Global Greek Influence

By Panagiota Pimenidou

I am Panagiota Pimenidou (PhD in hydrogen production, MEng in Chemical Engineering), with over 15 years in international academia. The Global Greek Influence podcast aims to bring together international Greeks who talk about technology through research, innovation, the economy, geopolitics, entrepreneurship and (yes) history, which define and address our current and future challenges on earth and (possibly) in space. It’s their view, their perspective, that makes the difference.

Are zero emissions, zero?

Are zero emissions, zero?

In this episode we go shortly through some questions that really address the big question; that of “Are zero emissions, zero?”:

Are net zero and carbon neutral the same?  What are the characteristics of an effective net zero emissions target? Why is reducing real emissions preferable to achieving net zero emissions? What steps can we take to reduce our carbon emissions? Is implementing a net zero emissions target an effective approach towards addressing climate change? Is there a global effort to achieve net-zero emissions? How can we guarantee that commitments are translated into action? Can we expect to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 as planned?

Top Learn Moments

Top Learn Moments

Mimicking tissues and organs and fish dynamics, the forces of nature with simplicity and without simplification, maximising current technologies for more affordable offshore wind farms where population density is high and there is a shortage of available land, producing plant-based biofuels non-chemically are some of the top learning moments at the Global Greek Influence podcast.

Researchers may speak with modesty, presenting the advantages and disadvantages of their work. This does not mean that their solutions are not beneficial; they are not businessmen or marketers.

They produce patents that do not reach us because some industries might not want to invest in new processes and products as they prefer incremental improvements to their existing products and not real innovation.

What researchers need is an equitable approach by funding bodies, technologies businesses andindustries. That is the definition of symbiosis, between humans and nature, between the present and future.

Birthdays of humans, technologies, ideas and politics

Birthdays of humans, technologies, ideas and politics

What do birthdays have to do with technology?

Anyone and anything born: a human, a technology, an idea, reminds us of the beginning of a life cycle.

What is the future of AI in scientific research (ChatGPT- Large Language models), and why should it matter to all? Is there a future for engineering, science and technology researchers' innovation in politics?  Why, when innovation is born, should be co-developed and implemented with the active participation of engineering, science and technology researchers in politics?

The day a human, a technology, or a political action is born signifies a great promise. But it is all of us who determine their present and future.

A Christmas for curious minds: bonus episode

A Christmas for curious minds: bonus episode

As engineers, scientists, technologists, researchers in STEM and other researchers, we seek originality in science and its potential applications. As people, we fit into a role we choose. Christmas is a season we mostly reconnect with our people, also tend to look inwards and seek answers. How can we explain the new by studying the old?

In this episode with Marios Koutsoukos (PhD candidate soon to become a doctor of philosophy in the History of Religions in the Late Antiquity at the University of Liverpool, U.K.), we attempt to detangle our present conceptions, our connection to the past, ours and that of our ancestors, as the story of societies and cultures before us.

How is our perception of a theorem, an idea, or religion a definitive parameter that allows us to deviate from spirituality, a theory, a solution to a problem, a view of the world, and see ourselves for who we are?

Forging scientific communication for technological progress and democracy

Forging scientific communication for technological progress and democracy

In the past years, the scientific and research communities have been put in this awkward position to apologise for non-experts' spread of misinformation

including that scientists are corrupt because their facts do not align with what has been widely disseminated.

Either anonymously through social media or well-established show hosts selectively invite a single guest to promote a specific direction agenda rather than asking a panel of experts to allow their audience to draw conclusions.

Is it miscommunication, selective, or partially presented information to serve individuals' personal experiences and backgrounds, and what they are more willing to accept as relatable to them?

In this solo episode, I untangle the labyrinth of the social media role where anyone can use science for entertainment, sensationalism to boost self-worth and confidence blurred with professional recognition vs the accurate messages of science and how to promote the critical ability needed by the public to separate facts from interpretations not only in the field of science communication also for forging democracy.

Transforming mentoring in business accelerators

Transforming mentoring in business accelerators

A special to subscribers episode on Anchor FM.

Most doctorates and researchers can not secure an academic position, or they might find a career in the industry out of their scope or professional vision. Start-ups can become a creative space for science, engineering and technology researchers and an opportunity to develop their careers. Researchers, businesses and investors who get involved in business accelerators, also those creating those programmes, might ask themselves before, during and after:

What makes a business accelerator programme successful for supporting early-stage entrepreneurs becoming stable in the market?

Should we pay more attention to business development, infrastructure, network (including mentors), or financial support?

How could the transformation of mentoring bind all aspects of business accelerators together and deliver their purposes and those of the businesses to be "accelerated"?

