In today’s episode, we welcome Camille M. Davidson, Dean, and Professor of Law at Southern Illinois University School of Law. Dean Davidson started as Dean amid the pandemic after serving as a judicial hearing officer for the State of North Carolina and as a tenured law professor and associate dean of academic affairs in faculty development in Charlotte, North Carolina. This year Southern Illinois University School of Law, founded in the public interest to serve the public good, celebrates its 50th anniversary. Dean Davidson tells us that as part of the celebration, the school will host activities for the next 12 months, culminating with a gala in the spring of 2023. Dean Davidson shares with us that, as part of the celebration, they have showcased and celebrated the 166 alums that are serving or have served in the judiciary in a wall of judges. Dean Davidson shares with us how she moved into legal academia, what prompted her to apply to be a dean, and how her experience has served her in being a dean. She gives us an insight into her priorities when she started her deanship, such as branding, diversity, and building a pipeline of students interested in law practice, and how those priorities have transpired throughout her deanship. Along with her priorities, she tells us about the joint JD and MD program they have at SIU and the courses she teaches. Dean Davidson also shares her predictions for legal education in the upcoming decade. She tells us that she thinks we will see more schools going hybrid and online. She also tells us that legal education will have to figure out how to deliver in non-traditional ways while adjusting to the need to learn on the job and adapt to the next generation bar. At Stetson Law, she has taught legal research and writing and advanced research and technology courses. Before becoming a professor, she was the associate director of the law library and coordinator of legal practice technology. Professor Chase shares with us how she transitioned from serving in leadership in the library at Stetson to teaching on the tenure track, a move which she considered during the pandemic, so she could fulfill her desire to be able to interact more with students. Professor Chase gives us insight into articles she has written that focus on prisoners and their access to justice through the research and technology that they have available. She tells us what excites her and troubles her about the topic and shares her suggestions for aiding prisoners in their access to justice. She tells us that there is a significant problem with access to information, a constitutional right for incarcerated individuals. She also discusses her latest book, Millennial Leadership in Law Schools: Essays in Disruption, Innovation, and the Future, which talks about the role millennials will play in shaping the future of legal education. Professor Chase shares how her students deal with the technology she has implemented in the curriculum to be more reflective of the technology used in the profession. She gives us some tips on some of the technology that is helpful to students and their future careers in the profession. Duplantier, Distinguished Professor of Law at Loyola University New Orleans, College of Law, a position she has held since 2017. Dean Landrieu shares some differences in teaching Common Law and Civil Law in New Orleans, and notes that although Civil Law is limited to Louisiana in the United States, it is practiced worldwide. Dean Landrieu shares with us her experience in private practice and serving 16 years on the bench, and how those experiences and her family's legacy led her to the deanship at her alma mater. She compares the roles of appellate court judge and being a dean of a law school, and how she continues to help educate jurists. Dean Landrieu explains the impetus for, and impact of, the Nancy Marsiglia Institute of Justice, which strives to expand knowledge about the law by teaching the constitution to lay people to reclaim civil discourse. She hopes that the Institute will become a model for law schools nationally. She also tells us about Loyola's experience working with law enforcement to provide training in tools that aid public safety, and her role as Chair of the ABA's Legal Education Police Practices Consortium, a consortium of 60 law schools, including St. Mary's University School of Law. Lastly, she shares with us her thoughts regarding the evolution of legal education in the coming decade, and her hopes that legal education stays predominantly in-person, particularly when it comes to community and relationship building, with the use of hybrid models to enhance and enrich those in-person experiences. In today's episode, we welcome three guests to discuss Penn State Dickinson Law's leadership and antiracist education: TaWanda H. Stallworth, MDiv, program manager for the Antiracist Development Institute, Professor Dermot Groome, and Anu Gupta, founder and CEO of Be More and a systems designer for the Antiracist Development Institute. The Antiracist Development Institute came out of several Penn State Law faculty resolutions that included adopting an antiracist approach to legal education in June 2020. The Institute built on the foundational work of Dean Conway and four Black women Dean colleagues who started the Law Dean's Antiracist Clearinghouse Project in 2020. Listen as she discusses the Clearinghouse and the Institute in detail in episode 57. Professor Groome explains why the faculty decided to create a race and equal protection in the law course and explains its development and implementation. Program Manager Stallworth tells us about the new initiative of a multi-volume series called building an Antiracist Law School, Legal Academy, and Legal Profession. She shares with us the vast collaboration behind the multi-volume series and the support it has received within and outside the academy. Systems designer Anu Gupta shares how thinking about racism as a system's problem that needs system solutions will help inspire more comprehensive reform. They share the development of course content and the multi-volume series, which helps form and shape the