Sell more with Limited Edition Packaging, Chobani's Lauren Hodges | Ep 148
Lauren Hodges, a creative director at Chobani, brings a wealth of experience in design and a passion for food and beverage. She joined Chobani in 2019 and has been instrumental in pushing the brand in new and exciting directions. With Chobani Flip, a popular product line known for its delicious flavors and interactive packaging, Lauren has found the perfect canvas to unleash her creativity.
The recent Halloween packaging design is a testament to Chobani's commitment to surprise and delight consumers. Inspired by the fashion industry, Chobani wanted to create packaging that changed with the seasons, just like clothing styles. The goal was to create a billboard effect on the shelf, capturing the attention of shoppers and compelling them to pick up the product.
To achieve this, Chobani themed each flavor for Halloween, giving them playful and spooky names like "Ghost Story S'mores" and "Cookie Monsters and Cream." The colorful backgrounds added a touch of vibrancy to the natural packaging, making it stand out on the shelf. The illustrations for the Halloween packaging were created by the talented artist John McNair, whose spooky style perfectly captured the spirit of the season.
But Chobani didn't stop at just the packaging design. They also incorporated an augmented reality (AR) experience through scannable QR codes on the packaging. By scanning the code, consumers can play a virtual trick-or-treating game on their phones, knocking on doors to collect treats. This interactive experience adds an extra layer of fun and engagement to the product, making it even more appealing to consumers.
The limited edition nature of the Halloween packaging adds to its appeal. Limited edition products create a sense of exclusivity and urgency, driving sales and encouraging consumers to collect them all. However, Chobani recognizes that there is a limit to how many limited editions they can release without diluting the impact. They carefully select the moments and themes that align with their brand ethos and purpose.
Chobani's ability to reach different audiences with their packaging design is a result of their strong brand foundation. While they have various product lines targeting different consumer segments, they all ladder up to the same brand purpose. This consistency builds trust among consumers, allowing them to make the leap from one product to another with confidence.
Packaging plays a crucial role in conveying trust to consumers. It is the first point of contact between the brand and the consumer, and it must communicate the brand's integrity and quality. Chobani's packaging design achieves this by incorporating elements of craft and storytelling. The team draws inspiration from various sources, including art forms like painting and illustration, to infuse beauty and soulfulness into their designs.
In conclusion, Chobani's Halloween packaging design is a testament to their commitment to creativity and innovation. By incorporating playful themes, vibrant colors, and interactive elements, Chobani has created packaging that surprises and delights consumers. The limited edition nature of the packaging adds to its appeal, driving sales and encouraging consumers to collect them all. Chobani's ability to reach different audiences with their packaging design is a result of their strong brand foundation and consistent brand purpose. As Chobani continues to push the boundaries of packaging design, we can expect more exciting and innovative creations in the future.

Unboxing Rodecaster Pro 2 | Watch on Spotify or Youtube | Ep 132
Evelio unboxes the RODECaster Pro Two, a piece of podcasting equipment he'll use while traveling through Europe making podcasts. The box came with mics and headphones, and Evelio is eager to start plugging it in and using it.
The sleeve of the box is four-color printed and features a foil stamp with detailed copy pieces.
The inside of the box is one-color black with icons and information on the top and back. The outer panel is laminated with a smooth finish, and only the exterior is printed. Evelio is impressed with the design of the box and is excited to start using the product. This conversation is about the fold-out box design and how it can be used for product packaging. The fold-out box has a flap on the material which can be used for components or may be wasted. It also has a drawbridge front which allows the user to slide out whatever is inside. There is also an arrow to the back which allows the user to pull out whatever is inside. The box also contains an insert which is a corrugated tuck box.
The box could potentially contain a variety of power plugs from different countries, but having the key product streamlines the logistics process. This design makes it easy to insert power cords for different countries. This conversation discusses the importance of good packaging design from both a user experience and sustainability standpoint. Evelio talks about how it is essential to take into account different countries when designing packaging.
He mentions how a good packaging design would include messaging on the outside, a single color box, and branding and educational messaging on the inside.
From a sustainability standpoint, matte laminated paper can be recycled, but it will be downcycled into something else, not paper. It can be used for things such as insulation, which is not recycled or reprocessed but instead has been used for years.

