Episode 71 – It’s okay to make mistakes
We don’t always get things right; we are human and make mistakes. With modern media like Instagram, TikToK etc we tend to only see the perfect groupings or perfect shots. This is the main topic of this episode where I discuss that it’s important for people to realise things can go wrong and to remember “Mistakes are only mistakes if we don’t learn from them”.
You shouldn't dwell on your mistakes but learn from them. This is far easier to say than do, but it is worth trying.
I mention a couple of other podcasts in this episode Modern Outdoor Survival and Outside & Active (which has Ray Mears on). You can check these out on Spotify or other streaming services.
There is also my version of don't be that guy.

Episode 70 - Special Guest – Harry Boyce president of National Field archery Society
In this special episode of the podcast, I am delighted to have as a very special guest on the show Harry Boyce, the current president on the National Field Archery Society here in the UK.
In the episode we discuss what got Harry into archery, his current set up, what he does when not shooting and the upcoming One Big Event which see the 50th anniversary of NFAS. At the two-day event there are expected to be nearly 700 archers competing over 4 courses of 3D targets.
I’d like to add my thanks to Harry for making time to record this episode as I know he is really busy.

Episode 69 - Quiver dump, what I carry when shooting
I often get asked what to take on a shoot and what do you carry, so I recorded this in response.
Sorry audio not great at times with rustling of contents of quiver. I carry more than other people do, but over the years I’ve found it all useful.
I mention an article I wrote for the site on what I carry so this is the link https://offthearrowshelf.com/2012/06/19/bow-arrows-and-kitchen-sink-what-do-you-carry-with-you-on-a-field-shoot/

Episode 68 - Why did you get into and stay with archery?
So a couple of questions to ask yourself
Why did you get into archery in the first place?
Why have you stuck with it?
We all come to it via different paths and stick to it for different reasons too.
I know we got into it after having a go whilst on holiday and stuck around because we enjoyed it. Combination of being out in the woodland and nature, challenge of shooting and for me the opportunity to coach and help people.
Let me know where you started and why you’ve stayed.

Episode 67 - potential risk in archery
This may not sound the most exciting topic to talk around but as an archer, course layer or just attendee at a club we have to recognise that archery can be potentially risky, some might say dangerous. I discuss ideas and views of what to consider and why it is important.
There is also a bit of a don't be that guy rant too in this podcast.

Episode 66 - Answering listeners question on use of binoculars
This is in response to a couple of questions from a follower, who was asking about how to incorporate the use of binoculars into his shooting process now that National Field archery Society here in the UK are allowing them in his class which is Barebow.
I offer some thoughts and ideas of what you could do and how to gain confidence in using them, along with factors to consider to consider so they don’t have a negative impact on your draw sequence.

So yes I am testing out some new recording equipment in this podcast thanks to my better half birthday present to me.
I give a quick summary of the National Field Archery Society voting results on new rules and classes, etc.
There is also a quick update on how I am feeling after shooting a couple of NFAS courses, how I've changed my perspective to focus on just enjoying the time with family and not being solely competitive with myself.

Episode 64 – How I go about mapping out a field course
It might not sound the most exciting thing in the world but I know there are a couple of listeners who have been asking about the process.
The App I use is OS Locate on my phone and the range finder is a Hawk and here is a link to the review I wrote a few years back. offthearrowshelf.com/2019/05/17/equipment-review-hawke-400-rangefinder/

So it is the start of a New year, so before we start Happy New Year to all.
In this episode of the podcast I talk a little about my plans for motivation and goals, which revolve round helping archery family, whether through podcasts or writing.
I also talk about a coaching thought of difference between being zoned out and zoned in. I'll try to expand on it more in a future episode.

So it is the start of a New year, so before we start Happy New Year to all.
In the first episode of the new year, I had the great pleasure of being joined by Zach Ball. A young man I’ve know for well over 10 years and is a very capable archer and course layer. We spend an hour talking about course laying, factors to consider depending on environment, targets you are setting out, as well as loads of other stuff like our views on target faces, juniors in the society and general archery stuff.
It’s the first in a series I am hoping to record on course laying.

Episode 56 - Seasons greetings and reflections.
So, seasons greetings to all and best wishes for the new year. I hope all my followers and listeners across the pond are safe and being able to stay warm given the current weather conditions you are experiencing. This is just a short podcast , partly due to feeling sorry for myself having come down with stinking cold just after Christmas and part reflective, probably due to time of year on things that have happened in the past and still making me feel about my possible future in archery.
The book I mention is How to get rid of Archers reflex by Jess Lysgaard. It's just been translated into English .
Check out the latest on my website for a review of the NFAS target faces we have been using down at the club for past few months .
Also sharing some sad news of the passing of one of my old coaches Cherrie Peabody who introduced Sharon and myself to archery . My thoughts and sympathy got out to her family.

