Rochester Retrospective 2: The Razzies
37 Jane Eyre adaptations will enter the ring, but only 5 will emerge triumphant! Along the way, we're ranking roasts, drag, slip-n-falls, and downright wackadoo, out-there adaptation choices. Buckle in, ladies and gentlemen. It's time to Razzie.

POV: You Go Out for Bread, And Then...: The 2016 BBC Radio Drama
Lillian and Piper discuss an audio drama that was recorded for Charlotte Bronte's birthday. It's wonderful and we loved it, but don't tell the IRS...or the NRA... or the IRA for that matter.

Rochester Senpai: The 2015 Manga
This adaptation is not only Kawaii, it's also a wonderfully true adaptation and a great intro to either Jane Eyre for Manga lovers, or Manga for Jane Eyre lovers.

And Now, a Word From the Fans: Reading Jane Eyre Fanfiction
Hollywood directors and multi-billion dollar studios aren't the only ones who get to adapt Jane Eyre, the fans have ideas and stories to tell too! On this week's episode, Lillian and Piper read and discuss three Jane Eyre fanfics.
Read along with us!
Some Enchanted Evening by Winam.
A Mended String by woolyhat.
Flesh of his Flesh by Laurielove. (This fic contains adult content. Rated M for mature.)

Palate Cleanser: The Count of Monte Cristo 2002
"Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next."
On this week's episode, Piper and Lillian discuss one of the most famous stories of betrayal and revenge ever written. There's also romance, hot air balloons and Dumbledore!

Go West, Young Podcasters! The 2023 Yavapai Musical
Eyre Buds reaches a new milestone as Lillian and Piper see their first in-person production of Jane Eyre! We were delighted to receive an invitation to the premier of the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center production of Jane Eyre the Musical. Join us as we recall our journey to the beautiful southwest, where the Jane's are talented, the Rochester's are daring and the music is top notch.
Tickets are currently available from April 21st-23rd. Reserve your seat here!

Fun with Ed and Jane: the 2004 Oddsocks Production
"If You Become A Doctor, Folks'll Face You With Dread,
If You Become A Dentist, They'll Be Glad When You're Dead,
You'll Get A Bigger Hand If You Can Stand On Your Head,
Be A Clown, Be A Clown, Be A Clown."

The Real Housewives of Thornfield: Discussing the "Other Women" of Jane Eyre
Finding out Rochester keeps Bertha in the attic is a surprise, but what about the other skeletons in his closet? In this week's episode, Piper and Lillian talk about Blanche, Celine, Giacinta and Clara; the role they play in the story, and how they shape our perception of Jane's love interest.

It's Not Over 'Til the Crazy Lady Sings: The 2002 Opera
Lillian and Piper discuss our first opera adaptation. It's also Lillian's first opera ever and she left the experience feeling more like a crying clown than a triumphant Valkyrie. Stay tuned to the end for a special lgbtq round of Jane Eyre fan-casting!

The Toby Stephens Army: Rewatching the 2006 Mini Series
In this week's episode, Lillian and Piper go back to one of our favorite adaptations. Spoiler alert: it still holds up. Though we have more to say about drag and how we really wish Toby would have committed to it and given us his best Lip Sync Battle performance.

Pabst Blue Ribbon Presents: The 1938 Radio Drama
Surprisingly, this week's episode about Orson Welles' first radio adaptation of Jane Eyre is rated S for sexy. Because there wasn't much to talk about so we fill the air with another game of Marry, F*ck, Kill, and it gets... a little spicy.

Palate Cleanser: Emma the 2020 Movie
Requested by popular demand, Lillian and Piper discuss Jane Austin's classic comedy of manners, Emma, in which a pretty girl who has everything realizes that maybe she doesn't know everything after all.

Jane Eyre Costumes with Victorian Historian Leila
After over a year of Bonnet Watch 1847, Lillian and Piper finally get a chance to ask all their fashion questions to someone who knows what they are talking about. Leila, the Victorian Historian, gives us the basics of 50 years of fashion history before breaking down the fashion of three adaptations: 1983 BBC Miniseries, 2006 BBC Miniseries, and 2011 Movie.

Discussing Wide Sargasso Sea
This unofficial prequel to Jane Eyre is Jean Rhys' story of Antonetta Cosway, the woman who will become Bertha, the mad woman in the attic. It's a novel that has become deeply imbedded in the discussion surrounding Jane Eyre and has accumulated its fair share of supporters and haters alike. This week, Lillian and Piper discuss Wide Sargasso Sea and the questions it attempts to answer.

Poetry in Motion: The Cathy Marston Ballet
In theater, when a character's emotion surpasses the power of speech, they must break into song to express themselves. When that's still not enough, they break into dance. Cathy Marston's Ballet adaptation is, "Jane Eyre without words," yet it managed to capture the raw emotion of the story on an entirely different level.

Branwell Sucks, I Guess: The 2006 Documentary
It's a rainy Thursday and your lit teacher is out sick, so the substitute wheels in a TV on a library cart and pops in a VHS tape. What are you watching? Why, it's a documentary about the Bronte Sisters, of course! Someone get the lights. And no talking during the movie! There will be a quiz at the end of class.

The Tiger's Teeth: Reevaluating Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender
In rewatching the 2011 adaptation of Jane Eyre, Piper and Lillian reminisced on why we love this movie, but we also discussed an interesting theory: when you remove concerning yet crucial narrative elements of Jane Eyre to appeal to a wider audience, what do you loose in return?

