The Hard Way - with Luke Bhencke - A new course exploring Gurdjieff's Fourth Way
A deep conversation and a plug for Luke’s New course: https://www.parallax-media.com/courses/the-hard-way-with-luke-behncke In the early 20th Century, Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff brought an ancient system of personal transformation to the western world known as the ‘Fourth Way’ or the ‘Work’. He claimed that this system was the source of all spiritual traditions and now adapted for the modern world. Its focus is on the individual and community to understand the energies and forces of their nature through direct experience. In doing so, it would become possible to contact a different order of reality that can deepen the experience of life. Gurdjieff was clear that it is the most difficult work that anyone can undertake, but also the most productive. It calls for relentless authentic questioning and a discipline of special efforts that can enable a quality of relationship that nothing else can give. Gurdjieff affirmed that a sustained work of this kind would accelerate the necessary transformation of men and women to meet the demands of a responsible life while fulfilling their essential purpose. Join Luke Behncke in practically exploring some of the tenets of the Work on Gurdjieff’s Fourth Way - THE HARD WAY - from the Parallax Academy. Live sessions will be recorded, and participants will have access to a video of each recorded class. Participants will have one-on-one interviews with the instructor. Subscribe to our Substack: https://parallax.substack.com/ Parallax: https://parallax-media.eu Brendan Graham Dempsey is a writer, poet, farmer, and the director of Sky Meadow Institute, an organization dedicated to promoting systems-based thinking about the things that matter most. He holds a BA in religious studies from the University of Vermont and a master's in religion and art from Yale University. He is the author of the 7-volume Metamodern Spirituality Series and, most recently, Metamodernism: Or, The Cultural Logic of Cultural Logics. His primary interests include theorizing developments in culture after postmodernism, productively bridging the divide between science and spirituality, and developing sustainable systems for life to flourish. All of these lead through the paradigms of emergence and complexity, which inform all of his work. Tomas Björkman is an entrepreneur and financier, and has over the past 25 years built innovative international companies in the areas of banking and real estate. His entrepreneurship combined with a keen interest in both society and science led to the creation of the the Ekskäret Foundation in 2008. Tomas himself describes in the forewords of the book ‘Changing the world we create’ why he started and is still very involved in foundation: “In my twenties, I had the choice between an academic career in theoretical physics or the world of commerce. I chose the latter and spent twenty-five years in business. Eventually, I sold my company to one of Switzerland’s larger banks continuing for a time to serve on its board. But the call of the world of ideas was irresistible. My background in theoretical physics and as an entrepreneur in information technology, investment banking and property development had allowed me to learn about and view our existence from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. My personal drive increasingly became to unlock the hidden structures of the world around me. I sought to bridge many academic fields including cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology and sociology. I started searching for connections that form the evolving whole. This curiosity led me to spend a decade researching and writing “The World We Create”. I also established the Ekskäret Foundation to facilitate the co-creation of a more conscious society.

Deep Future #5: Ghosts, Cracks and the Art of Living (with Nora Bateson and Susanne Cook-Greuter)
In many ways, our understanding of and our relationship to our future forms and shapes us. Yet there is a subtle feeling that this relationship with the future itself is currently changing. We are collectively confronted with a lot of problems that are already here or are approaching us fast from a horizon before us, And yet we know that we can´t solve these problems with the current mindset. We don´t even know if our collective framing of that horizon and the events that we are anticipating, is the best one. Nora Bateson is an award-winning filmmaker, writer and educator, as well as President of the International Bateson Institute, based in Sweden. Her work asks the question “How we can improve our perception of the complexity we live within, so we may improve our interaction with the world?” She just publishes her wonderful new book 'Combining', which is an embodiment of her recent work on Warm Data and offers a radical ecological approach to many of the key issues of our time: climate change, political upheaval, education, health, food and relationships. Susanne Cook-Greuter is internationally known as the leading expert in mature ego development and self-actualization. Daniel Görtz and Michael Garfield in dialogue, hosted by Tom Amarque
"Evil is the annunciation of the next level of order"
Paleontologist-Futurist Michael Garfield is devoted to helping navigate our age of accelerating weirdness and helping cultivate the curiosity and play we'll need to thrive in it. As host and producer of both Future Fossils Podcast & The Santa Fe Institute's Complexity Podcast, Michael acts as interlocutor for a worldwide community of artists, scientists, and philosophers — a practice that feeds his synthetic and transdisciplinary "mind-jazz" performances in the form of essay, music, and fine art. Standard-bearer for a new generation of boundary-defying scholars, Michael refuses to be enslaved by a single perspective, creative medium, or intellectual community, walking through the walls between academia and festival culture, theory and practice — speaking and performing everywhere from Moogfest to Burning Man, SXSW to Boom Festival, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia to Long Now's Ignite Talks to The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors.
Daniel Görtz is the co-author, with Emil Esper Friis, of both “Hanzi Freinacht” books The Listening Society and Nordic Ideology. Daniel’s work approaches what many know as Ken Wilber’s integral theory, but considers its secular and practical application to politics, cultural currents in society, within the arts and beyond. He lives in Sweden and works for Metamoderna, the publisher of metamodern books, and for Glimworks, an IT-company where he is In-House Philosopher.

We also discuss the dangers of the polarising debate on transgenderism on both sides of the culture war. Some surprising and necessary insights.
Rachel Hayden met with her own gender crisis several years ago. Finding the dogma of "trans ideology" insufficient and problematic, she turned to scientists and thinkers on the liminal web for guidance, eventually developing an aspirational model of gender transition for herself. She has become increasingly fascinated by gender over time and has spoken publicly with many others on the subject, including John Vervaeke, Gregg Henriques, and Alexander Bard. Her interest has recently turned toward healthy models of gender for non-trans people, and she is following the work of such thinkers as Bard, Fanny Norlin, and co-presenter Adriana Forte-Naili to enrich her understanding in this regard.
Aydan Connor is a Transman who currently works as a craft beer brewer. He has been slowly entering the conversations in the liminal web space after finding John Vervaeke’s Meaning Crisis work through his interview on Jordan Peterson’s podcast. In contrast to the superficial biological essentialist trans debate happening in the anti-woke circles surrounding Jordan Peterson, Aydan quickly discovered John Vervaeke’s interview with Rachel Hayden, which demonstrated a rich and nuanced interest in the psychology and cognitive science of sex and gender, and most importantly, acknowledged the brain as part of our biology. Aydan has been in regular conversation with Rachel, and now also with Adriana, and is increasingly urgent and invested in finding a way to deepen our conversations about gender and sex, hoping to reverse the current trend of scapegoating trans people.
Adriana Forte Naili is a coach and facilitator, but she currently spends a lot of her time speaking about the cyclical nature of the female body. Experiencing the double bind of appreciating her cyclical nature and feeling stifled by Modernity’s pressures and expectations, she dove deeply into the question; “how do I show up as a cyclical being in a world that imagines itself linear?” This inquiry has led her into many rabbit holes, including deep explorations of our social constructs and the ways they shape our bodies, our psyches, our relationships and the systems that we create. She has become increasingly active in the “Liminal Web” having conversations with a meta thinkers, futurists and philosophers in an attempt to awaken us from our “linear” daze. She sees both Rachel Hayden and Aydan Connor as friends and colleagues in this journey of bringing nuance to the “gender” conversation.