Episode 40 - What is a field archery course
Welcome to episode 40 from Off the Arrow Shelf. In this podcast episode I going to explain what an archery field course is, how they work, you move round it etc. It comes about from a discussion I was having the other day with someone and I thought it might be of interest to others. Happy New Year all. First podcast of 2022 and I hope it finds you all well and happy.
In this podcast I mention how good it is to have Angel Garcia of High Power Archery podcasts back again, along with Anthony from Off Centre Archers.
I try to explain why I'm not sponsored or use this podcast and website to generate funds.
I go into some details about the joys of coaching a young club member as they go through their Duke of Edenborough award. There is a slight footnote to this recording where I explain the Duke of Edenborough awards scheme
Also I explain why now is a good time to be looking at your clubs field courses and possibly mapping out new shots.

episode 33 - a coaching question - takedown or one-piece recurve
So in this episode I have a Sunday off from Archery coaching and trying to answer a couple of question I get asked lots is
What kind of bow I should buy? Should I go for a one-piece recurve verses takedown recurve? These questions always make me a little nervous as I feel that buying a bow is so personal, So I’m going to try and discuss options, like bolt on limbs for some risers, compared with ILF risers and limbs (International Limb Fit). I hope it provides some useful advice. A few years back I wrote an article covering some of these options https://offthearrowshelf.com/2020/02/06/what-kind-of-bow-should-i-buy/

Episode 32 – A Coaching Sunday
Something a little different in this episode. I ran a series of coaching sessions on Sunday and in the gaps before or after each, I decided to try and record some thoughts and observations. I hope it gives a bit of an insight into the sort of things I get up to when it comes to coaching and activities down at the archery wood, like searching for wayward arrows.
It starts with a bit of me waffling on over sound of car engine and some of the recordings are made on my phone whilst in the car or walking round the wood, whilst others are at home, so sorry for the change in audio quality. I’m no expert at mixing things together, but I hope it gives you a bit of an authentic insight into the life of a field archery coach.
The article I was talking about helping with tea-potting is linked below

Episode 30 - Archery Portrayal in the Media
In this podcast I'm going to briefly look at the impact of how archery is portrayed in movies, TV series, YouTube
Archery is proving more and more popular in films and other media like, Hunger games, Brave, Avengers films, new Hawkeye series, Arrow series
But this portrayal is not always accurate when it comes to actual practical shooting or coaching. This can then have an impact on what new archery students expect to be able to do or what is correct form.
Hence my quote of Edgar Allan Poe "Believe only half of what you see, and nothing that you hear."

So, following requests from some listeners I am focusing this and the next podcast on arrow making, giving my thoughts and starting the breakdown of what I consider important with arrow making. You might find this article i wrote several years ago useful starting point too https://offthearrowshelf.com/2015/11/13/wooden-arrows-shafts-a-few-thoughts-before-you-buy/
I make mention of a couple of other podcasts and wanted to include the details here. Also if anyone has come across any studies on the use of different woods in arrows i would love to hear about it.
Check out The Push technical guys I was talking about was Cody and the Trad lab podcasts. https://www.thetradlab.com/copy-of-tradlab-studies
I mentioned a review of the Batwing feathers from Gateway I wrote and here is the link https://offthearrowshelf.com/2019/02/19/equipment-review-batwing-feather-fletchings/ also to Gateway themselves (https://www.gatewayfeathers.com/
A good thing to buy is a grain scale to weigh you arrow components, I use a digital grain scale.
Top tip to remember your arrows are a disposable asset so accept they are disposable asset, they will wear out, break or get lost.
As always, any questions or thoughts let me know.
Stay safe, stay well and thanks for listening.

Episode 13 - Getting the right coach and comic duo
So, in this episode which marks a the 13th episode (unlucky for some) I am going to be talking a little about the importance of finding a good coach you can work with, along with saying how coaching made me think of a classic British comedy duo of Morecambe and Wise Christmas show with Andre Previn.
Also, I want to give a shout out to a few of other podcasters who I have been listening recently Richard over at Archery Geek Outdoors, The Off Center Archers with Stephanie & Anthony Conte and Angel Garcia at High Power Archery Podcast. I am so sorry Angel I couldn’t remember your name off the top of my head, anyone who knows me will tell you my memory for names is truly awful. Please accept my apologies.
I really do like the slot in your podcasts “Don’t be that guy” hope you don't mind me adapting / adopting a similar idea.

