Today, I celebrate one of my all-time favorite conservation heroines, Wangari Maathai by reading her memoir Unbowed. I loved learning about Wangari's childhood, her past experiences and how they shaped her destiny to become a strong, independent woman who championed the environment and communities of Kenya. The Baddest Ass Women I Know-- Special Tell Me a Story (Zoo-notable S3E4)
I'm a published author! In 2021, I joined a program called the Narrative Project, where I met my guests for today-- Isabel Castro, Lauren Trantham, and Carrie Kenner. Throughout the year, we helped each other finish our stories, and now one of the fruits of our labor is out in the real world with the release of True Stories Vol. 5.
With the release of our new book, I gathered my group of Badass Warrior Women to celebrate, reminisce, and inspire anyone and everyone with a story to share. Spoiler: WE ALL HAVE STORIES TO SHARE!
Enjoy our conversation, but more importantly, let this spur you forward to start telling your story! If you want some help, or just a platform to share, let me know!

Indigenous People Day: Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer (Zoo-notable S2E44)
Indigenous People Day: Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer (Zoo-notable S2E44)
To celebrate Indigenous People's Day, I'm sharing the fantastic wisdom from the book Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer.
This is probably the most profound Zoonotable I feel I’ve ever done.
I have always revered Native Americans for their relationship with the earth. But to be honest, I’ve never felt connected to their way of life. It was THEIR way, and while I feel more connected to nature than I do to say, a city, I just didn’t feel I could practice the Indigenous principles. But with Braiding Sweetgrass, I feel as if I’ve been given permission, invited, and encouraged to let the traditions live on. Not to appropriate, but to revitalize a way of living that is pretty attuned with what I believe.
The main idea Robin brings up AGAIN AND AGAIN is that of RECIPROCITY, the two-way relationship between people and the planet. Give, share, and connect. I loved this book so much and I think you will to, so let’s dig in to Braiding Sweetgrass.

National Dog Week: Small Furry Prayer by Steven Kotler (Zoonotable S2E41)
National Dog Week: Small Furry Prayer by Steven Kotler (Zoonotable S2E41)
Welcome back to Zoo-notable. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve shared a new note, but I’m back for the next month or so before I go on my reading break. This week is National Dog Week, and today’s book is perfect to celebrate our canine best pals. I recently read some of Steven Kotler’s work, who wrote a great book called the Art of Impossible and other books. But I was intrigued by a title in his collection with a cute Chihuahua on the cover. It was titled A Small Furry Prayer with a subtitle Dog Rescue and the Meaning of Life. A peak performance guru talking about dog rescue? I read the back cover, and this prolific writer actually runs a dog rescue with his wife in New Mexico called Rancho de Chihuahua. Wow, I remember thinking, I believe this may be a kindred soul—a true animal loving writer who wants to help change the world.
A Small Furry Prayer is not your typical memoir. Kotler is a journalist by nature, and has interwoven some absolutely fascinating gems about our natural history with dogs (starting with wolves), pet ownership, and what it truly means to be an animal caregiver. He speaks of altruism, empathy, and even the compassion fatigue we can suffer from losing our beloved animals, often too soon.

Zoobiquity: Connecting Our Well-being with Animals (Zoo-notable S2E39)
Do animals feel anxiety? Do they cave under pressure, overeat certain foods, do risky behavior, become addicted to substances? More important than the specific answer to these questions is what can we learn as humans from the idea that wild animals can feel anxiety, cave under pressure, overeat, do risky behaviors, and become addicted to certain substances?
That’s what we’re going to tackle today as we discuss the book Zoobiquity.

National Zookeeper Week with Ken Ramirez and Eye of the Trainer (Zoonotable S2E37)
National Zookeeper Week with Ken Ramirez and Eye of the Trainer (Zoonotable S2E37)
National Zookeeper Week is here! On this special episode of Zoo-notable, I sit down with Ken Ramirez, animal trainer extraordinaire, Vice President of Karen Pryor Clicker Training, and author of The Eye of the Trainer. We discuss training animal trainers, meeting people (and animals) where they are, how punishment works and doesn't work, and not jumping to conclusions, among many other topics covered in The Eye of the Trainer.
From the book description on Karen Pryor Clicker Training site: "In The Eye of the Trainer, Ken Ramirez brings to life the power of positive reinforcement training to build trust and transform lives.
Ken is one of the most creative, cogent, and effective animal trainers in the world. His positive reinforcement training principles and practices are studied, replicated, and applied in settings as diverse as conservation efforts with elephants on the African plains, canine search and rescue in Texas, oil-disaster recovery for sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico, butterfly training in England, and animal shelters in Chicago.
In this inspiring, heartwarming, and hopeful series of essays chronicling his 40+ years of global exploration and observation, Ken shares not only the intriguing personalities of the animals that shaped his life, but how their unique challenges influenced his training choices, philosophy, and worldview.
A must-read for anyone who lives with, studies, or works with animals, Ken’s training wisdom, principled guidance, and practical advice call us to see the world through his eyes. Ken’s world is one where great training transforms the shy animal into the confident one, the aggressive into the calm, and the mistrustful into the trustful—and even the unsupportive boss into an ally.
See the world better. See it differently. See it through The Eye of the Trainer."