course content. They tell us that the goal of antiracism is a world where all of us are equal and can belong with dignity and humanity. To get involved, check out their website. In today's episode, we welcome Brian Gallini, the Dean of Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Oregon, a position he has held since 2020. He shares his experience becoming a dean during the pandemic and his transition from the University of Arkansas. Dean Gallini tells us that he was attracted by Willamette's innovation, nimbleness, and flexibility, which match his leadership philosophy. He describes Willamette's partnerships with different institutions that focus on providing a mentorship-based approach for admission. He also shares his ideas for alternative licensing and how he and others have been diligently working to explore alternative pathways in Oregon. He shares how members from all three Oregon Law Schools and other members of the Bench and Bar have come together to explore the possibilities that might make sense for Oregon. From this exploration, two things emerged, the Oregon experiential pathway and the supervised practice pathway, which he tells us are in the conceptual phase. Further, he shares how working as a hockey coach with the University of Pennsylvania and Arkansas for over a decade has impacted his dean's leadership, and he recounts some of those valuable lessons. Lastly, he shares his prediction for the evolution of legal education in the upcoming decade. He tells us that his aspirational vision is that ten years from now, there is an empirically accepted definition for minimum competence that outlines with transparency and clarity the measurable skills for newly licensed lawyers. Dwan Professor of Online Learning at Sturm College of Law at the University of Denver. Professor Thomson tells us about his new book—The Way Forward for Legal Education. In his book, he suggests several proposals that include abandoning the LSAT and instead developing new admission criteria, with more of a focus on teaching justice and service. Other suggestions he mentions are allowing admission to a larger cohort, adding something akin to California's Baby Bar at the conclusion of the 1L year, and greater integration and expansion of experiential learning throughout the curriculum. Professor Thomson also shares his weekly newsletter, called the Chalk Board Life, which he started amid the pandemic. He shares in his newsletter reflections on the core of teaching and how to preserve the heart in teaching regardless of the delivery method. He also tells us about the upcoming conference he and his colleagues are hosting in Denver, the Hybrid and Online Learning Pedagogy Conference, which will take place September 22-24, 2022, at Sturm College of Law in Denver. He shares with us how the conference came to be and what we can look forward to. Registration is still open. In today’s episode, we welcome Aliza Shatzman, the president and co-founder of the Legal Accountability Project, a non-profit aimed at ensuring law clerks have positive clerkship experiences and helping support and extend resources to those who don’t. Aliza shares with us her experiences with gender discrimination, harassment, and retaliation while clerking in D.C., the revocation of her dream job, and the exemption that judges and clerks have from Title VII that led her to co-found the Legal Accountability project on June 1, 2022, with Matt Goodman. She shares with us the reception she is getting for her non-profit from the various stakeholders, such as judges, former clerks, current clerks, student leaders, and law schools. She tells us the two initiatives the Legal Accountability Project is working on in collaboration with law schools beginning in the fall. The first is a centralized reporting database that provides anonymous information on clerkships, and the second is a workplace assessment of the federal and state judiciaries. Finally, she shares her thoughts on the evolution of legal education and her predictions for the coming decade. She hopes that this year, 10 law schools will partner with the Legal Accountability Project on the database and that more will partner with them on the workplace assessment, 5-10 years down the road. On a broader scale, she hopes legal education is more responsive to student needs. She is Dean and Professor of Law of the Quinnipiac University School of Law, a position she has held since 2013. She has been on their faculty since 1994. Dean Brown shares with us her role when the pandemic hit and how she served as interim provost at Quinnipiac during this time. She got to see it all from the provost's office. Instead of dealing with the day-to-day, she dealt with everyone on the management committee of the University, an experience which informs some of her work in her dean role. She gives us an insight into what they are doing at Quinnipiac, such as a 24-hour retreat for students called Beginners Wisdom: Integrating Personal and Professional Values, an idea that came from students in the Fall of 2012. It is for all law students, and they invite staff and alumni. During this retreat, they meditate, talk about change, how people change in law school, and talk about isolation and loneliness. Dean Brown also tells us about the new 1L course at Quinnipiac to help address the professional identity formation requirements called Foundations of Practice, which is a course focused on how students sustain themselves during the first year of law school and how to set a good foundation for your legal education.  