Here, I condense my viewpoint on transforming mentoring in business accelerators as key to the programmes' success for all.

Marios Koutsoukos, a fiction author and PhD candidate in History of Religions in the Late Antiquity at the University of Liverpool, discusses the links of #populism with popular opinion and #governance in the late Roman early Byzantine Empire.

Does popular demand and aggression dictate governance or vice versa? Do politicians follow the crowd to maintain unity or coherence within a society, and then in the distant future, we see in history political decisions as corrupt by the governance? Did the role of philosophy finish with forming Christianity's theology?  Could philosophy and history show us how to avoid anti-science?

In the second and last part of the episode “The past defines us”I am with Marios Koutsoukos, a PhD candidate in History of Religions in the Late Antiquity at the University of Liverpool.

If Romans manipulated philosophy and history as we read it today.

How Plotinus, a famous Roman philosopher marked the end of logos and the beginning of faith, as we understand today.

What unique events we broadly know such as the Burn of Alexandria’s library and the destruction of Serapeum, marked.

As Marios concluded, those who did not know and study history were doomed to repeat it.

Bioeconomy and its implementation in the Greek energy roadmap

Bioeconomy and its implementation in the Greek energy roadmap

Maria Andrielou works with the Chemical Industry for over 10 years. Having a background in linguistics, became a communicator in cross-cultural and international relations led by her insensitivity to injustice. She was working for the European Chemical Industry Council in Brussels when she realised that everything around us and inside us is Chemistry, while communicating Bioeconomy to stakeholders, policymakers and the institutions. She has led the first-of-its-kind, in Greece, investment in large-scale production and biorefinery of microalgae biomass in Thessaloniki. Now, she is the Head of Marketing and Corporate Communication of Plankton First S.A. (Nano Algae Solutions AG). Maria is also a member of the Greek Bioeconomy Forum, led by the private sector and the only platform in Greece and in the Greek language that promotes bioeconomy.

We discuss:

why bioeconomy is not high in the Greek energy policy and strategy agenda; why research ideas as proof of concept need to go through the “valley of the death” before reaching the prototype stage and large- scale production; that achieving a more sustainable world, is not about informing but also changing the mindset of the public; no matter what young people study, to keep their eyes open and let themselves mesmerised from what life brings to them; doing our best and leave our mark for a better future.

We discuss:

How setting a balanced life model with milestones and having expectations can overcome a life-threatening disease, disability, and economic hardship.

Psychology and archaeology- where and how we came from; as a continuous narrative as the relationship between parents and children; what shaped our parents' decisions and their values, consequently ours; helping parents on how their children should become independent.

How does it feel to be a Greek in the diaspora and returning to Greece?

Energy policy and roadmaps- Part 2

Energy policy and roadmaps- Part 2

Today, you are listening to the second and last part of the interview with Dr Popi Konidari, Head of the Climate Change Policy Group (CCPG) of the Energy Policy and Development Centre at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens.

We discuss:

The past government’s market and economic connections among (i) research innovation in the Greek academia and the Energy Policy and Development Centre of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, and (ii) the real economy. Can an expert in renewable energy technologies become an energy policymaker? How can decision tools promote renewable energy to the public based on its perception of new technologies? Does rejection mean you did not get your idea, right? Decision support tools (DST) such as HERON can show how policies can work or give a future outcome and then use AMS to evaluate all policy options or more appropriate for the national framework to implement these policies (economy, behaviour, institutional partners, society). What do Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models using data and behavioural variables of the demand side, offer to the impacts of Energy Efficiency (EE) policies? How hard is it to proceed with research on energy and climate change in a Hellenic university? Is it a failure if you have to leave members of the team behind due to lack of funds?

Energy policy and roadmaps- Part 1

In this episode and next Sunday, in "Energy policy and roadmaps- Part 2", I am with Dr Popi Konidari. Dr Konidari is Head of the Climate Change Policy Group (CCPG) of the Energy Policy and Development Centre, whose acronym in Greek is KEPA, at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens.

In this first part of "Energy policy and roadmaps", we discuss:

Why energy policy and in particular policy regarding renewables, is not implemented as quickly as possible based on the synergy among the policymakers, companies and local societies?
Why does Greece lack a roadmap on energy policy and in particular that of renewables?
Could the energy policy at a national level affect climate change?
Are businesses that seek innovative solutions, not aware they exist in academia and research?
Why is Greece lacking in the implementation of renewable energy technologies despite its academic capacity and research innovation at a national and international level?

KEPA organises the 13th International Conference on "Energy and Climate Change" between the 7 and 9 of October 2020.