Artificial Intelligence, Pantone vs Lab, Design Education : Package Ink Replay | Ep 129
Evelio Mattos introduces the podcast episode featuring Tommy Bonyr and Frida Anderson where they discuss Artificial Intelligence and Packaging Design.
They talk about Pantone color versus lab conversation, and sustainable packaging solutions like solar power, algae inks, and carbon negative inks.
Evelio is a member of the Pentawards Jury 2023 and has been working with brands like Michael Kors and Sonos. He is a graphic designer and was initially interested in doing death metal posters, but realized that nobody was paying for that kind of work. He then moved on to website design and ads, which he did not find very exciting.
He then got a chance to do a packaging design job and found that more interesting. He is excited to be part of the podcast and ready to discuss his experience in packaging design. The speaker discusses their first experience working in packaging design. They explain how they fell in love with the art form after creating a physical piece from a box.
They go on to explain how packaging is a superpower since it can traverse time and space, allowing for trends in one year to be used to design something for the next year. They discuss how the chain of people involved in the packaging process is mixed with people from all over the world and different industries. Finally, they talk about when it is time to get paid for their work. The speaker describes how they got into the packaging design industry. They began their journey in flat design but then had the opportunity to create a box and realized that this was the field they wanted to pursue. The speaker then started their own business and got the opportunity to work with a manufacturer, eventually building an agency and selling it.
The speaker discusses how they had to learn the basics of print before they could control it and how they began as an assistant at an agency in California before learning from everyone and climbing the ranks.

Packaging Design Has Changed Forever - Designing with Midjourney 5 & GPT 4 | Ep 128
Evelio Mattos is discussing how the combination of Mid Journey Five and Chat GT Four is changing the world of design. This combination is impacting the way websites and packaging are designed, and Mattos is providing advice on how to stay ahead of the curve and keep your design job.
Evelio shares his journey in packaging design with Midjourney, from version three to version four to version five. In version four, he reached out to Chris Branch, a buddy in Liverpool, who taught him how to make his prompts better and get better results. In version five, the biggest difference is that everything looks like a photograph. Through this journey, Evelio learned that it is important to start simple, and that adding too many terms will confuse the AI and lead to poor results. Mid Journey Five is a technology that allows pro photographers to quickly set up lighting and create high quality images in a short amount of time.
It can be used to create mood boards to set a certain look or feel for a client. Chat GPT Four is a chat interface that can generate code for websites and games, automate features in InDesign, and even understand images. This technology is changing the way people work, as it can be used to quickly generate die lines, create multiple layers for artwork, and even answer questions that require an understanding of an image.
This is making it possible to produce work ten times faster. In this conversation, the speaker talks about the potential of AI to assist in design work. They suggest that Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop could be used with a chatbot window to apply best practices to artwork, such as sizing up logos differently and positioning them in a different place. The speaker also mentions that AI could be used to create designs that are different than what consumers are used to, and that designers should take the lead in AI and keep pushing it forward. Ultimately, the speaker suggests that AI could be used to create ads and social media posts without any design background, and that this could lead to a decrease in what consumers expect from design.

How Designers Are Using MidJourney To Build Their Businesses with Sherry Horowitz the Ai Conjurer | Ep 126
The Packaging Unbox Podcast recently had the pleasure of speaking with Sherry Horowitz about Mid Journey artificial intelligence. They discussed the different types of prompts that she uses, how to get started with a prompt, and making a living with Mid Journey as her copilot. They also touched upon the ethics of artificial intelligence, as well as how to work with agencies, designers, and implementing it into a functioning workflow. Sherry also shared her insight on how to make the most of the experience and how to use the technology to get ahead. Additionally, they discussed their sponsors, Idpdirect.com and Specrite.com, who provide factory direct packaging and documentation for EPR laws, respectively. This conversation was full of valuable information and Sherry was an entertaining and informative guest.
The speaker is an enthusiastic tech adopter, and AI has had a dramatic effect on them. Specifically, they are using AI to generate 360-degree visuals for their clients faster and with more ideas than before. For example, they recently completed a dream job, utilizing AI to generate visuals in a way that would have taken weeks to produce manually or, in some cases, wasn't even possible. AI has been an absolute boon to their work, allowing them to have an idea, test it out, and see if it's in the right direction quickly and easily.
The speaker recently helped Isaac Rodansky of Adventure Media, a digital performance marketing firm in Long Island, with a client called Grown Brilliant. The speaker discussed how Adventure Media was able to do branding, as well as digital performance strategy. Isaac is an industrial psychologist who used to be an artist and is able to walk the line between design and digital. The speaker also discussed how they have a network of people they use when working on larger projects, but can work very lean right now. They also discussed the idea of AI taking away jobs, but they believe it is creating more opportunity as it is still difficult to use and people still need photographers and graphic designers.
In this conversation, the speaker discusses the importance of using prompt engineering to create a clearer path when creating projects. Prompt engineering involves leveraging large datasets to come up with intentional results. The speaker recommends using this strategy for faster and more cost-efficient results. The speaker also suggests creating a package to offer rapid prototyping ideation services. This package requires skilled and experienced designers and involves a lot of work and research. Finally, the speaker shares an example of how they created a picture using prompt engineering to study the differences between the words feast, banquet, dinner, and meal.
