The Tabernacle is an important place of worship, and it can help guide the way we worship today.

In Exodus 33 we see Moses cry out in prayer, "Lord, we need your presence."  Over and over the Lord had done miraculous movements in the life of Israel, but still Israel wanders from the Lord and worships a golden calf.  In the message, Pastor Michael walks us through the passage to see 3 sub-points; 1.  Why do we drift from the presence of God?  2.  What is the presence of God?  How do we engage the presence of God?
