29. Recent Science on Building Self-Esteem & Confidence with Tobias Johnson

A mind-blowing episode on the recent science that many scientists in the 90’s or early 2000’s would have scoffed at on building self-esteem and confidence in a way that’s sustainable. Thought-provoking indeed.

Tobias is an online coach who helps people transform their health & physique. He is also a published scientist, with his research focusing on how to overcome self-defeating behaviour. Tobias studied Neuroscience at the University of New South Wales, graduating with First Class Honours.

28. The Neuroscience to Building Discipline (in simple terms) with Tobias Johnson

28. The Neuroscience to Building Discipline (in simple terms) with Tobias Johnson

Building discipline is a very abstract idea, and often misunderstood for grit. Discipline is not grit (as Tobias alludes to). He shares a follow-on framework that can be used (backed by science) to help us build the disciplinary muscle so that we can gain more control over our life in a healthy way that adds wellbeing, rather than taking it away.

Tobias is an online coach who helps people transform their health & physique. He is also a published scientist, with his research focusing on how to overcome self-defeating behaviour. Tobias studied Neuroscience at the University of New South Wales, graduating with First Class Honours.

27: A Published Scientist Shares a Secret Key to Discipline with Tobias Johnson

This often-not-talked-about key was enlightening for me. It’s helped me see discipline in a completely different light that I feel will be life changing for many of you who take action on the brilliant notes Tobias shares. A lot of us (including myself) had it all wrong.

My Unbiased Findings on the Vaccine

My Unbiased Findings on the Vaccine

These are simply my findings. From someone who didn't see the point, to someone who was anti, to someone who simply went and got it. I share my reasons in the episode. I felt a sense of responsibility to share my findings, as this may help someone listening to find some ease and let go of some fear. If this serves you, please share it.

I am writing this a few hours after my first jab, and I'm feeling sweet. I'm not pro or anti vax, I'm for humans. Thus, my shares are unbiased.

Below are the links to the studies and articles I touched on in this episode.

I did my best to find studies that weren't government funded so we could ensure unbiasedness... however, a couple naturally were still govt funded, as studies focused on these areas are still limited.

I am not a doctor, and this is not medical advise. Please do your own research, and make the decision that you feel is best for you.

Confidence: The 5 Pillars

Confidence: The 5 Pillars

A commonly sought out quality, confidence. It's something that I was not gifted with, it was developed through the steps laid out on this episode. From being the slouched over, shy, stuttering individual that I was, over the years I have built a strong sense of confidence.

Confidence is not to be mistaken with cockiness, for they come from completely different foundations as we will touch on in the episode. I will cover the 5 pillars of what builds unshakable confidence, and the key isn't through not giving a f*ck.

I guarantee, so long as you utilise the tools and 5-steps shared in this episode (and consistently with intent), that within the space of a week, you will already start to feel more confident within yourself. Change starts when you do. Get at it.

I would love to hear how these implementations go for you. Message me on IG with the changes you create, I'm excited to hear about your transformation!

Freedom From Suffering

Freedom From Suffering

Freedom from suffering. Yes, this is entirely possible. I used to suffer intensely from anxiety, depression, loneliness, solitude, and so much more. I have found greater freedom from this suffering through a lot of inner work. This has come from the teachings in both science and spirituality. From both studying the brain, and from Buddhist Monks.

Today, I dive into what suffering is and the four key steps you can take to start to create greater freedom from suffering itself.

Join myself and Selena this Saturday (17 July 2021) in Takapuna, Auckland, New Zealand, as we do the very first LIVE podcast show in Pocket Coach history. The time and details will be shared on both the @coachkezza and @thepocketcoach Instagrams.

Dopamine, Serotonin, Endorphins, Oxytocin - The why, what, and how

Dopamine, Serotonin, Endorphins, Oxytocin - The why, what, and how

There's a lot of misinformation out there about these "happy chemicals". I stumbled across an image on Instagram sharing a lot of half-truths on these, and quite frankly, it can limit one's ability to enable optimal levels of happiness in their life. I thought, "it's about time that I jumped on and spoke directly about these chemicals, as to what they really are, why they're there, and how to properly stimulate the create them". So, I did.

Here's a fairly succinct episode in some relative depth on the why, what, and how of these "happy chemicals". I highly recommend taking notes. In the future, I will go into extra detail on the chemicals individually so I can cover more ground on each one.

Happy listening!