Palate Cleanser: Belle (2013)
Lillian and Piper discuss a movie that deals with big historical issues, incredible declarations of love, and kissing.

Buongiorno Bertha: The 1957 Italian Mini Series
"Non sono un uccello e nessuna rete mi avvolge!"
Lillian and Piper discuss our first Italian adaptation of Jane Eyre, in which there are love triangles and drama galore.

Why Jane Eyre? One Year of the Eyre Buds Podcast
Whether you relate to Jane, cry for Bertha, or fall in love with Rochester every time you re-read this novel, there are so many reasons why Jane Eyre has continued to capture the attention of its readers for 176 years. In our one-year anniversary episode of Eyre Buds, Piper and Lillian celebrate by discussing some of the story's most prevalent and provocative themes.

A Dance with the Dead: An Interview with Author Piper Cleaveland
Piper wrote and published a book and Lillian was kind enough to read it. It's not Jane Eyre related, but it does involve romance, mystery and a man named Edward.

A Very Jane Eyre Christmas
It's Christmas time at Thornfield and Jane and Rochester have invited the entire cast to join them for an evening of games and merriment! When a blizzard snows them in and the guests can't stand another round of over-the-top charades, Jane suggests they all exchange the gifts they bought for Secret Santa. I wonder what wonderful cadeaux are in store!

The One with Vincent Price: The 1950 Radio Drama
Happy Holidays, everyone! It's a short one this week since today's adaptation was less than 30 minutes long. Don't worry though, if the gypsy scene is your favorite, then there's lots to look forward to.
We were so thrown off by how short this episode was that we completely forgot to rate the adaption. So for those of you who are dying to know where this version ranks in the lineup, here are our scores:
Piper: 4/10 Family Prayers
Lillian: 4/10 Donna Reeds

Palate Cleanser: Meet Me in St. Louis the 1944 Movie
For many (like Piper) Meet Me in St. Louis is a holiday classic, while for others (like Lillian) it's a new movie full of buck wild situations and comical surprises. Regardless of our familiarity going in, watching and discussing this film left us both smiling. I think we can take on 20 men, don't you?

A Rather Unstable Arsonist: A Character Study for Bertha Antoinetta Mason Rochester
We decided to dedicate our first character analysis to our gurl in the attic: Bertha. This week, Lillian and Piper discuss how Bertha is portrayed in the novel and how her character has been interpreted over many years and adaptations. As is evident by the length of this episode, though her time on the page is brief, Bertha's presence in the novel is impactful, she haunts the story before we truly know her and turns the world upside down once we do.
Bertha's episode from the On Eyre season of the Hot and Bothered Podcast can be found here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2XXsYC5ICY6rpbKBhgxSZB?si=3th0VtleR-Gk7cKP3E-I0w

Going Back to Our Roots: Reevaluating Timmy D and Zelah Clarke
First impressions can be wild, as is evident from our dramatic reactions when reviewing our first adaptation of Jane Eyre: the 1983 miniseries. Piper was obsessed, Lillian was disturbed.
With a year's worth of content that we can now use as comparison, we decided to go back to where it all began and see how our takes on this version might have changed from our first gut reactions.

Reading the Novel: Chapters 34 through 38
Listeners, we finished the novel... And LOVED IT! In this episode, Lillian and Piper discuss the significant themes that make their final stand at the end of this story. The power of vulnerability. Mr. R: An Interview with Author Tracy Neis
This epic story brings the beloved characters of Jane Eyre to a modern setting where Eddie Rochester, a famous rock star, attempts to balance love and loss with the spirited and passionate women in his life. On this week's episode, we chat with Mr. R's author Tracy Neis about her rock and roll inspirations and personal take on this classic and cautionary tale.

Westinghouse Presents! The 1952 Made-for-TV Movie
What happens when an adaptation is almost identical to one we've previously reviewed? We fill the air with silly tangents and lots of chaos! We also forget how to geography and count in this episode so our scores at the end (which were meant for a X/10 scale) end up ranking this version very high with a whopping 4/5 and 3/5. Is it worth such high praise? You'll just have to listen and decide for yourself.

Reading the Novel: Chapters 28 through 33
Jane goes from a destitute beggar to an independent woman with a significant fortune. On the way she learns a lot about her identity and personal ethics, all while harboring a horniness that just won't quit.

Palate Cleanser - Sound of Music 1965
When Jane, I mean Maria, goes be Adele's, I mean the Von Trapp children's governess, she falls in love with the master of the house, Mr. Rochester - oops, the Captain. This week we talk about all the ways this, for sure not a Jane Eyre adaptation, sounds oddly familiar.

Live From Thornfield, It's Saturday Night! The 2004 SNL Sketch
In which Piper and Lillian do a very brief review of Jude Law's comical take on Mr. Rochester. We then play a few rounds of Stay or Nay? where we re-watch the Stay Speech from 4 of our favorite adaptions.
Would you stay for these men?

Reading the Novel: Chapter 27
Who were we kidding? This chapter deserves its own episode and wow, did we give it our all.
When entire philosophy, ethics, and theology classes can be taught around this one, crucial chapter, Lillian and Piper give their personal takes on the Jane Eyre moment that cemented this novel as a universal classic.

Mini Ep Plus Care So Much Jane Eyre with Charlene DeKalb
Piper and Lillian play another round of F***, Marry, Kill with Jane Eyre characters AND our palate cleansers. Then a special episode of a new podcast Lillian started called Care So Much with Guest Charlene DeKalb (episode details below).

Pilot the Dog: The 1983 BBC Mini Series (Part One)