Dean Brown also talks with us about the initiatives the Human Trafficking Prevention Program is undertaking with students playing a significant role. Elisabeth shares with us her passion project that developed during the pandemic, which includes helping educators and attorneys to communicate more effectively on video. She shares with us some tips on things to think about when presenting or teaching online as far as visual appeal. She tells us that an excellent way to make sure people feel connected is by having good audio and being on brand with your message. You want your background to complete your message, so make sure you are the focus of your video and keep backgrounds in the background. She also shares with us about her focus on people of color exemplars, diversity in legal education, diversity among faculty, diversity generally, inclusiveness, and belonging, how it shows up in her work and how we can help it show up in our work. Finally, she shares with us how these changes will impact the evolution of legal education in the coming decade and the movement from a synchronous, remote lecture to educational experiences that are more interactive, which is a focus on recreating what a lot of law practice work looks like. Dean Page tells us about the diversity of FIU and how FIU is plurality Hispanic, majority minority not to mention that roughly half of the student population are the first in their family to have graduated from a four-year college, making them first-generation law students. He also shares with us the law path program, which started in the Summer of 2018, student wellness, and some secrets on FIU’s success in bar preparation and passage. Furthermore, Dean Page shares FIU’s international law commission fellowships, which he started with professor Charles Jalloh several years ago, where students are sent to serve as fellows or externs at the International Law Commission in Geneva. He discusses his predictions on legal education, which are a focus on skill, and a lot less memorizing doctrine. Dean Sneddon, who has been a part of the faculty at Mercer since 2006, shares with us that in 2023 they will be celebrating their 150th anniversary.  Dean Sneddon tells us that part of Mercer’s commitment is preparing students for practice and preparing them to be strong writers. A writer is what Dean Sneddon believes best describes what a lawyer does. She tells us writing is part of our identity because we put ourselves on the page when we write. It is about thinking "I will make a difference with every word I choose to put on the page." It is to advance a position, make an argument, and make a difference, big or small. Dean Sneddon also shares with us her law review article Clause A to Clause Z: Narrative Transportation and the Transactional Reader, for which she received the 2020 Teresa G. Phelps Scholarship Award for Legal Communication. She shares with us the idea of making a transactional document more narrative, which makes it more engaging. Dean Sneddon also tells us some of the things Mercer is doing to prepare students for their career and how every student at Mercer majors in changing the world. Finally, she shares her thoughts on legal education in the upcoming decade and how there will be more of a connection to actual practice, experiential opportunities, and leadership training in the three years of law school. He is the founder of the Bassett Firm, a Dallas-based boutique law firm that has tried over 300 cases to verdict in motor vehicle accident, criminal defense, food-borne illness, non-subscriber employer liability and subrogation cases. He is also host of a podcast, Legal Grounds—Conversations on Life, Leadership, and the Law, and a published author of a very personal book, The Man in the Ditch—A Redemption Story for Today.  He tells us that being a lawyer is a vocation and shares with us what it is like to be a young lawyer in the Bassett Law firm, the essential doctrines in the profession, and the need to be a lifelong learner and to be comfortable with hard work. Mike shares his experience in law school and how he found his passion in the profession following graduation. His passion comes from helping and being there for his clients who end up in the ditch. He tells us that as lawyers, we need to understand that we cannot do this alone and must remember that we have a community all around us. We need to embrace the concept of forgiveness and compassion and be grounded in the idea of decency, particularly because we are blessed to have a legal education. Finally, he shares his thoughts about the evolution of legal education in the coming decade and the need to provide increased access to legal education, focusing on how to engage people remotely. She is the Dean and Levin, Mabie & Levin Professor of Law at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, a position she has held since July 2015. Dean Rosenbury shares the remarkable progress Levin College of Law is making, including a 200% increase in applications, 31 new faculty members, fundraising exceeding $100 million in private funds, and having six of the most accomplished and diverse classes in the law school's 113-year history within the past seven years. Dean Rosenbury shares some of the quick changes she and her team made to generate more applications, improve contacts with employers, and increase alumni outreach. She also explains how outreach to over 1000 alumni led to their $100 million in funds, through both large and small gifts. All of the successes since 2016 have meant a jump for the Levin College of Law of 27 spots in the U.S. News rankings, placing them among the top 25 law schools in the nation. Pratt, a national leader in diversity and inclusion and the holder of the inaugural Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Chair in Civil Rights, Race, and Justice in the Law at the University of Oklahoma College of Law, a position she starts this summer after four years as dean of Washburn University School of Law. Dean Pratt describes her journey to the dean position at Washburn after having spent considerable time at Penn State, noting that it was Washburn's strong history and commitment to inclusion that attracted her to the position. Dean Pratt shares the innovative curricular approach at Washburn that allows students to receive one-third of their JD degree through distance education. This enables students to spend their last year in residence wherever they intend to live and practice after they graduate and pass the bar exam. The distance education opportunity also allows them to enter the legal market sooner to get some experience in the kind of law they intend to practice through a paid externship in the local legal market. Currently, their