The Science to a Happy Brain

The Science to a Happy Brain

What even is happiness? This must be defined by you first. This is a recorded webinar I ran to help those interested in bringing about more happiness in their lives to understand how it works in the brain, and what they can do to feel more of this seemingly difficult to sustain emotion we call happiness.

Neuroscience is often overcomplicated. Here, we simplify the way neuroscience works in the realm of a "happy brain". We also dive into tools, practices, and simple habits that you can adopt to enable more happiness in your life.

The end segment of this episode is answering questions that you cannot hear being asked around happiness.

1. Please repeat what you shared about "what is happiness?".

2. What are the chemicals that relate to happiness?

3. What's the difference between gratitude journaling and future journaling? And, how do we change what happens at the deeper layer of the mind?

Understanding the Brain for Mental Health - PC55

Understanding the Brain for Mental Health - PC55

Understanding how the brain operates is so important for understanding mental health. With this understanding presented in this episode, you will then be able to practically apply the tools shared in this episode to help you to benefit your mental health in the most optimal way. Simply applying tools without understanding why can lead to a lack of effectiveness and an improper application of the tools altogether.

We discuss neurotransmitters, hormones, and regions in the brain that all correspond with poor mental health. We also discuss natural processes that would normally be called "biohacking", but is really a process that is already a part of the brain, we're just accessing it through a natural process.

Tune in to hear how you can optimise your mental health with simple and practical steps anyone can do.

This is the recording of a webinar I ran due to the large amounts of people in the non-profit I co-own sharing their enhanced struggles during this 4th lockdown here in Auckland. This is not just for Covid, this is for life.

Ryūkyūan healer: Sakula Costar - Embodying Confidence, Self-Love & Internal Balance - PC54

As a women who has faced the struggle of needing to put up a front of worthiness in order to be accepted by those around her, Sakula speaks to us about the challenges that we can all resonate with of feeling lesser than. She shares her journey of uncovering these masks of confidence and strength, and how one can learn to come away from anxiety by first becoming vulnerable. Through vulnerability, awareness grows, and through awareness lies the key to unwinding the anxiety that's present for many of us.

In this masculine dominant world, an internal imbalance is common amongst us, and many find it difficult to "feel" their emotions fully. We discuss how one can learn to develop greater emotional stability and intelligence in order to build a greater sense of true self-love, not the fake stuff we see on social media.

Join us as we dive into the Ryūkyūan healer's profound journey from anxiety and false confidence, into a genuine example of what it means to be a thriving, empowered, and fiercely loving human. Guy and girls, I guarantee you will all take something away from this interview.

This is the last episode of 2020. We will be back on the 10th of January 2021. Have a beautiful Christmas and New Years all of you!

James Cameron - From Depressiveness to a Thriving Mentality - PC 48

One of the most inspiring men that I know. James Cameron lived a life of alcohol, regret and suffering. Having 10 beers and half a bottle of red wine a night when he was 18, James not long after experienced his father’s death. Reacting to this, James nearly killed himself alongside another family in this decision to end things. However, reaching a turning point in the final few seconds, James managed to go from suffering… to thriving.
On his journey, not only did he face immense pressure business and relationship wise, he also had tremendous past trauma he was still working through. Even after building a 7-figure business on the back end of 70-100 hour work weeks, he found that this was just not how he wanted to live.
James spent 2 years in a Buddhist monastery, has worked closely with a coach for years, and has done some intense inner work in order to cultivate the man he is today. He has coached myself for over a year, and many others (some programs reaching $180,000 per year - he’s another level). The quality of the results that James creates not just for himself, but those around him, is noticeable in the quality tools that are shared on this episode. Tune in as James shares how he went from depressiveness, to a thriving mentality.

Troy Casey (Certified Health Nut)- How Breath, Meditation, Fasting & Cold Improve Mental Health - PC45

From divorce, issues with alcohol and drugs, sleeping on the couch and struggling with his mental health, Troy Casey (aka. The Certified Health Nut) transformed his life with certain aspects of enhancement. Troy has lived and worked in the Amazon rainforest with local tribes for over 8 years, practiced natural medicine and healing, learned from Maori healers, studied Vipassana meditation in 111 days of silence and has trained in Ashtanga Yoga. Du'Plessis Kirifi: A Rising Star's Battle for Joy - PC38

Du'Plessis Kirifi: A Rising Star's Battle for Joy - PC38

The Hurricanes openside flanker Du'Plessis Kirifi, or as we refer to him on the show “Dupes”, found himself in far more depth than he could handle during his struggle in “making it”. He refers to a time when he would drown himself in the distraction of alcohol to escape this hopelessness and these feelings of confusion and being lost, as he felt his dream being swept away from him. Amongst the overwhelm, he managed to find clarity, he managed to find success. But, how?

