S3E1: Urge Surfing Meditation
Urge surfing is a technique for managing your unwanted behaviors. While practicing, you will ride out an urge, like a surfer riding a wave. Psychologist Dr. Alan Marlatt developed the concept of urge surfing as a metaphor to visualize the art of resisting cravings in addiction recovery but it can be used in any situation even with managing your anger. Just as waves can be intense, cravings can be intense, too. But like waves, they usually don’t last very long. In a study of smokers, Dr. Marlatt found that those practicing urge surfing were able to reduce their smoking by twice as much as those using willpower alone. Just as in other mindfulness practices, the goal isn’t to distract yourself from your thoughts and cravings. S2E5: How the Practice of Conscious Rest Improves Your Sleep
In this episode, Deb shares the meditative practice of "Conscious Rest." This is known by several names but they all off the same assistance to those who have insomnia, stress, anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain or depression. The practice is simple to learn and easy to practice. It can be practiced by anyone, regardless of physical ability or experience with meditation. Once learned, it becomes a set of tools for life. By engaging these practices over time, you nourish routines that support peace of mind, and enable your body and mind to easily fall into deep, restful sleep.

In this episode, Deb shares on the book, The Places That Scare You: A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times by Pema Chödrön. This will be the next book in the Peaceful Wellness Mindful Book Group. In the book, Pema Chödrön offers guidance for coping with the difficult moments in our lives--showing us how we can soften our hearts and open us to greater kindness. Deb cites her own protective walls that were built tightly around her from prior abuse, trauma, hurt, betrayal, grief and more. She realized that not only did the walls keep her safe but also it kept others outside. Through practice, she realized how precious her own heart really was.