Queer Ducks (and other animals) by Eliot Schrefer (S2E34)
Queer Ducks (and other animals) by Eliot Schrefer (S2E34)
We end June with a special Pride Month celebration of LGBTQ representation in the animal kingdom and the fascinating book Queer Ducks by Eliot Schrefer.
This groundbreaking illustrated nonfiction title from two-time National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Eliot Schrefer is a well-researched and teen-friendly exploration of the gamut of queer behaviors observed in animals.
A quiet revolution has been underway in recent years, with study after study revealing substantial same-sex sexual behavior in animals. Join celebrated author Eliot Schrefer on an exploration of queer behavior in the animal world—from albatrosses to bonobos to clownfish to doodlebugs.
In sharp and witty prose—aided by humorous comics from artist Jules Zuckerberg—Schrefer uses science, history, anthropology, and sociology to illustrate the diversity of sexual behavior in the animal world. Interviews with researchers in the field offer additional insights for readers and aspiring scientists.
Queer behavior in animals is as diverse and complex—and as natural—as it is in our own species. It doesn’t set us apart from animals—it bonds us even closer to our animal selves.

How to Be a Good Creature by Sy Montgomery (Zoo-notable S2E23)
How to Be a Good Creature by Sy Montgomery (Zoo-notable S2E23)
Sy Montgomery is an award-winning author who lives in New Hampshire with their border collie Thurber and a flock of hens, known as the ladies. You can visit her online at symontgomery.com, on Instagram @sytheauthor, and on Twitter @sytheauthor.
"Understanding someone who belongs to another species can be transformative. No one knows this better than author, naturalist, and adventurer Sy Montgomery. To research her books, Sy has traveled the world and encountered some of the planet’s rarest and most beautiful animals. From tarantulas to tigers, Sy’s life continually intersects with and is informed by the creatures she meets.
This restorative memoir reflects on the personalities and quirks of thirteen animals—Sy’s friends—and the truths revealed by their grace. It also explores vast themes: the otherness and sameness of people and animals; the various ways we learn to love and become empathetic; how we find our passion; how we create our families; coping with loss and despair; gratitude; forgiveness; and most of all, how to be a good creature in the world."
We'll discuss the big ideas of realizing we are all one, opening your heart, conquering fear, healing in nature, and the importance of play.

Quest for Tears with Author Seán Dwyer
Quest for Tears with Author Seán Dwyer
In this special Zoo-notable, I speak with author Seán Dwyer and his remarkable story A Quest for Tears, about surviving and learning to thrive after a traumatic brain injury. We discuss his Seán 2.0, and how, after a traumatic life event, we will never be the same person we were, and how this is OKAY.
If you are struggling with TBI, medical issues, or life events, know that you aren't alone, and there are those who can support you, encourage you, and help you heal. Seán's book showed that there is hope, and there is life after trauma.
Want a copy for yourself? Seán has books on sale on his website. Support a local author and help spread the word about this very important message.

Celebrating Black History Month with my favorite conservation hero, Wangari Maathai. She is the Nobel Peace Prize winning founder of the Green Belt Movement, and an activist for women's rights as well as environmental protection. Wangari is also where I first heard the remarkable Hummingbird story that shaped a lot of my conservation behavior, including my ideas about conservation fitness (connect to the earth in a healthy and positive way!).

For this special Christmastime episode of Zoo-notable, I'm sharing my absolutely favorite book series of all time, the Harry Potter books by JK Rowling.
This series is one of the best-selling series of all time, and for a good reason. They are masterfully written and tell one helluva a hero's story. Rather than pick one book within the series, I chose an idea from each of the books. Let me know what you think!
I mention in Big Idea #5 from The Order of the Phoenix the Wizard Rock band Harry and the Potters and their song The Weapon. Check them out and welcome to the Harry Potter Fandom!

Zoo-notable S2E11- Zookeeper Dreams and Travel Extremes
Zoo-notable S2E11- Zookeeper Dreams and Travel Extremes
This was hands down one of my favorite interviews I've done all year. Lynn is an inspiration to all those who wish to dedicate their lives to caring for animals and inspiring conservation of endangered species.
Throughout her zoo career, Lynn Killam has experienced everything from witnessing the birth of a baby orangutan to chasing down an escaped tapir in the middle of the night. She has spent forty years working with animals and traveling to remote rain forests of the earth to see them in nature. From colorful descriptions of the sometimes eccentric characters making up the zoo world to essays on her encounters with wild animals, this is an emotional and gripping look at the realities of zoo life and traveling to see wildlife in foreign lands.
In our discussion, we discuss learning on the job, learning from our mistakes, conservation of our favorite animals, eco-tourism and good zoos always progressing.
