Episode 71 – It’s okay to make mistakes

We don’t always get things right; we are human and make mistakes. With modern media like Instagram, TikToK etc we tend to only see the perfect groupings or perfect shots. This is the main topic of this episode where I discuss that it’s important for people to realise things can go wrong and to remember “Mistakes are only mistakes if we don’t learn from them”.

You shouldn't dwell on your mistakes but learn from them. This is far easier to say than do, but it is worth trying.

In this special episode of the podcast, I am delighted to have as a very special guest on the show Harry Boyce, the current president on the National Field Archery Society here in the UK.

In the episode we discuss what got Harry into archery, his current set up, what he does when not shooting and the upcoming One Big Event which see the 50th anniversary of NFAS. At the two-day event there are expected to be nearly 700 archers competing over 4 courses of 3D targets.

So yes I am testing out some new recording equipment in this podcast thanks to my better half birthday present to me.

In the first episode of the new year, I had the great pleasure of being joined by Zach Ball. A young man I’ve know for well over 10 years and is a very capable archer and course layer. Episode 56 - Seasons greetings and reflections.

So, seasons greetings to all and best wishes for the new year. I hope all my followers and listeners across the pond are safe and being able to stay warm given the current weather conditions you are experiencing. This is just a short podcast , partly due to feeling sorry for myself having come down with stinking cold just after Christmas and part reflective, probably due to time of year on things that have happened in the past and still making me feel about my possible future in archery.

The book I mention is How to get rid of Archers reflex by Jess Lysgaard. It's just been translated into English .

episode 33 - a coaching question - takedown or one-piece recurve

So in this episode I have a Sunday off from Archery coaching and trying to answer a couple of question I get asked lots is

What kind of bow I should buy? Should I go for a one-piece recurve verses takedown recurve?

These questions always make me a little nervous as I feel that buying a bow is so personal, So I’m going to try and discuss options, like bolt on limbs for some risers, compared with ILF risers and limbs (International Limb Fit). Episode 32 – A Coaching Sunday

Something a little different in this episode. I ran a series of coaching sessions on Sunday and in the gaps before or after each, I decided to try and record some thoughts and observations. I hope it gives a bit of an insight into the sort of things I get up to when it comes to coaching and activities down at the archery wood, like searching for wayward arrows.

It starts with a bit of me waffling on over sound of car engine and some of the recordings are made on my phone whilst in the car or walking round the wood, whilst others are at home, so sorry for the change in audio quality. I’m no expert at mixing things together, but I hope it gives you a bit of an authentic insight into the life of a field archery coach.

Archery is proving more and more popular in films and other media like, Hunger games, Brave, Avengers films, new Hawkeye series, Arrow series

Episode 16 Wooden Arrow making part 3

Yes, it is, indeed part three of me trying to explain how I make wooden arrows and, in this episode I try to explain how I tune the arrows in. This is the last of the wooden arrow making trilogy and I really hope it has been of use.

A good thing to buy is a grain scale to weigh you arrow components, I use a digital grain scale.

Top tip to remember your arrows are a disposable asset so accept they are disposable asset, they will wear out, break or get lost.

So this is episode 10, double figures time already.

In this podcast I will be continuing to look at the Archers Triangle and focusing on the Archer side of the triangle. In the previous podcast I talked about the physical aspects associated with the archer and in the one I will spend time discussing the Shot Sequence.

How the chain of actions you perform when taking a shot, might have a positive or negative effect on the success of your shot.

Episode 06 - The Archers Triangle

In this podcast I am going to introduce the concept of the Archers Triangle. Whether you are a target archer, hunter or field shooter. Archery can be broken down into three components, Archer, Arrow and Bow. These three need to work together successfully for the best outcome.

I have found this method of explaining archery to students very useful when coaching as they can easily identify the relationship between the three elements, whilst also useful in focusing them on specific elements as they develop.

In future podcasts I will go into each of the three elements in more depth.