Join us as we take a deep dive into Dupes’s life as he strived from club rugby, to a rising Super Rugby star, and there’s hype around him possibly making it all the way to the All Black Team. Tune in to see how Dupes has taken himself from this lost and confused place, to finding hope, understanding and contentment within the chaos. He points out key areas that have allowed him to do this, so that you can take away and practice these tools for yourself.

NOTE: I (Kieran Hedley) as the host of this podcast, actually had a puff of weed from a bong the night before as an experiment not thinking it would affect me much. There was a lot of THC (a psychoactive part of cannabis). I haven’t smoked much in my life (aside from a wild time when I lived in California), so the THC made me considerably vacant compared to my usual self for a whole 72 hours. I even struggled to converse with anyone. This podcast was less than 12 hours after my cannabis experience, which made for a very interesting and unique interview experience. Tune in to see if you can hear my struggle as I interview Dupes. He handles this incredibly well and was very welcoming to my different self.

Aaron Myers - Acceptance within Anxiety? - PC30

First you find it, then you feel it, then you face it, then you heal it. This was a huge lesson I learnt through my journey of healing anxiety. It’s a process that I tried to cut short and go straight to the healing of anxiety. Unfortunately (as Aaron relays) it’s not that simple. If it was that simple anxiety wouldn’t even be a thing!

Through something called ‘Radical Acceptance’, we can come to a place where anxiety is no longer a place of no return, but a place of learning and understanding… which very shortly evolves into a state of growth; not regression.

Aaron Myres; a previous client and now friend of mine grew up in the chaos of loneliness, self-doubt and constant simmering anxiety that seemed to brew up over time. He’s done wonders over the period we worked together in our coach-client relationship, and has come out the other side in consistent growth and expansion. I am beyond proud of his progress.

If Aaron’s story resonates, then please feel free to reach out to either Aaron or I. You are not a burden to either of us in letting us know your struggles.

If guidance from anxiety to mental and emotional freedom is something you seek then you can message myself on the contact details below for further details.

Kaylyn Gooslin - Facing Trauma & Finding Self Love

Trauma is a more common experience than one may think. Many face traumatic situations, but become so stuck in the belief of "this is the only way" that they feel they can't even tell a family member about their struggles. It's such a dangerous place.

Self love, alongside various other healthy attributes were lacking in Kaylyn's life at one point. There was a massive gap in where she was believing her road was meant to go, to where her intuition wanted to take her. She discusses a few not-so-talked-on topics on the healing that she has been through and how she coaches her clients to heal. It's essential to not just understand that healing is possible, but to be open minded as to how you can go about it.

Mike Gardner - Finding Your Fire - PC20

Find your fire. What is your passion? And is this your passion because it is what you believe will bring the respect of others? If not, then dig deeper and find the REAL fire. It's in there. You just have to find it.

Mike talks about his experiences in self doubt. About how what he believed brought him happiness, and how he went through times of emptiness based off of an unfulfilled path that he was on. He has proceeded into helping others find their true fire, and helping people make themselves better selves. It's an incredibly relatable journey that many of you might find you're meeting him halfway with this one. So tune in to see how he's personally overcome this emptiness and lack of fire within.

Brian DeCosta on Eating Disorders & Image Obsession - PC14

Brian DeCosta has big biceps and an even bigger heart. He's an amazing human being who's incredibly grounded and humbled as a fitness influencer. Even with his success in the fitness industry, social media and as an entrepreneur, he stays true to his beliefs and values more than one would believe. With over 127k on Instagram alone (at the time of recording), growing around from 80k in just over a month! Also living with the most spectacular view of LA from the pristine location of Sherman Oaks... His hard work is undeniable.

He's come from 4 years suffering from bulimia, an eating disorder that entails making yourself throw up after eating. This is generally triggered from the fear of disliking one's own image, yet the addiction to food is undeniable. So the clear option one may come up with is to throw it up after eating it. It's a scary world, but even I've done this a couple of times post competition in the past.

Brian shares the darkness this brought upon him and how he went on to overcome this issue. He's now on a mission to not only help those with eating disorders, but also those who struggle around food and time in general, but want to achieve a fitter, healthier and stronger self - mind and body.