Episode 12 - Current view of Field Archery
So in this episode I am going to give a bit of a review of the current situation field archery is in in UK or at least a perspective of how some NFAS clubs are coping with COVID-19 and have started to run competitions again.
I also mentioned the Angry Badger podcasts which is following a bushcraft day I did in North Wales recently.

Episode 11 - the Archers triangle - mental game
In this episode I cover the last element of the archers triangle - that of the archer and the archers mindset when it comes to shooting. It is a huge topic and I made mention of a couple of books which are detailed below.
Apologies for all the sniffing too and chair creaking. My desk chair is about given up and I blame the sniffing on the change of weather here in the UK. Before anyone says it, it's not me that is creaking it is the chair.
Thanks for listening, stay safe.

I also made reference to The Push podcasts and it was episode Episode 143 - Canadas Finest with Alex Melnik

Episode 10 - Archers Triangle - Shot Sequence
So this is episode 10, double figures time already.
In this podcast I will be continuing to look at the Archers Triangle and focusing on the Archer side of the triangle. In the previous podcast I talked about the physical aspects associated with the archer and in the one I will spend time discussing the Shot Sequence.
How the chain of actions you perform when taking a shot, might have a positive or negative effect on the success of your shot.
I mentioned a several podcasts and I thought it worth adding a list here of them. I also mentioned Joel Turner and Shot IQ which is well worth investigating further. There is a great session with the guys at Bowjunky archery podcasts available from Podbeam (https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/3vnys-42d61/Bowjunky-archery-podcast)

Some of these guys have their own YouTube channels too which are worth checking out.

Episode 09 - The Archers Triangle - Archer physical aspects
So in this episode I focus on the third side of the Archers Triangle, that of the archer. Possibly the hardest element of the triangle to control as it has the most variables.
I will be focusing on the physical aspects in this podcast and moving onto shot sequence in the next episode and finishing on the mental side in the episode after that which should be episode 11.
I mentioned Archery Geek Outdoors in this podcast and here is a link to his site https://archerygeekoutdoors.podbean.com/

Episode 08 - Archers Triangle - the bow side
Continuing the series on the Archers Triangle concept I mentioned back in episode 6. This episode gives some thoughts on the second side of the triangle the Bow. How this might affect the archer, touching on topics like over bowing.
As always if you have any questions drop me a line on offthearrowshelf@yahoo.co.uk or drop by the website https://offthearrowshelf.com/

Episode 07 - Archers Triangle - the Arrow
In this podcast I am expanding on the concept of the Archers Triangle, focusing on the arrow initially.
This covers one of the sides of the triangle and looks at some of the aspects to be considered when thinking about arrows from a traditional archers prospective.
I hope you find this of interest and use.

Episode 06 - The Archers Triangle
In this podcast I am going to introduce the concept of the Archers Triangle. Whether you are a target archer, hunter or field shooter. Archery can be broken down into three components, Archer, Arrow and Bow. These three need to work together successfully for the best outcome.
I have found this method of explaining archery to students very useful when coaching as they can easily identify the relationship between the three elements, whilst also useful in focusing them on specific elements as they develop.
In future podcasts I will go into each of the three elements in more depth.

Episode 05 - Filtering out the noise
SO in this episode I am going to talk about the wealth of resources out there for archers, but also the dangers of getting swamped by all the different messages and advice.

Episode 04 - What is Instinctive Archery
Here I explore what my thoughts are on Instinctive archery and what it means to me. I mention Grizzly Jim so here is a link to his channel - Archery Adventures YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/jaykentno10)

Episode 03 - Some back story
So it's traditional to provide some background of how you got into archery, how long I've been shooting and so on. So I've tried to do this here.
Telling how I fist started all those years ago. Sorry if it rambles on a bit.
Thanks for listening.

Episode 02 - Back to the woods
In this, the second instalment from off the arrow shelf I will be talking about our return to woods after a long break thanks to COVID-19. I'll be trying to offer some advice on things to consider, beyond the obvious things like bow, arrows etc.
I wanted to include a link to Forest Knight article I wrote after taking their first aid course.

Episode 01 - Welcome
Welcome to this, the inaugural podcast from Off the arrow shelf.
I’m Rob Jones, a field archer in the UK who is hoping to help other archers and do my bit to promote the hobby of field archery here in the Britain.