first cohort taking advantage of this innovation is spread out among 12 different states across the nation. Dean Pratt discusses the conclusion of her dean position at Washburn at the end of spring 2022, and her new position in her home state of Oklahoma, serving as the inaugural Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Chair in Civil Rights, Race, and Justice in Law at the University of Oklahoma College of Law. UNT Dallas College of Law accepted its first class in 2014 and was provisionally approved in 2017. Dean Epps shares with us the commitment at the law school to first-generation students, diversity, non-traditional and underrepresented students, and practical skills. Dean Epps shares her background as a Marine and how those skills transfer to her deanship at UNT Dallas College of Law and to her professional identity. Dean Epps also tells us details about the class she used to teach on the death penalty and the new course she is working on putting together next year regarding court etiquette and what to do and not do in court. We also learn about the 3 jail cells in the law school building, one of which was occupied by Lee Harvey Oswald after he shot President Kennedy. In addition to his work in academia, and in large law firms and as mediator for organizational clients, Dean Tan brings with him the unusual experience of serving as Ambassador at Large for the U.S. State Department’s Office of Global Criminal Justice, where he oversaw the prosecution of war criminals in Sri Lanka, Rwanda, the Balkans, and Lebanon. During this podcast, Dean Tan shares his historical studies of mass atrocities and their relation to current conflicts in North Korea, Russia, and Ukraine, respectively. Dean Tan also opines as to the likely outcome of Russia's mass atrocity crimes in the global context and the International Criminal Court.  Dean Tan discusses some of the great things going on at Liberty, and the tremendously supportive community one finds there. He shares that although he has loved every position in his career, his favorite is being a dean because in working with students, he feels he has found the fountain of youth. Dean Fisher shares the three most serious challenges he has faced or is facing during his deanship at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. They include unrealized merger discussions with the University of Akron Law School; being reported by the ABA as out of compliance due to financial concerns related to additional staff hiring, something that has since been rectified; and a petition to change the name of the law school. He shares how this name change came about, and the serious work that has been done to ensure that everyone has a seat at the table, from students to faculty to alumni. Dean Waterstone shares his path to the deanship and the values that resonate with him at Loyola Marymount, including the commitment to experimental education and teaching, the commitment to meaningful outcomes, staying ahead of the curve in the way they teach and who they teach, and their commitment to social justice. Dean Waterstone shares that a part of Loyola Marymount's learning outcomes include learning about systemic inequality, and how their clinics are a visible manifestation of their commitment to social justice. One example includes the success for one clinic client, Andrew Wilson, who had served 32 years in jail for a crime he did not commit, and through the clinic's efforts was released. In under an hour Mr. Wilson was on their campus wearing a Loyola T-shirt, surrounded by his team of student attorneys. You will also learn about the part-time legal education program at Loyola Marymount, which follows a boot camp format.  Dean Waterstone shares his scholarship in disability law and the fantastic things they are doing at Loyola in their dedication to disability law. Conway, someone I admire and who has inspired me since before I was Dean. Dean Conway is the Dean and Donald J. Farage Professor of Law at Penn State Dickinson Law. Dean Conway shares her extraordinary efforts in starting the Law Dean’s Anti-Racist Clearinghouse Project, which launched in 2020, along with her colleagues, Dean Angela Onwuachi-Willig, Dean Kimberly Mutcherson, Dean Carla Pratt, and Dean Danielle Holley-Walker. Dean Conway tells us that this project was born out of the pain and frustration felt after the murder of George Floyd and other black and brown people, and the lack of protection under the law for them. She tells us how the strong bond between the five resonated throughout the entire legal academy, which gives all of us great hope that it will help transform the system of laws and society. You will learn how Dean Conway is changing the world with the Anti-Racist Development Institute (ADI). This complementary organization will educate subscribers on identifying and implementing anti-racist and anti-racism policies, practices. There are more than 31 law schools involved and 80 contributors from over 200 law schools who will write chapters for the book series, which is the platform for the ADI. Dean Conway shares with us the initiatives she has taken at her law school and the difference they have made, including an increase in the number of faculty of color from 12% to 30% since 2019. Dean Conway also shares how the support of her husband and the leadership team at Penn State University help her manage to be Dean of a law school, lead the way in anti-racism efforts, and keep up with the Clearinghouse Project, all while being a mom to a ten-year-old. Judith Daar, 16th Dean of Northern Kentucky University Chase College of Law, began her dean tenure in summer 2019, and during this episode she shares how she does the job while she and her husband commute every other weekend between Kentucky and California, where her husband has been hard at work with infectious diseases and aiding the pandemic fight. The pandemic made their commuting more challenging, and early on, she was often the only person on the flight with her puppy, Chase, named for the law school. Dean Daar is an expert in law and assisted reproductive technologies and during our conversation she shared some of the developments in that field for which she was the original casebook author. Dean Daar explains how recent legislation addressing abortion and expanded definitions of personhood sometimes has unintended consequences on assisted reproductive technologies like IVF.  