The Science to Healing Anxiousness & Negative Thoughts - PC12

The Science to Healing Anxiousness & Negative Thoughts - PC12

There's a science behind everything. Whether it's health based, thought based, or even the science behind a belief, we now have the resources to find out why these things occur, and how they can be reprogrammed.

An example of this is the clump of cells that make up a belief. There's a literal neurological response that occurs leading to us producing this belief any way we can, hence our constant run ins with repetitive situations. This is why we recreate our circumstances based off that singular belief of "I'm not good enough" or "this person will leave me for someone else". These beliefs are our truths, and we go to the depths of actually manifesting situations to prove us right.

This episode is about reprogramming the subconscious neurological patterns that occur and why it's important that we do so. Something as simple as a new experience creates a new neurological pathway in the way. Then new science showing mindfulness activities improve grey matter in areas of the brain that host our decision making, focus, emotional regulation and so many other mechanics, shows us how we can alter the brain's literal way of working.

Everything learnt through this episode in the brain region are from the workings of brain researchers Dr. Daniel Amen and John Assaraf.

The Secret Science of Morning and Evening Routines - PC11

The Secret Science of Morning and Evening Routines - PC11

Morning routines prep you for the day at your most vulnerable time. Evening routines put you in a good state to wake up so that you're more likely to implement the morning routines effectively.

Most of us spend our time focusing on our problems and the stresses in our lives. This is normal, this is human, it's also programmed into us. Instead of fearing for the lion or tiger in the woods 20,000 years ago, we're fearing for the loss of our job, a fight with our partner or a rejection. This becomes our focus, this becomes our energy. Where focus goes, energy flows.

The purpose of the morning is to switch focus from our problems to gratitude and optimal bliss in our daily situations. There's a science behind this through our Reticular Activating System (RAS), a part in the brain that send energy towards our focuses, and we subconsciously manifest these focuses. Many techniques in these routines are also there to help decrease inflammation, leading to a better cognitive and hormonal state, making you less susceptible to mental health issues.

Start by choosing the first 3 tips that I suggest and start implementing them tomorrow. I guarantee you will notice the difference instantly in your day once you give these a chance.

One Thing You Need to Build Self Worth - PC10

One Thing You Need to Build Self Worth - PC10

The one thing you need to build your self worth. That's promises. Believe it or not self worth and self confidence are two different pieces of the same family. They're not built in the same way. Confidence is bred externally by putting yourself in situations that make you uncomfortable and working through them. Worth is bred internally by constantly making promises to yourself and keeping them.

However there's a danger here that needs addressing. If you tell yourself you're going to do something, and you don't do it, this is a form of self betrayal. Self betrayal leads to less trust in yourself. You therefore lower your belief in yourself in handling situations that are uncertain. If you have no control in the situation, you start to feel anxious. This is where anxiety breeds from. This frequent confirmation in not being able to handle uncertainty by not following through with tasks you give yourself.

Following the tips in this episode, I teach you the step by step process of how you will start on your journey of overcoming anxiety, building trust in yourself to handle uncertainty, and eventually establishing a high level of self worth.

This isn't an overnight process. However, if you keep at it, it's inevitable that you will heal.

Nicole LePera - Mental Illness is not an Illness - PC8

Nicole LePera also known as The Holistic Psychologist is a deeply experienced and renowned player in the mental health scene. She's recently exploded on Instagram because of her scientific and truthful approach to what was quotes mental illness, now shown to be curable subconscious issues created from old wounds.

We discuss how issues such as depression and anxiety can be temporarily freed from the horrible symptoms we experience through medication such as SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). However in the frequent consumption of these, our body becomes adaptive, and then requires excess stimulation or consumption in order to produce these feel good hormones. This does not solve the underlying issue of the true mental health issues we face as humans. Our mind needs to undergo a a lifelong phase of self healing, an expression Nicole has come up with to embody the idea that we are responsible for the healing of our own issues, and that it's possible no matter how big the scars.

Some great practical tips for overcoming these issues on your own are also discussed, as well as why we as humans are addicted to our problems, and our most common fears that we face in today's society.

You can find Nicole LePera at https://yourholisticpsychologist.com/ and via Instagram @the.holistic.psychologist

I highly recommend reaching out to her if you're in need of therapy, as I myself have done with her in the past. Pay attention to her Instagram posts, as there is so much untold truths being showcased on her page that today's society still doesn't talk on enough.
