Rethinking Entrepreneurship for Africa's Realities - with Dr. Gaidi Faraj
Who defines what Entrepreneurship looks like in Africa? And how do those definitions serve to enhance or restrict the progress and benefits of Entrepreneurship on the African continent? Are there peculiarities Africa has that make entrepreneurship different in this landscape, tailored to meet different needs and engineered by different motivations? How do people become more entrepreneurial and shape entrepreneurship and the future of work in Africa?
In this latest episode, my guest is the brilliant Dr. Gaidi Faraj whom I have had the pleasure to work with across a number of different platforms. We talk about his background, perception, and practice of entrepreneurship, how entrepreneurship in Africa can be practiced to create opportunities for others, and importantly, why and how to shape entrepreneurship and the future of work in Africa. I hope that you enjoy the episode!
About Gaidi Faraj Ph.D
Gaidi’s passions lie at the intersection of teaching innovation, entrepreneurship, and futures thinking while applying these same skills to systems building across the African continent. He is closely acquainted with the issues of developing and revising higher education products to keep up with a fast-changing world of work so that programs remain relevant and fit for purpose. He has thought about how curriculum design in areas of entrepreneurship and innovation at the undergraduate and graduate levels must confront issues of leapfrogging inequality. In his role at ALU, he led the design and launch of ALU’s signature interdisciplinary program, Global Challenges. The Global Challenges program aims to empower students to become leaders and agents of change in the world. Students pick a mission, not a major, and identify a problem or challenge that they want to solve for their community. Their course work is then centered around that particular challenge.
Gaidi is a multidimensional manager, educator, trainer, and team leader who has extensive experience working within the nonprofit and private sectors. People and team management is one of Gaidi’s core strengths and he knows how to motivate and inspire diverse groups. Adept at identifying effective strategies to resolve conflict and at managing difficult interpersonal situations, Gaidi is comfortable adapting to a wide range of people and being open to different values, attitudes, and personalities.

Jobert is passionate about infusing entrepreneurial thinking into young people early in their developmental journey and he in fact talks about how entrepreneurial activity could be used to prevent other delinquencies including teenage pregnancy, those young people are usually involved in. It is all about finding problems and proffering and creating solutions according to Jobert.