Dean Daar shared her excitement about the gift just announced from Alumnus W. Bruce Lunsford for $3 million, the largest gift in the College's history, and one that expands the impact of his original gift that established the W. Bruce Lunsford Academy for Law, Business + Technology, an honors program that provides students hands-on and conceptual training in applications of law, business and technology. This gift, which triples the initial investment, will increase Lunsford Fellowships for students, and expand networking and placement opportunities for students and graduates, among other initiatives. Dean Fulton now leads the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law, the state school in a rural state whose graduates benefit from the second-lowest debt load in the country. USD prides itself on attracting and educating students who seek to excel, serve and lead, and the focus on servant leadership means that many of the positions in government include alumni from the law school. The education offered now includes legal writing requirements every year, starting with a 1L practicum to complement the criminal law class, and prepares graduates to serve as generalists, so they are suited for a small town or solo practice, or anything else they seek to do in the private sector or through public interest. Dean Fulton discusses the deep, personal connection that students in their 80-person classes develop with the faculty who relish the engagement with, and mentorship of, their students. Finally, Dean Fulton shares his predictions for the future of legal education, and the hope that law schools become less homogenous, and more reflective of their geographic location and community legal needs, and their own identity as institutions. Monroe County Board of Education, which established that educational institutions must respond to and address complaints of student-to-student sexual harassment.  Dean Williams discussed the beautiful new building that will house the School of Law and their new Master of Legal Studies that debuted in January 2022. She shared the social justice mission of the law school, and their significant clinic offerings, including those focused on Legal Access, Indigent Defense, Domestic Violence and Protection Orders, Entrepreneurship and Community Development, Innocence, Patent and Trademark, and cases actively pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He started his legal career as a litigator, policy analyst and community organizer. In this episode, we hear from Dr. Chad Christensen, Project Manager for the Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE) at Indiana University Bloomington, who develops and implements strategic initiatives to expand LSSSE's impact at law schools and on legal education.  Dr. Christensen shares the longitudinal data from the approximately 186 different law schools and more than 400,000 law students since LSSSE's inception in 2004, and describes the usefulness to law schools that choose to participate in the annual survey process. In addition to publicly releasing aggregate results on an annual basis, Dr. Christensen and his LSSSE colleagues collaborate with law schools seeking to interpret and analyze their own survey results and provide consulting services to schools seeking to maximize the law student experience.  This podcast is particularly timely as the recent results of LSSSE explore the impact of the COVID crisis on legal education, providing deeply disturbing findings from the 13,000 responding law students at more than 60 law schools. Responding students reported concerns about meeting basic needs like adequate food and paying their bills, as well as increased depression, anxiety, and mental and physical exhaustion, with significant disparities among different races and gender. Dr. Christensen digs into these heartbreaking results but also notes that students reported positive interactions with classmates and professors, despite the alternative delivery models for legal education required by the pandemic. Dr. Christensen shares how future iterations for LSSSE can further influence the evolution of legal education and provide increased insight into the law student experience. Brian has written three books, and during this episode, shares the experiences that inspired each of them. The first explored his decades of living with and recovering from eating disorders, entitled Shattered Image: My Triumph Over Body Dysmorphic Disorder. The second, The Addicted Lawyer, Tales of The Bar, Booze, Blow & Redemption, identifies the addiction and mental health issues that destroyed his successful legal career, and during the podcast, he shares the destructive nature of addiction and the rock-bottom circumstances which led to the start of his journey of recovery. Brian's experiences with addiction, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, and hard-fought recovery are revealed candidly, and the often-shocking stories make his resilience and recovery even more compelling. Brian shares these stories nationally through personal appearances, his books, and numerous columns in national media outlets in order to encourage students, attorneys, and others facing similar challenges to seek help and start recovery. Brian gives advice to current law students, and encourages all of us to look out for one another using an inquiry that starts by asking "Are you ok?" The study convened 50 focus groups of legal professionals, educators and students across the country in an attempt to identify the skills needed for practice, and what should be measured to determine entry to the Bar. Professor Merritt opines on the value of clinical education as a measure of readiness to be a member of the Bar, and recounts her own impactful experiences as a doctrinal faculty member supervising a criminal defense and prosecutorial clinic, respectively.
