[S2E1] Nonprofits PDX- Street Roots
In the first installment of his exploration into the work of Portland-area non-profit organizations, Yogev takes a look at a familiar staple of our community: Street Roots. Street Roots is an award-winning weekly street newspaper that humanizes our houseless community members in a city that has struggled to find solutions. Through investigative journalism, op-eds, vendor profiles, and more, Street Roots uncovers the consequences and impacts of policies on our communities while offering low-barrier income opportunities for some of our most vulnerable community members.
Come along as Yogev explores the impact of Street Roots on the houseless community through conversations with Street Roots vendor Mark, and Vendor Program Director Devon Pouncey.
[S2E0] The 2023-2024 Team
The start of the new academic year also means we have a new cohort of Student Organizers. We take some time to introduce ourselves to you and share some of our areas of interest that we'll be exploring over the coming year.
Welcome to Season 2 of our podcast!
[S1E5] Season 1 Reflections
This cohort of Student Organizers reflects on the past year and how they've grown. Thank you to Sady, Daniel, Nattie, and Yuvraj for all of their hard work and contributions to the Civic Leadership Development program.
[S1E4] International Student Employment
International students studying in the United States are subject to many rules and regulations that are unique to this population. One such restriction dictates who they are able to work for while they are a student. As a result, oftentimes the easiest path to employment is through their educational institution. This week, Yuvraj has a conversation about the experiences of international students employed at PCC.
[S1E3] English as an Other Language
What is it like navigating Portland Community College when English isn't your first language? Sady sits down with some members of our community to discuss what this is like and the linguistic/cultural challenges people are faced with when coming to the United States.
[S1E2] Getting Stuff Done
In this episode, Daniel explores what it takes to get stuff done: the challenges we face, how we overcome them, and what the outcomes mean for us. Daniel is joined by Environmental Studies and Community Based Learning Faculty, Taryn Oakley, as well as current Student Body President and Student Trustee, Suzan Nuri.
[S1E1] Online and In-Person Classes
While online classes are not a new concept in education, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a paradigm shift around the perceived value of online vs. in-person instruction.
In this episode Nattie interviews students, an instructor, and folks from the PCC Help Desk to learn more about the PCC experience around online and in-person instruction.
[S1E0] The 2022-2023 Team
Before we dive into the stories of PCC community members, we thought listeners might like to know a little bit about us. We're a team of four Student Organizers who work for the Office of Civic Leadership Development at Portland Community College, and this is our podcast!
